This is very cool, ill be moving into a tiny shed house soon and was wondering how to make some kind of loft bed to save space, that my dog can get up easily since he likes to sleep in my bed with me, that i can double as shelves or drawers. I think if I do something like this but a bit wider with a guard rail, all my requirements will be met. Thanks for documenting your build for the internet
My 12 yo grandson and I built the bed but we couldn't figure out stairs the way I wanted. This is mostly what I had in mind, except i have a window to work the 1st step around. My grandson is pretty tall so I'm going to make taller steps and less of them ❤

These look great. I got the lumber for this project, except, my daughter wants 'cubby's'. A standard cubby is 12", with cubby bins/baskets measuring 11". I have to adjust heights of steps to allow them to fit and, of course, add 1 X 12's to divide up individual cubby boxs. Still using your pattern, though. Thx
Great idea and well made. looks solid and is definitely a great use of space for additional storage. Just a suggestion (we are by no means professionals but we ran into a similar issue in the past.) Consider cutting out the floor board just where the stairs are. You will then be able to push the stairs flat up against the wall for even better stability, and you can probable anchor it to the wall for even better support to the stairs and the bed. Great build. Keep producing content!

Hey Mike, I've don't recall seeing 2x14 at homedepot. You can definitely get it from your local building supply store or lumberyard. They may have it in stock or they'll order some for you. Yeah, 2x12 is a little narrow but it's fine for the kids. That guy is pretty good with a table saw! Good luck on your project buddy, Take care :)
Good job man, I just built a loft bed for me and my wife in the kids room but my wife hates using the ladder so I'm going to do something like this but maybe like those storage cube things she uses for the kids toys. Did you have to use the L brackets?
Hey Amanda! (Or Amanda's husband) I measured for those storage cubes originally but after a trial run the stairs were a bit to high for my kids to climb. So the space between each step is a bit smaller than your typical 11-12in storage cubes. I did find a smaller versions of the storage cubes that would fit but decided not to get them. If you want the regular storage cubes to fit I recommend you do a trail run with the steps at a 13 1/2 in rise and see if you're ok with it. (13 1/2in rise will give you 12in of space in each shelf because the wood is 1 1/2in thick) I'm happy to say I didn't use any L brackets! I wasn't sure if I would need to add them but after I built everything the stairs are solid. Make sure you use the thicker screws (#10 or #12) and wood glue every joint. Also, for extra support, you could have them up against a wall or attached to something at the top and bottom steps. Let me know how it goes! Take care :)
Hey Destinpieters, I just used regular construction grade wood. I sanded it smooth and painted it. You could really used any wood you desire. You might even be able to make these from site milled trees. Good luck :)
I’m adult and I just bought a metal loft bed but the ladder hurts my feet going down. I can’t find anyone who has a metal stair step I can put beside my bed it’s like they don’t sell just steps for bunk beds. I can’t build things myself lol so I was wondering could have someone build me this wood stair steps that I can put besides my metal bed.
Hey Soosai Steven, I totally agree! My kids a older so it's not a worry for me. You could easily add a handrail that attaches to the stairs if you have concers for your younger children. Take Care :)

Hey Jennifer, I bought everything from homedepot. And this is the perfect project for a tight budget! Each set of stairs stairs cost approximately $70 (Canadian) in materials. This doesn't include the paint because I already had some. I heard lumber prices have increased lately so this might cost a bit more. We also live on a budget and thats why I decided to build these rather then buy something similar. You won't be disappointed! My kids love these beds and stairs! Let me know how it goes :) Take Care

Hey Michael, I just used 3inch #10 wood screws. I also used wood glue on every joint so they don't squeak or wobble. I had a friend mention that the shear strength on wood screws isn't the best. He suggested I put some framing nails in. I never added the nails. I haven't had any issues. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need anything else :) Take Care

Hey Sandra, I used a good quality furniture paint. First I primed them with regular wood primer then I used "CIL Smart3 Wash and Wear Furniture and Cabinet Melamine". This stuff is expensive but I've used it on a bunch of different projects and it's really good. It has a nice thick finish and protects against wear. I'm sure there's other paints out there that are similar too. Hope that helps Take care :)
Hey Krystal, I used the run of a mill construction lumber. They are 2x12 (the actual measurements are 1-1/2 by 11-1/4) I think in total each set of stairs uses around 23ft. If you take a look at the diagram I wrote all the measurements for you. You're going to want to sand the boards after you cut them. Prime them before you paint too. Hey Rebecca, I put glue on each joint then I screwed the joint together. It's quite a strong joint. And there's no squeezing, creecking or wobble. I used two screws for every vertical joint and three screws for every horizontal joint. I used 3 inch #10 screws. I hope this helps! Take Care :)

Hey Omn, I glued and screwed when I built this with wobble factor in mind. Make sure you use good quality wood screws and wood glue. I've also heard if you want to be sure you have good shear strength you could add some framing nails. Good luck with your project and let me know how it goes :) Take Care

Looks very good, but not safe for kids less than 5 years old. No rails, no safety handles, cornered edges.... Hmmm
