Just to let you guys know, the tabla players do use talcum powder on tabla heads. Talcum serves 2 purposes, one it absorbs the sweat off the players hands and two, it helps with sliding left hand (wrist) on the larger drum to get a specific sound.

After playing Tabla fingers badly hurts specially nukkels n sweats a lot as well n tabla is made from skin I think so I think vaslien or petroleum jelly is rubbed on tabla to keep it in good shape n soft
