I've read that too. He composed some wonderful tunes, O'Carolan. It's said that he plagiarized a lot but it's easy for us to say that about past greats like Shakespeare and so on hundreds of years later. This one does lend itself very well to the jaunty English sound, it almost encapsulates the soundtrack of British pluckiness. Testament to the good writing of O'Carlan I suppose. Good tunes travel well. I've heard good English tunes played at Irish sessions, haste to the wedding and the sloe to name just two.
I didn't know that, interesting, because Ashley Hutchins in his autobiography says with Morris On he was trying to move away from Irish fiddle tunes, and move more towards purely English tunes, wonder if he knew?
I know, play and like Carolan’s E minor version, but I’m afraid the tune predates him. It’s almost certainly English (see Frank Kidson’s article in Musical Times, October 1, 1894).

I should add that when I mentioned Carolan's E minor version that it is actually printed in Donal O'Sullivan's book in F minor - I just happen to play it in E minor. Incidentally, although the minor version is usually accredited to Carolan, I'm not sure he could have played the D sharp (in E minor) or the E natural (in F minor), but perhaps I err. The major version of the tune, played here, is gloriously English - not Irish, Celtic (whatever that means) and certainly not Welsh.

My original was rendered unplayable by our two year old son pushing it around on a concrete floor. I still have it, but bought the CD to replace it.
