    Your synopsis of Blade Runner 2049 was simply incorrect. K's questioning of his origins came from his implanted memories, not his dreams. That's an incredibly easy thing to fix.
    And about the pacing of certain scenes; take K wondering through the wasteland of erotic statues, looking for Deckard; that scene is about thematic poetry and setting atmosphere, so the pacing is deliberate and purposeful.

      Also, Jared Leto‘s Character is not the antagonist of Blade Runner 2049, he is an idea, a big darkness luring in the background. (Like the imperator in Star Wars, and no one complained about his lack of scenes in the Og trilogy) The actual antagonist and threat of the movie is his replicant.

    CGI shots? It was mostly in-camera composition and matte paintings. Digital touch ups came later.

      John Epperson: I'm curious about what is factually inaccurate in this comparison review. To be fair I didn't enjoy either of these movies, but this review has at least made me think that I might have judged 2049 too harshly when I saw it and that I should possibly give it a second chance. I doubt that I'll ever watch the original Blade Runner again however, it's rather difficult when I'm unable to find any redeeming qualities in the protagonist.

    "Let me and my ADD self make a comparison video about a filmmaking style and pace I absolutely loathe... and not delve into 'spoiler' territory because no one watching this will have seen the first film but still be compelled to watch a comparison piece"
    I agree with a few of your points about 2049 improving on some things from the Original but your scores are far too low for both. As far as Scifi and the general dystopian futuristic film pantheon these two are the creme de la creme.

    a movie feeling long is not necessarily a bad thing. it depends on if it feels long in the way that it loses you in some ways. or just feels longer than it is. if it feels longer than it is then it can be in a positive way. like if your so into the story that you feel every second go by as an amazing experience. thats how i feel with some really great movies. they feel longer because i feel the seconds as powerful and appreciate every second

    • @EricCarter12
      @EricCarter12  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Nicolaj Vangsgaard I agree. And that's what I insinuated when I said that I personally found the movie too drag and make my eye lids go heavy. Evidently this film's length was not for me. Thanks for watching buddy!

    • @nicolajvangsgaard6144
      @nicolajvangsgaard6144 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no problem. i love those versus videos. I agree on most you say and its always nice to experience that. People have a different taste of length and pace. for example some people find the shawshank redemption too slow paced. its very few though since it is considered the greatest movie of all time. and rightfully so. i thought "how good can this really be" before i watched it. then i watched it and it has been my favorite movie since. its the best example for what i said about movies feeling longer because you appreciate every second. the movie is just flawless really. at least in most peoples opinions. including mine. I actually wonder what you think of it? if you have watched it of course

    • @EricCarter12

      Nicolaj Vangsgaard I actually haven't seen The Shawshank Redemption yet. Another movie that I want to see but haven't is Hacksaw Ridge. They are on my list of films that I have yet to see. So I will get to them eventually but right now I am incredibly busy.

    I have to say that I found Blade Runner 2049 to be some kind of rare masterwork of cinema and one of the all time best sequels ever made. I respect the first movie, but I didn't quite love it. I agree that Blade Runner feels too long. However, despite that 2049 is pretty much 45 minutes longer, it didn't feel as long as the first movie to me. Everything was beautiful to look at, but never did it feel excessive. Some shots linger a tad, but that helped the movie breathe more. I think people that felt this was a problem are helplessly stuck suckling the teat of tired Hollywood conventions. They went to the theater expecting a wall-to-wall action flick with fast editing. I mean, the movie could apologize for being better than that, but why?

    When you mentioned Nolan took inspiration from Blade Runner for Gotham, I was reminded that Rutger Hauer, who plays Roy Batty, plays Mr. Earl in Batman Begins. Loved both Blade Runner films, even if the pacing is slow, and they can feel long. Not a whole lot of wonderful things you can talk about without spoiling either one.

    I don't know what was said about the films as I only came here for the comments, and though I am a huge fan of the entire Blade Runner franchise inclusive of practically everything, I was so impressed that the recent film covered at length and depicted more fascinating ideas as it had the ability to. I thought as a film and a story with its story flow, this latest film was better made than the original and was much more true to the vision intended by Scott as well, including scenes he created which used to be in the old storyboards as I've studied this franchise extensively. I really thought the film was great, and beat a whole lot of the other neo-noir cyber-noir films. The impressive thing about the first was that it was 1982 and our expectations since then are a lot harsher and people are less easily impressed. This film was lacking iconic visuals and scenes and performances which make the original Blade Runner a classic film and major achievement in film and special effects at the time, but if you watch the original film in its versions the story is not as nicely laid out and straightforward as this one, nor does it really cover quite as many interesting ideas and technologies as this one goes into a bit more. So while watching 2049 I thought "oh this might actually be a better movie as a narrative and film in general" and wondered if anyone dared express that opinion or were just stuck on whichever is older and first without looking at how the way the movie flows and moves is much smoother and clearer in 2049 and the original was pretty jolty and not as good and elaborated.

    well this review explains the saying "horses for courses" the first movie is a masterpiece! the second an excellent sequel, almost on par to the first. I guess maybe it depends on age to a certain degree, I was born in the early eighties. when I eventually saw the first, it warped my mind. Artistic, surreal, futuristic to me lol it was ground-breaking.

    i feel like these movies really were not meant for you, lot of the things you said were bad in the original movie were its biggest qualities, like the lingering shots that made the atmosphere so dense you could cut it with a knife. the soundtrack of the original is SOOO good because it doesnt sound like any music made regularly today, compared to the 49 one where the music is still good but sounds exactly how you would imagine a neon film music to sound like. the original film is such a masterpiece and i felt really bad listening to you speak so harshly of it.

  • @homerinchinatown2
    @homerinchinatown2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't agree with all your conclusions but I appreciate the analysis. It's a bit weird about where to draw the line between calling something 'bad' vs. it just 'not being your thing', but I guess that's true for anyone doing reviews. I personally like both movies a lot, but again it's a matter of taste. As I think of it, the original BR is kind of like an origin story and 2049 is the second story. Second stories always have an advantage as they can build off the first - but the first story gets credit (or not) for conveying something for the first time.
    Without going on and on, the main thing I was happy about with 2049 is that is was a really good movie. I was concerned that it would be a lame Hollywood action movie made to look like the first one - but that was not the case.

      Yeah, the original was iconic in many respects including the soundtrack and this 2049 seemed to at least respect it and make references to it but was maybe not bold enough or creative enough to allow itself to really be heard independently. A timid soundtrack afraid to compete with its predecessor.

    Great comparison. I love the original, but I think 2049 really is a better film. I also didn't like Neander Wallace. He was just so over the top. However, I feel his hebchwoman Luv is the actual villain of this film (kind of like Darth Vader was the main villain in Empire and not the Emperor) and she was a much more compelling character. Particularly how she would always shed a tear when she was killing someone, clearly showing an inner conflict on some level. The action climax was also one of the most intense scenes I've seen in a while.

    • @aFoxyFox.
      @aFoxyFox. 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with this opinion and yeah Wallace was not seeming very cool or real or anything but over the top and poorly acted in my opinion as compared to what other unique takes could be done with the character, and 2049 as an actual film and narrative motion picture story played out as better than Blade Runner.

    I fell asleep 30 minutes into Blade Runner. But that action scene in Blade Runner 2049's opening. But I do agree with you the visual effects. I liked the plot in Blade Runner 2049 but it was told too slow. Rick Decard has a great character ark and Harrison Ford gives an especially amazing performance. Ryan Gosling was amazing but Ford was a bit better. I wanted more Ford but I didn't want more Decard. Roy had a really weird motif that I didn't get it until my second viewing. I also think that Luv was the real villian and we didn't need Leto's Wallace. The world was better handled in Blade Runner 2049 but it was amazing in Blade Runner. The Music in Blade Runner was weird but I appreciated it more after Blade Runner 2049. The action was amazing in both movies. But I was like "What" when Officer K and Sappy broke the wall. Also, K should have died when Luv beat him up, but Blade Runner 2049 was too good when Blade Runner was a bit above average.
    That's just for me.

    These two films are really products of their time. There was no CGi in the first film. You mentioned CGI so your research of the films are a little uninformed. To be fair though, they are not films for everyone and a VS battle overall is kind of a silly exercise. They compliment each other and the reverence for the first is carefully considered in the sequel. Opinions may vary, but some of the concepts might have gone over many people's heads, including those audiences in 1982 who were also seeing E.T. and. The Thing that same summer. Appreciate your effort, but respectfully disagree with most your negative points. It's not an action movie and Deckard is not Han Solo or Indinana Jones. He's a killer. An actual killer of sentient life. Both films can be summed up with "More Human than Human" and it seems like The Matrix is more your flavor. And Blade Runner has been ripped off and borrowed from TO THIS DAY. :D Cheers.

    Great analysis. I was sketchy about this film because of the obvious reasons they made a sequel to Blade Runner, but your review encouraged me to go ahead and see it. Thanks, mate.

    Geez, the first Blade Runner took place in 2019...
    Too bad we aren't anywhere near this
    concept, lol! Then again, we have sci-fi movies that take place in,like 2039, and we may not be anywhere near that
