  • Operation Savannah was the South African Defense Force's 1975-1976 covert intervention in the Angolan War of Independence, and the subsequent Angolan Civil War.
    Gerrie Hugo is a Operation Savannah veteran. During this operation his only identification was that of number 181. This video expresses the views of a large group veterans that were involved in the same operation.

    Salute i was also there that is the truth we never were informed about anything and did not know what or who was oposite us and that was why i did not join the permanent force !!!!!My platoon guarded the bridge over the Cunene and got nearly involved in fighting with our own forces nearing the bridge with guns blazing during the night !!!!

    Until 23:59:59 of November 10, 1975, Angola was considered to be a territory of Portugal. Portugal had normal diplomatic relations with both Zaire and South Africa. Under international law the regular armies of these two nations were openly violating the territory of Portugal therefore they entered under these rather shallow disguises.

    The apartheid government in those days did not have a chance to achieve victory against Cubans Army and equipment and Fapla . The reason for the defeat of the South African army was caused by American troubles in Vietnam .
