  • The Pixel 3a which was unveiled during Google I/O 2019 may be one of the best smartphones of 2019. It may not have the best specs or a huge set of features but after unboxing it and going hands on, its price may be the winner. While this isn't a full long term review yet, since we spent over two straight months with its predecessor, lets do a quick Pixel 3a vs Pixel 3 comparison. The two may be closer in performance than you may think.

    They removed every feature I don't care about, improved the back (no glass, yay), and brought back a headphone jack. This may be my next phone. I own a Pixel gen 1.

      I don't even understand why people prefer the more fragile glass back compared to getting sturdier plastic. If they want it for the wireless charging, ok I get that. But if they like it just for the aesthetics? Not very practical.

      @@alpineassault which people prefer it? Do consumers actually prefer it? Or is it just the marketing and design people that are collectively convinced glass is the way to go?
      I personally loved my HTC one X, that was plastic done RIGHT! Since then I've had a metal HTC phone which I already felt was a step back and then glass phones... Not because I wanted that, but because that was all that was available and ticking all other boxes I wanted. Plastic is mostly only used on budget devices, there is no real choice when you do want a high-end phone...
      To add to that, I currently have a galaxy S9+ and I mostly love it, but I have a slim plastic cover that kind of wraps around the back and sides of it to protect it. It's the first phone I've had that I have had something of a case around pretty much since getting it. The glass back is completely lost to me, it would have been better if the material the case is made of would simply have been used for the back of the device...
      Oh and by the way, wireless charging works fine with plastic (works through my case), it's metal that interferes with that.

    I've sold phones for years. There is 2 questions people ask, how much is it? And how is the camera? I haven't had someone ask about the processor since like 2014. Headphone jack is a very big plus too.

      I would think the third question would be, "How is the battery life?" Those seem to be the most important factors.

    • @Dia1Up
      @Dia1Up 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@bizmonkey007 It is an important factor, however it really is not a question people ask. They instead ask of it's true that batteries wear out, or is it "planned obsolescence". Most will plug their phone in overnight whether it needs charging or not, and most phones last until then and much more anyways. If you look at the spread modern phones. It's not the big things people care about. (Other then the things I mentioned) It's the small things they have to live with for their phone contract. Like my gesture control on my p20's touch pad, or a headphone jack, or notification light. The things that most reviewers gap over because they are subjective or "unimportant". Most reviewers I know of aren't on the front lines with real customers, they are instead more in touch with the passionate community of followers. And they have to cater to the people who will be searching for reviews. I see 25-50 people a day, it's surprising how consistent the points they bring up are, and how hey differ from the points reviewers or tech enthusiasts bring up.

      Front facing speakers, wide angle selfie camera, glass back versus plastic. Worse front screen Dragon Tail versus Corning Glass.
      This device is for the budget minded and those who can't afford more than 20$/Mo for a device. Other than that the Pixel 3A is good device.

    • @oerthling
      @oerthling 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@cleysoptique8749 Many consider plastic vs glass a *plus*. I do.
      The speakers are fine. Almost nobody is going to worry about the exact placing at all.
      Not everybody is worried about the front camera.
      Most people will never even consider they type of glass. If this model becomes especially known for broken screens - then it will mater - otherwise not at all.
      Most people don't really consider the specs. Does it look and feel nice might be a concern. Battery life and "does it work smoothly" (no obvious stuttering) surely is.
      And most people are budget minded.
      Why spend hundreds of wasted dollars for spec bragging rights few people care about and glass backs that will never be seen below a case? That's just throwing a lot of money out the window.

    • @cleysoptique8749
      @cleysoptique8749 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oerthling see that's the thing i'm a minority to this. I'ts not bragging rights for me, its using all of the potential of a device. otherwise i would just buy a 300-600 phone.
      Obviously you have the normal things like battery life, but the screen plays a big part. do you want to look at washed out content or do you want really crisp visuals, cinematic -esque. And for that you'll end up paying more of a premium. plastic doesn't feel nice to the touch as glass does. i had a Moto Z2Force and it didn't feel that great to look at or slide my fingers across. because of the plastic design. glass is simply smoother.
      The speakers to me, if i hold my phone in landscape mode and watch videos my right hand tends to muffle the sound due to the placement of the speaker. a lot of phones have this issue. But Front facing speaker phones do not., and tend to sound better because both speakers are bigger usually and better drivers. UnboxTherapy has done videos showing this like comparing various phones. You can hear the difference its not a lot, but it does change the way things sound.
      The camera is a big selling point in this day and age otherwise we wouldn't have phones with 3+ sensors on them. i love taking pictures with the front facing camera with my family. i also want options like zoom capabilities to get a picture i normally couldn't because i'm far away from the subject.
      These things do matter to a lot of people, but for those who don't care that's also fine and that's why this phone isn't 700+.

      @@cleysoptique8749 every smartphone will lose its value. Smartphones lose their value faster than any other type of tech. So why spend over 500 dollars when you could get a cheaper phone that's as good as the 3a but won't lose as much value?

    • @cleysoptique8749
      @cleysoptique8749 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@colternewkirk6163 obviously you did not read one of my earlier reply. To another person. If you apply that same logic then take this for instance people don't buy a Honda civic to get the best handling that they can experience. They buy a Porsche Cayman as it's the best bang for buck on top of the best handling in its class. There's a reason why people say, it doesn't handle like a Porsche. for somebody that doesn't give a damn about all those extra things and is more of a point A to point b type of person then they're going to buy this device which is fine but for me personally I want to experience something that's far better and if I have to put up a little extra dough then by all means. There's a reason why Mercedes AMG and the BMW M series are known for best performance in their classes. but yeah after 5 years they'd appreciate a lot so who cares, that just means that second owner gets a hell of a discount 😂 it's the same mentality that most people have they rather wait a couple years after a product, out that way they can get it at a steal price

    Since Google's heading in the right direction with Pixel 3a, they might knock it out of the park with Pixel 4 this fall. Google's critical shortcomings against Apple's is hardware performance/optimization (partly due to lack of in-house SoC), cross-platform sync (iMessage), and battery life. I hope Google's hardware department pushes hard this year.

      As a former Apple user, I still have no idea why people care so much about iMessage. I've seen enough comments about it that I've kind of accepted it, but after 3 years of iOS my impressions of iMessage were just that it was ugly and unreliable. It loved to tell me messages had failed when they had actually sent and vice versa. It also prevented me from getting texts for months after I switched to Android because it kept trying to send them to my nonexistent iPhone... Do iPhone users all own a Macbook and get really pumped about texting on their computer? I just don't get it.

    I'm still rocking my Note 5 I picked up 5 years ago, used to be the guy who upgraded every 2 years to a flagship but realized I was just caught up in the who marketing pitch you get bombarded with to upgrade. My Note 5 still works good, I never sit there thinking its slow or lagging and the camera still takes great pics. That being said its running Android 7 and I think its time to move on. The Pixel 3a XL is built for me all I care about is a great camera, good screen, good battery and OS updates. Looking forward to getting my fist new phone in 5 years WOOT. Thanks for the vid.

    I came here to see what the 3a offers because I found a 3a for sale in an online website in my country. The price is around $235 USD (used /mint condition) though I missed a Pixel 4 that was selling for $340 USD (1 month old / MINT). of course these are not the daily prices that you'd expect to find everyday but it's some of the greatest opportunities that comes once in a while!. ANYWAY, THANKS FOR THE REVIEW!

    Coming from no phone at all due to last one finally giving out, this phone is a killer deal at the right time. B&H probably has the best deal. $100 gift card, plus 3 months prepaid unlimited plan. That technically puts the Pixel in the $240 range. I was originally going to buy some stuff that B&H has anyways, so that $100 gift card is $100 I would have spent regardless. The Nokia 7.1 which can be found for $299 might actually be a better deal than the pixel 3A as the screen is better it has SD card support in the build quality is better. then again if you go to the Google store and trade in an old iPhone you can get the pixel 3 a pretty cheap so anyway just saying there is another manufacturer that is supplying good value phones with fast updates.

    "Flagship phones aren't selling as well as expected" I wonder if it has anything to do with the now $1k+ price tags(come on, this is something that has been climbing well beyond any inflation), or removal of headphone jacks and addition of the notch...or any other thing these companies seem to think of as a wonderful idea, but the majority of the public either didn't want or didn't care for.Yes to each their own, some might enjoy or not be bothered by some of these things, but really, a "chin" on your phone isn't that damn horrible, it can store a front facing speaker(s), keep you from accidentally activating the on screen buttons in landscape, etc.
