    I would love to know where you are. I am in south central Kentucky near Lake Cumberland and preparing to do a Shed to House and I am looking for land to lease to put it on. I grow a lot of the food I eat already. I have a lot of seeds saved as well.

    My family has been homesteading in ky for 6 years. We’ve decide to move to South Georgia northern Florida zone 9b. We just find that 4 months of not being able to grow food too cost prohibitive. Also,we don’t want our kids and us to be inside for months each year. So we’re starting to look for some land near the fl Georgia border. We’re really excited to be able to grow citrus, Avocados etc. so much more flexibility

      We plan on building a green house to help with growing. The summers are hot and long and find sometimes you have to stay in just to stay cool. Some summers are really terrible.

    New subscriber here! I am making the same transition. I live in East Kentucky in a small town on the Ohio river. Thankfully my current home and car are paid off. I moved here from Colorado in 2016 because of the lower price of living. I am looking for a place in the country to get started. I may have found one hopefully and my kids are going to move out here to help make it happen.

    Great job being debt free. That's the first step to freedom!
    If I were in your shoes, I would build a root cellar next. Your canned goods need to be in a climate controlled room. Root cellars are inexpensive and don't have to have electricity. If not, insulate the shed and add heating/cooling. You have a lot of rust on those lids and need to use things up before the seals break. I do have a few jars of older things but try to preserve 2 yrs worth and rotate some crops every other yr or just grow enough for fresh eating in the off year. It saves time canning.

    • @NewStartHomestead
      @NewStartHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was talking to my husband about doing the root cellar when we clear the area we intend on building the house. We have to rent the machine and we go ahead and dig the area we want to put it.

      Thank you for watching. Kentucky is a beautiful place. We also struggled finding property with owner financing that we could afford. We came across this property but was raw land. I’m sure during this time it’s much harder. I hope you are able to find what you are looking for. It differently is worth it.

    With the cost of lumber using your own lumber seems like the best way to go. Looking into renting mobile sawmills when you have lots of logs to cut up. You should be able to store a lot of lumber over time slow letting it dry. Slow and steady and smart!!!!

    • @NewStartHomestead
      @NewStartHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for Watching. That is a great idea. We have talked about buying the mobile sawmill. There are some really large trees on the property and would help a lot with cost.

    I love the sincerity of your message and your video - and have been contemplating homesteading myself. Moreover, I am curious to know what criteria you and your husband decided upon when it came to selecting your particular parcel of land - and also, why you chose the state of Kentucky? Perhaps this might make a good follow-up video. Thanks (new subscriber) !

    Wow, what a great success story! In the beginning as you spoke about financing your property and financing the trailer and all of that I was thinking, oh no, bad idea. That’s because it takes real, true, dedication to do what you’ve done! So you have a lot to be proud of and your family can benefit for generations.
    I’d like to add some thing that may be controversial, but I believe in the long run it will help you a great deal. Please forgive me if this is not acceptable. In your story you talked about looking for a piece of property. You looked for a piece of property here and you looked for a piece of property there. Then you found a piece of property in Kentucky. What I’m proposing is you drop the word piece. You did not buy a piece of property, you bought the whole property and it’s yours! There is no other piece that you didn’t get. Words are powerful, accept in your heart that what you’ve done is powerful as well. Best wishes

I’m just amazed at your accomplishments. My story has many similarities and understanding the struggle. I now have land near the great Ohio River. You have to keep your eye on the goal and preserve, and that’s what you’ve done!
