Bruh you should have updated it - it comes with year old JELOS software. Also, what touchscreen devices have you used that runs Linux? You didn’t even mention Pico-8 emulation either…
Yeah, you totally can do all that stuff but he mentioned in the video he reviews the devices exactly how they come out of the box because that’s what most people are going to do. Most people don’t know how to update Jelos or put new operating systems on these things. They just wanna buy it and have it work
@turnbasedtoddy7664 it comes with rocknix out of the box. And if you aren't willing to play around with the device this probably isn't the hobbie for that person.
i support the original RGB20S and it was really difficult, there is an issue with the sd reader slot not liking certain speeds of cards and it was hell to develop for. kinda cute tho.
I like that they are trying new things a lot. Although personally if I would be the designer I would just slap 16:9 on everything and anything. I want a 16:9 with a vertical build, I much prefer the buttons being under the screen it makes for slightly easier posture.
I guess it's about some people wanting specific display ratios for certain games. I like that they are getting options. I usually prefer to just stretch my game full screen no matter what and will probably put some filter on like hq2x (not scanlines).
While I mostly agree with you, I don’t know if it’s entirely fair to judge this so harsh on the OS that it comes with because every single handheld comes with trash OS. The miyoo mini had a trash OS, all of ambernics devices have terrible operating systems out of the box, pretty much every company has to be saved by the community by making a better OS.
People want pick up and play devices or gifts that don't require work. I have a Miyoo mini plus and the stock os is good enough that I haven't felt the need to get onion on it so far.
I am new to this hobby and among the first things I heard there has been this repetitive opinion hat all stock FWs are really bad. Bought a rg35xxP and honestly... Not really agreeing with this. It was surely good enough to start with, and received already 4-5 updates becoming better and better (the update process is terrible, though). In my little experience, ambernic is actually good enough with their SW, miyoo I'm not sure, installed onion on the mini same day I got it. But Powkiddy .. is a bit different, they seem to go straight to community developed SW, at least in these latest devices, which is probably not the best approach... Community developed fw needs time after the device release to be ready, that's only natural... So my rgb10max3 runs the latest jelos but it's probably an unlucky device, jelos shut couple of weeks after it's release
@@TheMysteryDriver for one, its always a bad idea to use the stock sd card. cheap, unstable, likely to cause software issues, savestate loss. with updating you get newer emulators like ds but i was never big on that handheld myself. updated custom retroarch shaders, updated cores, new features, more options, bug fixes, better stability. apparently also game switcher mode is pretty useful but i never use it. activity tracker is underrated. ports collections and themes
@9:56 when you pointed out how they just change around a few things & just continue to push out products..powkiddy isn’t the only company doing such. In fact you got alot of your major companies like apple doing the same, even game companies are starting to get horrible for it. & like you said “lets see if people want to buy it” & y’all do, you’ve bought every powkiddy & continue to complain when you’re also aiding in their success. The problem isn’t these companies anymore is us the consumers, if we’re just gonna keep buying/taking whatever they push out bc they see they can put minimal effort & still maximize profit.
Respectfully disagree. I found my unit to be very favorable and with Gamma OS coming this thing is really exciting. I do agree with some of the criticism you raise. Good video
Your channel got me into these devices. I love your books. I thank you so much for this. But ive had so much fun in this community as soon as I stopped taking your reviews to heart. My personal opinons with the devices hands are just too different and closer to other channels. I appreciate you still though.
No retro handheld companies makes good OS, Miyoo Mini + needs Onion, R36s/Powkiddy RGB30/ Anbernic RG353V needs ArkOS. They just took advantage of the MKBHD train and applied it to this device. It will obviously work, but that to me along with the continuous critique on software during this review when most handhelds in the space come with shitty software just looks to hate on this device for the sake of having more views. Retro Dodo is a joke
That's dumb. People want pick up and play devices. I have a stock Miyoo mini plus and I don't mind the software so much that I haven't put onion on it.
@9:58 That's with majority of these retro handhelds, there isn't a specific os that every person will like the same exact way. Like with my RGB30 I much prefer ArkOS over any of the other available os for the RGB30 in comparison to many others that may like Rocknix over ArkOS. I hate vertical devices in general while other people love vertical devices.
I like the box, and I like the way it looks, but that sound cracking is a no go. Unique in its own way. And then they cut corners, we all know powkiddy are at the shallow end with quality, so they should reflect that in price and act like a budget company. If they did that, I believe consumers would not have much bad to say. This is a fair video bro awesomeness 🔥
I developed a grip for anybody that's interested. Also since this thing is almost exactly the same shape and dimensions as the analog pocket some of the grips that are out there will likely somewhat fit
You know the audio scratchy is just a normal occurrence it even happens on my real gameboy and other gameboys i have all do the same thing even my sp does it as well but yeah hard to find handhelds with no issue one way or another
There are so many models, too many for me, I just want to play PS One well, does anyone have a recommendation for a good retro mobile device for me please?
For around $50 = Either the TrimUI Pro, R36s or the M18/R43 device (If someone makes a CFW for it) For around $75 = Powkiddy RGB30 (Amazing but niche), Powkiddy X55 or this new RGB20SX For $100 = Retroid Pocket 2S For anything above that, a Steam Deck hands down.
Ya it has decent specs, but at 90 dollars. Ya it's a hard sale, no I would not recommend everyone get this, but I've definitely seen scams that are worse out there that cost Even more. Even so, powkiddy still could do better.
The performance you were getting just doesn't make sense. Even other out-of-the-box reviews seemed to get far better out of this - were both of your devices giving you the same slowdown as low as Game Gear?
PowKiddy makes a lot of garbage, the fact that they sometimes make something decent shouldn't make reviewers look at their products in the same light as Retroid or Anbernic
As much as I wanted to love this, there are just too many issues with this device. Guess I will have to pass on this one. Totally agree with your review. Thanks man❤
Oh yeah, for sure, 100%, it's ROCKNIX teams fault that they didn't receive a pre-release sample before Powkiddy decided to ship it with an OS that didn't have support for it. 🫠

Blade for the GBC, it's a really good game imo!
Does anyone know the name of the game at 7:36? It looks cool
I think it's "Blade" for the gbc. Greetings from germany and happy gaming! :)
