    I'm a lifetime knitter (50 years) and have done most things, but was always afraid of socks. NO LONGER- I'm making a pair using your directions! God bless you. You've got a lifetime subscriber here.

    Your explanations on m1r and m1 l are brilliant. I've benn knitting socks for awhile now and gave up on remembering how to be consistent, and simply do a kfb. But you have just shone a light on this so thank you. All your tutorials are really wonderful (as are your podcasts).

      @@crafthousemagic I got it after a few try's. I had tried other videos and your's just seemed to make it easier. Good video quality and explanation. I had previously tried that Turkish cast-on and failed miserably after day's of trying and gave that one up. Thank you Ellie! I sure wish I was near, I would so love to hang out with you. Oh well, I just truly enjoy your videos from afar, here in Kentucky. Thanks again Ellie.

    Hello Ellie Ifound your site quite by accident and subscribed today. You are so interesting down to earth and someone after my own heart. I love to knit, sew, bead, make greeting cards etc. I only wish more people like yourself were around to show these fabulous podcasts. I too feel like my relatives who taught me so much aunts and my mom were still around so I have to watch these videos to get inspired. I also love that a British person is flicking instead of continental knitting. I have down a bit of dabbling with the judy magic loop cast on with the toe up version. I really love that you are demonstrating with the toe up version. Have to try these hiya needles and this beautiful yarn. Greetings from MA . my grandmother was from Bolton England and taught me how to knit.

    Thank you SO much for making this tutorial!!!! I have been wanting to try toe up socks forever because I know it makes it easier when trying to use up every bit of yarn but never could understand the process in a written pattern. Your explanation of starting the toe was perfect and also as a newbie knitter, I have trouble remembering (and had no idea why there was a difference) the m1L and m1R but now I know how and WHY which helps me know when to do what. Thank you so much!!! I could absolutely hug you!!!!! I had to stay up to make my toe til 2am so tomorrow I can do my foot! I can't wait to get to part 2 now :)

    I made my first sock ever doing the top down method and now trying this method. I don't have long circular needles, only the 9" circulars right now and I was able to do this method with the 9 inch US1 size needles. They are smaller but it's do-able! I don't like having a lot of wire hanging out between the needles.

    Ellie, you are amazing! Your explanations are really easy to follow and I can't wait to get started. Would you say that you are knitting for a size 6 UK with that number of stitches? When the socks are finished, would you mind terribly showing your blocking process and what tools you use for blocking? Thank you so much for taking the time to do this tutorial, it is half term in the UK after all and you are probably busy with the family! I for one really appreciate the effort so a big thank you!!

    • @crafthousemagic
      @crafthousemagic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Corrine. I am about a 5 1/2 - 6 UK shoe size yes, However, it does depend on your knitting tension and the yarn you are using. The stitch count and needle size I use is a good place to start though. Good idea, yes I will show how I was and block my socks. Thank you for taking the time to comment x

When you write "knit in the round until your work measures 2 inches..." in the instructions above, do I knit "Magic Loop style" (e.g., K30, reverse needles, K30) or do I knit in the round like a hat (e.g., K60)? Thanks again.

    • @crafthousemagic

    Hi. I need help.
    I first knit one at a time toe up GSR heel socks on one 9” circular. And then knit Two at a time toe up socks on one long circular using Magic Loop
    Now I’ve bought two sets of the same size tips (2.5) and two 14” cables so I can knit Two at a time; Toe up socks; using Judy’s Magic Cast On.
    But on Two Circulars.
    I found Magic Loop really annoying
    I can’t find a sock pattern or tutorial for that combination. I’ve been searching and searching but can’t seem to find anything exact.

    ok, I have tried a dozen times since my first comment and I cannot do this right. When I turn to start the next row I end up with gaps where the turn is. Help! TIA

      Oh no Sorry Tia, I hope I can help. Do you mean that you are getting holes at the edge of your work when you have got past the cast on. The trick is to keep your yarn fairy tight on the corner. If you are having trouble with the rows after the cast on keep your work tight at the edges and carry on. Sometimes it appears a bit loose but once you have knitted your sock you can pull on you cast on yarn and tighten it up. The cast on method is quite fiddly. You may find it easier to use the long tail cast on and knit your sock top down. Ellie x

    Wow what an interesting technique! I love trying different techniques having just knit my first attached i-cord. I've made two pairs of cuff down socks but really want to give toe up a go and now I will using this tutorial! Question though: what's the best way to work out sizing as I would like to make these for my husband, so stitch count in relation to sock size?

    • @crafthousemagic
      @crafthousemagic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! It is difficult to say because people tension there work so differently. Also people have different width of peoples feet varies even if you have the same shoe size. You could measure your stitches per inch on your last socks, then measure your husbands foot circumference. Take away 1.5 - 2 inches from your foot measurement and then calculated how many stitches you need to cast on from multiplying stitches per inches by your husbands foot measurement minus the 1.5-2 inches. Does that make sense? The reason why you take away the 1.5-2 inches is so that they fit snugly, the more you take away, the tighter you will be. Bear in mind that sock yarn varies in thickness so try and pick a sock you have knitted in a similar yarn you intend to use x

      Craft House Magic that's great thank you. I will give that a go with the measurements and see how I get on x

    I hope you don't mind my asking a question about the toe section. I have done half a sock (I'm half way through the heel) and it's a little too big. I've heard podcasters using 56 stitches and I think that may be the right fit for me. Can you still do the cast on 12 and just increase to 56 with the same results as you?

    • @crafthousemagic
      @crafthousemagic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Heather, You absolutely can. Just increase to the number of stitched that fits your foot. You may also want to check whether you need to increase or decrease the stitch count after the heel so that it fits perfectly. Stitch count and needle size will also make a difference. So depending on how you like the texture of your knitting you could go down a needle size if you wanted to instead x

    Hi Ellie, thanks for such a clear tutorial. Could you clarify something for me? When I knit top down magic loop socks I draw out the top needle to knit off the bottom needle. I noticed that you pull out the bottom needle to knit off the top. Is this reversed because it is toe up?

      Carole Blackham try following video from sockmatician as he explains it differently and you might pick it up. It is tricky, it takes a bit of practice

    Hello, I have a sock related question and hope that you can help me. For my son, I always cast on 72 stitches of fingering weight socks. For the first time I’m knitting him a pair of worsted weight socks. Is there a rule of thumb number of stitches in worsted weight that equates to 72 stitches? Thanks.

    • @crafthousemagic
      @crafthousemagic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am afraid I have never knit Worsted weight socks. I usually use 48 stitches for DK. What I would suggest is looking for a worsted weight pattern on ravelry. Or you could swatch and work out how many stitches per inch you get and use my tutorial on how to knit socks that fit to create your own recipe x

    Hi Ellie. Many thanks for taking the time to record your tutorials. I find them very useful. I have two questions if that’s okay. I see that you’ve used a different yarn for the toes and this was changed to the main yarn before you finished the increases. Do you change yarn on a certain row number? My second question is do you use a specific method for changing yarns when knitting socks? Thanks very much. I’m looking forward to your tutorial on heels.

      Lorena Colledge Ellie was using knitpicks felici self striping yarn :)

    • @crafthousemagic
      @crafthousemagic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lorena, I am using self striping yarn so I have not changed the yarn here. However, if I was going to change colour I would knit to toe until I had finished the increases and then switch. I just drop the old yarn and start knitting with the new colour. You have to hold onto the tail of the new colour until you have knitted a few stitches. Once you have knitted another round you can tie the two ends in a bow just to keep them out of the way and from loosening until you sew the ends in. I hope that helps x
