    LOL!!! Busted!!! Jim, there is nothing wrong with using a drill driver to screw things together! It makes assembly easier and quicker and I use it all the time.

    love the idea for this press James...cannot wait to see the plywood construction...REALLY curious to see how you make it with the hand tools.

    There is alot that goes into making clocks. I guess that's why not everyone makes them. I am looking forward to seeing this process from start to finish, I guess the only question I would have is at the end is there going to be compilation video going through the entire process from cutting the veneer, making the press and plywood through cutting out all the gears and working out how they go together? Wow that would be that a long video even typed it was long

    James watch out, the powertool addiction start out slowly, you buy a cordless drill & driver set. Thinking it's still kind of a handtool I hold it in my hands. Next power sander and before you know it you'll be part of the festool mafia shoting into everything as jointery. Lol

    Instead of using nuts as spacers, you could also make 2 wooden levers that keep the top board apart. Should be done quickly, and you save yourself a lot of screwing. 8)

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actualy do nto use the nuts to keep the two faces separated. the friction on the screws does the trick.

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo Again what learned - as we say in german. :D
      I just thought you were saying, that the nuts in between are used to keep the two boards separated to be able to put veneer in.

    This design with threaded rod is a tried and trusted kind of thing but there are so many nuts to have to fiddle with during setup. Would it not work to use clamps instead?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have clamps that will put as much pressure as a fine thread will they can work however we just having to adjust four nuts It goes really quickly. all the other ones do not have to ever be touched once they've been put in place. It's just a four on top that actually lock it down.

    Awesome. I'm building a table top soon, that is in a couple of sections but they will be 1400x1400 tops. Do you think i can make something like this that big and still get enough clamping pressure?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a fairly wide table but not the problem for most clamps that long. The width of the table has very little to do with a clamping pressure required. it's more to do with the surface area underneath the clamps. So the question is how thick is the top. If you want me to take a look at it feel free to send me an email and I'd be glad to look through the designs.

    • @JustTony72
      @JustTony72 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo thanks James. I'll take you up on that offer once we finish the design. We are building a game table. One that has a removable top top to reveal a board game that's been pre set up our left behind from the previous session. The top was going to be solid wood however we though that would be too heavy and was rather expensive to make not to mention the risk of it bowing over time. We then though we would veneer 16mm MDF instead. But without a vacuum press I'm now concerned it will delaminate. Overall this table is going to be big. It's 2800mm X 1400mm.

  • @phildodd9942
    @phildodd9942 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great idea ! The threaded rods - are they lightweight alloy ? If so, do they give enough pressure ? Would it be preferable to use steel if it was available ? Sounds a great design for a press, and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action ! Thanks !
