Man this deserve more views. I enjoy creating short videos on my instagram. But setting up that camera, jumping out of frame, forgetting too turn on the dang camera, etc.. It's ALOT of work and we sure appreciate it Paul! Your work is beautiful and the videos are just absolute butter, keep it up buddy!
I watched the 4 part series of videos and rebuilt my 4 speed top loader ….. thanks for your videos, I followed them to a successful rebuild and I spent less than $500
Great videos. I have a 1970 Mustang with a 4 speed top loader with wide ratio gears. I might have missed it ,but did you mention that some top loaders like mine don't have a drain plug. The bottom bolt on the tail housing is the drain plug.
There are many types of rail combinations, so if you are working on 1 transmission you are going to have two interlocks and three detents. Some are actually the same length some are different. But simple math will simply show you that if you only have two interlocks and three detents then it shouldn't be hard to figure out which is which.
Paul, thanks for posting this. It helps me with my T86/R10 as a lot of what you showed applies. Other than that large puller in the T86 disassembly video for the input bearing, you showed you don't need special tools. Appreciate you taking the time to teach us.
Does your book cover the NP 440 used in 1981 - 1987 GMC, Chevrolet fullsize pickups (RPO code MY6). It's a overdrive and I have one in my 78 nova, thanks.
I've watched all 4 videos - multiple times - thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! In another response you mention coming up with a "rebuild kit" - would love to see that soon, as I used your earlier videos to tear mine down. Two more things and I'll be quiet - in your book you mention a steel speedo gear - where do we get those? And, what is your preferred gear lube in these?
Paul, I just realized that you had a youtube channel! I bought your book several years ago and remember watching your collaboration with ericthecarguy. Looking forward to looking through your library and to future videos, thanks for helping us all out!!
Thank you Paul! You’re videos are always excellent. Your book was invaluable with helping me rebuild two toploaders this past year. Though I have to admit, I wish you’d put out these videos a year ago 😂 The videos fill in a few blanks and compliment your book well. One question. I was surprised that you didn’t add a vent to the tail shaft housing, as per your book. Was that due to the owners preference? Or have you changed your mind on doing that?
One detail always do is double check that your detents are in correctly by shifting into a gear then check if the other shift lever is locked out into neutral position. Then vice-versa. If the opposite shift lever still moves its possible engage 3rd and 1st gear at same time. Locking out the whole transmission...only way to get the car moving is getting underneath with wrench (hammer sometimes) and put minimum one rail in neutral position. Easy just to double check when it's on the bench... just wished I had utube when I was a kid. Great job on explaining assembly
As mentioned in the beginning of the series is I double check the action before assembly... Very important. Maybe you didnt watch parts 1, 2 and 3 yet?
@@GearBoxVideo missed pt 3. But as I said great videos on toploader. Wished I had them when I was 17 and replaced 2nd gear...yes I didn't check shift levers and why I know that the trans will lockup. Going back and watch all again...theyre that good
great video series. helped me rebuild my 4 speed for my cobra. my only issue is everything spun freely until i put the shaft in for the cluster gear. everything spins but not freely. the shaft went right in no problem for it. now i dont know where to start to find out what is binding.
Great video. Thanks for making this series. I have a 66 mustang A-code. Not sure if my 4 sod manual is original or not. Mechanic is telling me he thinks it’s a T4 but my shift pattern is more like a top loader. After watching this, wondering if I could rebuild it myself.
Thank you Paul very much for the great instructional series! Love to watch your work! Comparing to the muncies, which one of them would the strenght of the toploader equal to?
Toploaders share the same center to center and designed better that a muncie. Pros and cons. Muncie is lighter weight, shifts better. Toploader has wear issues with clutch teeth and cointershafts and will not shuft above 6500rpm
You make it look so easy Paul. I look for new videos from you everyday. By the way, what were the brand of snap ring pliers you were using when you put the snap ring on the speedo gear? Those looked pretty nice.
Any fluid recommendations on one of these? I installed synchromesh some years ago when I rebuilt mine but haven't installed the transmission yet to try it out.
Great video series. Thanks. Question: the input shaft on my toploader has some lateral play in it. The input shaft in your vid looks rigid. Is this a problem for me? Thanks again.
Hey! I love your videos! I’m having some shifter or trans issues in my toploader. I would love to talk to you more about what I have going on. I was wondering if you could do a video of rebuilding a toploader 3 speed on the floor?
hello, love ur vids and a subscriber. Ive got an issue w my t176. i took topend fork assembly off and found no interlock pin i put new pin in reassembled it and mated topend to main tran. but something is still bound, im stumped. thoughts? Thank you.
also check it before and after. Use a phone to take pics. I have no clue as to what you did wrong, but if you remove what you did, does it work OK? Maybe the wrong size interlock
Brilliant series. Thanks so much. i'll be ordering the book or dropping in some coffee money now $ 5 coffee money..that was easy to do. THANKYOU See u again soon -dave (Australia)
Hi Paul. Do the early square 4 bolt top loader cases have the same tail shaft housing bolt pattern as the later 8 bolt cases with the ears ? In other words can tail housings be swapped from the early to late cases ?
How hot does the output shaft bearing need to be to slip onto the mainshaft like that? My inputs shaft bearing race was heated to 180-200 degrees and went on just fine. Output bearing has been a bit more "stubborn".
The 4 bolts on my bearing retainer dont have any washers. Instead the bolt has a raised ring around it, the retainer cover has an indented ring around it. Should I be leaving it the way it is? Doesnt look right to install a spring washer because of this configuration. thanks.
As always it's a very professional job that you do Paul, and one question, your book manual transmission rebuild and modifying, is it shipped to Croatia
Paul why can't find a AutoGear main case for a Muncie anywhere? Supply issues or are they not making them any more? need a 7/8 cs case if you can get me one...thanks...should I call you?? Also I need another one of your printo seal gasket sets too!
How tight should the input shaft to the output shaft be when fully assembled? Years ago when I rebuilt my top loader. It was hard to turn after assembled. I used a thicker gasket to loosen it up a bit. Was that a mistake?
@@GearBoxVideo thanks for the info. My tranny has had an ear broken off and welded back on sometime in the last 60 years or so. I think that the front of the case might of be resurfaced. I took the thing apart and reassembled it several times. It was still tight. It works fine, but when car is going 70 or so and I let off gas I hear vibration. It could be my driveshaft or rear end. Do you think it could be the transmission to loose?
I have an old mid 60's toploader that I've sitting around for 20 some year...any idea what it maybe worth? Also what's a ball park price for something like what you did here? Thanks for the great videos.
It's not whether I plan to or not. It's whether or not a transmission comes into the shop and the person has time for me to create a video. I do not have an sm465 in stock. So yes it would be great to do a video maybe you want to ship me one?

Hello Paul like always great content, enjoy all your videos, I have a Question have you been inside the M23 box yet if so what’s your take on it , I’d like hear from someone who has rebuilt 100s of Muncie 4 speeds
Hi Paul thanks for these videos and taking the time to reply to my last question. I am rebuilding a couple of Mustang gearboxes for my son who is building a race car here in the UK. One of the gearboxes is original from a ‘64 mustang while the other has suffered a catastrophic blow up leaving the 3/4 slider, 3rd gear and second gear all welded to the main shaft which I am guessing may have been caused by insufficient end flat on the gear. My question is regarding 3rd gear. The original box which is all ok has a3rd gear which has no holes drilled in it to let oil through whereas the one in the blown up box has some as does the gear you have fitted in you video. Can you tell me if this is a modification you have done or are later 3rd gears manufactured this way. I have access to a milling machine and could make the holes I think using a solid carbide cutter. Thanks again for taking the trouble to produce these videos I have fond them most helpful
The most important thing to due is add slots on the thrust surface, off-center. Then add a small valley in the mainshaft journal to allow oil to pool and circulate. The spirol grooves act more like wipers. Also use an oil like Royal Purple Max gear lube. This seems to have worked best for me . Where in the UK are you?
Paul, great vid series. I have a 4sp Toploader from a 70 mustang. I’m dropping the tranny soon, so fully expecting to replace all components. Is that 12,000th play you created in what i was thinking was the 3rd gear assembly and taking the “hub” down by 10,000th going to need to be done on all rebuilds? Or is it all a matter of where you get your Taiwanese parts from ? Or was that a shaft issue? Sounded like from what you said it has been a long standing problem for that gear getting enough oil. Again, wondering if that is having to be done in most cases. Thanks!!
Paul, I realize this is a may be an elementary school question, but in watching your videos I see where everything you did was by hand. When these transmissions were first manufactured, were they assembled entirely by hand as well or were there any assembly type machines used in the manufacturing process?
Great series on the older 4speed top loader! I wonder if there's a way for a cutaway diagram to see what's happening with the detents, drop-in balls or cylinders, and springs. Thank you for the content and knowledge base!

I appreciate the straightforward, no-nonsense video. One question regarding the detents; How does a person determine the correct lengths? Thank you.
