    "The episodes were running up to... eight minutes under" This show is everything I love about self-aware British humor. Reminds me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which is very conscious of its own fictitious nature.

      Funnily enough this exact same thing happened with inept Martial arts Movie Twin Dragon Encounter. Also made as a self-promotion vehicle for it's Mary Sue stars The McNamara Twins. Almost all fights are slowed down, but as it was done in post the 24fps they're working with gives jittery as hell results to the point that it's hard to know who hit who. To lengthen the film further, the very same fight scenes are played over the end credits but in normal speed, so finally you can see what's going on.

    Man, this series is a hidden gem even for British TV. They did a "commentary" for the DVD called Horrificata Illuminata, which is essentially Holness, Ayoade and Berry improving in character for 20 mins. It's arguably better than the actual show (it's on youtube in it's entirety)

    There is a third level: the in-character dvd commentary of the entire series done as "Garth, Dean, and Todd" done entirely from the point of view of the characters 10 years after the show aired.

    weirdly enough, the first episode (in broadcast order) of the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya does something similar. showing the entirety of a bad movie the characters made, then showing their reactions in the theater at the end. one of the light novels actually chronicles the making of the movie INSTEAD of showing it, making it a companion piece to that episode

    Hi Patrick,
    Greetings from India. Can we get Cinematic blur in DSLR? I tried but failed.
    Could please shoot in 24fps with 180 degree rule for Shutter Speed. I just want to see the cinematic motion blur. What i mean is Tv Series and movie. i can tell whether i am watching a TV series or a movie. you see that little bit of slow in the movies. So after googling for 4 years now i found that its called cinematic blur. which is there in Big budget cinema camera. No matter how you shoot in DSLR 24 fps 1/48 shutter speed. Fast lens. blurred background , color grading still it will not feel like a movie.
    Please clarify my doubts.

    From a Brit who watched this show when it came out nearly 20 years ago and periodically refound it via late night repeats and rare dvd's, it is so satisfying that americans have found this.
    I love when Americans find niche British stuff and completely get it. This show is still pretty cult even in the UK, so I hope it finds a massive US audience.

    You need to track down the DVD for the in character commentary tracks in which the characters spend the running time drinking beer and variously slandering all the other cast members. It adds a whole third level (following your analysis).

    Not meaning to be that obnoxious hipster or anything, but I’m so glad to see someone touting the brilliance of Darkplace. I watched it in 2004 on channel 4 here in the UK, late on Thursdays (I think..?). So, so good, and it’s stood the test of time.
    It was a cult hit that went mostly unnoticed even here, until around 2007 ish when it was released on dvd. And even then, it’s not got that wide an audience.
    If you haven’t already, make sure to check out ‘Man to Man with Dean Learner’. Made by same people, with Garth as a cameo in one episode.

    • @lectorintellegat
      @lectorintellegat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      (Also - if you haven’t already, make sure you watch the DVD extras to darkplace. You’re right to say that the modern context makes this show brilliant. Precisely because that’s true, you need to watch the 40+ minutes of modern context interviews, all extra to what you’ve seen in the show. All fantastic.)

    This went totally under the radar in the UK. I remember at the time being amazed it wasn't nominated for a comedy award. Absolutely one of my favourite shows with so many quotable lines. 'Don't drink that, look it's bright green' being just one of many favourites.
    As somebody else has mentioned, well worth getting the dvd because the audio commentaries are all done in character and add another layer to the comedy.
