We have a used 318 that we have had for 5 years. The tractor itself is in great condition. About a week ago i went to start it to move it out of the way. When it started it made a a bad knock so I immediately shut it off. So we thought it had carbon on the piston so we tried cleaning it by putting a little water through the air filter hole. After we tried that, it blew up.
mmrbeef believe it or not, the gears that conect to the valves and all that are rounded. Pistons and conecting rods are fine. Although one side didn't have compression because of it.
H B you have to take the fender pan off (4 bolts) and go in from the top and it’s right in front of the gas tank or go from underneath but you may have a belly screen and that has a lot more bolts to take off but if not you could probabaly do it from underneath but easier to do it the first way
@@haydenschneider3 Yes I did find drive shaft grease fittings thank you. It was a pain. I came in from the bottom it was easier that way to get the right angle. The grease fitting on shaft grease one side of the yoke . So I just smeared some grease with my finger on the other side.
Great video. My question is, when your 318i will not start and it needs to be pushed into the shop how do you unlock the rear wheels so that they roll freely?
Went and looked up normal oil use.... For the P220 and P218 Onan normal oil use would be 15-20 hours to go from "full" to "add" on the dipstick. Excessive is anything less than 8 hours. On a 322 or 332 with the Yanmar engines it is 30-35 hours for normal use.
My Onan had a small oil leak but I fixed it with a new low oil pressure sensor. Still seeing some spots on the floor but I'm hoping it's just the excess oil that was sitting in the frame leaking out.
I really enjoy your videos and love my 1987 JD 318. Could you tell me how you move the drive shaft into position where the grease fittings are facing down? Cranking with spark plugs in, ends up always with up position and are inaccessible. Thanks
Have a 318, circa 1988, and just replaced the hydrostatic steering assembly. . The steering works fine, doesn't leak, and the only problem that has arisen is now the mower deck won't lift. Engine, drive assembly work fine. but the deck doesn't react when the lift lever is employed. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much for this video. I am going on Saturday to look at my 1st potential 318 purchase. I already know that it has a flyball spacer issue based on your videos. 670 hours, one owner comes with new tires front and rear, and a 4 way plow with wheel weights. Is $1000 a decent price? Thanks again!
When you mow, do you have to slow down and speed up using the hand lever, or can you use the break to slow down for turning corners and going around trees.
The brake is connected to the hand lever so if you press the brake the hand lever will move. Typically you should only need to use the hand lever to increase or decrease your speed or come to a stop. The only time I use the brakes on these machines is if I am using them to turn while blowing snow or doing dirt work.
really enjoy and appreciate your videos, you have a great collection. I started collecting in 9/16 and have 9 tractors from a 110 R F up to two 318's and I'm gonna have to paint them all, I like this shade on your 318 I bought J D AG & turf but seems almost neon what are you using?
I know this is an old video. But I am looking at getting a 318. How difficult is it to find engines or engine parts for these as well as other miscellaneous parts?
Generally the parts for these machines are plentiful. However, the worst thing you can do is to buy one and throw a lot of money in parts at it. Take time to evaluate what you need and gather info, then shop. Deere has many of the consumable parts, mower parts can be had on FB and eBay, engine parts can be sourced from BoomersOnan, OnanParts.com, or eBay (even your local Cummins dealer if they feel like it). They are great machines to work with and on. Good luck on your search.
@@mmrbeef thank you Sir so much for the time to reply. I've been doing a lot of research and watching all your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them. Super helpful for a guy like me who's never owned or driven one before but finds himself needing one now...
Hi I noticed on your 318 seat it has a different suspension under it than the normal u shaped arms. Is that a JD option and is it a better suspension for heavy people? I am looking for another 318 to buy and would love to have yours. This time I do not care about it having a mowers deck for it.
Yes, there was a "Deluxe Seat Suspension" offered as an option on the 318, 322, 332, and 420. It was standard on the 430. The seat that I have is actually a really well made aftermarket seat (that sadly is not made any more). It is similar to the OEM type. The suspension seats are amazing. If you are buying used though make sure it is not worn out!
Sure, the 4 port power steering was int he early units (318 and 420). In those units the SCV valve received fluid before the steering column. This meant that when lifting an attachment there was a chance you would have no steering. The 5 port valve fixed that by prioritizing the steering valve over the SCV valve.
That is a difficult question. There are so many variables. Type of machine, year of machines, model etc etc. If you are looking to buy a mower I would suggest joining on online forum like www.mytractorforum.com/ to ask the members questions. If you need help joining drop me an email or leave a reply here. Lots of good folks there willing to help out and answer questions.
so you are using the J D brand name paint for your tractors and are satisfied with the end results? I just sprayed a small area on the side of the tower to get a look on a 317 with the Brantley power steering that I'm putting an Onan engine from a 420 in, hope it all goes together
I'm looking at both a 318 and a 322. My yard is half an acre. Which machine do you feel in your opinion is better? The 322 has 750 hours and the 318 has 900 hours. Both are pretty nice. I'm just curious your opinion. Your videos are great!
Thanks for the comments! If they are both nice looking units I think it would depend on price. The 322 will be the quieter running unit (they run like sewing machines!). Both engines should be good to go for at least another 400-500 hours if not much longer depending on care. Without any information at all, I would say if the 322 is within $250 of the 318 I would give it a hard look.
Hey I just put a set of these v61 tires on the 322 I just got, what PSI do you run or recommend for them? Love the R F video series gonna see if ya posted any I haven't seen yet.thanks
I really like the V61's. Back when I was moving snow with the 318 they worked really well. Now the 318 has a life of leisure so tires are not a huge concern anymore. PSI wise for some reason 8 or 10 sticks in my head. I have not posted an update to the RF series in a couple weeks. I have some footage but nothing worth making a video about. Right now I am mostly down to collecting some pictures for the next installment.
What are your thoughts on the early 90's model 318? I hear they don't have the flyball spacer issue. Are those models dependable and reputable? I'm looking at one with about 1100 hours.
Sometime in 1990 (I think) there was a tab added to the flyball spacer that prohibited it from rotating on the cam gear so those units don't have the issue of the mid-1985 to 1989/90 units. I am unsure of the serial numbers of the exact dates for those units.
The 318 has belt powered snow blowers. The most common snow blower for the 318 is the Model 49 Snow Thrower it is a single stage unit. The two stage unit for the 318's is a 47 blower. However, there are several model 47 blowers so it is important to pay attention and get the correct unit for a 318. I hope that helps.
Any time dust, dirt, debris get in an engine they will cause a significant amount of wear very quickly. The dusting term comes from dust getting in an engine and acting like sand paper.
Other than the engine being replaced (I swapped a the original P218 for a rebuilt P220... wish I had the original engine back now) it is all original. I have the original invoice from the first owner that purchased it new in April of 1988.
I'm watching this because i just found an old fella selling a minty barn kept 1982 318 with 4 way hydraulic snowplow, hydraulic snowblower, wheel weights and the 50" mower deck. The clock says 645 hours and he wants $2200 for it. He said he'll hold it for me if i want it. Is that a good deal?
I’d double check the serial number. The first mode year was a 1983. Maybe the gentleman bought it in late 1982? With the blade, thrower, and 50” deck it doesn’t sounds like a terrible deal, if it runs out well. Mechanical condition is key
@@mmrbeef Yeah my 210 and 316k don't. Just scored a mint condition 318 yesterday. I'm stoked, been looking for one for a couple years, but they're usually either clapped out or someone thinks they're selling a Ferrari and pricing accordingly.

I switched to 15w-40 T6 Syn Rotella. Alot of people use it on these motors, but definitely cut back big time on oil consumption.
5W-40 T6 is great for dying EJ25s too! 🤣

Good luck, the flyball issue is reasonably easy to fix. With that description the price doesn’t sound bad.
got any suggestions on where to get the ribbed front tires?
What does the valve do on the rear cylinder? does it need to be open for the deck to operate? Do you have to close it to use a blade?
In this case the valve "locks" the cylinder out of the system and directs all the fluid to the front hydraulic outlets.

Ag and Turf is the correct green to use. It could be the lighting in the video. The classic green is for the two-cylinder tractors in the 20's-50's.
Could be your primer, try rustoleum Self Etching Primer. It’s almost army green but amazing primer.

I never knew that with the Onan engines it's normal for them to burn oil. I guess that's to be expected with the style of engine it has though
My 318 does the same thing, I always need to add a tiny bit of oil.
