I do remember this from 1975. There was one part where your little ride thing took you into a room and you were screaming down the runway then takeoff. It was that image and memory that led me to be a pilot 20 years later. And yes when I first soloed I heard the "if you had wings" tune in my head as I went down the runway......
As old as I am at 42, I can't believe I remember every detail of this ride from age 8. It looks like I'm not alone.. Ahh, the age of innocence, before life got crappy and REAL. Thanks for the nostalgia! I sure wish I could take my kids on it when we go in February :(.
Yeah! The white hot optimism that oozed out of Disney World was just magical. Then life got crappy and Real and the true meaning of "dread" hit. Can I please go back to 1977 and going to Star Wars the day before we left to go to Disney World. Probably my best year ever! 2016 was the worst.
Back when Disney was on the ticket system, "If You Had Wings" and "Carousel of Progress" were the two free, no ticket required attractions in Tomorrowland. Everybody loved them 'cause the air conditioning was great and you could rest your feet. Then you'd burn an "E" ticket on Space Mountain - or maybe an "A" or "B" ticket on "Mission to Mars", which was a snooze for most kids since the only thing that really happened was that your seat moved an inch. Terrific tribute! Thanks for making and posting!
This bought back some wonderful memories. I worked at the Magic Kingdom from 1978/1979. l liked Wings more than Dreamflight but they were both good. "If You Had Wings" is one of those songs you get stuck in your head.
Sorry for the late comment, but... I can't put into words my deep appreciation for you preserving these iconic (albeit little known) songs. Heartfelt props!!!
I still get the song stuck in my head from 1973. Strange, but true. I remember the wind blowing on our faces. It made it seem as if we were flying. Now, here we are, 50 years later. Like someone snapped their fingers.
How many memories come to my mind looking at the "If You Had Wings" part. I was 11 when first visited it in 1978. I have never forgotten the song... And the memories of being there with my family... Thank you.
Thank you for taking the time and adding this for those who will have never been able to experience it as well as for those who did, and can remember back to the wonderful ride it was.
If Disney was smart, they would "re-imagine" this and play on the current craze for all things "retro" a'la Mad Men and Pan Am. It could be appealing to young hipsters, and us oldies could get our nostalgic childhood fix.
Sad to see If You Had Wings close. That was the one thing I always looked forward to when we would visit WDW...then a bunch of incompetent managers and a greedy machinists union destroyed Eastern and the end was inevitable. Thanks for posting this. Brought back some very fond memories. I never go to WDW anymore so this was a trip back in time.
This really took me back to my childhood. IF YOU HAD WINGS was one of my favourite rides at Disney World back in the day. I never liked the 'flight' remakes that followed much, though the current Buzz Lightyear ride is fun and interactive. This video does an excellent job of showing the changes over time. Very well done.
❤ THIS ride IF YOU HAD WINGS 🛫🛩️🛬✈️made the big travel impression on me when I was a child SOOO glad I’m still traveling after all these years 🎉heading to Italy soon !! I do have wings in 2023 on🦜wards ➡️🛫🏔️🏝️🏖️⛰️🗿❤️🕉️☯️🦜🍀🌴🪸🪷☮️💜🌐🌐🌐🌐🌐↗️➡️↕️⬆️⬇️✈️🌞🌏🌎🌍LETS ALL DO IT 😊When we can ❤
Thank you for posting this - I visited once in 1979 and somehow I remember the whole thing like it was yesterday. You brought back some great memories for me
I can still remember those people going up that waterfall and wondered where in the world that was. Dunn's River Falls in Ochos Rios Jamaica that I got to do in 1998. Gosh things used to be great!
Delta Dreamflight featured some of my favorite diorama-type scenes at WDW: Japan, Paris... I love the use of forced perspective and lighting to make small spaces seem larger.
Thanks Martin! Most people don't seem to remember these wonderful rides. Don't get me wrong-I love Buzz, and never had the chance to ride IYHW, but I did ride Dreamflight and have watched IYHW several times. How I would love to ride either one of those rides in 2017!
Took me back to my first visit to Disney World with my then still married parents. I was 7 and we stayed at the Contemporary Resort. Unfortunately still the best time of my life.
I rode the first version when my fam took me to Disney World when I was very little... early 80s! And how do I still remember that?... That Song stuck in my head and the airplanes projected in the dark (I think I remember little planes also being on the conveyor belt at the end).
This was EPCOT before EPCOT was a thing. I was fortunate to have ridden each major iteration of this ride (If You Had Wings and Dreamflight). Sad that it's long gone now.
Remember IYHW from my childhood. Easily a fave and loved the theme song. When it was rebranded it might as well have closed. You can’t replace these classics which had catchy theme songs. Wings, horizons, journey into imagination... get the picture? One suggestion: can you slow down the captions some? That’s the only pointer you’ll ever hear from me. These are so cool to watch. Thanks again!
I think the last time I rode this ride would have been 1991. I wish it was still around though. I love Buzz Lightyear, but this was a ride of my childhood...and when Disney does away with Buzz Lightyear for a "newer, better ride", the kids of today will be "But that was a ride of my childhood. They should reimagine it..."
I was never a fan of Dreamflight, honestly; when they lost the "If you had wings" song, it was over for me. (Strong nostalgia tied to that one.) Nothing against Dreamflight or fans of it.
Outstanding video--thanks so much for posting! Went through "If You Had Wings" dozens of times--it was my favorite ride. Your film of that had to be 8mm, right? Which means you had to go through twice, as one roll of film wouldn't have been long enough.
Yeah Snow White took over this area sometime after 1998. i remember going in the summer of 98 and the whole section was closed off and work on the new Snow White and the 7 dwarves ride was taking place if Im not mistaking.
I was twelve when I first rode If You Had Wings...can't help but wonder how I'd feel about it were it still open today. I was never crazy about Dreamflight,I found it too disjointed, too many different styles in one attraction...although I loved the forced-perspective diorama of Paris.

awesome! thanks- we went from 1974-1982. went back for the first time again last year! why did they get rid of this and mr toads wild ride yet keep (barf) its a small world???
Disney has had many "licensed" engineers over the years, but Bob Gurr was one of the only "real" engineer they ever employed. The man who designed the monorail, and the "Omnimover" system used on this very ride, was fired for not being a "licensed" engineer mid EPCOT build. I'll take a guy with actual hands on experience over a 5 year "collage" graduate with no actual experience, ANY day!
I don't remember If You Have Wings much, as I'm only 30 today. I remember Dreamflight barely. The best part was the how nice and cool it felt when you went inside. That's seriously all I remember! Oh and it was boring.
Only rode If You Had Wings once in my youth, sadly. The Delta ride and its future cousins couldn't compare, in my opinion. One question though - the background score during the ride and the actual "If You Had Wings" song sound different. For instance, the musical interlude on the ride had trumpets and the actual song had percussion, electric guitar and a loud piano. The disco guitar solo at the end was also missing during the "speed room." I wonder why.
If Tomorrowland was revamped to remove IPs and bring back classic attractions like Alien Encounter and The Timekeeper, IYHW should return. I have an idea on who should narrate: Scott Finnell (who you might know from some of my other comments), as he voiced Birdman from Space Ghost Coast to Coast (who has wings!) and his voice is suitable for narration.
if i remember correctly you had 2 voices doing the "Ladies and gentlemen your dreamflight will depart immediately for the future. please prepare for supersonic takeoff". the guys voice then a womans voice. it alternated. i have it on camcorder tape from 1990
I do remember this from 1975. There was one part where your little ride thing took you into a room and you were screaming down the runway then takeoff.
It was that image and memory that led me to be a pilot 20 years later. And yes when I first soloed I heard the "if you had wings" tune in my head as I went down the runway......
Great story! Thanks for sharing! :-)
That left an imprint on me as well because in my 6 year old mind we were taking off and I was freaked out! Lol...
As old as I am at 42, I can't believe I remember every detail of this ride from age 8. It looks like I'm not alone.. Ahh, the age of innocence, before life got crappy and REAL. Thanks for the nostalgia! I sure wish I could take my kids on it when we go in February :(.

Agree with that. White hot optimism indeed
I'm 48 and remember all of it.
Thats why I'm here.

No. I remember my little brother Jeff, who was probably about 4 at the time, asking, "How are we going to get back home?" on "Mission to Mars".
Mission to Mars did a good job of shaking up your bladder though, lol.
This bought back some wonderful memories. I worked at the Magic Kingdom from 1978/1979. l liked Wings more than Dreamflight but they were both good. "If You Had Wings" is one of those songs you get stuck in your head.

Thank you for all this old stuff! Keeps memories alive!
Both of my grandfathers worked for Eastern so this was our go to ride. What a flood of child hood memories
Did they tell the cast members?
I still get the song stuck in my head from 1973. Strange, but true. I remember the wind blowing on our faces. It made it seem as if we were flying. Now, here we are, 50 years later. Like someone snapped their fingers.
Thanks for posting this. It's the only decent video of: If You Had Wings. It was my favorite ride as a kid.
Dreamflight and Horizons were the best Disney rides that aren't there anymore. I wish they would bring them back.
nothing cooled you off like a couple of rides through If You Had Wings..Ahhhhh....
Disney does have that air conditioning effect on people 😊
I for one enjoy that:)
I looooved Dreamflight! This video took me right back! Thank you!
I remember this from the mid 90's, thanks for posting
How many memories come to my mind looking at the "If You Had Wings" part. I was 11 when first visited it in 1978. I have never forgotten the song... And the memories of being there with my family... Thank you.
Watching hhis was so amazing. It's probably my all time favorite ride and the one I remember the most from my childhood. Thanks for this!
The song just did it for me!!! Brings me back to the good times!!! If you had wings would play in my head all day after i rode the ride!!
Thank you for taking the time and adding this for those who will have never been able to experience it as well as for those who did, and can remember back to the wonderful ride it was.
Rode this so many times as a kid. Thanks for posting and allowing me to relive the memory!
If Disney was smart, they would "re-imagine" this and play on the current craze for all things "retro" a'la Mad Men and Pan Am. It could be appealing to young hipsters, and us oldies could get our nostalgic childhood fix.

Back then it cost $5 to get into Disney with a "ticket book" for rides. This ride didn't need a ticket and was my favorite ride in the place.
This really took me back to my childhood. IF YOU HAD WINGS was one of my favourite rides at Disney World back in the day. Thank you for posting this - I visited once in 1979 and somehow I remember the whole thing like it was yesterday. You brought back some great memories for me
One of my favs. It was cool inside, no lines, free ride, great music, really trippy. Thanks for uploading.
Only reason it was free is because you were riding through a commercial, but that's ok...I was there in 75 and it was magical.
Thank You, very much. It brought back early childhood memories. Thanks again.
I can still remember those people going up that waterfall and wondered where in the world that was. Dunn's River Falls in Ochos Rios Jamaica that I got to do in 1998. Gosh things used to be great!
This was my favorite ride. :)
Thanks for this video and the great research you put into it. Disney history is just endless, so much to learn!
awesome job so glad that i can still watch this as it was a big part of my childhood. thanx so much
I have to agree...the song "If You Had Wings" has stayed with me since I last rode it in 1984! Great documentary!
I've had it stuck in my head since 1976, lol.
lol
Thanks. it was great to see "if you had wings" again.
I remember this. This was my brother's favorite ride at Walt Disney World and we used to ride it over and over.
Delta Dreamflight featured some of my favorite diorama-type scenes at WDW: Japan, Paris... I love the use of forced perspective and lighting to make small spaces seem larger.
Great video, all versions of this ride I loved!
Thanks Martin! Most people don't seem to remember these wonderful rides. Don't get me wrong-I love Buzz, and never had the chance to ride IYHW, but I did ride Dreamflight and have watched IYHW several times. How I would love to ride either one of those rides in 2017!

Ultimate tribute. Disney Magic. This is it. If You Had Wings had that magic.
Ahh the Memories! I used to Love the "Delta Dreamflight" version. Nicely Done! Cheers ; )
If you had Wings was my very first WDW ride in 1977. I remember it well !
I love your videos, Martin. You have a talent, thanks so much!
a wonderful ride, loved it
my favorite ride of all times...you should be knighted for posting this.
This sure brings back memories. Best of all, it was FREE! ;-) ...
I enjoyed each version.. I was lucky enough to ride If You Had Wings, Delta Dreamflight and Take Flight :)
I rode the first version when my fam took me to Disney World when I was very little... early 80s! And how do I still remember that?... That Song stuck in my head and the airplanes projected in the dark (I think I remember little planes also being on the conveyor belt at the end).
The video of Dreamflight takes me back. A nice relaxing ride overall. And with very strong air conditioning if I remember right.
One of Disney's more whimsical rides, for sure.
One of my all time favorite attractions at WDW!
This was EPCOT before EPCOT was a thing. I was fortunate to have ridden each major iteration of this ride (If You Had Wings and Dreamflight). Sad that it's long gone now.
I miss these rides
miss this ride and Eastern Airlines!!!
Thank you, this is wonderful. :)
I must've rode Dreamflight but I don't remember it. If You Had Wings left too great an impression.
Remember IYHW from my childhood. Easily a fave and loved the theme song. When it was rebranded it might as well have closed. You can’t replace these classics which had catchy theme songs. Beautiful...O town!!!!!
Barely remeber this one, but I do know I was on it with that song, somewhere in the early '80's.
Remember this from 1976 - Orlando.
wow, yes of course i remember!
Disney needs to build more dark rides like this in DisneyWorld
I think the last time I rode this ride would have been 1991. I wish it was still around though. I love Buzz Lightyear, but this was a ride of my childhood...and when Disney does away with Buzz Lightyear for a "newer, better ride", the kids of today will be "But that was a ride of my childhood. Ah, the 70's... when the Middle Class could actually afford to go to Disney World
@Dennis Mitchell For a SINGLE day, silly gooses. XD
Yeah Snow White took over this area sometime after 1998. i remember going in the summer of 98 and the whole section was closed off and work on the new Snow White and the 7 dwarves ride was taking place if Im not mistaking.
I saw Dreamflight, but no one in my family thought much of it.

Now is Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin
the audio animatronics shop maintained the show projectors and audio...I know, I was there ...were you?
I remember riding "If you had wings" sadly, I never rode dreamflight.

idk if im the first to ask this, but where exactly did you get the delta dreamflight music tracks from?
HOW TF DID I NEVER SEE THIS?!?!?!?!
It seems like they are testing that idea out with bringing back 'Captain EO' at EPCOT...I hope they do more like that.
if i remember correctly you had 2 voices doing the "Ladies and gentlemen your dreamflight will depart immediately for the future. please prepare for supersonic takeoff". the guys voice then a womans voice. it alternated. i have it on camcorder tape from 1990
Yep, you are correct!
that's becuz that is the same tunnel from If you had wings and it's the only original Disney speed tunnel left in a Disney park.
I rode the original ride. I remember it being nice and air conditioned, and since you didnt need a ticket to ride it (WDW used tickets then)..
I like the theme
of dreamflight
yes it was
did I see the loch ness monster at 6:36
Sorry to blow up the comments...but this stuff got me... probably why I'm stuck in Australia now...dang
Were Dreamflight and Take Flight the exact same ride?
Yep! Same ride, just without the Delta Sponsorship.
Unlike the other videos, in this one your subtitles change way too fast. I had to pause to read them.
As a kid, i always felt like i dropped LSD when i went on this ride
ps this was one of the rides you went on only if the other lines were too long!!
In loving memory of President Ronald Reagan
Is this film? It had to be.
big fish little fish
Or a beta cam or video set up. They were bulky and heavy
This was transformed into Buzz Lightyear correct?
Rjmellow_ You are correct!
Before Buzz Lightyear.
I thought the rainforest was in South America not 'Puerto Rico' wtf
Delta Airlines still exists, so what happened? They are making a lot of money now!
However, they were also sponsoring the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, which put a severe strain on their cash reserves.
