A home made Margherita pizza, with 80g of fresh mozzarella, a teaspoon of pecorino, basil, tomato on a homemade 200g dough ball (water, flour, salt, yeast) works out to under 600 calories for the whole thing. You should be able to fit that in your diet if you budget through the day.
Here in sweden I have noticed an uptake in "fresh" pizza dough in stores. Also non frozen ready to bake pizza is gaining in popularity. And in some pizzerias, you can buy just a ball of dough.
Dr. Oetker may be produced in Canada too, but it's originally a German company. Their "Ristorante" doesn't have a typical pizza dough, it's strangely cookie-like; but at least there is a version with mushrooms and without ham or other additions, which is what I sometimes fancy. Now they've also got other brands of frozen pizza, like the "Pizza Tradizionale" with a more typical dough and "Die Ofenfrische" which isn't fully baken yet, so that it gets the baking finish in the oven. As for flavours, I think I prefer on the one hand spinach, which I always refine with some olive oil and garlic powder and on the other hand diavolo with spicy salami, onions and perhaps peperoncino.
Spinach with olive oil and garlic sounds like a delicious upgrade, and diavolo with spicy salami and onions definitely packs a punch! It’s all about finding the perfect combo for your taste buds!
Dr. Oetker is a staple for me, always got one in the freezer if I can't be bothered to cook the day or have no leftovers. I actually think their standard peperoni pizza is the worst of their stock (we don't talk about Pizza Pasta)

About a year ago, we got the brand Crosta & Mollica here in the supermarket in the Netherlands and it's probably the best brand for frozen pizzas in my opinion
Vincenzo saying he used to go for the Canadian brand of pizzas when in his 20s filled me with pride as a Canadian. Then came the taste test. Then the realization that we also invented pineapple on pizzas with the Hawaiian pizza... You know what, our pizza game SUCKS! XD Also Vincenzo, I know that you hate a lot on peperoni, for it not being italian and not being salami, but did you know that it was actually invented by italians in the US as a way to create a product that was similar to salami, but using ingredients available in the US?
Unfortunately for me, it was a Greek immigrant to Canada that invented Hawaian. And I'm saying "unfortunately" because I'm from Greece. I have no idea what the hell the guy was thinking. He should have stuck to yeeros.
Gonna disagree with you on that pineapple thing. I know it is a weird battle. No other topping including anchovies provokes people so much. I also like figs or pears on pizza when paired properly. I have a thing for pineapple and fresh sliced jalapenos on a pizza. Sweet and spicy.
yes, the pineapple on pizza debate will forever be a Canadian legacy! As for pepperoni, it’s interesting how Italian immigrants in the U.S. adapted to create something new. It may not be traditional, but it’s definitely made its mark on pizza culture.
Surprised to see Dr. Oetker Ristorante in the video! We used to have a stack of their mozzarella pizza in the freezer when I was young. So many of us grew up eating/surviving on that German frozen pizza as poor students. 😂 Even you, Vincenzo!! I can't believe it. 😁
@@pacoro84 My mom used to cook fresh every single day but also bought frozen emergency foods for us when we were little because she worked long, long hours 7 days a week, and you never know. As a uni student, I mostly ate vegetables, grains, and stews. ;) I don't eat frozen foods anymore but in my student days, they were much cheaper... I only recently found out (as I always walk past the frozen aisle) that frozen pizza in my country costs between 5 - 8€ a piece nowdays (which is around 5.5 - 9 USD or 8 - 13 AUD), which is just insane!!

Frozen pizzas definitely serve a purpose, but frankly I stay away from ones with toppings, which can be of very dubious quality. I tend to get the best value acceptable Margarita, and then add my own anchovies, chilli, mushrooms, salami, tuna, olives, whatever. Because I KNOW that the anchovies, tuna, and salami I buy are already very good. Blue cheese, goat cheese, even camembert - whatever decent ingredients you have in the fridge basically. It does affect the recommended cooking time a little one way or the other (i.e. watery things like mushrooms or fresh tomato will slow it down more than just adding a few anchovies or a different type of cheese) @Vincenzo's Plate it would be interesting see a 'How to pimp up a frozen Margarita' video!
For example, a Dr Oetker (?) mushroom pizza is good with a bit of good blue cheese and a sprinkle of Oregano. Finish with Grana Padano Or a plain margarita is good with a few anchovies, good tuna, chillies and black olives. If you get their pepperoni one, add some fresh chilli, quite thinly sliced red bell peppers, and a dab of cream cheese here and there (or something like feta or ricotta)
@@ursmax Good point, especially with the mushrooms. But for tomatoes, I think that would break the shape a bit more than wanted for this use/suggestion. And of course, take everything I've said with a pinch of salt until Vincenzo gives a verdict, no? 😀
@@mariuscheek Hehe, I hear ya. Of course tomatoes usually go with a pinch of salt ;) That said, might be worth baking them so the water can evaporate. Plenty of options, not saying any one has exclusivity.
Yummy. I also prefer just cheese and a Neapolitan style. I like your choice of toppings and since you say tuna I'm guessing you are not in the US. 😄 I love mushrooms on pizza but in a home oven they just make things too wet. I saute them before topping them.
I dont think any of these are available here in Texas, but this was still fun. I am lucky to have a local mom and pop pizzeria I try to support when I crave the pizza!
Ristorante Pepperoni and add some extra mozzarella to it is one of my favorites. My favorite frozen pizza is Grandiosa Pepperoni family size, it's only available in nordic countries. You can taste spices in the pepperonis and it doesn't need extra cheese. So they nailed the most important parts of the pizza and that's why it's my favorite.
Unfortunately I don’t see any of those pizzas available here in the United States with the exception of the first one. Aldi does not carry those pizzas in the US.
Ofc, as Dr. Oetker is a German company. ^^ I always liked the touch of pesto (?) on their mozzarella pizza. Haven't eaten one in over 20 years, though.
1:19 In my country this pizza is made in Germany. My go-to frozen pizza is this same brand, Ristorante Quattro Formaggi pizza and I always tune it to my taste with salmon, kalamata olives, pineapple and garlic, Lovely!!!❤
Industrial pizza dough after fermentation I believe sometimes is folded on conveyor rollers after it is stretched out on the same conveyors before it is flattened to be cut into circles with the offcuts extracted for reuse. it would explain the lines. i worked in an industrial bakery for over 10 years and i assume that it is shaped similarly to meat pie crusts. You cant tell with pastry because it needs to be flaky anyway, bread is a different story. Either that or the topping layer is added on top after par-baking the bottom to avoid burning/melting your top ingredients when you take it home and re heat it so you get a better pizza. Most if not all Aussie supermarkets who make "FREAH BREAD" actually get bread parbaked frozen in a lined box and finish the baking instore, Coles used to do this and still might however i know for a fact Aldi gets there bread delivered fresh everyday at least in the state of Victoria Australia.
I'm from the UK my new favourite pizza is from Tesco and it's ZiZi rustic pizza with prosciutto cotto, mushrooms and creamy mascarpone sauce and comes with basil oil for drizzling. Very nice. I also like their piccante pepperoni pizza with salami slices, pepperoni crumble and spicy peppers, and this one comes with chili oil for drizzling for that extra kick

it's become common for the supermarkets to have refrigerated pizzas as well which are usually better than the frozen ones, maybe you should start a new category and do a comparison of those as well
do not know. For me it is basically the same industry stuff not frozen and sold for a much higher prize because it is not frozen. Clever marketing strategy but makes pizza not better. The good thing beeing they are often only in a foil package avoiding additional paper waste and you really see what you are buying. The difference between the paper package print and reallity often beeing quite a shock...
Refrigerated pizzas I think can offer a different experience compared to frozen ones. A comparison of those could be really interesting and helpful for finding the best option. Thanks for the suggestion!
Vincenzo, I am going in defense of pineapple on pizza. I love HAWAIIAN "pizza", ham, pineapple, and green bell pepper. Please note I said HAWAIIAN, not Italian. I always thought of this a an island creation and not representative of Italy in any fashion. A funny side note, the Hawaiians are crazy for Spam, and they make a "pizza" with that, too! Chicago makes a peanut butter and jelly pizza! I think the term "pizza", when created outside of Italian cuisine, is really is flexible, meaning any combination of ingredients on top of a disk of dough.
Tried two of Aldi's Best and you're right, they're good. Added a few extra bits but that's personal choice. The base was good, the default toppings fine - to me fine (Engineer...) means exactly that i.e. exactly as you would hope for. I've bought 3 more so that's a +ve. I used a round pizza tray with holes (Amazon - $11) and it worked perfectly, probably better than the pizza stone I might normally use TBH.
If you can get your hands on table 87 frozen pizza, you should do it. They are frozen pizzas from New York City that are made in a fire brick oven. They are absolutely amazing and probably the best frozen pizza you’ll ever eat.
We have really good Frozen Pizzas in Sweden and the best ones right now are ''Coop - Pizza Cheese Trio American style'' and ''Coop - Pepperonipizza American style'' and 'Grandiosa - Pizza X-tra Allt Pepperoni''.. YUM!! You should also add your own sauce to the pizza to make it even more delicious! We also have Ristorante Pizza Pepperoni and it is serviceable to fill your stomach but not a joy to eat, it is ok if you add sauce. The problem with many frozen pizzas is that they are trying to be too much, Pepperoni is usually the best because it is hard to mess up. We got a lot of weird pizzas but frozen toppings are usually not very good when re-heated.
I like these tests. Unfortunately we do t have the same brands for all the things you taste test in the US so I usually can’t get the things you recommend. We do have Aldi’s so may have to check out the pizza section.
In Romania where I’m from we don’t have such a high selection I think, the Ristorante one is pretty decent among the option though. Now that I see this vid makes ne want to give some of the others a try for when I’m too busy and don’t have any other option or time to cook. Thanks for the vid, its really interesting to hear your opinion about these mundane ready-made foods, cheers
@@vincenzosplate i was genuinely surprised by how high you ranked them, with some of these i feel like I'm chewing cardboard instead of pizza dough 😂 but in all honesty as a quick 10 min when you have no time its a good option to for a frozen pizza
In the UK theres an expensive brand called Crosta & Mollica. In my opinion the best tasting pizza. I used to live with an italian lady and she approved of that brand saying its pretty close. Dr Oetker Pizzas are super cheap cheap but they fill a gap and taste good. We have Chicago Town which is also good but the tomato sauce is sour which can put a lot of people off. Im a big fan of thin crust. In a wood fired oven it gives that lovely charred bubbles and cruncy airiness and allows the ingredients to cook in enough time without overcooking them.
I've had all of these, the cheese ones are the best ones for sure. We sadly don't have any really great frozen pizzas in Australia with toppings already on it.
I get great reheats on pizza as well it works with frozen pizzas and fish. I cook it in the microwave and then finish it off with a frying pan to set the crust on the bottom. Why the pizza splits? I suggest that they go through a phase where they precook the pizza dough which turns it into a pita bread. Why do that? It seals the dough so the wet ingredients don't soak in and make things soggy. With the centerline on the pizza, I am figuring the final roll out goes into a tray to keep it consistent, but allows it to get a little more rise to improve the flavor of the dough. Improving the flavor the quality of the ingredients, double the cross. Add special things to the process and it will add between 25 to 30% of the cost. You approach that point, then you might as well get a fresh pizza locally. Never disrespected frozen pizza because have to keep it a value for the niche of you need something to eat and don't have a lot of money.

We used to be able to buy ristorante pizzas in Australia for $3.75 at half price on sale...but ever since the recent price increases in Australia the cheapest I have seen is $5-$6 and the supermarkets never seem to do half price frozen pizzas anymore.

Vincenzo saying he used to go for the Canadian brand of pizzas when in his 20s filled me with pride as a Canadian. Then came the taste test. Then the realization that we also invented pineapple on pizzas with the Hawaiian pizza... You know what, our pizza game SUCKS! XD
Also Vincenzo, I know that you hate a lot on peperoni, for it not being italian and not being salami, but did you know that it was actually invented by italians in the US as a way to create a product that was similar to salami, but using ingredients available in the US?
Unfortunately for me, it was a Greek immigrant to Canada that invented Hawaian. And I'm saying "unfortunately" because I'm from Greece. I have no idea what the hell the guy was thinking. He should have stuck to yeeros.
Gonna disagree with you on that pineapple thing. I know it is a weird battle. No other topping including anchovies provokes people so much. I also like figs or pears on pizza when paired properly. I have a thing for pineapple and fresh sliced jalapenos on a pizza. Sweet and spicy.
The brand - Dr. Oetker - is german, btw. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Oetker
it's not a Canadian brand at all, maybe only produced there for Australian market?
yes, the pineapple on pizza debate will forever be a Canadian legacy!
as poor students we eat canned beans, winter veggie stews etc,not frozen food....way cheaper
@@pacoro84 My mom used to cook fresh every single day but also bought frozen emergency foods for us when we were little because she worked long, long hours 7 days a week, and you never know. As a uni student, I mostly ate vegetables, grains, and stews. ;)
I don't eat frozen foods anymore but in my student days, they were much cheaper... I only recently found out (as I always walk past the frozen aisle) that frozen pizza in my country costs between 5 - 8€ a piece nowdays (which is around 5.5 - 9 USD or 8 - 13 AUD), which is just insane!!

Missed opportunity to slip in a real pizza while Vincenzo was blindfolded just to get his reaction
It does affect the recommended cooking time a little one way or the other (i.e. watery things like mushrooms or fresh tomato will slow it down more than just adding a few anchovies or a different type of cheese)
@Vincenzo's Plate it would be interesting see a 'How to pimp up a frozen Margarita' video!
For example, a Dr Oetker (?) mushroom pizza is good with a bit of good blue cheese and a sprinkle of Oregano. Finish with Grana Padano
Or a plain margarita is good with a few anchovies, good tuna, chillies and black olives.
If you get their pepperoni one, add some fresh chilli, quite thinly sliced red bell peppers, and a dab of cream cheese here and there (or something like feta or ricotta)
Consider frying/cooking your mushroom and tomato before you put it on the pizza to eliminate the water.
Of course tomatoes usually go with a pinch of salt ;)
That said, might be worth baking them so the water can evaporate.
Oh, that's sounds great!
Best frozen pizza i ever had is from Crosta & Mollica, they expensive though but worth it.
Really! I should try it!
Thanks for sharing how you eat your favorite frozen pizza, it sounds delicious!
Unfortunately I don’t see any of those pizzas available here in the United States with the exception of the first one. Aldi does not carry those pizzas in the US.
Ah really? I didn't know that 🤷🏽♀️

Yeah, Ristorante is all over Europe, and so is Dr. Oetker.

basically it is no "pizza" neighter italian nor american, but some kind of badly cost-optimized industry product.
No, Ristorante is the worst!

Most if not all Aussie supermarkets who make "FREAH BREAD" actually get bread parbaked frozen in a lined box and finish the baking instore, Coles used to do this and still might however i know for a fact Aldi gets there bread delivered fresh everyday at least in the state of Victoria Australia.
if they would even ferment for decent amout of hours... It is all about speed, get the shit out as fast as possible, who cares for dough maturing...
@@andyking957 oh no it is always proved for a few minutes only.

Yeah, it is interesting to try new things 😊
best to get a ciabatta baguette cut in half and throw some sauce and cheese and oil and peperoni on it to fix yourself a meal instead of those things
Ahahha, great idea!
it's become common for the supermarkets to have refrigerated pizzas as well which are usually better than the frozen ones, maybe you should start a new category and do a comparison of those as well
do not know.
Taste is subjective my friend, but as an Italian and after tasting it, I can never say that Hawaiian pizza is a good one!
It's really subjective, call me weird, but I love organic whole wheat pasta! 😂
I’m from Hawaii- I 1000% endorse no pineapple on Pizza. And no calling Pineapple Pizza Hawaii Pizza please! Mahalo.
I love the Ristorante funghi pizza. Their mozzerella one isn't bad, the rest are hopeless.
I like these tests. Unfortunately we do t have the same brands for all the things you taste test in the US so I usually can’t get the things you recommend. We do have Aldi’s so may have to check out the pizza section.
*Aldi 😊
Yeah, I think you should try it out! Maybe you will like it 😊
In Romania where I’m from we don’t have such a high selection I think, the Ristorante one is pretty decent among the option though. Now that I see this vid makes ne want to give some of the others a try for when I’m too busy and don’t have any other option or time to cook. Thanks for the vid, its really interesting to hear your opinion about these mundane ready-made foods, cheers

Yes, that's true! But Aldi got 6. It is good for a frozen pizza 😊
Nice video! Aldi is always surprising. Question, could you make your own full frozen pizza?
I mean it will be a normal pizza that I will put in freezer 😊 😅🤌🏼
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this video😊

I don´t know any of these frozen Pizzas as they are not available where I am, except the Ristorante, and it is my absolute to go to frozen Pizza. I am a bit shocked about the price you mentioned. Where I live it is less than 2 Euros when it is on sale, which is basically 3 out of 4 weeks a month in average. For this price you get the most bang for your bucks.
Whaaat? Under 2€? Which country do you live in?

you need to do a review on the same thickness of pizza bud... Obvi... if one is thick crust and some are thin and one is sourdough... well.. you get my point.
