  • Companies across sectors are talking of investments and increased productivity from Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML). In this talk, Rukun Tarachandani (PPFAS MF - Fund Manager) takes a look at why & how AI/ML is making a difference to business, the challenges that companies face in adopting AI/ML and the companies that are trying to address those challenges.

To somewhat describe the ongoing hype of AI:
As a CS (computer science) professional, what we have noticed more often than not is, a lot of companies (even large blue chip companies), use simple prediction based on sample datasets (say a representative in X group meeting certain criteria did Y in this situation, hence others that meet that representative group and are in a similar situation would continue to do Y) and then label it as AI using ML.
In fact AI/ML has become such a commonly thrown around term, that anyone, who even remotely has nothing to do with AI, talks about things like "Ab toh desh pragati kar raha hai, har shetra mein AI/ML jo aa gaya hai", "Arey WhatsApp pe news ab AI/ML check kar deta hai, toh kuch bhi fake nahi hota", etc etc.
What, at least professionals in any discipline, must try and do is, take a CS 101 course on a website like Udacity or Coursera to understand the basics of CS and that apply that to how they could use CS concepts to build a system that uses AI to do something. This thought process can then be used to realistically determine if when companies say they are using AI/ML for so and so, are they really doing so?

Thank you for sharing knowledge. It helps to create wealth without scratching heads, just invest through SIP and invest in every significant dip to make more in long-term. Peacefully focus on primary profession. I'm happy didn't study in expensive institutions and investing to make more. Otherwise, salaries are less than interest on capital🙏

Great presentation.. @7:40 you mentioned that rule based systems falls under AI. Can we really place rule based systems under AI (since we can create them with very basic program codes)?
    Thanks!

Hi Priyadarsh, The idea behind Rules Based systems was that an Expert would translate his/her knowledge into the code base and consequently the program would have similar knowledge as the expert. When viewed in this light, Rules based systems should be classified as Artificial Intelligence. However over time it was realised that in most domains the number of rules that would have to be coded would be quite a lot and maintaining/updating these rules proved to be a challenge. In most domains, its just not possible to enumerate all the different rules and exceptions. Consequently the use of Rules based systems has come down materially over time.
