Interesting.. for many years while living in Hawaii, Fuji Superia Reala 100 was my film of choice. I used the faster Fuji films (and Kodak) on occasion, but could never find any film that could “beat” my beloved Superia Reala. I suppose each photographer has a favorite stock. It’s a shame that almost all of our favorites have been discontinued.

Concur. I also liked Reala the handful of times that I used it.

Oh yeah, Reala was special, unsurpassed details and sharpness. My all time second favourite colour negative film. Wish, it wasn't discontinued😢

Agfa Optima 125, mainly because of colour. It had vivid colors and yet nice Skin tones with that typical for Agfa little yellowish hue. I bet it had a short life in production though.
Agfa manufactured some great film stock and it was little that less expensive than Kodak.

5:04 The verbiage used to describe the 2017 Fuji Superia X-Tra 400 and the currently-sold "Fuji 400" is important. Whomever you heard say "Superia is just renamed Kodak Ultramax" used the wrong name. So when you show the graph on the left for Superia X-Tra 400, while correct for what it is, is incorrect in what people are typically implying. I believe what people are trying to say is that Fuji 400 (not Fuji Superia X-Tra 400) is similar to Kodak Ultramax 400. And if you pull up the graph from Fujifilm for the "new" Fuji 400 (not shown in this video), it will look decently identical to Kodak Ultramax 400. Particularly the spectral sensitivity of the red-layer and how it matches the relative sensitivity of the green-layer. Japanese made Superia X-Tra 400 always show a lower red-layer sensitivity compared to the green-layer. Also of note that Fuji 400 (again, not Superia X-Tra 400) spectral dye density curve closely follows Ultramax 400's spectral dye density curve. PS. of note, i think but cannot confirm, that Fujifilm removed the cyan-layer at some point in the early 2010's but did not rename the stock.

    Great film stock!
Cannot say for the most recent Fujifilm offerings if it is rebadged Kodak, but at least the last ones from from 2019 I exposed is definitely not Kodak, cause I highly favoured Superia 400 to Ultranax. Noticebly finer grain and sharper image. If I photographed people I usually overexposed by one stop to clean up the skin tones from pinkish tint. It was also a great film stock in 120 format and to me also surpasing modern Gold 200 in larger negatives. Great film for photographing nature with its signature green color.
Sadly it is gone, like Superia 100, Reala, 400H Pro and many others.

I know a lot of photographers turned their nose up at this inexpensive film stock, but I loved it, and am sad it’s gone. Very shootable, affordable, and pleasant colors, particularly the reds and greens. Was very disappointed to see Fuji replace it with rebranded Kodak stock, everything is becoming so homogenized.

Yeah, it's kind of a bummer each time they're a bit less diversity in film stocks.

Dear David, thanks again for one more film series video. It's very nice to see those warmly passionate works of Yours. It's even more nice to see that despite You do now "film or whatever unboxing" kind of work (I think You understand the meaning) You still keep up with more quality content what most people truly enjoy on Your channel (at least I do :). So, thanks a lot, and will be waiting for next Film/round glass/coffee series videos, cheers!

Thank you! I understand exactly what you mean. If it weren't for how many views the short-form videos get, I'd never do them. I like the in-depth analyses, too, even when other people do them. I do think you'll really like what the All About Film videos have in store for the next 15-ish months, at least. :D

It produced balanced results under fluorescent lighting if 30/1 or lower shutter was used. Very impressive film, I always favoured it. There's a company called Poly Film Labs in the UK who have bulk rolls of it for sale, manufactured around 2016. It's called surveillance film, possibly designed for speed cameras.

So true. The Superia 400 and also C200 that I've been using in the last few years was defintely not the same that I used to use in the 90s.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Part of it could be down to improved materials design, improved manufacturing, or materials changes due to cost, availability, or material environmental regulations, but at minimum, it does perform differently.

Nice ! Fuji Superia 400 is one of my favorite C-41 films along with Kodak Ektar-100... Also I liked Superia 200 when it was produced - in 200 iso and how it looked pushed to 800iso)

Babe wake up, David Hancock just dropped the new Spectral Sensitivity charts..
So ya I'm actually shooting my last few rolls of original formula Japan market Superia Xtra. Even though Premium is clearly a better film if even my a small margin, it's still nice to have xtra with it's unique look. I am also finishing up my stock of Fujicolor 100.
By next year I will be shooting Kodak exclusively.
Kinda sad as I want to support Fujifilm but even in Japan Fujifilm is actually more expensive than Kodak. Mind blown right? It might even be cheaper for me to import the fake Fuji from walmarts in the U.S then to shoot real Japan domestic Superia Premium.
Anyways keep up the good work.

Yeah, you know you can also buy "Fuji" and other films off AliExpress. I'm honestly not sure why Kodak and Ilford films are being sold straight from China.

There is no official information about Fuji having discontinued this film. Certain youtubers claim they know this, but no information confirming discontinuation of the last negative film Fuji still claims to be manufactured cannot be confirmed from reliable sources. The fact Fuji sells some Kodak films under their brand in the US is not relevant for the whole world, which is not the same as the United States of America.

@@b6983832 Many retailers have it listed as discontinued and the new fuji 400 made in the USA replaces the superia According to articles I read.

    • @DavidHancock

@@b6983832 That's a fair point and I did a whole Cameras & Coffee video on the subject that essentially agrees with you (though that video predated the new Made in US stocks.) I do think there's some good reason to be leery of the discontinuation reports, though that said, B&H now lists X-tra as "no longer available" (which typically means that the product is discontinued.)
Could Fuji be making their own stock for the Japan domestic market? Always possible and if it turns out that they are and if it is different than X-tra, I could see myself ordering some from Japan and making a video on it.
