I've lived in Vermont (Burlington area) for over 40 years. While I agree with most of what you said, you missed one very important point: Vermont is the second cloudiest state in the US (behind only Washington). Combine that with the very short daylight hours in the winter, and Vermont is one very gloomy place from November through March (even well into April). Have lived most of my life in VT or nearby. Yep all of this is true, but most Vermonters don’t see these things as “problems”. The high cost of housing is partly a function of the post-covid buying up when the rich folks from the southern big cities snatched up rural properties because the city folk were terrified that the pandemic could not be stopped. Housing prices shot thru the roof because the rich folks started bidding wars on the housing stock and inflated the prices so much that local folks, who have lived frugal lives in their family farms and houses saw huge rises in their property taxes based on assessed values, which shot up because of the rich buying up properties. We had the same thing in rural upstate NY. So the “high taxes” are a result of rich, non-Vermonters, not locals who have been here for decades or generations.

Those are definitely some negatives, but One huge Positive is that it is the safest place to live if you factor in Climate Change. We do have to worry about hurricanes but not nearly as much as North Carolina.

Vermont has been turned into, or trying to be turned into, a liberal, affluent utopia. Very expensive to live here and very hard to develop....its s land of many contradictions. Hypocrisy is rampant among the "utopia" set (ie those moving here for their own political, often selfish, reasons and then aggressively try to impose it on the local native heathen that must be brought up several notches in their eyes). And if there are no problems, they'll creat them. Makes it seem like long island they dearly miss but can no longer afford.
I love reading these comments. Your facts are true about the state, but I imagine that the same could be said of the Dakotas, Utah, Wyoming, etc. It is a Blue State but there are a lot of Republicans here that are not off the map liberal or in the basement Republicans. Without a doubt the property taxes are a problem but that's because of all the excessive social program funding. At the same time with a population of only around 640,000 that's really the only way to pay for them. People here, at least in the NEK are friendly and tend to keep to themselves. Housing is a problem because during COVID the people from CT, MA, NJ & NY gobbled all the affordable housing at the time. It is also only 1 of 6 states that tax Social Security Benefits which is a problem for some retirees. I find that as someone who moved to the NEK from NJ is that people here don't like change, so the resist any kind of consolidation of services, there are 17 separate electric utilites in this state (which is weird for a state this size), and of course schools. So as someone mentioned, the state is not for everyone.
Green Mountain Power seems to have a monopoly on power in most areas. I don't deal with many other companies for home sales. I do hear it a lot about social security tax and I think even some military pensions are taxed unlike other states.
100% Yes!!! And the Military pension is TAXED! It is tough f to watch our hard-earned dollars go to NARCAN and free drugs for repeat offenders. Most of the roads need work. The salt is overdone on most roads as well. Our Governor has a tough job trying to keep the peace. Also, if you only live here 6 months you can vote. It is one of the reasons Bernie got in office. He canvassed the college kids who don't live here full-time. Burlington used to be a wonderful safe town bc the police didn't put up with all the shenanigans we have now.
How hard is it to get building permits if you buy land or a house with land and want to build a barn, shed or workshop? I realize in populated downtown areas like Burlington and Rutland they may not be handing out building permits like candy, but if you had 10 or 15 acres a few miles outside town, how much do they bust balls over building your own stuff? Also how is the fiber internet coming along? I live in a rural county over in NYS and my local phone company got grants to install fiber internet and its changed everything in all the ways you can imagine, outstanding connectivity , and very attractive to remote workers. Last question how often does the power go out?
Like you said, populated areas not so much... 10-15 acres outside of town or in small towns are usually not very strict at all. Where I live in Williamstown, we don't even have zoning! Fiber is available in a large portion of the state, seems to be randomly spread around but a lot of rural places you wouldn't expect would have it do. Power goes out relatively often in winter storms, funny because we lost in for a few hours today in a windy storm but usually it's just that a few hours not that often. It's enough of a hassle to want a generator if you can. Cities lose power less often typically. Rural areas aren't often as quickly back to power.
I'm from Michigan originally but have lived in New Hampshire for 11 years. However I was a currier for 4 years from 2020 until 2024 and drove something like 300,000 miles in Vermont, mostly the 89 corridor from White River Junction to Burlington, and then over to Rutland. I can say that the lack of snow removal at night is a huge problem. As a state policy, no plows operate on the major highways at night. Some towns like Burlington will operate their own in the city limits, but most do not. This is super dangerous and criminal given how how the tax burden is. How can New Hampshire tax so much less, and yet still manage to keep the roads clear all night? The states are almost identical in size and weather and terrain. Couple good things, circumcision rates are pretty low which is great and they have pretty good laws around nudity....essentially that its legal. If you want to find a nude beach, you really cant find one in NH or Main, but they are easy to find in Vermont.
Not pros I'd normally bring up 😂 But yea they could do better on the plowing late at night. Usually they seem to just leave it til the morning to see what falls in some areas
@@LivinginVermont Yeah probably they wouldn't make a top 10 list, but maybe a top 20! Its a policy to save money by not paying plow crews at night. I've driven on 89 more times than I can count where there were only two track style ruts left by other private cars or even virgin snow, only to cross the river into NH to find its been ploughed and salted already. Given the much higher taxes, almost identical size, climate and topography, this difference is scandalous.

Rural life is not for young folks. Meeting the love of your life might be difficult. That said... Vermont is awesome. Vermont is cooler than you'll ever be. lol
Yes, everyone don't come here. Go somehere that doesn't have these apparent problems for you. Why would you think of moving to, or consider moving somewhere that doesn't fullfill your expectations; good dating, lots of social oppotunities, good jobs for you personally, warm weather consistantly, strip malls with easy medical care, etc.... Please go to places where they have these things everwhere, with plenty crowded places for people who are trying to meet one another. What's the big deal? You go somewhere that has what you need. Don't complain if you have a choice. Everyone leave and let the landscape again be wandered by those that make concessions for the place they love. Don't we all do this. If not, maybe you're in the wrong place.
You forgot the commercial farmers and there nasty chemicals that they use to spray their gmo crops, Most have a "I don't give a crap attitude " also surprised on how the state allows some of the commercial farmers and there poorly maintenance equipment operate on the roads! They get away with a lot due to agriculture !! Far as an organic state, very misleading! Truly sad!
....there are volumes of reasons he didn't mention. I'm a bit bummed out that we have laws against billboards because they detract from the natural beauty, but our bucolic views of hayfields and ridge lines are filling up with solar panels and wind turbines. Instead of destroying established ecosystems, we should examine our insane dependence on electricity. As for GMO crops, I can't believe we allow them in Vermont. OMG, did you see the fields behind the Whale Tails? Hadn't been to Burlington since before Covid and I cried. Such ugly industrial nasty buildings. Looks like New Jersey, without billboards.
As the son of a large scale dairy farmer and knowing many others it's not so much an I don't care attitude it's more just that most of them have bought into all the lies that the government, pesticide companies, antibiotic companies, colleges etc. have sold them. They rely on the government for subsidies and while I believe all cows should be organic, Grass fed and finished (and regenerative), that is not what is paying the bills or what the government incentivises. 95% of customers are buying what is cheap and convenient not what is best for them. It's also hard to do large scale. I heard someone say "I saw on TV, it's easy to change, blah blah" but no, not when you have thousands of cows and have never done it another way. Most people have no clue how hard farmers work, they work harder than 99% of people. So quit the hate and appreciate that they are still feeding much higher quality food than all the factories and processed food companies. I'd rather have a rusty tractor driving in front of me than be driving around surrounded by factories. I support change, but the change starts with the people controlling milk prices, the government subsidizing the wrong things, the lying FDA and CDA, lobbyists and the colleges sending out all the farm managers. And yes, I hate solar panel fields and wind mills on our mountains but VT seems to love them. Put panels on your houses and knock down all the wind mills is my opinion.
Vermont doesn’t care about environmental issues. My brother in law moved there and got a job for the state agency that monitors environmental issues and he found many old farms just run their sewage into creeks and they don’t care because their attitude is that is the way it has always been done.
This is what happens with you have a financialized easy money place next to a rural area. The parasite class with access to cheap credit want out so they buy up what was formerly farming or blue collar communities and then gentrify. I look forward to when the financial system finally fails and this all reverses.
Honest question: Why would you make this video? Sure, you get points for honesty, but you're actively driving potential clients away! After watching this, I can't imagine anyone considering moving here (I've lived in Vermont for 22 years). Not saying you should lie, but at least let people reach their own conclusions without pushing them away!
@fredglazer2913 The young man is being honest. VT is not for everyone. (I've live there full time for the past 10 years, part time for 20 years.) Done and dusted with 6 months of winter, lack of doctors, dentists and vet care, driving 40 miles for pharmacy, etc.
Hey Fred, A lot of people appreciate the honesty! Some people aren't meant for VT and the people who are won't be deterred by this. The benefits outweigh the negatives in my opinion. That's why I've stayed!
Well, that was a quick assessment, but it totally depends on your age category. Do not necessarily agree with all your assumptions as a senior Vermonter.
Just live far from Burlington Vt and you'll be fine, nobody wants that plague there. If you have imagination, winter seoson and mud season are simply that, just seosons.
Burlington just keeps getting worse and worse. The Chief just stepped down. An anonymous poll showed that over 75% of the officers were burned out and did not feel supported. They cut 30% of the officers in '21 to put money into social programs to help the drug addicts. That has backfired. Now they cannot hire enough officers to keep up with the crime which has gotten "progressively" (PUN intended) worse. I won't go down there at night.
No promises! The taxes look a bit more appealing... It seems the market is a bit different now that I've been working in both states. God bless you as well! :)
@@LivinginVermont New Hampshire is horrible to live in and the taxes are not actually close to what you think they are either when owning property with all the regulations and radon all over the place underground. God Bless:)
U forgot one I just moved here last year from Columbus Ohio and the people are rude not nice at all and need some real stores Macy's or something might be leaving from here soon
I've found most Vermonters to be friendly, but guarded. They don't "Let you in" and it is tough to find friends if you don't get out and find your group. YES!!! Shopping is awful here!!! THANK GOD for the internet. Ironically, Vermont does not want big box stores and shopping here because they want you to support small businesses. I get that AND it is frustrating when these places don't have what you need. Also, big companies shy away from Vermont bc the more money you make, the more you get taxed. Good luck finding a job here as well bc of this, unless you want to work at the grocery or coffee house
Are you an American? Seems a travesty if you were not taught that in school... But you are one of many people who has no idea where Vermont is or if it is a part of Canada or not lol
My friend Brian that lives up there in Vermont is huddled with his wood stove all winter long, he is in his 80s so therefore you tend to get cold what other people don't think it's cold.
Who doesn't love to huddle around a woodstove? If your house is well insulated a woodstove will often heat up the whole house... But a lot of VT's old farmhouses are not that well insulated and you'll see people staple plastic over their windows to stop drafts

I love to snowboard but preferably on a sunny day!
Me too! I sure wish we would get some snow!!! It is dismal :(
Those are definitely some negatives, but One huge Positive is that it is the safest place to live if you factor in Climate Change. We do have to worry about hurricanes but not nearly as much as North Carolina.
If you can make it through the cold winters and occasional flooding rains then the weather is pretty mild compared to a lot of places!
@@LivinginVermont And Winters are getting milder by the year! Vermont will be like Virginia is in 10 years! Check out his video on the most dangerous places in the US. Why do people keep moving to these places? th-cam.com/video/l_Oe6YK0DgE/w-d-xo.html
Maybe but Vermont has experience devastating flooding for decades because the towns are in valleys.
@mrb152 Yes, but Springfield VT at least has a state of the art dam that keeps flooding from the Black River to a minimum.
Except for the flooding and mud season, it doesn't sound so bad.
Yea... I love it! And both those things can be avoided by choosing the right location and house
Unfortunately it needs some large changes!
LOVE Vermont...go there as. often as I can !
What is your favorite place to visit and why?
Keep these Vermont videos coming my good man! Moving there June 1st! Thank you sir!
I will do that! :) I hope your move goes well
I'm from Michigan originally but have lived in New Hampshire for 11 years.
Not pros I'd normally bring up 😂
But yea they could do better on the plowing late at night.
Wow, low circumcision rates and lots of nudity! There's more to see in Vermont than just the pretty leaves! 😳
😂😂
Vermont is wayyyy too expensive ! I am born and raised from Vermont but now live in Florida. Weather is much better down here too aside from dealing with hurricanes lol
Weather is better sometimes haha! A lot of Florida people move here because of how hot your summers are though. Funny how we rotate depending on the seasons
@@LivinginVermont I don’t mind the hot weather most of the time bc I’m someone who’s almost always cold haha. When I am hot I use the ac in the car or house so it’s fine
Spent 8 whole winters in VT and never struggled about any of this things… but I understand that many people from other states can easily feel forced to move out. Vermont is one of the most secure states to live.. nature, kind people and there is a lot of fun for the right people. Hallmark life is just everywhere ❤
Thank you for your input!
Some jokingly call your state "Vermud."
I grew up in Burlington. I graduated from high school in the early 70s. We went to Montreal for concerts and clubbing! I moved in 79 and only go back to visit relatives!
Burlington probably would be a shock for you to see it now
@@LivinginVermont No, I go back 3 or 4 times a year because I have siblings, and their children and grandchildren still live in the Burlington area. You're right though, if I just went back today, yes, I would be shocked. I enjoy your channel, thanks for a good job for VT.
@@LivinginVermont I go to Burlington 3 or 4 times a year. I still have siblings and their children and grandchildren living in the Burlington area. If I went back today for the first time, your right ai would be shocked.
Thank you Phil!
THanks! you always have good info for folks considering moving to Vermont
Thank you, I'm glad you think so! 😊
What video did you find most helpful?
Love the videos! My wife and I watch your stuff all the time. Super excited to see a new post. We are planning on visiting Vermont this year again and would like to move up there in 5 or so years. I'm looking for a good location maybe 30 minutes away from White River Junction as that's where the USPS processing plant is located.
Thank you for the nice words, glad to hear it! I have been bad about posting recently but got someone to do most of the editing for me with this one which made it a little less time consuming. I was just in White River Junction today picking up a new border collie puppy! 😁
Do you help people looking in southern Vermont or Southern New Hampshire? That’s where I am. And so much of what you said is so true! I just moved here from Oregon and it’s been a bit of a culture shock. Love it but different.
Hello! I do help Southern VT & NH as well! All of VT. I had a closing in Wilmington VT just recently 😊 reach out with any questions or if you need help
I will keep you in mind! Are you based in Burlington?
Rural life is not for young folks. Meeting the love of your life might be difficult. That said... Vermont is awesome. Vermont is cooler than you'll ever be. lol
I love VT, that's why I've stayed here while my friends leave haha. Also found my wife here but yea that's a large part of the problem for people
Yes, everyone don't come here.
Very accurate assessment, IMHO. Thanks.
Thank you, I'm glad you agree!
@@woowoochuggachugga 😪
Hopefully, things will start to get better now! Thank you, GOP!
Number 5 is Vermont's biggest problem, and the cause of most of its others.
I would agree with that. Unfortunately, it's too imbalanced.
what was #5 again?
@@elisethomas459 : Liberal politics.
Thanks. You talked me out of it.
Alright Steve! Hope I saved you some trouble. :)
Thank you Erika! All very valid
Hey Fred,
A lot of people appreciate the honesty! Some people aren't meant for VT and the people who are won't be deterred by this. The benefits outweigh the negatives in my opinion. That's why I've stayed!
So lies of omission in support of a higher cause.
@@LivinginVermont: Well said!
Well, that was a quick assessment, but it totally depends on your age category. Do not necessarily agree with all your assumptions as a senior Vermonter.
Hey! What do you think is different depending on age category? I'm not allowed to "steer" people based on age but you're welcome to share your views!
@@LivinginVermont Yes! I would like to know as well
Just live far from Burlington Vt and you'll be fine, nobody wants that plague there. If you have imagination, winter seoson and mud season are simply that, just seosons.
Our seasons aren't that bad, it's all perspective!
Well healthcare can create high paying jobs though i would add lack of public transportation as one
True. Public transportation is nonexistent in most places
@LivinginVermont also true so the state needs to bring in more investment for high paying jobs
Taxes are all relative. My father complained about the marginal tax rate at 90% in the 50s.
The income to expense ratio was also a lot different back then
I have to say that taxes may be high in Vermont, but you get your money's worth. It is a well run state.
Do NOT come to Vermont. Please.
Stop already. Its not for everyone, let them decide on their own. No need to fear monger people already. We've been here 3years now and love it.
Tell that to the migrants
It's a blue state...that's why the taxes are high....da...!!
True
Arkansas is one of the highest tax states, along with a few other southern states so STFU and go back to your Faux News
WOKE
Move to Arkansas. They don’t have child labor laws or worker rights. Awesome!
Just keep them out of New Hampshire!!! God Bless:)
God Bless:)
Yes! NH is horrible. Everyone especially from NY and MA need to know not to come here!
Never
Never what?
LIved here in the NEK for most of my 66 years. Born here. Because of climate change there are now as many as 9 mud seasons during the winter.
Good video but you should produce another good things
Thank you! Another video about the good things of Vermont you mean?
U forgot one I just moved here last year from Columbus Ohio and the people are rude not nice at all and need some real stores Macy's or something might be leaving from here soon
Ah, depends where you go. Most people are pretty friendly. Definitely not great malls or shopping. Thank God for the internet!
I’m so sad you said that because I’m also from Columbus Ohio and was thinking about moving to either Vermont or Delaware or Rhode Island… :(
I've found most Vermonters to be friendly, but guarded.

Us Vermonters are known for not pronouncing our "t"s 😁
My friend Brian that lives up there in Vermont is huddled with his wood stove all winter long, he is in his 80s so therefore you tend to get cold what other people don't think it's cold.
Who doesn't love to huddle around a woodstove? If your house is well insulated a woodstove will often heat up the whole house... But a lot of VT's old farmhouses are not that well insulated and you'll see people staple plastic over their windows to stop drafts
