    Codenames is explicitly named as Kaise, who is Kiin's daughter in Elantris (Sarene's cousin). And is supposed to be a main character in an Elantris sequel.
    I am fairly sure that The Lost Metal is going to have driven Brandon to write the Elantris sequels.

    • @kaladongstormguy
      @kaladongstormguy ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh wow, great catch. Even though Elantris is probably my least favorite Cosmere book (I still like it), I'm super excited for the sequel. Not only will Brandon be returning to Sel as a more competent writer, but I'm also really curious about where he'll go with the plot. Elantrians are practically gods again so I wonder if the conflict will be internal or if it will be against the weird storm thing in the cognitive realm on Sel.

      @@kaladongstormguy I think that Brandon wrote The Lost Metal with the clear knowledge that he was going to write the Elantris sequels with Mistborn Era 3. And I don’t think he can avoid it now. At least from what he said in the past, Kaise was supposed to be a main character in at least one sequel. And I think by introducing her as a Ghostblood, he’s making a promise that we’re going to see her path there (and likely Shai’s as well)

    I am fairly sure we saw Skybreakers too!
    When the Ghostbloods were sent to help Steris sink the fleet in the harbour - one of them double checked to make sure it was legal before flying up and away to sink the ships.
    Steris presumed they were allomancers but I’m sure at least one was a Skybreaker. It seems too deliberate as a single line of dialogue.

    This is actually the second time we’ve seen and Aether in the books. Mraize had an Aether in his possession in his place in Sebarial’s camp. It was the pink crystal in a box that seemed to always be flaking. I’m super interested in Aethers as they need water to be used (like Sand Mastery), requires a bond (like a Spren although I think Brandon said that multiple people can bond an Aether), and may have inspired the appearance of Cultivationspren (Aethers are apparently older than the Shattering so maybe Cultivation knew about them and it influenced their appearance).

    For Aethers' name, it appears Brandon chose Indian/Hindu names as base (like he chose French names as base for Scadrian names). Shri Prasanva is very close to Prasanna (meaning happy/content). Silajana sounds very close to Shila Jana, which if translated directly (from Sanskrit), means Stone People (Shila-Stone, Jana-People)

    I think that the reason Hoid is working so hard to protect Wax might have to do with the letters between him and Harmony in the epigraphs of Oathrbinger and Rhythm of War (which were presumably written around the same time as the books, and therefore before Era 2). Out of all the Shards and other people/dragons that Hoid contacts, Harmony seems to be the only one sympathetic to his cause and willing to work with him in some way (probably because he wasn't one of the original Shards). We don't know exactly how closely they are working with each other, but Harmony does indirectly mention Wax in one of the letters so I don't think it's unreasonable that Hoid wants to keep Wax alive as part of whatever him and Harmony are working on

Wit mentioned Adonalsium, by name, to Dalinar in Words of Radiance, not sure if there are other instances, there might be one in an epigraph in one of the other SA books. 2. I think a lot of the time we conflate Mraize's and Iyatil's actions/motivations/etc (ie Rosharen Ghostblood) with _Kelsier_ himself. I've never found Kelsier to be particularly "villainous". I mean I can see why Brandon said that in any other story he would be the bad guy... but I haven't seen him be truly _villainous_. The only time we've actually seen him in Roshar (not saying where, because spoilers, but if you know, you know) he seemed less "bad guy" than "on his side rather than Gavilar's"... and let's be honest... that's a smart move, Gavilar is an idiot. Kelsier has his own version of morality, and I don't agree with all of it, for sure.

    Loved how differently the Ghostbloods were portrayed in this book vs Stormlight. I do think it primarily goes back to the "protect Scadrial" tenet of the org. In a way, I think Kelsier has expanded his Skaa vs. Nobles mentality to a Scadrial/Ghostbloods vs. the rest of the Cosmere one. They can be a force of heroism and hope... if you are on the right side.
    I think the Rosharian branch of the Ghostbloods being so much more sinister and ruthless in general is a deliberate choice on his part. I can see him subtlety encouraging it through non-intervention when it comes to Mraize and Iyatil's running amok. Despite him not being able to physically travel there, Kelsier just doesn't seem like the type of leader to lose control like that.

  • @alder2460
    @alder2460 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Well, I finished The Lost Metal yesterday, it was so full of Cosmere, that's great.
    I would think that Hoid is trying to ally himself with Harmony, as Harmony was the only one responding somewhat positively in his letters (SA) to the threat of Odium. So it seams that Hoid is trying to make sure that Harmony survives long enough and collects enough power to face the future.
    I've missed Shai, and Codenames being from Sel. Mainly because I've forgoten Shai names, yet I thought for a momet it might be her when it was disclosed she can do Forgery - but I've dismissed it. I'm bad with remembering names :(
    Mara flower being Ghostbloods symbol was something theorized on 17th Shard forum so I was sure that's it. Nice to see confirmation about it.
    And so many new things about magic! I'm particular excited about Awakened safe (as it's my favourite magic system, more of it please) and Shai-Elantiran abilities, as she drew an "Aon-Elendel" on ground, that works like city of Elantris with Connection, and grants her abilities to use AonDor with full power. So many new possibilities. And Aether - most information about them was from Brandon's words, and it was mention in SA (Mraize had something Aether related), so it's good to see what it can do.
    I'm also think that the differences between Ghostbloods on Scadrian and on Roshar are very important, and make sense when Kel is talking to Sazed at the end. He sees every other world as a threat to Scadrial, and what's the best way to make sure others are not a threat? Conquer them. That's why he pushes Sazed to help with technology and space travel, and why he treats Roshar as a resources for Scadrial. Kelsier is not that much of an hero as we like to think of him.
    Marasi was right about Ghostbloods. Kel's inaction and gatekeeping vital information almost lead to destruction of Roshar. Kel puts all blame on Sazed and took credits for helping, when Sazed did more that Kel ,despite his inabilities. Ghostbloods would not even knew end was coming without Marasi forcing them to act, and she was placed in Police by Sazed. Marasi was the reason disaster was averted. Kel should do more, he should trust Sazed and his brother when they have Set as common enemy. If during that 6 year break between books Marasi was informed by Ghostbloods about Set's plans, it would have ended much earlier and safer.
    Autonomy as a Trell was obvious one, as it was foreshadow from the Alloy of Law - it was always about being independend. But that's not the bad thing to be obvious. Autonomy's army is that they kind of looks similar to Threnody's Shades. So I think they are some sorts of Cognitive Shadows similar to Shades and Fuzed.
    Strange red hair people? YOU AIRSICK LOWLANDER!!
    The Lost Metal being Lerasium and not Atium is good move, I predicted it would be one of them (well, there wasn't that much choice). Now that they can make both of them (although Lerasium is very difficult/one time thing) it's a gamechanger. But It's worrisome that Harmony might become Discord.
    Well about "well" Roshar - Era 2 Mistborn takes place in between SA5 and SA6 and Hoid is on Scadrial so it either means that Roshar is ok for now, or Hoid was "banished" from Roshar. But than it seams like Perpendicularity on Horneaters peeks is not blocked by Fuzed so it might suggest that Roshar is good for now.

    I think the Men of Red and Gold might be related to the Iriali. Gold skin and hair, the “human-interest” newspaper publisher seems to reference a group living in Bilming. I think these might be the ones who as an advance force brought Trellium onto the planet in the first place and possibly founded the Set. After reading Marasi and Moonlight’s discussion about Autonomy it resonates with the Iriali’s religion of The One. We know the Iriali are unrelated to the Ashyn Rosharans and are migrating from planet to planet, so its possible they originated from a Bavadin invested shardworld.

      Another possible connection I'm not seeing anyone else talking about is Aether usage being similar to Sandmastery. Both require a spore like organic component and drain the water of the user. I think this might be the same type of plant or organism being used in different magic systems.

    I was conflicted that I was reading the book and I liked the ghostbloods, since when you read stormlight, you tend to mistrust them. But I think it is all about perspective. In stormlight, their interests aren't fully aligned with the protagonist interest. But here in Lost Metal they are fully aligned. I think their perception will be dependent on the book. So all Mistborn, I expect them to be liked, since their goal is to protect scadrial. But I expect other books we may not like them. I wonder if later cosmere books will be like Kaladin in Oathbringer at the fight in the Kholin palace. He saw friends and both sides and froze because of it. I just read through everyone's comments and it's all just so cool and interesting. I don't think I need to re-say a bunch of things others have already said. I noticed a lot of the cross-overs but not all of them.
    A couple things:
    I was SO EXCITED when Moonlight turned into Shay. I knew it!
    I was confused for a while why Hoid would be a ghost blood working for Kelsier since I knew he would never do that. I must have misinterpreted Moonlights nod to him in the other delivery truck when they were about to do the sting. Did I miss something here?
    Looking back I subconsciously knew something was off about how the sky breaker shot into the air, but my mind just immediately wrote off anything but allomancer since we're in Mistborn. Since.... there's no possible way to have anyone outside of Scadrial there. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
    I hadn't thought of Wayne's actions at the end being a precursor for space travel- that is really cool! (wait was this comment from your discussion with Merph? I just watched that too, lol)

    I had a theory before the lost metal was out where the people in gold and red couldve been related with Nalthis of some sort. i dont think we now anything about the actual state of the planet, but gold and red were de colors of Lightsong the Bold, the returned who represents braivary. Could the gold and red forces be lifeless. Now you just quote harmony talking about autonmy and saying she likes those who are bold, maybe autonomy already intervined in nalthis and took in the technology of lifeless, and the gold and red could be a reference to the atribute of lightsong or even a hint that autonomy may have taken over nalthis (which could give and explanation on way vasher is on roshar).

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really interesting! Lifeless didn't have gold skin and red eyes, but maybe it could be a new form of them? Especially if Autonomy stole them? As Lightsong has been long dead in Mistborn, though, I don't know if it would be connected to him specifically...

    • @kikop.2957
      @kikop.2957 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bookborn i think in the future lightsong could be a sort of god to the people, like in this book the religion of trell is probably an adaptation of trellagism (dont know if the name is right) a religion existing before era 1. This suggest that autonomy takes a specific believe in the planet to adapt it and put an avatar representing the religion. That could also be the case of nalthis, where probably for the people lightsong could be de god of braivary, and autonomy thought it could be a good religion to take upon. In scadrial the trellagism talks about the stars and life, as well as autonomy talks about spreading her life on every plane. I know its not a well settled theory but there are interesting aspects of it. The red and gold could be bc autonomy is using its investiture to create lifeless without biocromatic breaths.

    I’m not sure how the timeline works exactly between MB era 2 and SA era 1, but I’d be cautious in thinking anything from lost metal guarantees any safety for Roshar.

  • @PonderingsOfPete
    @PonderingsOfPete ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So two things that jump out at me, one having multiple sub points:
    The golden men with eyes of red: we know that is corrupted Investiture because that’s just the color of Corrupted Investiture. So Autonomy stole it. I think that they are Awakened soldiers like the Lifeless from Warbreaker. Sanderson seems to be going for this fundamental contradiction about Autonomy. Avatars are still affected by Autonomy’s will, despite being “autonomous.” Booming was full of formulaic, samey houses that were individual but the same. So using Lifeless as soldiers makes a perfect contradiction. Also, one of the Four Scholars that worked with Vasher is MIA. there have been lots of theories about where he is (Scadrial being one of them with an Allomancer Jak tale mentioning “men of stone” or something, but it’s entirely possible that he works for Autonomy now, finding a new way to create Lifeless.
    Kelsier: he is very much a “from a certain point of view” character.
    He does love his home evidently, as one of the missions of the GBs is to protect Scadrial and it’s interests. And I think that holds true to SA as well. Ignoring the fact that Sanderson is repeating a “recruit this impressionable young woman with a future” plot, they take different approaches with Shallan and Marasi because of this central mission. They know Marasi is already down to protect the planet. That’s why I think we’ll have more government interaction with the GBs in era 3: Marasi will set the stage for some covert help to go back and forth, and the GBs will possibly even have members of the government in their pocket.
    With Shallan, they don’t know if she’s gonna be down to only protect Scadrial, especially if Roshar becomes an antagonist to Scadrial. They have to work to make sure her loyalty is to the GBs before her home. Thus, the vetting process is much more mysterious, teasing, cautious
    And, of course, Kelsier’s Hemalurgy. He can’t use his Mistborn powers in his new body and Hemalurgy doesn’t work on him which says a LOT about Hemalurgy and Allomancy. How Allomancy is more tied to the body than it is to your spiritweb. Also, we know that Allomancy has to be a part of the Spiritweb, because Hemalurgy takes a part of that off. So is that a part that is only able to be activated if you are truly Connected to a body? Or does that part fade if you become a CS without a body? Some questions definitely arise.
    There’s more in here (we should see more aethers in SP 1, and they certainly are connected to Aether of the night) but I think this doesn’t need to be too close to an essay

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm I don't feel like Shallan/Marsai share enough in common to say it's the same plot point. Shallan didn't seem to be recruited because she was promising more like her life was a mess and they could control her easily - but also that she had powers they needed.
      I think Kelsier for sure cares more about Scadrial, like you said, and that factors into how they feel different. I also think he might've lost control of Mraize a bit since he can't visit Roshar physically.

    • @PonderingsOfPete
      @PonderingsOfPete ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bookborn yeah, maybe plot is the wrong word. They're both "promising young women struggling to find their place in the world." It's more of a vibe than a plot.
      The reason for individual recruitments is different, sure, but it feels similar on a base level. Like they both have this innate curiosity to them that drives them.

    I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I kind of preferred the wider Cosmere stuff to be a little more hidden. It’s not that I dislike crossover, I really love it. The problem is that that different magic systems get added in here and it keeps me from feeling like I can problem solve with the current magic system. Here, I really didn’t understand any of the stuff going on with the Aethers and Twin Soul despite having read Elantris and White Sand, and it didn’t seem to fit with either of those systems completely , or at least with my knowledge of them. There’s a scene in one of the Stormlight books where Hoid uses the magic from Warbreaker to make a doll come alive, though I hadn’t read Warbreaker at the time and I just kept thinking I’d missed something.
    Obviously Brandon’s got his own way of doing things and maybe I just need to reread his other books. I was super happy to see Shay and see them play with Soul Stamps. I felt like that’s a really easy to understand power, but it might just be that Emporers Soul is fresher in my memory (and it’s lasted in my memory a lot longer than Elantris)

    overall thou the cosmere things where fun. And I really feel it didnt follow Kelsier enough. The overall story felt VERY weak thou, We did not get many interactions with Trell at all. Not even close to what we got from Ruin in Era 1. The "twist" in the end just felt forced. And the "Lost Metal" part was way to small in the book.
    It will prob have BIG implications in the cosmere but it didnt get any room here at all. Overall I just felt that it fell very short story-wise to the other books from Era 2. Cosmere wise it was super-intressting and it makes me wanna read more Cosmere. Especially Kelsier stuff.
    Big problem with this book now thou is that even if you dont need the other Cosmere-books to read this you more or less need this book to read the others. Espeically when it comes to Ghostbloods and the rediscovery of the "lost metal" and them beeing mentioned in new publications.

I suppose I'm confused as to why the radically different perspectives from different books. I understand one person's terrorist group can be another's freedom fighter...but this is odd.
    I'm not sure I agree that The Lost Metal\Era 2 stands alone w/o supporting Cosmere knowledge. I have a friend who has *only* read Mistborn novels, and they had lots of questions for me about things/events that didn't make sense in the story to them. I think it's easy to treat them as Easter Eggs when you have all the supporting background, but when you don't they are non-sequiturs that pull you out of the story.

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh interesting. What parts confused them? Was it just that it opened the world so much? Or that they didn't understand how different magic systems work?
      As far as Ghostbloods, one theory might be that Kelsier has just lost control a little bit of the GB on Roshar - after all, he can't visit in person. So maybe it's more Mraize that have turned the GB into a different type of organization. Or, another theory is that Kelsier has written the protection of Scadrial into the very bylaws of the GB - and so he just cares less about Roshar.

    • @WJRobbins125

      @@Bookborn I suppose I'm still not clear as to what Kelsier's state actually is. After all I wasn't convinced it was him until now. :)
      For my friend it was mostly "Who are all these people, and why are they here?" Keep in mind (to the best of my recollection) everything in Mistborn to date was confined to Scadriel. There were some vague references if you knew about the other worlds, but even 'Secret History' was mostly tied to Scadriel and its inhabitants.
      Now we have half a dozen other magic systems and planets and characters basically in one book at the end of a (long awaited) series of books. Most of that in the last half of the book.
