Ok, so I finally have to ask, what are those really really long sticky up things on some of the boats. (always boats with fishing rods on display) They look a bit like radio ham aerials. Are they some sort of fishing extension or something? I see that they are re-positionable at the base, but don't see any line guides or tip .

Called outriggers for trolling. You can run 2-3 lines per outrigger.
