1st & foremost this was a business decision as Mara Akil stated; she saw that Grammar's Grammnet inc. would benefit investing in the show & Grammar saw that also. Nothing wrong with that. And after Grammar saw it was a 'smart TV show' like his projects he made a smart business move sticking with Ms. Akil with The Game. Props first to Akil for seeing the opportunity then second to Grammar for investing in a profitable show that had cultural relevance to us.

Yeah when you think about it really did. It seems like it gave lesser known aspiring actors and stars of yester year a chance to be seen on TV again or for the first time i.e. Braxton family values and Love and Hip Hop or KUWTK.
That show was my childhood. It was inspiring watching 4 strong educated black women on daytime television. Mara Brock Ackil is a genius. I connected with Toni and Lynne.

Huey X nah Melanie & Derwin’s characters didn’t get the raise they thought they deserved so they didn’t come back & were written off. They played it off as Derwin being traded but it still didn’t make sense bc he was their star player & they had a championship team.

Jill definitely should’ve stayed on the show and I definitely believe she was low key blackballed for her decision not to return the only movie role I remember seeing Jill In was THE PERFECT HOLIDAY and that says A LOT the show suffered after her departure. I would pay any amount for a movie to wrap things up. This really was an outlet for black women to relate to. I watched my family as they witnessed Jill not returning, waiting for a series finale, waiting to see what would happen next. And they never got it. I watched all of the episodes I could (thanks to TH-cam having them) and I see why they so desperately wanted more. We need a movie to wrap things up, the audience deserves it. And not to change the subject, but I hate that many Black shows end this way. With no resolution. We fight, we argue but most importantly we heal, we love. The audience needs to see this. I hope and pray that one day the opportunity will present its self for everyone to be able to participate and deliver.

I started watching this on Netflix and it brings a tear to my eyes. It brought back memories of me being young in college, being in love. Living life and aspiring to be successful and have a bunch of my own girlfriends. Black sitcoms are amazing but this one right here was something extraordinary.

As far as the characters go, I always thought there was a similarity in formula. For ex. Joan and Carey ( the leader), Toni and Samantha ( shallow-man crazy) Mya and Miranda ( sarcastic and sometimes Judgey) Lynn and Charlotte (flakey). Same formula with The Golden Girls and Living Singje.
I love both, but don't compare the two. Stop trying. Shade SATC all you want, but that show is a global phenomenon and changed New York City and the television landscape.

Girlfriends is/was my favorite show. I remember when it premiered when I was 6. Was watching it from back then until it ended. I hate that it never received a proper ending. I always pictured my life like the characters. Having a friend group of four with other black professionals. I hope they bring the show back or at least put it on Hulu or Netflix. I think Jill wanted to further her career. It’s extremely difficult for actors to transition from sitcoms to the big movie screen. I think Jill clearly stated that she was ready to learn more and create new experiences for herself. It appears that more than one dilemma interfered with the shows progress.

One of my favorite sitcoms in the 2000s! Each of these women brought out the true authenticity of what we experience as black women. And this was comedy, even better!

JMJ hasn’t had much of a movie career. And yes, her exit took the show downhill. I loved the character “Monica,” though. She was a better main character “replacement” than some shows get.

If well made, no doubt a reunion movie will get the support, esp from black and brown ppl. Why I say that? Look at movies like "Us" "Get out" "Blank Panther" and others. The power of black money.
I used to love this show as a teenager coming home from school and have a good connector with the characters. It was a great positive view on African Americans and I haven't seen shows do that. It was funny and serious and had great lessons. I still watch it to this day. It really spoke to me and us black folks dont get shows like this that have characters to look up or relate to. I binge watch it whenever it's on tv when they do marathons. A classic gem. Jill was a fool to leave. It's not always greener on the other side

I loved Toni, but the show would have survived without her. The initial slump would have been anticipated, just like the slump in every show when a main character departs unexpectedly. I think this show was just a victim of the Writer’s Strike. They didn’t have the chance to really find their footing again
As for a reunion movie, maybe 5-6 years ago. Too much time has passed. I’d rather see a nod to them in other shows. Kinda like how Half and Half brought in Max and Kyle for an episode. Let Bow from Black-ish run into one of the girls.

Really liked the chemistry on “Girlfriends.” The characters, meshed. Those last couple seasons, were hard to watch. We need all__the “Girlfriends,” and closure. #please
Love this show. You should talk about one on one. Ended with a massive cliffhanger , was such a good show.
I'm still hurting over this. This was sex and the city for black women. I could not relate to SJP running around Manhattan but I could see myself in Joan. Still a shame that this gem of a show is gone.

Talk about her relationship with Missy, Tim, Genuwine, her close friend Rosario Dawson etc. Her impact on the CULTURE. Where she would be today. How her passing impacted the industry as well as any other areas that you feel are important.
If you could do this without damaging her legacy or focusing on her situation with Robert Kelly, that would be great.
She deserves so much more than that lifetime movie!
