the 50+ version of haq Ali Ali is pure bewilderment
Qawwali initiated in India and popularized by Amir Khusoro. It is basically sung at the Mazar / Tombs of Sufi Saints. It is a dying art these days as it needs years of practice and dedication plus as these are long devotional songs not much money is involved, thus leading to its decline. However, some families in India and Pakistan have fought the odds and still keep the tradition alive. The best part of Qawwali is the competition / jugal-bandi between the two singers who sing different verses and try to out-smart the other while being within the Sufi framework. Rahat Fateh / Sabri Brothers / Abida Parveen / Fareed Ayaz / Warsi Brothers / Wadali Brothers are some keeping the tradition alive.
Please listen to the full renditions, preferably with subtitles. They are extremely soulful and beautiful. And once you have listened to a few, I’ll share some of other amazing qawwali singers to react 😊
No singing in worship at all. We recite verses from Quran 0nly... singing is a profession and singing RAAGAS is very difficult and different. Raagas have to be learnt from childhood and low and high notes singing like Rahat and nusrat is traditional and is travelling chest to chest . However their composition and music will always be sweet and learnt by generations listening music. He is one of the all time singer to be followed
If you're gonna have a pakistani feature Friday, I would love your reaction on "man aamadeh am" from coke studio. Try listening to Khamaj and Lakh Jatan, Shafqat with Shafqat. It is a Fusion of TWO RAGAS done so seemlessly and two classical pieces so beautifully along with the budapest Orchestra.
In hisdustani classical it's not pre determined. You have improvise with the given notes you can jump from one raag to other and come back to same raag and a song in same raag does not sound same just because of that. For instance laal Ishq and aayat are both raag yaman and bhupali but sound different. Therefore many bandish in hindustani classical will sound dofferent on same raag. And since bandish is of four to lines or five lines that is where khayal music comes in

A very small amount of muslim donations go to mosque. Mostly it's to organizations that give it to poor people. Also in Ramadan almost all mosques arrange free food for people every day at Iftar time. People from any religion can come to mosque. Other than mosques there are many other arrangements of food at iftar, arranged by charity organizations and people themselves.

Qawwals definitely undergo rigorous training of scales and raags from an early age. Once they master the scales they are more able to improvise on the raags. But without mastery of the raags and their melodic properties, improvisation would be impossible. These practice and training sessions of raags are called riyaz. Having said that a lot of what Nusrat and other qawwals do which seems like improvisation are indeed very carefully practiced melodic lines from within the raag. This is all very similar to jazz music, where it seems like the pianist is making things up on the spot but in fact is combining his/her mastery of scales and hundreds of memorized melodic lines and licks to produce a coherent sounding improv. Hope this helps!
Love you guys, I have met The Legend Nusrat many times and Rahat since he was 8 years old. Manchester UK. I appreciate your reactions on Bollywood &Pakistani music. I thought I knew much about music having seen most BW and Pk singers. Since the 70s Mohammad Rafi I met twice late 77, 79.
Dear Brother and sister, in Islam we DO NOT USE any music in mosque. This type of Sufi music is played and enjoyed at gathering OR at Shrines of Sufi Legends. There are two thoughts in Islam. One is that music is forbidden in islam and the 2nd is that it can be used with some precaution BUT NOT in Mosque.
Qawali is the spinal chord of sufi music. Sufi music is basically the words of sufi poets expressed through music. Qawaali was the first and most popular genre to bring the words of the sufi poet to the masses.

Sufism is different from radical islam, It is followed by people of all kind of different communities. Sufis are many times not even considered true muslim by radical Islamic clerics.
Look bro sufisim is not a compulsory part of islam its mystic.and qawali has to do nothing with islam its an art but not religion..amir khusro was a mystic preacher and due to music led society he adopted this mode..qawwali or music is not a religious part because even sufiasim is not a part of islam its a practical relegion
Fun fact ones nusrat had sung qawali for 12 straight hours with just cups of water nothing else. So it is so mesmerising to know a legend and a singer of his calibre was from the same place as me. It seriously is just a owner to be able to call nusrat as pakistani singer
Not really in mosques or in normal prayers we don’t use music or so… this is more cultural way of expression but nit religious and it was used a lot in sufism. I can say more if you listen to recitations without music like recite holy book and or praising God or the prophets in a respectful way, “hamd” or “naat” respectively.
For your next Pakistani Feature Friday, you guys should react to Pakistani band music like Junoon, Awaz, Vital Signs, Strings, and Jal, Roxen, EP, Kashmir...
Listen to some of the songs by Gumal Ali, Jagjit Singh and other Sufi/classical singers from that era. On an interview Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan once mentioned Gumal Ali as one of his favourite singers
Your reviews are excellent. when I first saw you both reacting on a video(Coke Studio) , my first perception was you both just reacting without understanding any thing. But later I found best commentary on Pakistani & Indian music by both of you. Its been 3 hours I am watching your reactions ,though I am exhausted and want to sleep. Thanx both of you
Brilliant video guys. Love your analysis on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan saab. Your so on point with alot of your points. As someone who has lived and loved qawali my whole life being from the same city as Nusrat Fateh ali Khan saab, I gotta say I really appreciate your appreciation of his work. The money is a form of appreciation for the singer and the group for the verses that are in praise of God or his prophet. Singing isn't really a part of the religion however sufi music is a part of the spiritual experience of closeness or comunian with God. You won't find this really in the Arab world but more in the Indian subcontinent. It was created and made prominent by the sufi mystics in that region as a way to bring people closer to God. Its in the blood of the people there.
If you are trynna learn about Pakistani music I would recommend Kahani suno 2.0 by kaifi Khalil (singer in kana yaari) it's awsmm! It broke all the records and is among top 20 of global music
I agree, the song you are referring to is an amazing composition however to understand the deep roots of the culture and lifestyle across the borders there is no other format of music other than the combination of Sufi and Qawali and then there is no other singer on this planet who is as blessed as Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saahab.
You should definitely react to more osts and more of asim azhar 1-Soneya (Asim azhar) 2- Humraah (Asim Azhar) 3- Dard (Asim Azhar) 4- Ishqiya (Asim Azhar) it's an ost as well 5- Ishq mein kaafir (OST) 6- Lal ishq (OST) by Rahat Fateh Ali khan 7- Jaa tujhy maaf kiya (OST) still one of the most popular one 8- Bol kafaara (OST) Pakistan's first music video to cross 100 million

what an unusual choice of raag. Jogiya! I do like the raag but a) I havent heard much of it in northern indian music and b) I think I prefer raag gunkali over it perhaps cause the tetracords are symmetric there.

free flowing conversation, yes, but within the structure of the raag
There is no need of explanation...Nusrat saab's music is puzzle can only solved by God...He only sings for him..💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 Nusrat Saab is Unbelievable when it comes on SarGam❤️❤️
In religious community what they practice is NAAT (Praise of ProphetMuhammad P.B.U.H) or HAMD (Praise of God) but they at most use drums (tambourine and the daf) which is allowed other instruments are not prohibited in Islam (as far as I know it is kind of conflicted by some sects) also I should mention even this practice is not practiced by everyone other than most Mosques during prayer have Quran recital which is done in beautiful tones by Mosque Imams/Qaris it has nothing to do with music just Quran recital during Prayers (Namaz). The Sufi Music comes from Sufi Islam which is a branch of Islam which is heavily inspired by Saints of Islam and their poetries/writings so alot of people perform Qawali Music at their (Saints) shrines but no music is allowed in Mosques infact this Qawali music is also frowned upon by mojor sects of Islam. Above based on my knowledge
If you do another Punjabi Feature Friday, I'd love to hear your reaction on Imran Khan's Amplifier. I'm in love with it. Please do a tribute to the legendary Sidhu.
Culture predates religion in this part of the world called Pakistan.. what you get to hear is amalgamation of years of musical development in the region.. Pakistan became muslim majority in 1947 with considerable Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Parsi minorities the numbers to which declined in years after due to discrimination and hate crimes against them.. the music is the region has been there for centuries..

In the school i was going to in pakistan we had to sing a naat (appraisal of prophet) or hamnd (appraisal of god) everyday and everyone had to sing it. So you can say that this is kind of like a norm but not many people pursue it as a career but usually almost every pakistan can sing to some extend. Just talking from my experience
the money in front of them are not for charity but are for them...its appreciation money, they enjoying the music so they want to give more money as an appreciation...
react to some underrated but awesome songs like (belive me these all are gems) 1. ZAROORAT -Singer: MUSTAFA ZAHID & Lyrics,Music: MITHOON(he composed arijit's most viewed and loved songs like Tum hi ho, Mai phir bhi tumko chahunga) , 2. ISHQ BHULAVA-Singer - Sanam & Shipra Goyal & Music - Vishal & Shekhar (this is SANAM's 1st & only bollywood movie song, he sang it really well) 3. a few AMIT TRIVEDI'S compositions-- meethi boliyan(singer-amit himself), Shauq(singer-swanand,shahid,sireesha) , Namo Namo(singer-amit himself) , Qafirana(arijit)
Actually instrumental music is forbidden in the religion of Islam, so forget about this being done in mosques. It is not part of the religion. Some sufi's who lived here actually wrote poems for the love of beloved (GOD) and that is mixed with cultural music and took the shape of sufi music which is in display here. Islam as a religion doesn't alow it to my knowledge, some argue that it is allowed if it is for praise of God or Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) but as far as my research this is not allowed
no the money is not for charity. It was earning of the group. The much they entranced the audiance, the much they are paid. There used to be no fixed budget for these events mostly previously. The Qawali singer had to work for its payment.
Hello, No islam has nothing to do with music, the music and the instruments used to produce music are totally prohibited in islam and the only sufi music with the exception of musical instruments is allowed in islam religion like the vocals only .
What would music look like if it needed a persona=Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He is the universe of music.

what an unusual choice of raag. Jogiya! I do like the raag but a) I havent heard much of it in northern indian music and b) I think I prefer raag gunkali over it perhaps cause the tetracords are symmetric there.
free flowing conversation, yes, but within the structure of the raag
There is no need of explanation...Nusrat saab's music is puzzle can only solved by God...He only sings for him..💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Nusrat Saab is Unbelievable when it comes on SarGam❤️❤️

You guys look dripped out in matching colours...❤❤
The child sitting next to him is the Rahat Fateh Ali khan the living legend
Rahat is not the child in the video. Rahat is sitting on the left of Nusrat sahab.

Love a lot from Pakistan. we would love to hear more from NFAK.
I went to 3 or 4 performances by Nusrat Fateh Ali khan and Qawwali group, absolutely amazing.
Pride of Punjab 🔥
In the school i was going to in pakistan we had to sing a naat (appraisal of prophet) or hamnd (appraisal of god) everyday and everyone had to sing it. So you can say that this is kind of like a norm but not many people pursue it as a career but usually almost every pakistan can sing to some extend. Just talking from my experience
A short information for both of you about Sufism or Sufi music. It does not come from India or Pakistan, but from Afghanistan, old Persia.
Missing you UstaaD_NFAK 😢❤
the money in front of them are not for charity but are for them...its appreciation money, they enjoying the music so they want to give more money as an appreciation...

2. ISHQ BHULAVA-Singer - Sanam & Shipra Goyal & Music - Vishal & Shekhar (this is SANAM's 1st & only bollywood movie song, he sang it really well)

Goated songs
Have you heard sehmi hai dhadkan by Atif Aslam? Quite underrated
Not true. Sanam did DHAT TERI KI for a movie with V-S, which was their first Bollywood song, and half a dozen more film songs after that.
can react to SAMI YUSUF LIVE. It is called BEYOND THE STARS FULL LIVE CONCERT.
Great video!

no the money is not for charity. It was earning of the group. The much they entranced the audiance, the much they are paid. There used to be no fixed budget for these events mostly previously. The Qawali singer had to work for its payment.
