Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a TH-cam video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

He would always come home stinking of hops but would always brink us a string of hops to take to school to put on the nature table,oh what memories 😊

In Worcestershire during the 1950's and earlier, families from Birmingham came out to hop farms to pick the hops. For many it was the only time they left the city and treated it like a holiday and earn money by doing the work and camp in primitive conditions.

Kent was traditionally the hop growing area of England, and whole families would take themselves there for their summer holidays to enjoy the sun and earn some money picking hops in the fields. Many of them were factory workers and presumably did not get paid while their factories were closed for summer break.

    • @brianbradley6744
      @brianbradley6744 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes, we did get paid during the holidays (vacations). The hop growing in Kent is nowhere as big as it used to be with most oast houses (hop drying houses) being turned into housing. There is are examples of this on the road from Canterbury to Faversham and between Canterbury and Ashford. I watched hop drying in the latter in a school holiday.

Love this video! Hop Festival always reminds me of home. I try to get back for Faversham Hop Festival but missed it this year. Its always good fun. Bands are always local so you get some good some bad. I normally end up at the Market Inn by the Rec, they normally have a stage up and last time I went they had Kent based Soul band Rubber Biscuit who are brilliant if you get a chance to see them. You do look like you got nice and merry which is the way to be!
Tell you a little story about hops....I was once travelling on the train back from Canterbury with some American Tourists adjacent to me, talking about how Faversham is full of hop fields for the local beer and how its famous for it... Then just passing a hop field his wife looks out the window and says "Are they what you're talking about?" and he replied "Nah, they're Grapes!".... Quietly cackling away at myself the other side lol

Another local village is having a bear festival. In May the Wool Sack races are held in Malmesbury. Fun races with a large 4 x 4 ft sack filled with sheared wool fleas on your back. Same with the Cheltenham cheese rolling races down Coopers Hill in May. You have keep your eyes open to find these things and when.

One of the terms that used to be quite regional, was the way kids would refer to playing truant from school - 'bunking off', 'skiving', 'wagging it' and more. In London - especially South and East London, it would be referred to as 'hopping it'.
It was a term that came from the tradition of poorer families heading to Kent, where they would combine hop picking with a family 'holiday'. - a couple of weeks away from the smoke and bustle, families staying on farms, sleeping in barns or tents. Kids getting to see their first cow etc. - a couple of weeks that families really looked forward to, and some old folk still remember fondly. - very cute outfit, by the way

Fav might have to change the name of the Hop fest soon because hardly any hops are grown in kent anymore . Hops were ubiquitous in kent once - hence the plethora of oast houses for drying hops . There is alao a tree museum in faversham called Brogdale .. Along with hops kent lost many of its traditional apple , pear , and cherry orchards . They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum and they charged all the people a dollar and a half just to see them - Big Yelliw Taxi by joni Mitchell. Hey Alanna, if you're going to go to these cute British country festivals, there is a classic British film you should probably watch - The Wicker Man - Just saying. :D

I thought it was a documentary!
Some of those Morris Dancers in the video looked like they were waiting for an "outsider" to show up.
      Wait...

@@Escapee5931 I'm wondering if nobody has told her ya know? I dont think they have. Those Morris dancers ...that's deep Pagan ritual from thousands of years ago right there - nobody stops to ask what the bells and sticks and handkerchiefs are for. Ya dont mess with these people.

Hiya Alanna (said quietly). I "can nad a" drunk that much myself. OK, probably could. I'm glad that you got so much cider inside 'er. I noticed the rehydration bottle in the corner, I recommend tomato juice with a bit of the old Lea and Perrin's for the morning, thank you for keeping us entertained. 😁👍

It would appear that Faversham was established as a settlement before the Roman conquest. However, the name 'Faversham' is of Old English origin, meaning "the metal-worker's village".

I remember you saying a while back you'd like to visit Cambridge. If you liked that hop fest, I can recommend Cambridge's beer festival in May. If you go to an afternoon session entry is free and it's not too crowded, it's on a field and there are at least some tables and chairs provided. They do beer, cider and wine, plus there's a great cheese counter and a range of other food. You could easily do a day at that and a day sightseeing and punting.

I forgot that fruit and hops were a big Kent thing - hops for brewing. At harvest time, poorer Londoners used to come out for employment as casual labourers and for a working holiday.
H E Bates wrote about it - "The Darling Buds of May", "A Breath of French Air", "When the Green Woods Laugh", "Oh! To Be in England" and "A Little of What You Fancy" and there have been several TV adaptations.
Ya did well for multiple pints, Alanna ...no longer a lightweight 🥴 (I feel that YT has trained you well, young Padawan)
    Scary crowds 😨
