Some of the things you missed were that the person the Cinder King killed to get his information about Roshar was a Thaylen who ostensibly would be from Roshar however this Thaylen man seems to have been from Silverlight which as we see with The Lost Metal is possible with two siblings (one on Scadrial and one on Roshar) being Silverlight Born but South Scadrian in Descent. This implies a History of Worldhopping in the The Cosmere going further back then we even realize. The place Sig Skips to in the Epilogue is heavily implied to be UTol which was the planet where the Sho Del showed up at the end of Yumi and the Nightmare Painter since the people of Komashi (their Sister Planet in the UTol System) were able to fly to UTol using a Hion powered Starship. The Scadrian researchers, while they could have had a Coinshot in the room, are heavily implied to be using Artificial Steel Pushing via Tech.

The Sunlit Man kind of felt like Cosmere version of Doctor Who. A guy wandering the universe shows up on a random planet with crazy stuff going on. He stays to solve the crazy problem they have. Afterward, he just moves on. The guy is very old and has a lot of experience with the technology of the universe and uses that to solve his problems (mostly). And the main conflict is caused by aliens.

Something I just thought of how Nomad saw more of the Cosmere than Wit. Nomad has been on the run for a long time seemingly jumping from planet to planet randomly. He stays on one planet for a short time then moves on to another. Whereas Wit/Hoid says he goes wherever he's needed. He stays on planets longer. He's been on Roshar for a long time it seems, enough to have a job as the Kings Wit steadily. He's either on Scaladreal for a long time as well or pops in and out throughout. So naturally Nomad would see more in a shorter time than his old mentor.

I thought that Aux was injured quite some time after Sigzil got the Dawnshard. During some crisis (which isn't explained), Sigzil needed a ton of Investiture, and the Dawnshard just consumed his spren to get it.
I don't think breaking your Bond will create deadeyes anymore after Stormlight 5. I think was an unexpected consequence of imprisoning Ba-Ado-Mishram, and that will be resolved in SA5. Sigzil and his honorspren will probably decide to peacefully break their Bond after the conflict is resolved, but then Sigzil later Bonds a highspren. The way I read it, it sounded like he met Aux in Shadesmar, not on a planet besides Roshar.
This may be happening at about the same time as Yumi. Sigzil says that he wasn't aware that were were Sho Del outside of Yolen, and I do not believe Yumi takes place right next to Yolen. Sigzil might have landed on the same planet they discover in Yumi.

I felt that Sigzil came across as a kind of Dark Hoid at the beginning, tonally. Yeah, Hoidish, but with a far more pessimistic, cynical even, feel that Hoid often accuses himself of, but doesn’t actually have. So it didn’t hit me negatively. It makes sense to me that he’d be both Hoidish and cynical, at least at the beginning, having collapsed into that while he was on the run. And how this changed and more of the Sig we know (tempered by more of the lighter, more optimistic aspects of his mentor Hoid) slowly crept out as the book progressed was beautiful.

I think he was in some kind of trouble at some point and he didn't have access to stormlight to power his surges and sigzil mentions that the dawnshard protects itself. So in a desperate moment the dawnshard forcefully used auxiliary to fuel sigzil surges because the spren are pure form of investiure.
And if we talk about sigzil's age . He said he is older than the greater good. And there has been some speculation that mistborn era 3 will take place around 70 years after wax and Wayne series. So it might be safe to say that this book takes place after era 3 and somewhere between mistborn era 4(the space age)

For Tress, Yumi and Sunlit in terms of timeline I think they're all the same Era of around Sixth of the Dusk maybe a bit afterwards. But I think could be any order given how separate they are. Each has elements that feel very advanced but I wouldn't be surprised if they were all within a few years of each other in that leading up to Era 4 timeframe.
Yeah I definitely agree on the Cosmere order of this one. The difference for me is less the number of references as the other secret projects and Lost Metal had a lot. But this one has Stormlight stuff in key narrative and character moments. Where Sigzil using his radiant powers, or recovering his oaths, and the importance of oaths in general just isn't well explained in this book it's all in Stormlight. And those aren't just cool side things like Design running the noodle shop, they're key to the narrative moments of the main character's arc this book.

Your question at the end got me thinking more about how Sunlit man compared to the other three and how I would rate it. I enjoyed all four, but, if I had to put them in order, I would say I liked Tress best, then Yumi, then Sunlit Man, and last Frugal Wizard’s Handbook. Yumi and Sunlit Man were about equal, but Yumi wins out by having more depth to it. Sunlit Man was action adventure and moved more quickly than I would have preferred. Tress maybe had an advantage by being first, but it was more than that. I love Tress, herself. I’m a sucker for that type of romance. And, I was genuinely tickled through the whole read - it just made me happy.

With the 3 secret projects that are Cosmere related, I get the sense that Brandon is very excited to get into both space-age Cosmere as well as Cosmere mixed books, as in characters crossing over between series. I struggle with when to read this book. But we also know about his promisel/ability to be "wherever he is required" which is probably related to Skipping as we see him just kinda conveniently pop up out of nowhere.
Sigzil just wants to run wherever he can. Skipping to a random location probably makes it a lot easier to hide and be harder to track.

So timeline: Sig meets Aux in another world, but Aux doesn't get injured until Sig is desperately trying to use some source of power, and his Torment latches onto Aux as a power source. This can happen any time after Sig gets the Dawnshard, so it doesn't have to be while he has it, but only after he holds it, however briefly. This makes sense because Sig can be with Aux, running from the Night Brigade, for decades before being cornered and unconsciously drawing on him.
Sig explicitly says Hoid held the Dawnshard longer and so was affected more deeply than he was. This might mean Hoid can't use the same method to siphon off that "canker" on his soul, reducing or eliminating the Torment.
I also believe Aux mentions "us Highspren" indicating what he is, and refers to himself both as a Knight and a Hero...and he also mentions his own oaths, which implies Spren can become storming Knights Radiant?! This is...very interesting.
PS: THREN-oh-dee. It's a type of song. It comes from Threnos, meaning "wailing" and Oide meaning "song". Very appropriate for a world full of shades of the dead...

Hi there. How are you doing? Sorry I had to turn on this video and then exit so quickly but I have not read any of the stormlight archive books quite yet so I admit I was really confused when you started talking about the references there. I am about maybe a fourth to a third of the way into listening to the well of Ascension right now. So, I will have to come back and watch this once I've read the first couple books in the stormlight archive series. I'm hoping to go on to listening to the hero of Ages for the first time towards the end of this month or the very beginning of November. I'll keep you posted on what my opinions are.

  • @harvellt
    @harvellt 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

My understanding is he carried the Dawnshard for a while. At some point while carrying the Dawnshard he done messed up and used some of Aux to fuel the Dawshard, causing the injury. We don't know how long between obtaining the Dawnshard and injuring Aux.
(Super speculation starts here) I think hurting Aux is what kicked off the abandoning the Dawnshard and his oaths, starting this long run we find him in the middle of.

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think that’s good speculation though and makes sense with the wider story. It seems the consensus is Aux was injured some time after getting the dawnshard and it as he got it, so that makes the timeline make way more sense to me

I can find the quote but what happened is that nomad gets aux, nomade gets dawnshard, years pass then something happened that left him without investiture, and the dawnshard make nomad involuntary use the only investiture available to him aka aux. It almost killed aux just leaving what we see in the book. Namad had the full aux spren for years with the dawnshard. The timeline given makes us assume that nomad gets said dawnshard between books 5 and 6 or sometime during the back half. He seems to be in lower 20s which implies it happens 15 ish years after where we are now. And if the is a 15 year time jump i think we can assume via the text we will see him take it up in the back half.

    1. I believe Brandon has said that Hoid was exaggerating when he said to Zellion “you’ve seen more of the Cosmere than me.” Zellion has seen different plants than Hoid because he doesn’t need a perpendicularity, but he hasn’t seen more of the actual Cosmere than Hoid has.
    2. We’ve also now discovered (unless people knew before) how exactly Hoid is immortal. Zellion outright said that Hoid cannot die due to the length of time he’s held the Dawnshard.
    3. I don’t believe it’s been hundreds of years. He said multiple times that he can’t go back to Roshar because he would lead the Night Brigade back to “people who love him.” Unless everyone who knew him became immortal, there is no way it’s been over 100 years. Also, the Stormlight time skip is only supposed to be around 15 years, so if this is that far in the future (hundreds of years) it is WAY past even SA 10.
There are 2 things that I had issues with in this book. 1 was Elegy. Her arc felt very rushed and a bit forced, and I just wasn’t that interested in reading her perspective (thankfully she didn’t have that much page time). 2 was just the improbability of Zellion not thinking about the events of SA5 once. Obviously Brandon can’t make him think about that for spoiler reasons, but we were in his head almost the entire time. It probably would have been better if this book came out AFTER SA5 so that we can hear his perspective on it rather than glossing over everything to avoid spoilers.
Overall, I’d give this book a solid 4.2 out of 5. It was a fabulous book in terms of Cosmere mentions and was essentially made for us fans who have read everything. That “Chasm Kata” and finishing “Bridge Four”….. chills. Very solid book and every Cosmere fan who has at least read SA 1-4 should read it.

Not WAY older, just older. Maybe the tech advancements happen really fast. We know that Mistborn era 2 is between SA 5 and 6, and their tech is increasing at a rapid pace. Maybe the shards get more active in giving people tech due to Autonomy’s conquest desires. Idk, the timeline is really confusing. The thing that tripped me up is Aux is repeatedly referrred to as being a Knight Radiant who "never betrayed his oaths" in his past. We know from WoB that Threnodite shades can be bonded similar to the Nahel bond, and so my best guess is that Aux is the cognitive shadow of Szeth, because if anybody would grant the power of a Skybreaker and never betray his oaths, it would be Szeth because that boy is hardcore.
And let's not forget it takes the equivalent of the Ninth Heightening (20,000 Breaths) to either skip offworld or Awaken steel, both of which are things present in Sunlit Man. Holy Investiture Batman that is a ton of power.

4:43 Kal is 19 - 20' ish in the first half of the SA. As for Sig he was already a failed scholar, taken as apprentice by Wit and travelled some years with him, I think. So I would say he is in late twenties in the SA first half.

My guesses about the timeline: Sig swears 4th ideal as windrunner (gaining plate), his spren is subsequently killed by anti-stormlight dagger, he then Bonds a highspren as a natural replacement retaining his flying (falling) abilities, which is why he still has pieces of both suits, he subsequently losses his surgebinding by holding the dawnshard and stops aging at 38, gives up the dawnshard, at some point "decades" after getting the dawnshard he decides to turn himself in to the night brigade, once he realizes they plan to turn him into an airtag his only means of escape manifests in him using up aux, probably not realizing what he's doing, this is why he hates himself for being naive, and also explains how he knew aux for decades before killing him.
Also hoid does have the skipping ability which he's exploiting to get into all the books, but he's not on the run from the night brigade, which is why sig has seen more of the cosmere.

How i wished i loved Brandon Sanderson and the cosmere! I DNF'd mistborn this year😔. It's like with Marvel: everything is connected and u must know details about a previous entry or u miss the easter eggs (i dislike Marvel, but was willing to give Sanderson a chance). Warbreaker and Yumi look interesting but it'll go right over my head. I'm missing all the fun at the party!

Honestly there are plenty of books that you can just read and enjoy without having vast Cosmere knowledge. Mistborn is one, considering it was his second series. Elantris, Warbreaker, Stormlight Archive Archive and the other secret projects as well. He's now starting to add more connections to the books but even Wax and Wayne his second Mistborn series is contained, despite the Stormlight Archive references. I was fine with it having not read Stormlight at that point.
Warbreaker and Yumi are great books by themselves and you should be able to enjoy them and not think about, 'Is this a Cosmere thing? Is that a Cosmere thing?'

I'm 100% sure Warbreaker and Yumi will not go right over your head. They're standalones. You don't need to catch the very minor references.
Also, Warbreaker is so early in the Cosmere that there aren't really references. Using your Marvel comparison, it's like not watching the first Captain America film because you think you won't understand it.

So... I actually don't think you need to understand this stuff! I didn't even know about the Cosmere until I'd read like 6 or more of his books. It's a fun thing to do, but all the books absolutely stand alone (and I'm positive since I have friends who read them occasionally and don't know anything about the connectedness!) If you didn't like his writing style though, I get it!

I didn’t know about the cosmere until last year. I loved memory of light and wanted to read more Brandon Sanderson so way of kings was recommended. I started there during the pandemic and ended up reading all of stormlight. After that I read Elantris and Warbreaker kinda got sucked into reading most of the cosmere. I think Arcanium unbounded is a nice place to start it is short stories about the different planetary systems in the cosmere with a brief overview of each series. Tress and Yumi are also good standalones to start with.

I had the impression that he held the Dawnshard while still bonded to his Honorspren, gave the Dawnshard back, abandoned his oath and then bonded Aux. Though I could be completely wrong

I don’t think so because they say Aux was injured because of the dawnshard…
