That's damned expensive way to lose races, too. Because it gets it figurative doors blown off by the real sailing yachts out there. I guess if you're going to lose you might as well act like that was your intent all along and look "good" doing it.

2.05 The fantastic Falcone Maltese of Perini Navi. It's awesome! I have seen it many time at La Spezia (Italy). Unique for beauty (amazing!) and technology. It can be controlled with just a joystick, with fully automatic wings.

While I do admire all the graceful hulls with the genoa and mainsails, there is something about the Maltese Falcon that is well matched though I am not so keen about the efficiency of its sailing arrangement. I prefer the old genoa and mainsail arrangement but of course the push button control of setting the sail on the Maltese Faclon is attractive had I to sail it alone across an ocean!!. Whenever I see sailing boats, I go for the wave motion around the hull to decide on its efficiency and in this video all the hulls are so well designed such that the bow and rear waves around the hulls are not so high. Most of the hulls seem to be going at their limiting speeds decided by the wave fitting in the hull. I do believe that those hulls should not be designed on a straight line water level but a sine distribution from bow to stern where the accelerations of the water around the hull are kept to a minimum . Beauty in motion all the way and modern hulls with modern materials seem to be reaching the best one could reach. I prefer the single weighted hull for long distance sailing as they are kind on the waist of the occupiers. These very fast planing sailing hulls, are for young people who want to get home faster. The beauty of sailing ships should be given importance and not too many cold designs should be made, even though they may be more efficient as far as speed is concerned. There is beauty in majesty , elegance and a harmony that is permutated and combined by different elements of a sailing hull. What is seen in this video earns the title of a superyacht. Lucky are the people who sail in them.

Maybe - but these vessels have GRACE, personality, and are utterly useless beyond the pleasure they provide. Mass produced aircraft are beautiful in a more antiseptic and prosaic way (IMO) - although I have seen some tremendous restored B-17's and P38's.

They are not useless. They were used even into the sixties as the lack of fuel made it competative. Only recently perhaps due to economic boom caused by computers have people not found that opportunity worth their time. In a more normal economy it may come about again.

The only thing about these yachts that’s carbon-free is the means of propulsion (when they’re not motoring). But ever other aspect of them is very carbon- intensive.

How did 1000 people pollute enough to start climate change alone? We all did it, raising standards of living for everyone comes with a carbon cost as consumption increase dramatically.
Lord knows the big V-4 2 cycle outboard I drove in the '70's put out a LOT of pollution, several times more than any car ever. SO I came up with a motor that would exhuast pure water, and run under water, then the plans were stolen and I was killed with the help of my Yachting family... I got better, Lord knows.
