- Wednesday marks the grand opening of a new homeless housing tower in downtown Los Angeles‘ Skid Row that is drawing praise for its ambition while taking flack for its price tag.

Sounds lilke some friends of politicians made a lot of money on the project.
Exactly! Follow the money to find out the truth!
Why would Maxine be there? Likely because she's the one getting something out if it.
AUDIT !!!
@jason-ow8cq AUDIT!!!
1000% (Quote the project higher than what it actually cost. Grab some money, I'll sell you a painting. Give me some of that money. We both win...)
How does eash unit cost more than the average cost of the US home. Sounds like a scam out of tax dollars. the math is not mathing for me!!!
Our course it is a scam.
Los angeles run down in dangerous hood goes for 1 million$
It's in LA. The average home in LA goes for twice that much.
Because it’s BRAND NEW and they decide to give the homeless people in Skidrow BRAND NEW Units
@@AntiMasonic93👍🏼
This place is going to get trashed within days.
100%
Like the Sixth Street Bridge, which is currently dark because someone stole the wires.
There will be alohol and substance abuse, fights, the police will be there day and night. Drug dealers will be outside all hours of the day and night. Fights will be a common occurence.
another graffiti tower
TTTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAAAArashed!!!!!!!!
gooood luck keeping this building CLEAN
Yeah. That's one issue that will arise later. I lived in DTLA and the landlord that came in after a property management company change told me he came from transitional apartments like these, and many previous 'houseless' would not leave the squalor they lived in streets with and recreated homeless like environments IN nice new income restricted government apartments. I couldn't believe it but he was adamant about what he had experienced. 'Pigeons?!?! Nooo...' 'yes, I'm serious' 'get out of here!'.
@@Modernaire They will probably make taxpayers pay for the upkeep.
Many street homeless die alone quietly abandoned by everybody. What's even more sad is their bodies get eaten by other homeless and stray animals and simply disappear.
How far can hot urine smell travel up the tower during summer time?
Drug use tower.
tower to the people. and pee poo.
$590k per homeless… a wise use of tax payer money? Half of the hard working americans cannot afford buy a house that costs half of this…And let’s not talk about the cost of running this place… might as well have a police station and ER built in to this complex…
The median home in LA costs 1.2 million dollars. Yeah. Now you know why we have so many homeless people.
@@willieverusethis If you can not afford to live in the neighborhood you desire, you move elsewhere. Young people starting out don;t usually live in the community their parents do.
@@willieverusethis Many acres in the desert.
$1.2 million is a lie. I’m a construction worker and my wife is a paralegal, if you love your family, you’ll save a couple bucks and get yourself a house, We don’t have fancy cars we don’t have designer clothes my wife didn’t even get a wedding ring. Southern California, where only 7% of the planet has this type of weather. The state won’t let you build so of course the value is gonna go up and not stop anytime soon. It’s simple supply and demand.
@@MargaretAnderson-ti1sw This need to be written in the sky by those sky writing planes, on blimps that circle California cities, towed behind prop airplanes, put on billboards along highways, heck drop pamphlets on the cities if we have to. Move to where you can afford. A unit should cost no more than 75K, this is will solve nothing.
Maybe I should just stop paying my taxes and become homeless seems like a good deal
haha MAYBE you SHOULD! go spend a summer "living" on the beach why dont you..?🤷♀🤷♀😁😁
Good luck on the waiting game.
go and try. i tried to get help from govt when i was on brink of homelessness, and the govt was nearly useless for the general population. but if you contact the housing for tribal people, the tribal housing funding programs are extremely helpful if you are tribal. alot of programs help only tribal people, but those programs are very good at doing what they do. the general services for general population is near useless.
Do it, you wont
I agree bud
$50,000 per unit, $550,000 per unit to some politicians pocket = $600,000 per unit! I love math
Each unit comes with a voter's guide.
The material are cheap each unit was 25 thousand dollars the rest was laundered … shame on the government
💯💯💯💯💯
$600,000.00 a unit for a total of 278 units. That is $166,800,000.00!?!?! The new "homeless" residents did not pay for that but the California tax payer did. Yet ANOTHER reason why my taxes where so high over the last few years. Has there been ANY thought about handling the drug problem that many of these homeless individuals have and the potential for drug trafficking, sex trafficking and the gang violence that comes from that? It is amazing how drugs, gangs and violence can turn this $166,800,000.00 tax payer dream to help the homeless into a tax payer funded nightmare. Did Maxime Waters or the mayor of LA mention ANYTHING about that?
Exactly
Projects did not work, why would this?
That's cheap for LA. Yes, they said they would have services for drug addicts, and yes, they said there would be extra security for all of the problems that come from housing the mentally ill, impoverished, and drug addicted. I don't know- would you rather have homeless encampments all over or buildings like this on skid row? I don't think there is an easy solution to the problem, and all solutions are going to be expensive. The taxpayer has to subsidize the system, because private enterprise will not step up to the plate. Otherwise we will all be living surrounded by homeless encampments, because we didn't want to be taxed to fund mental institutions and drug rehab centers and did away with them in the 1980s under Reagan. It's more expensive to house them in prisons in the long run- $132,860 per year per inmate.
bro, they are aloted govt funding to do this stuff. by NOT building housing they are breaching their responsibilities by taking taxes and not giving back to the people.
@@willieverusethisThank you for explaining this so thoroughly and concisely. Homelessness is a complicated problem that involves so much that to begin to tackle it requires focusing on one thing at a time step by step. Housing is important because the encampments, while understandable, are problematic. I’m looking forward to more of these being built, maintained, and managed.
Never vote D again

Wasn't that "the Carter" in New Jack City as the first crack tower
Homelessness is an industry that the people making money dont want to go away
Still sounds over price per unit
It still sounds like the average tax payer can’t afford to house a homeless person
Because it’s brand new.. why not an old motel or apt Bldg converted to them instead?
@@sbsk2526 They have been purchasing old motels and converting them as well. Skid Row is pretty small, and I think they wanted to keep the population there for the services and because anywhere else the neighbors will object and the project would never get done.
Large circus tents in the desert with services and medical could be just as helpful and much cheaper!!
Just buy the buildings that went down under and stop stealing our tax dollars charging $1000 for a toilet. It's over price because the money is being pocketed
The city has to pay for us hard working people to live here not those bums from other countries and different states
Don’t forget to hire security.
You mean LAPD!!!!
For what?
And not a single veteran will be placed in there as priority...
Nah if you worked or served your country then they don’t advocate for you.
You think there isnt a single homeless person who is a veteran?
bidens migrants will be the priority
30 days and it will be trashed!

The developer is the real winner here
The Homeless Industrial Complex marches onward.
Homeless business is on Fyre!
Karen Bass' crew making Billions!
Yeah, and she's refusing to disclose her homeless finances, yet no one is holding her accountable because that would lead to her people throwing riots on grounds of racism.
I feel like I'm living on another planet. OUTRAGIOUS!!!! Gross misuse of our hard earned tax dollars!!! $600,000.00 per unit? How is this even legal or rational? The average Angelino cant even afford half of that amount for a house.
Definitely a scam. No worries before you know it the receipts will go missing. Just wait and see
Each unit cost twice as much as my house! 😮
It’s okay, they say it’s for a great cause 😂
Should’ve put them on a paid rehabilitation center for at least 5 months, and if they pass they’re eligible to live in that homeless housing tower, not just give it to them. Good luck keeping it safe.
No one to check the checks and balances???? Someone is taking money from this program they need to do an audit of the complete construction
Yeh, not happening.
600,000 per unit? Taxpayer's got ripped off. These politicians are not good at business or negotiation.
If they bought older apartments they would have saved so much money instead and house more of them.. nope they wanted brand new units for these select homeless and only have a limited amount of openings
The crappy apartment complex behind me cost more per unit to build. I was shocked. Construction costs are insane. My dad just got a bid for 150k to add a five foot addition to his house for a bathroom!
Tax payers were scammed by the corrupt politicians yet again.
its the government getting in the way of developers. I bet 15% of that cost is legal and architectural fees. and they had to use federal wage rates and bidding.
Each unit costs more than half of the houses in my town to build, so 80,000 houses give or take.
You don't live in LA. But we would be happy to buy those houses and send our homeless to live in them if it saved us some money.
Whose to going to maintain these units. I hope these homeless tenants keep it clean and sanitize, have them work there since they got it for Free. Otherwise keep them out
Phat Chance that ll happen
Not happening!
How are we getting it for free when we have to pay rent to stay there just like you have to pay rent
Let us see the receipt 😊
It's all on the city website.
This is a luxury dream for those people that they only need to find a job and pay 30 % back of their income to get this PERMANENT, NEW housing
Ridiculous - might as well become "homeless" and get a "nice" free condo
I dare you to
Indeed!!!!
Not really free as it costs one-third of their salary. But, what if they don't have a salary?
A homeless housing tower? I wonder how long that's gonna last
it will get full and then homeless spill into the streets as normal. they have bigger problems than housing in the area that are causing it. also they don't have a game plan to put the people to work either.
Someone put 500k$ per unit of that into their pockets.
What could go wrong?? 😅
New Jack City sounds like a great idea. Meanwhile, others that work can barely afford rent prices.
That's why we have a homeless problem.
So is there going to be no drug, no prostitution, etc. not allowed in the building???
As a resident who is moving in there I sure hope so
What's the over/under on how many days it will take before it's completely vandalized or burned down?
😂😂
Will you be upset if it doesn't?
MORE WASTEFUL SPENDING!!!!!!
I didn't want to agree but done and done
Definitely wasteful spending.
Gee wonder why California is in the RED 😂
How is it that each unit costs more than what you would pay retail for something similar??
It’s brand new 😏
It doesn't. It's in LA. The median home price is 1.2 million dollars.
Why don't I quit my job and go live there for free?
Because you wouldn't qualify
Trust me you couldn’t pay me enough to live there.
2:16 "total cost $595,000 per unit..." "this is a very wise, very smart use of taxpayer money"
The report sadly does not identify the dude that makes that silly statement. Probably the contractor that made a lot of $$$$ on the project.
So next time, probably named proposition HHHH, don't expect me to support or pay for it
It's very wise decision for his wallet. ....Who is this scam...
And someone has 💩 ed in the elevator already 🤬
600,000 x 5000
3,000,000,000
how much did they mention losing or lost 7,000,400,000 lost or spent or mis appropriative funding lost remember that post remember that
The new project's?
That’s what I said! They literally just called them projects.
Call it what you want to but we're moving in 😝🤪 those insults don't hurt
Thank God that these people may get another chance at life. Bless.
They are lying about the cost. It does not cost $600k per unit, especially a “affordable housing unit”
Unbelievable
How much for bribery?
How will they keep the drugs out?
They won't.
That is of no concern...
This is crazy !

And that is your opinion
its not for homeless people if its section A
I think their criteria (or give 1st picks to those)is that they ALSO need to be homeless (preference in the skid row area)
Section 8 funds can be used by anyone who qualifies.
Homeless people are given section 8 vouchers so they can be housed...
Unit looks better than my apt... Paying $1800 😢
Makes me genuinely sick to my stomach
Why because you're not moving in?
I want my tax payer money back. This is BS.
We complain because they sleep on the streets, now we are complaining that they will have a roof over their head. Let's make up our mind. Thank you God for allowing us to help these people and leading us a step closer to clearing up the side walks.
$600.... That does not include utilities year-round.
WHAT THE HECK!!!!!!!
Building more homes doesn't address the root cause of the problem and therefore will not solve homelessness over the long run!
True. But overthrowing capitalism doesn't seem to be in the cards right now.
As a person who is homeless I definitely agree I am moving into this building I also go to school for acting and directing I do not indulge in drugs or an alcohol and I'm very neat and clean and will be starting two businesses however a lot of these people do not need to be in housing they need to be in rehabs I do not think it is right that they're just giving housing to just any and everybody without dealing with the root
B.S. I am sure 300k at least went for bribes and embezzlement. Look at the past projects of similar nature in California.
can we do small homes for like 6k per unit?
hopefully those who were awarded with these units shall maintain the upkeep of the place.
$600,000 for a low-end STUDIO apartment? You can buy NICE condos, two and three bedroom with two and three bathrooms for less than that in Los Angeles.
Homelessness will _not_ be solved ... there's too much money in it.
Los Angeles residents? I bet most of them won't even be born in California.
Are the floors made out of gold? Are the tiles made out of crystals? Are the lightbulbs made with diamonds ? How ???? Seems like a scam from the builders
Wait, so now I could leave my apartment, become homeless and I could live here for free??
What a disaster this will be. The police will likely be called out several times a day. Alcohol and substance abuse will be rife, and there will be fights and dealers will be prolific in the area.
They needs lapd substations on every floor.
As a person who will be in residence there they can do whatever they like long as they don't bring that s*** to my door
We need to elect people who know people who know basic math. We're never going to even dent the homeless problem if we're frivolously overspending on the "solutions."
As a homeless person I definitely agree
a scam
Where do I sign up for
This is going to be a disaster
So you hope
What a waste on homeless, send the homeless to Barstow and house low income family.
It should be a requirement for everyone to be homeless for 30 days. It will give people an eye into what is going on with hopelessness. I bet most couldn't make it......
Are they doing this to see how long it takes for the people to come after the politicians?
Make it as accommodating as possible to keep them inside and outside the public
Thank goodness somebody is doing something to help those in need. We need more community housing, get people off the street
Why is Mad Max speaking? It's not the area she represents.
she only represents color
Isn't it cheaper to send them to more affordable states
Yep and you should go with them
Beware the rise of the Homeless Industrial Complex
Anyone else notice the drug deal going down at 2:50
Are you guys butting the homeless to work too. And pay bills food and rent like everyone else.
Keep in mind tht rick caruso wanted to give homeless boxables way cheaper at 60k per boxable 600k is insane
Police & fire department worst nightmare having to respond to calls over & over again in that building!
600K SO THEY SAY!!!!!!!dont fall for it 🙄🙄🙄🙄 WHO Is REALLY POCKETING OUR TAX FUNDS!?!????!!
I really hope DTLA does a followup report on this with the facts on whom it has helped, what is the community improvement and show the financials on it. If they dont, the politicians will not and the constituents do not demand it LA will be sacrificing so many people. A tower to house 278 people? In a city where the homeless population is from 60,000-80,000? Not very serious are they
How long do you think before the homeless people burn that building down???
1-2 months
I seriously doubt it that's just what you're hoping for because you're jealous because you're not moving in there that's all that is
Whats happens if the money runs out to maintain it?
More taxes to pay for it! Weeeee
Someone needs to audit the accounting for the project. We need receipts. After all it’s public funds they’re using.
You have to remember that California income is much higher as are its prices. This is why many leave that place to live elsewhere because of the high taxes as well. It's just one of those places that have been gentrified to the core. This is why you get the most expensive cities to live in the country stuff. The unit looks like bachelor size as well so they're small, not even 1 bedroom. I think the pricing is high because the included amenities are pricey itself. Metal microwave, metal fridge, electric stove range, etc. Those are not the cheap plastic-types.
And just like that, a new industry was created. You ever see a $6000 chest of drawers? Or a $10,000 headboard from Ikea?
They living better than me in there. I’m paying $2k a month and hadn’t had heat or AC in about a decade
It probably did take 600k to build because permitting and zoning makes building so god damn expensive.
July of 2020
I Paid $23k cash for my house in Tx.
I moved from Calif to do it
No section 8 = reason why people are homeless.
$166 million =>people who already have section 8. They already have housing.
This is idiocy… you get more of what you pay for. The state and county is under no obligation to feed or house anybody. This is luxury housing. You will get more of what you pay for, so expect a new wave of homeless, aka drug-addled people, to make their way to the area.
Housing the homeless fine but luxury living really? You reward bad decisions that may them end up there?
Because LA ctiy forces to use union workers
forces the use of funding for programs to house and employ tribal people. of course.
640 k huh that's enough to put a double wide on about 20 acres out in the high desert for each and every person that would be in those apartments
Homeless encampments: 😡
Housing for the homeless: 😡
People in the comments section flat out don't know what they want.
