Simple rule of thumb, if you don't have shaving cream, use a soap that already works well on your face ( face wash or bar soap ) wash ur face, use the soap for lather and shave, u can also save on aftershaves by using a alum block that will easily last 6+ months, and use a moisturizer that works on your face.
One more advantage for conditioner that people doesn't tend to think is that the conditioner, by design, makes the hair more soft. I always shave after bath, and I let the conditioner applied for a couple minutes, before.
I have used bar soap as a last resort, but it was not terrible. I shave using a natural soap made by a local farmers market, along with a double edged safety razor. The soap I buy is intended to be used for shaving and it's all natural. Cool V neck T-Shirt by the way! It's rare seeing Raphael "dressed down" lol.
I Shave in the Shower twice a day with whatever is available. From Imperial Leather to shampoo. I've also used beard oil too. I have no issues with any of it. I always use a moisturiser, though.
You can use aloe gel. It has the advantage of being transparent, and is a moisturizer with a mild cooling effect that works well for people with sensitive skin. Aloe gel is also handy for moisturing your hands etc., and it comes in a small tube that's easy to bring with you. I actually prefer aloe gel to shaving foam or shaving gel (and use it with my safety razor, so that's a winning combo in my book).
I have been through the straight razor thing but now just use a DE razor. I simply jump out of the shower in the morning and use my razor whilst my skin and stubble is soft and wet. I have mostly given up on any form of soap but I do still have it if I’m feeling the need. The secret is to use really sharp quality blades like Feathers and keep the stubble to the minimum.
I would have never thought there were different soaps for shaving, specifically. Also love to learn all the different techniques people came up with over the eras! That's neat! As soon as I started needing to clean my face I tried foam for a while. Eventually I figured, if all foam does is make things slippery, then I can use soap with water and save money. And everything goes well untill today. Granted I use soap for ladies that "melt easily", and need a healthy ammount of foam to make the shaving comfortable, and I never get the "clean look". Gotta try these techniques now
I usually won't travel without my shaving soap but during the times I left it at home, I find facial wash/foam does a good enough job too. I'll just fit my shave in during my face wash but only shaving with the grain and across the grain. Optionally, just run down to the nearest store and grab yourself a travel-sized can of shaving foam.
I am visually impaired and a tight budget so I shave daily in the shower without a mirror and use conditioner. The results are not perfect but I regard them as passable.
For sensitive skin; Hot shower second cerave moisturizer, than Vani cream shaving cream. At least 2 passes with 2 lathers shaving cream. For razor burn or bumps use hydrocortisone. Finish with more moisturizer and after shave!
My hair grows back rather quickly both facial and head hair so thanks for the insight. No worries though as I'm getting a haircut soon. Also A t shirt definitely can look classy with a pair of dress pants as proven here as long as it's in an extremely casual setting obviously. I appreciate the info as usual.
I have used bar soap, shampoo and/or conditioner for sensitive skin when I have run out or an emergency, but they don’t give a close shave. If I have a lot of facial hair, then I will use a rechargeable shaver and then use a multi-blade razor after that. I think also the type of water [i.e. hard or soft] can also affect the shaving experience for a wet shave too.
When traveling through India I was surprised that the road side barbers in general vigorously leather water with a brush prior to the shave, and no lubricant. Their method is to allow the water to soften the hair follicles over time (generally a few minutes, though 30 seconds entails some pain).
I shave with Irish spring aloe bar soap in the shower all the time and don't have any problems doing so. The big thing is to make sure that you have plenty of moister on the face with the bar soap. Have a choice between some Stirling soap or bar soap ... it's the artisan soaps all the way. Have a great day
I've used bar soap instead of shaving cream for 50 years does a great job....and I have very sensitive skin. I do shave in the shower so maybe that makes the difference
This was very informative. I used shea butter and aloe vera gel as a fill-in when I traveled and forgot my shaving soap 😅. It worked, to my surprise but I won't make it a habit as that could possibly clog the drain, maybe.
I've tried using bar soap for shaving - it was a complete disaster for my sensitive skin. If in need, I'd recomend to visit nearby store to buy shaving foam, even the cheapest will work much better.
I only use bar soap. SAFEGUARD is antibacterial and lathers great. As far as blades, I use everything depending on time available... straight edge, double edge safety, and Dollar Shave Club "Executive" 4 blade disposable. No razor burn, and most importantly... no infection/pimples because of the antibacterial properties of SAFEGUARD.
I just bought some safeguard that i'm going to try shaving with. But unfortunately, I think it's going to be discontinued since the FDA effectively banned anti-bacterial soap in the US in 2016. My understanding is that Safeguard is selling the remaining inventory and then no longer making it. So if you like it you might want to stock up. I seem to have a gift in liking products that are about to be discontinued.
I have never seen you in a casual outfit on this channel 😊 Maybe in one of your videos, showcase your causal wardrobe like t-shirts, polo shirts, and causal wear. Which many can afford. Not all can afford premium quality designers, and not all of us like buying used vintage or 2nd handed clothing. Maybe do a video of the top 10 brands under $50 , the top 10 brands under $100. Of course, the items have to be brand-new. So many of us have maybe $50-100, and we want something decent, but since you're into line of work, it makes it easier to figure it out. I see other TH-camrs lean towards fast fashion. However, at GG, you go for quality over quantity. Then maybe showing us brands are worth the price range. I shaved with bar soap for 40 years without a problem. Works fine. The only reason I changed to Proraso is the scent. Never used shampoo or conditioner for shaving. Never thought of it.

Yes, with a propper shaving cream is another kind of experience (smooth and nice) but the results without that kind of dandy/fancy stuff are really good as well.
When shaving, I use both an electric shaver and a double edge razor. One or the other works better than the other for certain parts of the face. Because of this, I do end up using both an after shave and shaving cream.
Of course you can...My dad used left over bath soap in his shaving mug...he always used a brush... and an old safety razor ...He always got a close shave....I have started doing the same thing....No problems...I guess its all about how fancy you want to get.
I use quality bath soap with disposable Bic razors and never have had a problem. I also use an electric shaver. I prefer a blade when traveling because it's more compact than an electric shaver.
When I travel I take my shave kit with me in my carry-on bag. The only thing I leave at home is my DE razor, and I replace that with a good cartridge razor and several cartridges. This way I have all of my stuff and can freshen up in the airport restrooms if I am excessively delayed.
Sorry, but I beg to differ! I have been shaving my visage for 50+ years (I’m 70). I have a full beard today, neatly trimmed, but I used to shave it off when the weather got warmer. A beard insulates your face during Canadian winters! However, I have always used, for five decades, IVORY bar soap as my facial lubricant, lathered in my hands, with excellant results, and I have never, ever spent a dime on shaving sop or cream!
I think this is hilarious, I shave my face everyday and my head every other day with ivory. Maybe it's my skin type or my water but Ive never had issues with over during or cuts or knicks. To each his own.(This is also with a Merkur 34C and Dorco Platinum blades) One last thing to note is Ivory changed there formula recently, I stocked up on their Tallow based soaps their new soap is vegetable oil based which I believe is more drying and has a worse lather - Tallow based soaps are the GOAT for shaving
Yes, lather is King! I have been DE shaving for a few years and recently realized how much better a think shave foam yields a much better shave. I was falsely under the impression that a watery lather would provide a slicker shave; boy was I wrong. I love using shave cream and shave soaps! My goal is to achieve a great shave at a very affordable price. Bar soap is on my list of things to try! I purchased some Pears soap to try this!
The answer is yes if you’re brave enough. In boot camp I both shaved and washed my hair with regular bar soap. When push comes to shove all soaps become the same.
The trick to shaving with bar soap is to lather portions of the face with the hand rather than trying to make a nice fluffy creme... Do it section by section...as the lather collapses quicker.
With at least a three blade razor (e.g. Mach 3) or more (e.g. Fusion) and especially a new head I can use just water. For soap a "natural"/Castile type soap (e.g. Dr. Bronner's) works great, but if using generic bar soap is necessary I would lather it well with my hands first then apply it.
I once have done with bar soap.... My beard was 15 days old... So shaving with bar soap was horrible decision.... So now i always shave with shaving cream....
Many years ago, I used bar soap because I wasn't paying attention and ran out of what I was using. The result wasn't great. I left my face a little on the dry side and wasn't a smooth shave.
This would have been perfect for a collaboration with Mantic59. Pretty sure that bar soap can do bad things to razors. My experience was they clog up a lot faster, even with good DE blades. Cassette blade systems plus bar soap, it just don't work for me.
“Can you shave your face with bar soap or conditioner?” I’ve been bearded for a number of years now, but from what I recall, people typically shave with a sharp blade of some variety. 😂
Yes ok, these are two different soaps😂.... A shaving soap has to built a thick creamy wet lather.... a bar soap doesn't do this.... that's the only reason....... they are not made for

No offense but this is pretty lame. If you're going to shave with bar soap at least do it properly with a brush and bowl like anyone else really would. But I won't actually cook the Dunan Hines first i'll just eat the powder. Gee wonder which one I will like better! Basically, you just wanted the bar soap to fail in advanced so you put no effort into a proper test.
I personally use conditioner as shaving cream all the time
Join army and you will learn what can soap do...
That's the best to use if you have no shaving cream. It's a far better choice than bar soap.
Dove soap has been used for decades as a shaving soap. Works great for me. Lathers up well with my brush. Not all soaps are the same though.
A good point - different soaps will be better/worse than others
Raphael, *the founder of the Gentleman's Gazette,* really put his face on the line for science -- my God, what a legend
He's a joke
Yes you can, I do it all the time using: a shaving brush + "Dove Beauty Bar" soap as it has PH 6 which is neutral for your skin
That's what I use ha👍

Also own a Muhle r41 which is definitely more aggressive.

I use shaving cream, gel for beard shaving with aftershave.Underarms and body I use bath soap to shave while bathing followed by alum block only.
Bar Soap works a lot better when you shave while taking a shower as the steam helps the to keep the soap from drying.
I don't think I'll use my cutthroat razor in the shower! I can shave with my eyes shut, but still...
I've used Arko sometimes. Its soap and very very fatty.
Interested if you could use Dr Bronner's ie. a liquid Castile soap.
