Travelling in Kolkata Trams of yore: Bengali crowd rides with discipline in this archival footage

The experience of a journey in a Kolkata tram is something else. See the driver's perspective in this 1980's - 1990's view from inside a tram doing the rounds of Calcutta city. See the ramshackle neighbourhood the tram is traversing, with the old diesel buses plying on the roads, in this video from the olden days. Hand drawn carts, cyclists and pedestrians rode alongside or even in front of the oncoming tram, going at roughly the same speed. A ticket conductor goes through the tram, collecting fares.

হ্যাঁ, খুবই সুন্দর ছিল। ইউনিয়ন বাজি, স্ট্রাইক, লকআউট, মারামারি, গুন্ডামি করে কলকাতা এবং তার পার্শ্ববর্তী শিল্পাঞ্চল গুলির বড় বড় শিল্পকে দম বন্ধ করে মেরে ফেলা হয়েছিল। বিকেল হলেই ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা লোডশেডিং, মশার উপদ্রব এবং শহরের বাইরের দিকে সাপের উপদ্রব। ওই সময় উন্নয়ন হলে নীল সাদা রং কোনদিন বাংলায় আসতো না। ওই সময় উন্নয়ন হলে আমাদের মতন ছেলেরা বাংলা ছেড়ে বাইরে চলে যেত না।
