I mean am·nee·zuhk 😂. Not the best weather for fishing lately. Sorry for the slow uploads. No chance to do the float tube video yet either. Still waiting for that along with the opportunity to do more camping videos. Going ice fishing for the first time in a couple weeks so something to look forward to. Happy new year!

One major hint for getting mussels without any sand or particles in them: put them in fresh water for 1/2 hour, then pour salt generously in that water , stir with a broom handle (large stick) then these mussels will spit out all the sand and cleanse themselves entirely. Then after 10 minutes, stir vigorously with a large stick to get the exterior particles off, drain the water, rinse once more, then ready to cook. Guaranteed that you won’t get any mussels with salt or grinding nasty flavors in them.
    Bon appétit

Good one Matt!! Back in the early 70s when camping in Mexico we would forage and as a group bring in Abalone, Fish, Clams and Mussels. Great times and cleaner waters.
This taste test was my lesson learned for today and I never gave any thought to cleaning them either.
We had a big drum made up for the steaming but a small setup like you have would be nice too.
    Thanks for the lesson!

After harvesting mussels put them in a bucket of clean saltwater for 24 to 48 hrs. If there are sand in them it will then filter the sand out, you might want to change the water every 8 hrs or so, so they wont die from lack of oxygen, or use an airrator.
Also if they dont open from cooking, dont eat them.
    Great vid thx.

Quick tip, if you get muscles from a sandy area, let them sit in a large container of water for 24 hours and they will excrete the sand, leaving them clean to eat. The same works for muscles found in areas with copious amounts of seaweed.

My brother, you should make some informational/instructional videos for new fishers. The one I suggest (which would help me the most!) is "How to get started with fishing." I would love to learn from you, how to get started. I live on a huge, popular lake in North Carolina, and I wanna get started, but I don't know the best way. I want to learn from you, but I don't see any videos for exactly that. Let me know! Thanks bro, take care.

Also a good idea to purge and clean off the beards of the mussels before eating. Really simple, just place them in some salt water for a few minutes so they expel some of their waste, and remove the little green hairs that they use to attach to the rocks

Add the shellfish/crustaceans once the water is boiling. It is just a humane thing, something I try and think of. Cool video man!
