    Interesting watching this. I was the product manager on the Onan P218 and P220 engines and have some background for you. The B43G engine had a very flat torque curve that caused bog down in heavy grass. I convinced Onan to up the displacement on the P218 to 48ci. We put in the cam from the 1800 RPM RV generator engine and a smaller carb to hold peak power down to 18. The 18 has virtually the same peak torque as the 20 and IMO was the nicer engine. Deere pushed us to the electronic ignition. Glad to hear after all these years that it worked well. The system was borrowed from a unit that retrofitted points in auto engines. The solenoid shift starter was in response to non-engagement when the bendix drive grease hardened or was depleted by grass clippings. It was first used on the B series engines. The oil pan mounted starter had issues with gear lash tolerances that could cause tooth-to-tooth lockup so we went to the block mounted starter. A hiccup with that design was poor computer modeling of the stresses and fatigue cracking of the bosses on the block due to starter engagement. As a temporary fix we installed a cam shaped washer at the rear of the starter to help support it until we beefed up the bosses on the block. So if you have an engine with the cam washer (only a very few 1986 ones) don’t remove it😊

    I have learned so much from your channel and greatly value your knowledge. I bought a used 1992 318 in 2019. It came with a 52” blade, a trailer and the vacuum bagger. I found your channel then and have referred to it several times. I did a thorough clean up on my tractor when I got it, changed fluids, filters, hoses, plugs and belts and last year during COVID I had a lot of time on my hands so I pulled the deck, wire wheeled the underside and applied POR15 then painted the top side. It still looks new. I’ve had grew up using my Dad’s 1972 12 horse Simplicity Sovereign and have had 2 Craftsman (cough) lawn tractors. This 318 is by far the best machine I’ve used. I’m going to keep it forever. Thanks for your passion on these tractors and keep up the great videos!

    Thanks for posting an excellent roll-up of the subtle design & equipment changes. Was a mechanic for JD "consumer products" (e.g., mowers, snowmobiles, l&g equipment, etc.) in late 70s/early 80s and left just as the 317 engine recall began. Finally picked up an '86 318 about two months ago. Am arming myself for what will surely become a bit of repair/preventive maintenance, after which it will become my primary workhorse (and likely outlast me).

    What a great and informative video! You touched upon a lot of really good points here and I don't think people realize just how many small differences/changes were made over the course of the 318's production. In fact, I don't think two years of the 318 were identical - every new model year had some kind of revision over the previous.

    Very informative, have learned a lot of valuable information from your videos over the years. Currently have a '79 317 (with Series II upgrade), an '83 and '86 318, and a '97 445, all have been great tractors. Was looking for information on change from 4-port to 5-port steering, which you talked about, much appreciated. If this helps, my '86 318 has the solenoid starter that is mounted to the oil pan - it's SN 372700. I've heard there were around 5000 made in mid to late 1986 with this setup. One interesting thing I discovered with 318s was that 1983 was the only year with oil drain in bottom of pan, instead of side port, which confused the local dealer when looking up the gasket. The location makes changing oil a pain. Thanks again for all of the helpful information!

    My neighbor growing up had a JD mower, and he would snowblow our driveway and till our garden and I always wondered what model it was and im fairly sure it was a 318, great video!!

    I might have made a mention of this in one of my past comments, but as far as I know, there were 4 different starters compatible with these engines. I installed a B43E oil pan on my P218G in my '87 318, but did not want to relocate the solenoid, so I decided to stay with the solenoid-shift type starter and had to find the correct one to attach to a B43G oil pan. This was fairly difficult since they were only used for about a year, but I did manage to get a hold of one.
    On the early '86 year (363XXX serial range) 318 that my uncle bought new, it has the factory hole in the frame for a solenoid-shift starter, but has always had the bendix-style from the factory (which makes sense as it was made before the change at 364138). I'm guessing Deere was planning to switch to the solenoid-shift starter at the beginning of '86, but had to use up the remaining bendix starters before switching over entirely.
    The other uncommon starter is the bendix-style for the P series. These were used on the replacement Onan and Linamar engines which went into the 317's, and earlier 316/318/420's that had worn-out B series engines - the starter and wiring had to be kept consistent.
    One other point I thought I'd mention about the frames - the serial number breaks do not show it, but there was a 6th version. The very early ones did not have the large holes drilled on the sides of the engine cradle for the oil drain valve access (they only had a bottom drain plug until switching to a different oil pan and dipstick at 295072). A friend of mine had a very early '83 318 and 420 (both within the first 2000-3000 made) and neither one had these holes on either side of the frame. I believe the horizontal "flanges" at the back of the frame rails (where the axle tubes bolt up) were longer as well. Also, the power steering cylinders were both attached 90° from the usual location (welded mounts on frame were in the same location, but the hose fittings were in different spots on the cylinder), which was strange. And they only had two holes drilled in the hitch plate instead of three.

      There were a couple weird short run items that don't show up in the parts books that for sure. I ran into that same issue with a starter on that B43G I rebuild many years ago now. I'm not sure if I even did a video on it figuring it was just something that happened. I would suspect the same thing about the '86 frame holes. Made the frame change before they ran out of starters and wiring harnesses. Frames are really interesting, I wish I had some of the really early frames I have junked over the years. When you start looking at them there are lots of tiny changes, even in the welding methods. Great discussion points!

    Thanks for the great info. I have a 1989 JD 318 that cycles, revving up and down. I have narrowed my problem down to excessive blow by that causes oil to pool in air filter housing. HAVE YOU OR ANYONE EVER ADDED AN air oil separator TO THE CRANK CASE BREATHER? I would do this in hopes to "fix" the problem of oil in the air filter housing, without having to rebuild the engine. I would greatly appreciate your input on whether or not this would help.

    Hello, A friend of mine has a 318 but has no computer so I am trying to help him with a repair. Would you happen to know if there is a video that covers the 318 steering valve seal kit installation? Thanks so much.

    Love this video. New owner of a 1984 with the b43g. My dad had a 316 new growing up. Always wanted one of these. Love your channel and I plan on using it should I need to rebuild the onan. I might be an idiot but I want nothing to do with a repower. I’ll pay for the parts or a reman engine even if it’s cost prohibitive.

    Not sure if you mentioned, but in 1989 the brake switch was added. Pedals had to be pressed to start the tractor.

      @mmrbeef  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point. I did not mention it in the video. A lot of wiring changes were very minor and many of them had random serial number breaks. So I opted not to cover the wiring changes. Things like the change from tube fuses to blade fuses that occurred at 420906. The brake switch was added at serial number 600305, yet the 1989 model year started at 595001.

    I am considering getting my first garden tractor. I found a 1984 318 for $1200.
    1370 hours,
    18HP Onan B43G, engine was overhauled 2 years ago
    46” hydraulic lift deck, new spindle bearings winter 2020. Extra deck belt included
    Hydraulic power steering, and 2 front PTOs for a blade or snow blower
    New front tires winter 2021
    Does that seem reasonable? I know there is a lot to it but just did not know if there is a down side to getting a 1984 as opposed to one a little newer with the same number of hours. Thanks for the feedback and love the channel

      good price. check compression before you buy. body panels? Consider repower. about 2g and easy to do and will keep it running forever.

    Do you recommend cat 1 or cat 0 3 points on a 318/332 setup?

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Size wise Cat 0 is better but harder to find. Fitting Cat 1 attachments can be done but the lift height is limited so a lot of implements will drag the ground

    Nice break down ! Maybe you could put a list of serial numbers in the description of when things changed? So if I cut a hole in the frame would a solenoid starter bolt up to a Hendrix style engine? Too remove the Starter do you have to Lift the engine?

      A write up is coming. I hand wrote almost 10 pages of notes for this video as I did the research. I have started typing them up to put on the website. It is going to take me a while to get it all typed up!
      There are a couple considerations to swapping engines between the two models. One of those is the starter mounting. The oil pans pictured in the video are being held for a future video for just that reason. I just need to find the time to make the video.

      Something I did not get into was spec series of the later P218’s they started at A and ended production after J (I think either K or L). I might have to see if I can assemble all that information.
