So you spend 419,000 USD to heavily modify G-klasse, and all you get is a VERY expensive car for which you will never find spare parts even in Germany, let alone Africa. I have a better idea. Why not buy an Unimog for 150,000, add an AMAZING camper for another 50,000, save 200,000 for souveniers and have 6 more inches of ground clearance? OR!!! You can buy a Mercedes-Benz Vario 4x4 for 50,000, modify it with Bundeswehr off-road kit, add the same 50,000 for the camper equipment and have a larger cabin, same 18" clearance and 250,000 USD for souveniers. In other words, this G-klasse camper is STUPID.
Or buy a Toyota that will run. Oh wait... there is one, right in this video. Toyota is like the Rolls Royce of the third world.

And his remarks remain true, an expedition vehicle should go anywhere and should carry very less risk of causing trouble. It breaks the meaning of expedition vehicle when it cant be fixed in most parts of the world.

Es soll Leute geben,die kaufen sich WoMo´s für eine Million. Und einen Anhänger für 20000€ und da kommt dann das gelbe Teil drauf! Die paar € sind doch kein Problem für die "Portokasse".

Für den Preis des G bekomme ich einen Unimog 5023 mit allem was das Herz begehrt , und dann hält mich kaum was auf.
… aber der ist groß, schwer und kein G ;) Ich hab mal in dem Ding auf der Abenteuer&Allrad drin gestanden, ich war sehr erstaunt, wieviel Platz da drin ist. Klar ist das Ding von vorne bis hinten unvernünftig, aber trotzdem, oder gerade deswegen, ein Traumcamper.

Das Teil wurde im Deutschland gefertigt, mit geringen Stückzahlen und aus deutscher Ingenieursarbeit. Ihr könnt den nicht mit einem Serienwagen vergleichen wie Ford Transit 4x4, Fiat Ducato usw.
Alleine die Portalachsen mit den Sperren kosten ein Vermögen😂 Auch wenn ich persönlich das Geld lieber im ein Haus stecken würde, finde ich es geil das der Hersteller die Eier hat so ein gewagtes Projekt anzugehen. Hut ab!
das ist auch eher so Beispiel was man machen kann. Bin mir nicht sicher ob die wirklich so einen verkauft haben. Aber als Präsentationsfahrzeug eigentlich top!

This would be the only RV I would buy. I don't understand RVs in the USA, they make these giant tow behind trailers that you can't take anywhere. Seems like an RV should be mobile and compact to get you back into the woods.

The G-class problem is the price. That's why Mercedes G-class has become an absurd feshion for millionaires, not a car that can be seen in safari. European laws have unjustly discriminated against the Toyota Land Cruiser 70, which is the only true Safari car that can be bought at a normal price. Sad but true, yes.

Immer interessant zu sehen, was man so alles machen kann und der G sieht schon beeindruckend aus. Würde ich mit dem auf Weltreise gehen wollen? Eher nicht. 365k in Mauretanien, Nigeria, Kasachstan oder Pakistan spazieren zu fahren entspräche nicht meinem Konzept von unter dem Radar fliegen und sicherem Reisen. Und selbst in Südmarokko würde ich wohl lieber ein Ersatzteil für einen Toyota Hilux ordern und einbauen lassen, als für einen G. Wenn man wirklich das Geld hat und die Welt entdecken will, dann besser den Nestle Hilux kaufen und im Notfall mit dem Restbetrag Hilfe einfliegen oder sich selbst ausfliegen lassen. Und wenn das Auto mal ganz weg ist, einfach einen neuen kommen lassen. ;)
Und sind wir mal ehrlich: Wer würde ein knapp 400.000 EURO teures Auto im Gelände schon soweit an seine Grenzen bringen wollen, dass man die Offroadqualitäten des Super-Gs auch alle wirklich braucht und man mit einem Hilux nicht mehr weiter käme. Ich würde es wohl nicht tun - vor allem nicht, wenn das Fahrzeug auch gleichzeitig mein Zuhause wäre. Aber toll steht er schon da mit seinen Portalachsen und den riesigen Rädern. Der unscheinbare Nestle / Exkab Hilux ist jedoch mein Gewinner in dieser ungleichen Gegenüberstellung.

Es soll auch nicht preiswert sein. Das ist für Superreiche die nicht wissen wohin mir dem Geld.
70.000 € für den Umbau auf Unimog-Portalachsen? Dafür gibt es schon fast einen kompletten UNIMOG U218 oder U4023, da lässt man sich dann noch einen schicken Alukoffer auf- und ausbauen und kommt durch so ziemlich jedes Gelände! Und wenn man will, kann man hinten auch noch eine kleine Yacht dranhängen - oder sich für 365.000 € gleich eine sehr anständige Yacht kaufen!!!
Bei den Achsen handelt es sich nicht um Unimog Achsen. Es sind nahezu die identischen Achsen, welche im G63 6x6 und G500 4x4² verbaut werden ;)
Hab das mal nachgesehen - Du hast Recht, an diese Achsen sind aussen Portalachsgetriebe (Radvorgelege) angeflanscht, dadurch liegen die Differentiale oberhalb der Achsmitte, ergibt mehr Bodenfreiheit. Es gibt für den G aber auch einige Umbauten auf "echte" Unimog-Achsen, kann man durch den Leiterrahmen mit vertretbarem Aufwand realisieren. Wie auch immer, 70K € nur für die Achsen ist utopisch, und mehr als ein neuer Atego 923 A komplett (nur Fahrgestell) kosten würde - so ein Fahrzeug wäre selbst aufgebaut für ein Drittel dieses Preises (120K anstatt 365K) machbar, auch als 7,5t für diejenigen, die keinen LKW-Führerschein haben, aber dafür mit ganz anderen Platzverhältnissen im Aufbau...
Incredible machine. One ting that was silly was that rear cargo hatch. Why do they have it open up and then you have to duck under it to see or get anything? Clearly it should open down like a tailgate. Then you could easily access the storage and would have a functional work surface with the door open. Strange oversight on such an epic vehicle.
it's not storage..it's the technical bits....water heater, etc. But I get your point
it's so that while you're connecting the hoses and cables, no water will collect on that door.

Way too expensive! I like the door front he drivers cabin to the camper. I like the materials. But the toilet doesn't look comfortable. The bed is more like an RV guest bed and for that price it's not worth it. The back compartment door needs to open more. Just things are off especially for this price

Du wirst nicht glauben wieviel wohlhabende Weltreisende unterwegs sind, wir haben in der letzten 39 Monaten unserer Weltreise, so einiges gesehen und staunten immerwieder....Neidisch? Nein im Gegenteil die Kisten schreien nur nach Geld, und ziehen dementsprechend die "falschen" Menschen an. All dieser Schnick Schnack wie Gasdruckdämpfer in der oberen Schränken lebt nicht lange, die GFK Karosse muss nur einmal einen Baum oder dicken Ast berühren, am besten noch im Regen...spätestens dann merkt man wie unsinnig ein GKF Aufbau auf Weltreise ist.

I would suggest a road test in Northern Ontario, or in some of the northern States just to see how it would do in extreme conditions weather wise & temp. Try it around Jan or Feb. Good luck...

365k € ist der Karren einfach nicht wert, kann mir jeder erzählen was er will. Für das Geld, müsste schon alles aus CFK sein, vom Aufbau bis zu jeder Schublade.
Erstens will das nicht jeder, zweitens wär es dann vermutlich noch teurer.

215.000 Euro für einen Unicat auf Unimog? Da schreiben wir uns direkt mit in die Bestellliste mit ein. Selbst Bimobil ruft schon mindestens 280.000 auf..
Ok mit Portalachsen kommt man wohl wesentlich weiter ,fährt sich aber auch irgendwann mal wesentlich fester (man will ja schließlich auch die Technik im Gelände anspruchsvoll nutzen) möglicherweise ganau da wo bestenfalls noch größeres Gerät oder ein Heli hinkommt. Hat man sich mal richtig bei der Bergung eingesaut möchte ich nicht wissen wie nachher der Innenraum aussieht. Na ja wer zu viel Kohle hat,oder schon alles besitzt... ha ha ha! Dann lieber gleich einen Unimog.

What must be understood is that heavy modifications to a vehicle while enhansing some aspects seriously compromises other. In engineering one cannot have everything at once and this must be evaluated along with the additional cost for the mods.

LOL, hilarious waste of money. Portal kit for the Hilux axle (not $80k but about $10k) and I would take the Toyota any day. They will not sell one, not even this ridiculously yellow demo. Keep your eyes on the bankruptcy auctions and get if for $35k.
