This is a great pattern and walkthrough to understand joining panels for pouches. When I first started (and even now) I found doing anything gusseted EXTREMELY difficult. This takes some of the complexity out of it. Ended up lining the back panel with loop velcro to put magazine/ifak inserts in as a sort of tactical fanny.
Great update, makes it much easier to follow than the original video especially given this is more of an "entry-level" pattern than your paid ones, which makes it great to build confidence and skill.
I just downloaded your pattern and instructions. WOW these are some of the best instructions I have seen. I'm an early learner so detailed instuctions are very much required and appriciated. Thank you so much! So impressed I just went and bought your Shoulder Zip Pocket pattern set. Looks like a cool little pouch.
If I want to use a patterned cotton for the front panel, do I just cut out the front panel in the cotton fabric, replacing Fabric A? Or do I use both fabrics on top of each other for the front panel? I can't wait to make this! Thanks for the free pattern
It’s up to you for the fabric you’re using. Quilting cotton likely is very thin and won’t have much structure so interfacing or doubling up may work well. If patterned canvas then one layer is probably fine. Try it and see what works best.
My brother asked me to make him and his buddies one of these and a matching one for his 1 year old daughter. Do you have an idea on how much I should scale down the pattern when printing for a toddler? Also, I am sew excited I found your patterns!!!
hey there, not really sure how to advise on sizing for a toddler. Scaling down the pattern via the print scale may work for you. If you set the printer to 67% scale, the seam allowance will be 1/4" instead of 3/8" and the pack will be much smaller.
I’ve made 5 so far. Every time watching this video and each one getting better. Do you ever use your Brother 1034 serger in the seem edges on projects like these?
Nice to hear. Keep it up! I typically add binding on raw edges for bags as its more durable than serging. But I have have a machine set up for edge binding making it fast and much easier than doing by hand. Serging is a good option but its easy to snag and rip the serged threads making it less ideal than binding.
YKK #5 zipper, 1/4”. Math for perfect panel size after inserting a zipper : (total zipper width - teeth width ) / 4. Or just align the tape to your raw edge, and sew exactly in the middle of zipper tape. Fold against the stitch line and then top stitch flat. If needed, trim resulting panel to match the pattern.
It was awesome, I think I can modify a little to make it like AER waist packs (for reference just) Btw can you do a style like bellroy ones which can be expanded during need?! Or any expandable design which can hold a mirrorless camera when needed, and then can be compressed during regular life usage?
Pattern Needed: Hip Belt Pockets with wide loops to go over the padded part of a hip belt. NOBODY makes these large enough, so they cannot be bought, at any price, AFAIK. 1-2 liters are the largest I see, anywhere. What we need is something similar to a fanny pack, but with loops instead of a belt. Ideally 2-5 liters.
It’s unlined and you should seam bind with tape or grosgrain. It’s mainly for aesthetics if using the recommended pack fabrics which do not fray. My audience back then were far more concerned with lightweight gear with technical fabrics preferring binding over linings. If that’s not your focus, there are many other options for similar bags such as the popular Fennel Fanny Pack
@LearnMYOG what I love abt yr tutorial is yr stripped-down, straightforward explanations, very easy to absorb. I didn't realize til the end there were raw edges..so thx for affirming binding might be needed...

Wish you were around 10 years ago when I started sewing. Would have taken out a lot of the mystery. Nice video!
That’s nice to hear. Thanks!

Yes! The original video just didn’t do the pattern justice and left many confused. Hoping this new video helps others get started and enjoy MYOG.
Thanks for taking the time to put this all together. I’m sure it wasn’t easy but it’s much appreciated.

Thanks glad to hear it! Worked hard to improve the instructions a few months ago so happy to hear your positive feedback.
Great pattern! I made two hip bags for myself. There are endless possibilities to customize the inner!
Awesome glad to hear you like. Ya I want to make one specific to tenkara fishing soon!
Thank you for this pattern and video. I want to learn to make my own gear and I think I’ll start with this.
That sounds like a great idea
Thanks for this! I’ve used it 2x now!

Appreciate the kind words. Look forward to seeing your version.
Thanks!!! Going to make one with recycled Nylon Ripstop from a paraglider! :D
Nice! I’m jealous of everyone finding cool sources for reuse like parachutes

謝謝你~~thank you
Thanks for the pattern and video! What seam allowance does the pattern use for attaching the zippers?

What is the brown/tan fabric? Almost looks like Cordura?
500d Cordura
no interfacing?

@@billb5732 can sew loops to the back panel and skip the belt
@@LearnMYOG I'll bet that was obvious -- to you... 🙂
can you sew this with JUKI beginner model?
I assume you can. If you're a beginner, then your machine is likely not your limiting factor. Give a try and start practicing to get better!
Can’t find the pattern
I think I need a little more instructions on how to do the belt
I am stuck on how to cut the pattern pieces for the gussets. I feel you skipped steps.
The video accompanies the pattern instructions and there’s an additional video linked detailing the zipper install.
Thank you. I found it and used it
Where you buy the paper pattern ?
So, then, no lining, all the hems and stitching show on the inside? I see you posted this 2 yrs ago, so no expectation of being answered...
