If I machine wash (when appropriate) I put the garment in a garment bag and wash on gentle/delicate cycle to minimize contact with any other clothing that might be in the load.
I like to machine dry sweaters (those that are machine wash/dry) till slightly damp, then shape by hand and let dry on a sweater dryer. For hand-wash and dry only, invest in a heavy white towel to help squeeze out excess water before putting on sweater dryer; your sweater will dry in no time.
