@@mykotron you'll definitely want to take it out and disassemble it on a work surface. It's a pain. I did take a dremmel cutting tool and cut an access hole for the internal Sim card slot through the front plastic, so if it ever happens again, you don't need to take the whole head unit out (just replace the Sim card)
@@wiggleweigel I ended up getting it… used a class 10 sd card and the speed boost is definitely noticeable. Stoked… finally have a stereo after 5 months.
Thank you so much. These directions were perfect. I have the AHV-W4500NEX and there was only one tiny difference. There was an extra screw on the top metal piece. Other than that, everything worked great. I really appreciate you putting this together. I thought I was going to have to purchase a new radio or send it into Pioneer and wait 2 months to get it back. Thanks to these great directions, I did the swap in about an hour total. Thanks again! Also, for anyone who uses a Maestro RR or RR2, you dont need to reprgram it for everything to work.

My screen does not work with the 4400 files and there there is alot of things that are missing with the 4400 files its better off to just not try it on a 4500, it also locks the sd card so its burnt after you load it in the radio the first time someone should be putting this info out there

Hi Tim, thanks for the videos around the SD card fix. I have an SPH-DA120 and I am trying to write the image to and microSD to SD adapter using win32disk imager. I keep getting an error that says "an error occurred when attempting to write data to handle error 1117". Do you have a video around this error? Should I use another image tool? I dont think it is the microSD adapter, I do have an internal SD card, and not sure how it is connected. I have a Dell precision 5820 so it could be pcie. I have seen some people saying that connection could be too fast? that I should use an external or USB card reader? I am really trying to get my stereo to work, I dont feel like spending another 300 bucks on a new carplay radio. lol I did join avic411, but I can't find anything in there either.
My unit turns on, boot loops, but won't let me eject the face plate to remove the radio. Any ideas how to remove it without breaking anything? The SD card is very corrupt and never gets me to a point where any buttons respond on the unit.
Was able to do the software just to break the wire tape behind the radio. i got it to work, screen is blue and hard to touch, possibly due to the wire tape thing
I put this soft into my z9200dab. Works... Bo not like i wants. The display dont want to response when you want to click somethink. Is it my foult ? Or propably sd system. I know its not for my radio, but worth to try :/ im live in poland so i dont want to buy card from eBay.

Will this work on the AVH-W4500NEX ? My head unit got stuck in the boot loop and I went on ebay and bought a good SD card that was supposed to have all of the files on it that was needed and now I'm still having problems with the head unit sometimes the head unit freezes up and doesn't work properly and now I get clicking sometimes in my box and amp so I want to find somewhere I can download the firmware for that specific radio and pioneer only has the AVH -W4400NEX Firmware
People have found the W4400NEX file will work in the W4500NEX to fix the boot loop HOWEVER the touch screen will not function. Unfortunately you will have to try another W4500NEX SD card from eBay. Note that the file needed is not the firmware file, but the actual radio boot file. There are two SD card slots in your radio. The one you need to access / replace is located below the "accessible" slot you can see behind your faceplate. I understand the computer can't read the AVIC file but the card now shows a 8 separate drives and a pop up for each to format is this what I should be seeing? Hi Steve, same thing happened when I wrote the files and I was a little worried. I'm betting your computer looked something like this: th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html That's normal behavior when a PC tries to read the card. You should have no issues with it once it's inside the radio. -Tim

This happened to me. I fixed it by taking the back of my finger nail and going along the very bottom edge of the screen. It was just enough to get to that bottom row.

Sorry for the late reply Chase. As you've found, the 4400 file will load in the 4500 unit, but the touchscreen won't function. Unfortunately the 4500 file has been super evasive. Hi Christopher, the z9200dab is the international version of the w4500nex. The w4400nex software apparently will load and boot in both the z9200dab and the w4500nex, however the touchscreen will not work. You can search the forums here (avic411.com/) to see if anyone has posted a working image file for either the w4500nex or the z9200dab. Last I checked it wasn't available for free and you still had to purchase on eBay. Here's a link to one, it runs around $35USD ebay.us/Mb4CYb I would message the seller first to verify, but I've heard from multiple sources that they're backwards compatible. I believe the FM radio will be in "US standard" meaning the stations all end in odd numbers (102.7FM, 93.1FM, etc) where the EU uses even numbers I believe? (102.2FM, 95.6FM, etc). The folks who used the US w4400nex file in their z9100dab stereos solved this FM frequency issue with a factory reset once the new SD card was loaded. -Tim

I would give this a shot to see if you can "rescue" the two SD cards you tried writing to already: th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html Then possibly try to borrow a friend's computer to try the process again? There are two SD card slots: one accessible from behind the screen, but this card needs to be inserted into the internal SD card slot which is only accessible through disassembly of the unit. You would need to find the file for the 5000NEX first. The w4400nex file won't work in that unit. There is a pre-loaded SD card for ~$45USD ebay.us/xEJVPW It's also worth searching for the file on the forums as well. They're constantly uploading new files. www.AVIC411.com
My 4400 first started saying that the system detected improper brake wiring. Then got a software error. Now it randomly restarts and when using USB for tunes, it starts on the same song/same spot every time. Do you recommend I replace the internal SD as well? Thx!

Not sure about an iPad but one commenter was able to write the files with MacOS using the program "balenaEtcher" If you're able to install that on iPad and have access to an external SD card reader you might be able to?
Really strange! Has worked for everyone else so far. It’s normal to get a ton of errors on your PC when it’s finished. Have you tried installing the card in the head unit yet? If you need to “un-corrupt” the SD cards, this process seems to work ~80% if the time. th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html If you ordered your SD cards online (Amazon / eBay) it’s very likely they’re counterfeit and faulty. They’ll show a 16GB capacity in windows, but will only have a third of that in reality. Hope you get it squared away man 🙏

@@brycedavis8 After writing the files to the card you should get all these error messages on your computer th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html (If your computer never gave you the errors you may need to retry writing the files with Win 32 Disk Imager) Also make sure the cable from the touch screen is fully inserted and locked back into the motherboard. (It's been an issue for others in the past). From there I would probably follow the video here (th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html) to delete all the data on the SD card, then try re-writing it again following this video. If that still doesn't work, I would try a different SD card. Some people say not to use a microSD card / adapter combo, but I don't know how that could cause any issues.
@@VanwithTim i did not receive the errors - it wanted me to format when it was done but per the video i removed the card. Now if i plug the SD card into my computer it will not show up as if its not plugged in. I've gone through 4 SD cards so far this morning
@@brycedavis8 @Bryce Davis Try running diskmgmt.msc with the SD card out of the computer. Then insert it and see if it shows up in the left most column labeled "Volumes". If it does, you should be able to restore the SD card by deleting any / all partitions on the SD card, then reformatting it. (Kind of explained here: th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html) That should at least get your SD cards back to factory usability again, then we can try re-writing the files with Win Disk Imager.

I don't know if the files are available. I believe the X8650BT is the same as the W4500NEX and SPH-DA120 but I haven't been able to find those files either. I haven't heard of anyone with the W4500 files yet (aside from purchasing on eBay unfortunately). Someone here in the comments tried the W4400 files on the W4500 and the unit booted up fine but the touchscreen was unresponsive. Had to purchase the W4500 file to restore full functionality.
Out on the road with limited cell service, but check around avic411.com/index.php?/forum/63-nex-series/ The 4400nex file won’t work on your 5201. Worst case scenario you may have to purchase the SD card or file on eBay.
Unfortunately, this file won't work on the 4200nex. I searched the avic411.com/ forums for a while but no one has uploaded the 4200nex files yet. This ebay seller has the file for sale ($35 USD). I keep close tabs on the comments throughout the videos on these Pioneer units. This is the first time I've seen the 4660NEX unit mentioned. Did some searching across the forums and even eBay but came up empty handed. I would message eBay seller: www.ebay.com/usr/asd255786 They're very helpful in the forums and through their eBay store. Hopefully they can help out!

It should show a bunch of errors on the computer when finished but should work once installed in the stereo. (Make sure you're taking the radio apart and installing it in the lower SD card slot on the motherboard, not the one accessible through the casing) Make sure you're writing the right file for the right stereo as well! @@eldiablito1776 Have you tried deleting the partitions by running windows diskmgmt.msc ? You won't be able to delete it via windows explorer like you would a regular file.

i've been trying to sing up for the site this was posted on however it won't send the confirmation email.... i digress, would this image work for the AVH-W4500NEX? i haven't been able to get a definitive answer to this. right now my assumption is it's only for the AVH-W4400 but the image is labeled AVIC so just was trying to verify
There's an eBay seller on the forums who has modified the W4500 file to work on the W4400 (and give full W4500 functionality) so it would seem the hardware is the same. That also points towards the W4400 file being backward compatible with the W4500 unit (although your extra W4500 features would be lost) You could always give it a shot. Worst case, you're back where you started! (It wouldn't cause any damage to the unit by trying it). I'm no expert on these things. I'm just the guy who made a video on it lol. Keep us in the loop! @@VanwithTim so I found a spare SD card so I gave the AVIC.zip a go and the radio DOES turn on now however the touch screen doesn't work but the buttons do. not sure if it's the software or the ribbon cable, I was just so happy i got it turning on i just stopped for the night. if that forum ever sends me a confirmation email I'll post on there too. not sure who the trusted sellers would be for that. i would also prefer to download the image and use my own SD only for the fact that most sellers showed a 4-5 week lead time. one from Russia and not sure where the other was from
@@chio987 nice!! I had a LOT of people mention an unresponsive touch screen and it was always the ribbon cable needing a little adjustment, but none of those folks were trying the 4400 file on the 4500 so I’m curious what your results will be! Let us know what you find 🙏
@@VanwithTim well after cleaning and reseating the ribbon cable i can say it still doesn't work. made sure it was in as far as it could go and lined up. i never removed it from the main board side, only the daughter board that the screen attaches to. everything worked flawlessly before it crashed which was the reason for this prosses. no other ideas yet.

I cannot log in on the keyboard to put my security code in it is corrupt, the keyboard bottom row buttons are not calibrating properly. Many have this problem, will you please help us out and know it's the bottom row buttons won't work. You seem like you may have the answer to this fix. Please advise and thank you /
This happened to me. I fixed it by taking the back of my finger nail and going along the very bottom edge of the screen. It was just enough to get to that bottom row.
I will try again, but sure I have tried that. I bought another unit, same model, but need to sell 1, so I will try. Need a 12 volt power supply@@sumtin80
do you know if this will work with the avh-w4500nex? i tried it and it fixed the issue everything works except the touch on the touch screen? any ideas?

As you've found, the 4400 file will load in the 4500 unit, but the touchscreen won't function.

Hi Christopher, the z9200dab is the international version of the w4500nex.
The w4400nex software apparently will load and boot in both the z9200dab and the w4500nex, however the touchscreen will not work.
You can search the forums here (avic411.com/) to see if anyone has posted a working image file for either the w4500nex or the z9200dab. Last I checked it wasn't available for free and you still had to purchase on eBay.

I would message the seller first to verify, but I've heard from multiple sources that they're backwards compatible.
I believe the FM radio will be in "US standard" meaning the stations all end in odd numbers (102.7FM, 93.1FM, etc) where the EU uses even numbers I believe? (102.2FM, 95.6FM, etc).
The folks who used the US w4400nex file in their z9100dab stereos solved this FM frequency issue with a factory reset once the new SD card was loaded.

Hi, SD Card files from AVH4400NEX is compatibility to AVH-X8600BT ?
Unfortunately the 4400NEX is a different file than the X8600BT. You can search around the avic411.com forums to see if anyone has uploaded the file you need. The only other option is the pre-loaded SD card from eBay: ebay.us/Pil5rw

It looks like someone is selling the file on eBay but they want $50USD which seems a bit expensive to me.

Hi boss. I already broke two SD cards. I don't know why but my 4400nex doesn't see new software. I do everything according to the instructions. I cannot use SD cards again because the compurt cannot see them and I cannot format them. Any idea ?
I would give this a shot to see if you can "rescue" the two SD cards you tried writing to already:

Then possibly try to borrow a friend's computer to try the process again?
There are two SD card slots: one accessible from behind the screen, but this card needs to be inserted into the internal SD card slot which is only accessible through disassembly of the unit.
Just want to check that before troubleshooting too much further!

Will work with the Avic-5000nex model?
You would need to find the file for the 5000NEX first. The w4400nex file won't work in that unit.

My 4400 first started saying that the system detected improper brake wiring. Then got a software error. Now it randomly restarts and when using USB for tunes, it starts on the same song/same spot every time. Do you recommend I replace the internal SD as well? Thx!
Wow those are some weird symptoms. Sorry for the late reply. Did you end up trying to replace the SD card? I would probably give that a shot to start with!
@@VanwithTim well I do have the stereo bypassed so maybe that triggered that part. Nonetheless a new SD card solved my issues. I couldn't wait for a reply since this was in my daily driver. Thx though.
@@VanwithTim also there towards the end I could only use the radio. If I pressed the home button it would freeze and restart the unit.
Man that’s so weird. Never heard of symptoms like that but I’m betting it will become more common as the units age.

Not sure about an iPad but one commenter was able to write the files with MacOS using the program "balenaEtcher"
If you're able to install that on iPad and have access to an external SD card reader you might be able to?
I had to buy 2 16GB SDs and this process didn't work, now the SDs are corrupted and cannot be formatted.
Really strange! Has worked for everyone else so far. It’s normal to get a ton of errors on your PC when it’s finished. Have you tried installing the card in the head unit yet?
If you need to “un-corrupt” the SD cards, this process seems to work ~80% if the time.

If you ordered your SD cards online (Amazon / eBay) it’s very likely they’re counterfeit and faulty. They’ll show a 16GB capacity in windows, but will only have a third of that in reality.

@@brycedavis8 After writing the files to the card you should get all these error messages on your computer th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html
(If your computer never gave you the errors you may need to retry writing the files with Win 32 Disk Imager)
Also make sure the cable from the touch screen is fully inserted and locked back into the motherboard. (It's been an issue for others in the past).
From there I would probably follow the video here (th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html) to delete all the data on the SD card, then try re-writing it again following this video.
If that still doesn't work, I would try a different SD card. Some people say not to use a microSD card / adapter combo, but I don't know how that could cause any issues.
@@VanwithTim i did not receive the errors - it wanted me to format when it was done but per the video i removed the card. Now if i plug the SD card into my computer it will not show up as if its not plugged in. I've gone through 4 SD cards so far this morning
@@brycedavis8 @Bryce Davis Try running diskmgmt.msc with the SD card out of the computer. Then insert it and see if it shows up in the left most column labeled "Volumes".
If it does, you should be able to restore the SD card by deleting any / all partitions on the SD card, then reformatting it. (Kind of explained here: th-cam.com/video/pfWDguRujEE/w-d-xo.html)
That should at least get your SD cards back to factory usability again, then we can try re-writing the files with Win Disk Imager.

I don't know if the files are available. I believe the X8650BT is the same as the W4500NEX and SPH-DA120 but I haven't been able to find those files either.

I haven't heard of anyone with the W4500 files yet (aside from purchasing on eBay unfortunately).
Someone here in the comments tried the W4400 files on the W4500 and the unit booted up fine but the touchscreen was unresponsive.
Had to purchase the W4500 file to restore full functionality.

The 4400nex file won’t work on your 5201. Worst case scenario you may have to purchase the SD card or file on eBay.

I did all the steps but it didn’t work
It should show a bunch of errors on the computer when finished but should work once installed in the stereo. (Make sure you're taking the radio apart and installing it in the lower SD card slot on the motherboard, not the one accessible through the casing)
Make sure you're writing the right file for the right stereo as well!

You won't be able to delete it via windows explorer like you would a regular file.

i digress, would this image work for the AVH-W4500NEX? i haven't been able to get a definitive answer to this. right now my assumption is it's only for the AVH-W4400 but the image is labeled AVIC so just was trying to verify
There's an eBay seller on the forums who has modified the W4500 file to work on the W4400 (and give full W4500 functionality) so it would seem the hardware is the same.
That also points towards the W4400 file being backward compatible with the W4500 unit (although your extra W4500 features would be lost)
You could always give it a shot. Worst case, you're back where you started! (It wouldn't cause any damage to the unit by trying it).
I'm no expert on these things. I'm just the guy who made a video on it lol.

@@VanwithTim so I found a spare SD card so I gave the AVIC.zip a go and the radio DOES turn on now however the touch screen doesn't work but the buttons do. not sure if it's the software or the ribbon cable, I was just so happy i got it turning on i just stopped for the night. if that forum ever sends me a confirmation email I'll post on there too.
not sure who the trusted sellers would be for that. i would also prefer to download the image and use my own SD only for the fact that most sellers showed a 4-5 week lead time. one from Russia and not sure where the other was from
@@chio987 nice!! I had a LOT of people mention an unresponsive touch screen and it was always the ribbon cable needing a little adjustment, but none of those folks were trying the 4400 file on the 4500 so I’m curious what your results will be!

@@VanwithTim well after cleaning and reseating the ribbon cable i can say it still doesn't work. made sure it was in as far as it could go and lined up. i never removed it from the main board side, only the daughter board that the screen attaches to. everything worked flawlessly before it crashed which was the reason for this prosses. no other ideas yet.

As for the SD card, you’ll probably need to un-partition it before being able to use it again.
