So, I planned an essay about food

  • Hey everyone! This is another of the newish series of essay planning videos, 'Read & Respond' in which I break down my thought and planning process in real time to a random prompt and theme. Given the variety of GAMSAT essay topics, this one really proves the extent to which you just have to be willing to have an idea or an opinion on just about anything when it comes to writing for Section 2. These are my reflections on food.
    Leave me a comment with your thoughts and how you would have approached this prompt

    I came to learn about writing personal essays for Gamsat but instead left with so much nostoligia. I had no idea you went through such a similar childhood to me.
    Im still quite young right now and my family hasn't really broken out poverty yet. Im gonna try my best to help my family out any way I can. Ive got siblings i need to take care of as well, I want to set such a good example for them. It's annoying because my mum's getting older now and I hate to see her still working just for us. I want to one day be able to retire my parents so they can relax for once. But I'll get there one day.
    It's weird to open up about this stuff, because I dont feel comfortable doing so (good thing this is annonymous account and noone knows it me😂). My plan is to first get into medicine, and at same time making money on the side, I was thinking of becoming a tutor like you.
    Anyway thank you so much for the free resources this channel has helped me in so many ways. I really appreicate it Jesse!!

    Great video Jesse :) It's really helpful to watch your thinking process.Your essay plan has a wonderful and thoughtful contention! I probably would have written about an increasing importance and need for people in the current world to grow food themselves and the issues as well as implications with that (for example in Sri Lanka where people are given more time off to grow their own food because of the crisis). Might also have written about why I grow some food myself which is to teach the kids where food comes from and that it doesn't just appear in the supermarket. Maybe then explore how our current way of living means we have lost touch of how food is grow and the time and effort and cost that go into that. This is just a ramble! But I'll definitely write an essay on it.

      Sounds like a great range of ideas! Especially because you've applied it on a global level right down to your own backyard too

    hopefully not too late on this trend. I loved how you approached this. Definitely jigged my memory to think about how food has the power to unlock some of the best memories. It made think back to the market place in Kampala where I grew up. The sounds of tracks unloading fresh produce, the food stalls lit up by candle light, me pestering my grandmother for coins to buy some maize, flirting with the young men to get a free kilo of ground-nut paste.......

    Thank you for another video Jesse! I feel like I have adopted a very similar writing style to you. I used to write with a very strict creative structure (as I really enjoyed creative writing) but found it very time costly. Now I stick to a more free flowing structure where I just ramble on about my thoughts (with a plausible reasoning I think) and just tie up everything to the initial idea at the end.
    My idea for this quote was to write about the significance of food drawing positive memories from the past and at times helping to alleviate stress in the modern world where competition and egocentric hyenas roam. My example would have been of a young soldier returning home after the completion of his military service in South Korea. And the effects of the first bite of his mother's cooking bringing a sense of comfort, warmth and relief after years of dodgy military rations; regardless of the quality. Then, I would fast track in time and elaborate on how the positive perceptions weren't to do with mum's cooking but rather the sentimental memories of different places the individual has located as home at heart. And then use the example of how elderly always speak about their times in the army where they were fed poor quality foods but even those still remaining positive memories. Thereby, the emotional connection food can have to a location place at our hearts as 'homes' is a positive one we will cherish until the dust piles on our graves.
    Honestly, I don't even know if it all makes sense hahah.
    Just a quick question as well - is there a method to evaluate/analyse your writing after you've written them? I've been writing a few but unsure of the quality...

      Fantastic that you've been able to find your own writing style that you're comfortable with, and a really interesting idea. The creative hybrid structure is really unique.
      I actually made a video a little while ago on how to self-reflect on your essays!
      th-cam.com/video/loYcaXUzq78/w-d-xo.html
      Otherwise, you can also peer review essays and have yours reviewed on the GAMSAT discord
      discord.com/invite/xGW2nWvXvR
      You could also give the ACER automated marking system a go to get a ball park figure but it seems like there is a lot of variance between its score and the final score that people achieve now.

    possibly a thought process of homegrown/well known aspect to building up experience of expanding my knowledge through growing new foods and in turn exposing myself to new learning/tastes/experiences. Just an idea of different approach. Love the thoughts of familiarity vs the the desire to expand my views.
    The well known comfort becomes a limitation to the pursuit of new knowledge.
    Bit abstract I know 🤣

    • @jesseosbourne
      @jesseosbourne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really interesting interpretation. The comfort vs expanding views idea could become very existential haha

    Hey Jesse. As usual, love your videos. Would be super interested to see you write out a essay to these questions you do in your series. Also, how long do you think is needed to study for S2 to get a good mark? 1.5 months?

    • @jesseosbourne
      @jesseosbourne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear it, Jai! I'll see if I can put together an essay for the next one (time is the biggest limiting factor at the moment)
      In terms of S2 study timelines, it's really not possible for me to give an accurate answer here. It depends on what a good score is for your circumstances and your development as a writer.
      That being said, any time to practice, is good time and there's plenty that can be done in 1.5 months. Practice writing essays under timed conditions and set a base quota of 2 essays a week (65 mins). Good luck!

    Hi Jessie, I saw you mentioned different colored ACER booklets in your gamsat study tracker. are you referring to practice paper? thanks you.

    • @jesseosbourne
      @jesseosbourne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, that might've been my older one that I built last year before they updated the covers and took away the colours! haha
      Orange = practice questions
      Blue = Sample questions
      Green = Test 1
      Purple = Test 2
      Pink. = Test 3
      The content is still all the same

    Hello,
    I'm currently working on essay writing and figuring out my style and structure for Section 2. I'm a little confused about responding to the quotes.
    I was under the impression that if a candidate was to respond to the general topic as opposed to a 'main idea' found within a quote (or more than one quote) they would be penalized in some way? You've suggested that the quotes can be used as inspiration and you obviously have the scores to back this up. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on this line of thinking regarding essay writing? I agree that is important for each person to find their own writing style as you said, it just seems tricky because its unclear which strategies will score highly or be penalized, all part of the fun I suppose!
    Thankyou! :)

    • @jesseosbourne
      @jesseosbourne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So there's really no hard and fast rules about this! I've seen people say they've had success in responding directly to prompts and others like me who have been successful in responding to the general theme. I go for the thematic response just because I feel that direct response to the prompts is narrowing my scope and potentially limiting my ability to express my own views or demonstrate my ability for creative or abstract thought and discussion.
      Everyone has different strengths to their writing though so I might lean this way because of personal bias. I wouldn't think there's necessarily a trend in certain strategies leading to higher or lower scores. A lot of advice about GAMSAT is driven by one individual sitting the exam and generalising advice based on their own anecdotal experience because we don't have the data that ACER has on student performance. I'd say go with what is your most natural response to the prompts :)
