Sansa is one of my faves! It's crazy how much he's starved us of Sansa. We have that great sample chapter, but I think, After Sam, she might be the most absent these last 13years or so
I never asked for this crown. Gold is cold and heavy on the head, but so long as I am king, I have a duty. If I must sacrifice one child to the flames, to save a million from the dark...sacrifice is never easy, Ser Davos, or it is no true sacrifice.
I cried once while reading ASOIAF (don’t get me wrong- I was heartbroken a whole lot, but more often too shocked or numb to actually weep). It was this line that just broke me. Such an underrated quote, and one from the series that will stay with me forever.
Absolutely agree, it's one of the lines that will make me tear up whenever I read it. It completely captures how our bodies can age away from how we see ourselves. My mum told me she still feels like 'her at twenty-five' inside, not like 'a sixty-something year old lady'. And it also strikes at the losses that by necessity must come with living a long, full life. We must leave people and places behind in memories as we walk ever forward, but we leave parts of ourselves behind with them. I really hope there is an ASOIAF-afterlife for Aemon to meet with his siblings and niblings ❤😭
Glad to see the GOAT Wyman Manderly represented twice! My favorite quote comes from the Griffin Reborn - "From here, Jon Connington had ruled broad lands extending many leagues to the west, north, and south, just as his father and his father's father had before him. But his father and his father's father had never lost their lands. He had. I rose too high, loved too hard, dared too much. I tried to grasp a star, overreached, and fell."
How did I guess that your favourite quote would be from Jon Con? Seriously though, under his fat, jolly facade, Wyman Manderly is truly savage. For all that GRRM claims that Sam's his self-insert, I think he's Lord Manderly, hiding some deep cruelty under the appearance of Santa Claus.
"You have a great thirst for a small man." "Oh, I think that Lord Tyrion is quite a large man," Maester Aemon said from the far end of the table. He spoke softly, yet the high officers of the Night's Watch all fell quiet, the better to hear what the ancient had to say. "I think he is a giant come among us, here at the end of the world." Tyrion answered gently, "I've been called many things, my lord, but giant is seldom one of them." "Nonetheless," Maester Aemon said as his clouded, milk-white eyes moved to Tyrion's face, "I think it is true." For once, Tyrion Lannister found himself at a loss for words. He could only bow his head politely and say, "You are too kind, Maester Aemon."
This Beric quote from Storm- "Can I dwell on what I scarce remember? I held a castle on the Marches once, and there was a woman I was pledged to marry, but I could not find that castle today, nor tell you the color of that woman's hair. Who knighted me, old friend? What were my favorite foods? It all fades. Sometimes I think I was born on the bloody grass in that grove of ash, with the taste of fire in my mouth and a hole in my chest. Are you my mother, Thoros?"
“Lord Seaworth is a man of humble birth, but he reminded me of my duty, when all I could think of was my rights. I had the cart before the horse, Davos said. I was trying to win the throne to save the kingdom, when I should have been trying to save the kingdom to win the throne.” -Stannis the mannis
@@kevinhegwood615 it did sort of when it came to the books scenes like when Janos slynt was beheaded and Stannis slightly nodded. But that’s about it. Their relationship was awesome in the book. I really loved Stannis since he got to the wall. My favorite character along with ser barristan.
@@shytguy It's bizarre! I *did not* care for Stannis much in the show, but he became one of my favorites once I read the books. 💜 I've even collected a Stannis army for the tabletop miniatures game.
My favorite quote.... "We were King's men, knights, and heroes... but some knights are dark and full of terror, my lady. War makes monsters of us all." Thoros of Myr, AFfC
"The War of the Ninepenny Kings?" asked Hyle Hunt. "So they called it, though I never saw a king, nor earned a penny. It was a war, though. That it was." By far my favorite quote and speech from the books. Its a crime the show didn't included
@@tanimal3964 A friend told me a couple things they changed about Jaime's story and I was NOT PLEASED. honestly a huge factor that the show wouldn't be for me lmao
@@Bookborn I hated how the show presented him always willing to do anything for Cercei, even though in Feast For Crows he definitely outgrew their toxic relationship.
@@Bookborn Won't spoil what it is exactly in case you ever decide to watch it, but let's just say that (especially if Jaime is your favorite character) there's one line from Jaime in the show that would be BY FAR your least favorite line of the entire series. That line alone shows the writers had no idea what the hell they were doing, and didn't understand their characters at the most BASIC level.
@@newpgaston6891everyone's hatred for that line is how I know the fans are dumber than the writers... Because that quote (assuming we're both thinking of the same line) is 100% in line with Jamie's character..
So many great quotes come from Jamie and Brienne's interactions. I love the "Wench/My name is..." thing but I remember laughing out loud when Jamie jumps into the bear pit and says (I'm paraphrasing because I don't have it in front of me) "You are still a maiden I hope? Oh good, I only rescue maidens." He plays it like a quip but (probably only subconsciously at this point in his arc) he is concerned about her well being and just how much abuse she had to suffer due to his not taking the honorable route initially. That's the crux of his character for me, how he started off super honorable and just got so jaded over time, but then along comes Brienne, living the honor code he sort of convinced himself was never real and she re-sparks that need to be honorable in him again. I especially love one of his first interaction with Cersei after he hangs out with Brienne for a while and she can smell the honor on him and it's like a garlic to a vampire for her.
Just as Jaime is about to pass out in the bath, Brienne calls him 'Kingslayer' and he has to responds "My name is Jaime". I think that moment really hurt Jaime because he was finally able to open up to someone about what happened on that day in Kings Landing, but she still called him reminding him that everyone still thinks he has 'shit for honor'.
@@tanimal3964yeah, and everyone keeps referring to her by her gender instead of her name, including Jaime at first. Later he beats the shit of a guy in Harrenhall for calling her something other then her name and then the chapter ends with the man correcting himself and saying “Brienne the beauty”. Such an interesting parallel between the two characters
Favorite quote: "Once they figure a way to work a dead horse, we'll be next. Likely I'll be the first too. "Edd," they'd say, "dying's no excuse for laying down no more, so get on up and take this spear, you've got first watch tonight."
"And for the first time in hundred of years, the night came alive with the music of dragons." Have been tattoed in my heart since first time i read A Game of Thrones. What a fantastic line to end a book!! And yes, Catelyn is my Favorite POV. George did such a wonderful job writing such a complex female character that is Catelyn Stark...
One of my favourite quotes, and favourite characters too! My mother was a big GRRM fan, and I used to call her Lady Catelyn or Mama Wolf as a joke. I even embroidered a bookmark in House Tully colours for her. She thought it was a high compliment, because Catelyn did everything for her children, and mum lived for her kids, and then her grandkids. Now that I think about the similarities between them, I'm having a visit from the Onion Ninjas...
A lot of my favourite quotes come from Feast as well, such as Jaime's "I'll send him to you when he's born. With a trebuchet.", Brienne speaking to the Elder: "It is true then", she said dully. "Sandor Clegane is dead." "He is at rest." The Elder Brother paused. And a favourite of mine in Sam's second chapter whilst speaking to Aemon, "The rain feels good against my face Sam. It feels like tears. Let me stay a while longer, I pray you. It has been a long time since last I wept."
@@thing_under_the_stairs Bran's vision of the woman at WInterfell (likely a young Old Nan) kissing a tall Knight was a detail I missed on a first read, but absolutley lost it when I made the connection on a re-read. We know GRRM has a Dunk and Egg novella planned that will take place in Winterfell, so me just might get to see that romance happen.
Stannis: “A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward.” I’m not the biggest Stannis fan, but this quote is so informative when considering all of the ASOIF characters and their actions.
Stannis has SO many great quotes (whether you like him or not)! Either strong quotes, or even just comedic lines (which they sadly all removed from the show).
This is a shambolic ranking Stannis did not hold Storms End for a year, take Dragonstone, smash the Iron Fleet, batter Mance Rayder and make the hard march to Winterfell just to suffer this slight.
my favorite theories have gotta be the joke one. There’s one that says that Joffrey just had a food allergy and that’s what killed him at the Purple Wedding and that the Cargyll twins (from HotD/Fire and Blood) were actually switched at birth
"It all goes back and back," Tyrion thought, "to our mothers and fathers and theirs before them. We are puppets dancing on the strings of those who came before us, and one day our own children will take up our strings and dance in our steads."
I think Theon's last line in ADWD was the most triumphant moment in the entire book, and as for my favorite quote, it's probably "Power is a mummer's trick, shadow on the wall, and even a small man can cast a very large shadow." It just shows the theme of perception and power so well, and especially the context of it being said to Tyrion and Varys, the Spider, who says it just so perfect.
A favorite quote of mine is "Men's lives have meaning, not their deaths," by Gerris Drinkwater when he's trying to persuade Quentin not to enact his dragon-taming scheme. I think that quote really embodies the purpose behind GRRM's deconstruction of heroic high fantasy. It's not subversion for subversion's sake, but to highlight the beauty of everyday life that is being poisoned by the game of thrones and the honor codes that keep it going.
Robert, Jon thought for one mad moment, remembering poor Owen, but when the trumpets blew again and the knights charged, the name they cried was "Stannis! Stannis! STANNIS!" The build up paragraph to it was amazing. His arrival shocked me so much in the show. "I will have no burnings. Pray harder."
This and the Ned conversation w/ Bran “Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?” His father replies, “That is the only time a man can be brave.” Off the top of my head w/o digging …3rd would be “ Dance w/ me then. “ from Waymar. Some think it’s corny but I remember reading that as a young teenager and getting chills. Waymar was a spoiled, stubborn jerk. But he stood his ground in the face of death. When Will (I think) says he’s no longer a boy but a man of the Nights Watch I knew that I was going to be hooked on the series.
The most romantic quote in my opinion. I wish Lora’s would have been treated better in the show but after the showrunners were told he was gay they made him exhibit bad gay stereotypes
I don't know what others say, but I love that you appreciate the beautiful hopeful moments in A Song of Ice and Fire. Too much is made of its reputation as a gritty grimdark deconstruction when I find it to be a Romantic reconstruction of fantasy chivalry. I don't know if this is cheating, but I'm going to paraphrase a quote from Dunk & Egg, which I believe in context is a summation of the hopeful light that GRRM writes so well amidst the dark: "They are for me," he thought. "Why? Who am I to them?" "A knight who kept his vows."
I totally agree with you! I actually think there is a lot more hope in ASOIAF then people let on. There are people trying to do good in the series. Yes, they are failing often than not, but they are TRYING.
“Once at the Citadel,I came into an empty rom and saw an empty chair. Yet I knew a woman had been there, only a moment before. The cushion was dented where she’d sat, the cloth was still warm and her scent lingered in the air. If we leave our smells behind us when we leave a room, surely something of our souls must remain when we leave this life?” Chills
""Jaime," she said, tugging on his ear, "sweetling, I have known you since you were a babe at Joanna's breast. You smile like Gerion and fight like Tyg, and there's some of Kevan in you, else you would not wear that cloak . . . but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you."
Great quote and the next line is great too. "I said so once to your father’s face, and he would not speak to me for half a year. Men are such thundering great fools. Even the sort who come along once in a thousand years."
The great thing about ACOK is that it’s absolutely the high point of Tyrion’s arc. It’s wonderful to revel in his masterful leadership and self-confidence, and so wrenching when he had it all swept out from under him
“Aemon's blind white eyes came open. "Egg?" he said, as the rain streamed down his cheeks. "Egg, I dreamed that I was old."” Maester Aemon😢 “A reader lives 1000 lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”- Jojen Reed “Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”- Tyrion “When the sun sets, no candle can replace it” Loras Tyrell “I rose too high, loved too hard, dared too much. I tried to grasp a star, overreached, and fell.” Jon Con “In his chainmail shirt with a sword in his hand, Gendry looked almost a man grown, and dangerous. Hot Pie looked like Hot Pie.” -Arya Even as she was feeling sorry for him she was killing him, shouting, "Winterfell! Winterfell!" while Hot Pie screamed "Hot Pie!" beside her as he hacked at the man's scrawny neck.”-Long love the hottest of Pies
Aemon: “Kill the boy Jon Snow” Tywin and Tyrion: “You are no son of mine” “I am you, writ small” Bowen Marsh: “For the watch” Stannis: "It is not a question of wanting. The throne is mine, as Robert's heir. That is law. After me, it must pass to my daughter, unless Selyse should finally give me a son. I am king. Wants do not enter into it. I have a duty to my daughter. To the realm. Even to Robert. He loved me but little, I know, yet he was my brother. The Lannister woman gave him horns and made a motley fool of him. She may have murdered him as well, as she murdered Jon Arryn and Ned Stark. For such crimes there must be justice. Starting with Cersei and her abominations. But only starting. I mean to scour that court clean. As Robert should have done after the Trident." "I never asked for this crown. Gold is cold and heavy on the head, but so long as I am the king, I have a duty” “Pray harder” “It is time I tried another hawk” “We will free Winterfell… or die in the attempt” “I will not suffer such abominations here. This is not King's Landing."
In terms of great scenes besides the one you mentioned, the birth of the dragons in Daenerys X is arguably one of the best chapters Martin has written, only rivaled with scenes like the Red Wedding and Jaime's talk with his aunt, but those have two very different vibes to them. One is depressing and dire, one is calm, comforting, and relieving, but Danny's is powerful and ominous in the best ways possible.
By far, my favorite quote is "The world was simpler in those days, Jaime thought, and men as well as swords were made of finer steel. Or was it only that he had been fifteen?" Such a great representation of the whole series.
anytime dany thinks "If I look back I am lost" really hits me not sure why I guess its the persevearance and defiance against hardship. Not allowing past versions of you or the past in general lure you with nostalgia back to a place you know is no good for you. As someone who has struggled with substamce abuse this quote always resonated with me.
I’ve found the more I’ve gone back, the more I’ve fallen in love with Jon Connington and the entirety of the Young Griff camp. His “I failed the father, I will not fail the son” line gives me chills every time.
Briene is such an amazing character, I think George RR Martin has confirmed Brienne as one of Dunks descendants, hes also said there’s a few “Dunklings” around Westeros too, with another potentially being Hodor
Two quotes I really like come from a character that often flies under the radar for most people. Doran Martell. "Words are arrows Arianne, once loosed you cannot call them back." “Vengeance.” His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. “Justice.” Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, “Fire and blood.”
"Only one living kraken has never known defeat. Only one has never bent his knee. Only one has sailed to Asshai by the Shadow, and seen wonders and terrors beyond imagining ..." - Euron Greyjoy The power radiating from this quote and Euron's speech is just so great.
You're one of us now ! Following your ASOIAF journey has been a joy to watch. A lot of people within the fandom actually agree with you : Feast is the best book and Jaime, Catelyn and Sansa are cherished characters. I would also recommend Alt Shift X if you are interested in diving more into the lore. He is a big ASOIAF youtuber, he has a very compelling way of analyzing the books and he just met GRRM recently.
It's so fun to hear opinions from someone who hasn't spent the past decade involved in online ASOIAF discussions, like sure you may repeat things I've already heard but it still feels fresh
“Theon,” he repeated. “My name is Theon. You have to know your name.” - The Sacrifice, A Dance With Dragons. While Dance isn’t my favorite (Feast like you is mine) Theon’s ark is probably my favorite thing in the books, and as someone who watch the show first, this line was the first to truly give me chills. Also Cat, I think she’s one of the best characters in the series as well. I’ve heard so many people criticize her for the way she handles some things, but to me she represents a desperate mother who just wants what’s left of her family back no matter what, even if it means making decisions that aren’t exactly the most tactically sound. Personally I think she also represents what a mother should be to an extent, fierce determination to protect her children, trusting (to a fault when I comes to Lisa) and the willingness to be blunt when speaking about things that are important.
My favorites burns are from Tyrion 1) (To Janos Slynth)I'm not questioning your honor, Lord Janos. I'm denying its existence. 2) (To Cersei)Who you lie with is no matter to me . . . although it doesn't seem quite just that you should open your legs for one brother and not the other." But my favorite quote in general is from Doran. One to Sand Snakes the other to Arianne 1)“I am not blind, nor deaf. I know that you all believe me weak, frightened, feeble. Your father knew me better. Oberyn was ever the viper. Deadly, dangerous, unpredictable. No man dared tread on him. I was the grass. Pleasant, complaisant, sweet-smelling, swaying with every breeze. Who fears to walk upon the grass? But it is the grass that hides the viper from his enemies and shelters him until he strikes. Your father and I worked more closely than you know … but now he is gone. The question is, can I trust his daughters to serve me in his place?" 2) She narrowed her eyes. "What is our heart’s desire?" "Vengeance." His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. "Justice." Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, "Fire and blood."
We’re very alike. I’m a boy maybe half a decade younger than you. And somehow when I first read these books in high school, my favorite book was ultimately Feast. I read it the fastest and loved all the new voices. I happened to be in Venice at the time and felt like I was Arya running through Bravos. I’ve been telling people my favorite characters are Jaime and Catelyn for almost a decade now. Our worldviews are quite different afaik, but wow you surprised me each time with your choices. Love the video and your series!
It's funny I would say in general tyrion quotes are the best in the series - I think the hard thing with his is that my favorites often come in entire scenes of him talking, which I was trying to avoid
"“And me, that boy I was… when did he die, I wonder? When I donned the white cloak? When I opened Aerys's throat? That boy had wanted to be Ser Arthur Dayne, but someplace along the way he had become the Smiling Knight instead.”
obviously, it’s up to you, but I would love a video where you go through some popular a song of ice and fire theories and give your thoughts and if you believe them, maybe you could even throw in some of the weird ones too like Tyrion being the traveling fetus of Danny 😂
One of my favorite quotes is when Tyrion arrives in Kings Landing to be Hand and Cersei says, how did you trick father into this? And he replies with "if I were capable of tricking father, I'd be emperor of the world by now."
You are the first person EVER I've ever see agree with me about this. Yes, AFFC is the best ASoIaF book and, for me, this is mainly because I like intrigue and pscychology much more than the magical stuff.
@@Bookborn I still like the magic stuff (though more on a symbolic level if it makes sense?), I AM a RPG DM and part-time fantasy author afterall (in Brazil). But I believe the way GRRM writes believable politics is what elevates him from his peers.
Varys smiled. “Here, then. Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.” “So power is a mummer’s trick?” “A shadow on the wall,” Varys murmured, “yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.”
„I take no joy in mead nor meat, and song and laughter have become suspicious strangers to me. I am a creature of grief and dust and bitter longings. There is an empty place within me where my heart was once.“ - Catelyn honestly I still remember the intense emotions of grief when I first read this quote, gosh I can’t understand anyone who’s favorite character isn’t Cat
Bran seeing Winterfell for the last time in ACOK is a beautifully written scene. It’s the last paragraph in his last chapter in that book. One of my favorites in the entire series
The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I'm not dead either.
To me, SoS is like Empire Strikes back. It's the epic, far-reaching fantasy story that hits all the big action set pieces, love stories, plot reveals and ends with a perfect second act conclusion where many of our heroes are at their lowest and all order has been thrown out the window. But I'll agree that AFFC (and ADWD to a large extent) is by far the most interesting bit that we don't normally get in fantasy: an intermission. It's where the major plot beats take a breath and we get to survey the damage and to see the third act pieces starting to come together.
I'd love it if you reviewed HOTD next! It would also be fun if you reached out to some of the bigger figures in the fandom like Glidus and discussed theories and such with them.
Jaime and Jon are my two favorites. I love how similiar they are while still contrasting each other. -Theyre both the son of a Warden. -They both join a legendary military order only to realize said order has "fallen" and is just full of murderers and rapists. -both recieve hand injuries -both inherit a Valyrian sword from outside their family -both turn down leaving their order to become heir of their family. -they both become the Leader of their orders. -they both have an illicit love affair But when you contrast them -jaime is the well loved first born golden child, Jon the despised bastard that is barely welcome -the kingsgaurd is viewered as an honor, while the night's watch is a punishment -jaime's sword is stolen while Jon's is earned. -jaime is promoted through nepotism when his family fires the previous lord commander, Jon is chosen by his the men he leads.(Removed a show detail I slipped in by accident)
Holy finally someone who loves feast and Catelyn!!! Straight from the first cat chapter of her telling ned of Jon's death, you can feel the warmth of her character
“Ser Jaime?” Even in soiled pink satin and torn lace, Brienne looked more like a man in a gown than a proper woman. “I am grateful, but…you were well away. Why come back?” A dozen quips came to mind, each crueler than the one before, but Jaime only shrugged. “I dreamed of you,” he said.
Jon has got to be my favorite character and my favorite quote from him comes from the first book right after he leaves the Night’s Watch to try and help Robb after Ned is killed. “If he must perish, let it be with a sword in his hand, fighting his father’s killers. He was no true Stark, had never been one… but he could die like one. Let them say that Eddard Stark had fathered four sons, not three.”
The ruby at Melisandre's throat gleamed red. "It is not those foes who curse you to your face that you must fear, but those who smile when you are looking and sharpen their knives when you turn your back. You would do well to keep your wolf close beside you. Ice, I see, and daggers in the dark. Blood frozen red and hard, and naked steel. It was very cold." ~ ADWD Hands down my favorite lines from the ASOIAF books. And I agree on your #1 pick AFFC is my favorite ASOIAF book. Jaime is also my favorite POV character! He is masterfully written.
You made my day every time i see this ASOIAF videos. I also finished recently (last may) to read the series for the first time and I was so happy when i found your first video reaction, I was so sad that there was no more books to read but you made me relieve it once again, it's been an amazing journey and I can't wait for future contents of yours!!
4:16 Absoultley love that you are re-reading _ASOIAF_ ! I read it twice and am very tempted to read it a third time. In fact, I know I will. I really want to recommend you some re-reading podcasts, but I am reluctant to, because they don't just cover books spoilers you are aware of, but also fan theories that you are not aware of. And you are such a summer child on some of these theories, that I'd rather be it a surprise when _Winds_ comes out, or they might be dots you connect yourself on your re-read. If you are re-reading _ASOIAF,_ I think you should totall do videos about things you pick up on and that you didn't notice the first time.
I'm glad you're enjoying the series. I'd love to see so more top 5 lists on the series from you. Top 5 Dramatic Scenes (Red Wedding, Purple Wedding), Top 5 Character Duos (Arya and the Hound, Jamie and Brienne, Tyrion and Bronn), Top 5 Battles (Blackwater, the Wall), Top 5 Quiet Scenes (conversation between Tyrion and Varys), Top 5 Romances (Jon and Ygritte), etc.
"Words are Wind" quoted throughout ASOIAF by many different characters. I love the idea behind the quote because it speaks of action not words. I also like how Martin uses it to express how unreliable and unstable words are when left to the wind to carry and hold them. Words last no longer than it takes to say them like an reciting an Oath. ”Men are men, vows are words, and words are wind.” Iron Emmett says this to Jon Snow. Now if those words were to land on paper and compiled and stored into a book or in a document then those words no longer are Wind but power. Those landed words become stored knowledge. And as the saying goes "Knowledge is Power". This power is expressed as a weapon by Tyrion Lannister when he answers his questions to why does he read so much? "Well, my brother has his sword, and I have my mind. And a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone. That's why I read so much, Jon Snow". The Maesters understand that power better than anyone in this world. Most of those in this world are illiterate including many Lords. Literacy is a weapon weilded by the Maesters over various high Lords. And as Lady Dustin has stated "The grey rats read and write our letters, even for such lords as cannot read themselves, and who can say for a certainty that they are not twisting the words for their own ends? What good are they, I ask you?” I find myself using the quote "Words are Wind" and have adopted it when I feel someone is all talk and no action. I believe anytime that occurs it must be recognized as a great quote. And I believe George must feel the same since references it 13 times in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Now we just need George to land his words being carried by the Winter wind onto paper and compiled into a book.
One of my favourite things about Catelyn is what Lady Stoneheart foreshadows about Jon's future as he will likely not be a POV character after resurrection and will be a completely different character.
@@jeffreygarty8214 what you're missing is Beric is a completely different person pre/post revival, He talks at length about how he forgets things, and each time he's brought back he loses more and more of who he once was. Fire Wight Beric is NOT Lord Beric of the House Dondarrion. Same with Stoneheart, and likely same with the White Wolf
Jon's resurrection is fundamentally different to Lady Stoneheart's and Beric's, because his body will be preserved in an Ice Cell, and because he's a Warg who's soul will be preserved inside Ghost's body. The changes in Jon will come from the trauma of being dead, and for staying inside Ghost for so long, unlike with the other Fire wights who have seen a deterioration of their soul.
I agree 100% with your stance on Catelyn, and her being a phenomenal representation of motherhood! It's not only motherhood though, the way the entire concept of parenthood in general is written is SO good. The way Tywin as a father shapes and influences the thoughts and feelings of Tyrion, Jaime AND Cersei. Tywin as well, being a product of HIS father. Same goes for Jon and his father, Catelyn and hers... I love how parent-child relations are seemingly always taken into consideration by GRRM!
A ranking of quotes is a cool idea, haven't seen that before. One of my favorite quotes in the series is this one: ''She could feel the snow on her lashes, taste it on her lips. It was the taste of Winterfell. The taste of innocence. The taste of dreams.'' It's from the last Sansa chapter in storm of swords. Every time I read it, that line makes me think of every tragedy that happens in this book, it makes me feel the weight of all that was lost.
I'm a huge sucker for the quotes from the Starklings where they find connection to Winterfell: Bran: "The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I’m not dead either.” Arya: "“It’s just a sword,” she said, aloud this time . . .but it wasn’t. Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell’s grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan’s stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow’s smile. He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes." Sansa: "She wondered where this courage had come from, to speak to him so frankly. From Winterfell, she thought. I am stronger within the walls of Winterfell."
The Jaime and Brienne chapters in AFFC are some of the best chapters in the whole series. I absolutely adore the way George takes a lot of medieval fantasy tropes and motifs and spins them on their heads with these two characters and in such a compelling way
3:45 George wrote dozens of science-fiction short stories in the 1970s and 80s all set in a shared universe called "The Thousand Worlds". A lot of them are out of print or super hard to find, but a GRRM superfan made a compilation PDF with all of them in one place, and all of them combined are about the size of A Game of Thrones by itself.
Let’s Go! It’s so wonderful to re-experience my first read thru and reread thru with you. And to hear your great ideas as an insightful reader not influenced by the Show with all the changes and characterizations by Dan & Dave.
You talked about George writing short stories but he also started his career as a TV screenwriter! And he was (is) very good at it. I think that’s why he’s so good at writing dialogues and individual scenes.
My top quote from the series is "In this light she could almost be a beauty…In this light, she could almost be a knight.” from ASOS. Chills. But the "I dreamed of you" quote is probably a close second. I've also always loved ““Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?” “That is the only time a man can be brave,” his father answered.”” from GOT.
Your videos on this series are really tempting me to finally read it, after having been a show-only fan since season 3. It’s been very fun going through your ASOIAF playlist over the last week!
It's always so nice to see someone actually appreciating Catelyn instead of painting her as some kind of demon for daring to... **checks notes** be a woman who isn't 100% perfect all the time and is, in fact, a realistically fallible human? The hate she gets is honestly mind-boggling. Great video!
I feel like on my first read thru as a teen I definitely hated Catelyn but the reason George is a master is because of his excellent characterization and ability to instill empathy for any character as if they were a real person. As an adult reading through it again catelyn's chapters are something of the most touching to me. I cry just thinking about her conversation with her and Hoster at the end of his life.
17:10 what's crazy about this quote is that 6 Manderly men at arms and 2 Freys die in the ensuing fight which just leads me to believe that the Manderly men were just gleefully eating and then got caught totally off guard by the insanity of their boss lmao
Your TH-cam channel is becoming my favorite, especially when you talk about A Song of Ice and Fire. And what's more, I 100% agree with you about A Feast for Crows which is also my favorite. Thank you for another great video!
Hi, I've been watching these ever since the first AGOT video and it's been an amazing ride to reawaken my deep love for this series through your reviews. I love the character dives, I love the nerding out over how thematically appropriate and just plain heartbreaking and beautiful the quotes are, and indeed Winds or not, I'll always be thankful to George for this series. In the wait for Winds, which for me has been gentler than most (I read the first book in 2020), I grew a bit jaded from all the aggression and negativity surrounding this series on the internet. These videos were the ones to remind me of how ultimately precious this series is to me, and I'm so glad to see new fans arise in 2024. Thank you!
You might be more of a Sansa and Catelyn fan than Littlefinger.
omg ☠️☠️☠️
The foul truth
Sansa is one of my faves! It's crazy how much he's starved us of Sansa. We have that great sample chapter, but I think, After Sam, she might be the most absent these last 13years or so
@@nathanbanks5155 I don't believe all characters have been pretty absent these past 13 years💀😭
Westside Gunn X Bookborn was not a crossover I was expecting to see
"What is the life of one bastard boy against a kingdom?”
“Everything,” said Davos, softly.
This
Ugh this is why Davos is probably my sixth fav, JUST MISSED OUT top 5
Weird Pro-Ramsey and Joffrey take but ok. ;)
Davos is the best person in ASoIaF, and I will fight you for that.
I never asked for this crown. Gold is cold and heavy on the head, but so long as I am king, I have a duty. If I must sacrifice one child to the flames, to save a million from the dark...sacrifice is never easy, Ser Davos, or it is no true sacrifice.
"Egg, I dreamed that I was old." That's how to break hearts in 7 words.
I was so glad I had read Dunk & Egg before feast so that these words could have greater impact
It’s a double tragedy with him and Dany, the last Targaryens being so close yet so far from meeting
Haunting
Glad to see the GOAT Wyman Manderly represented twice! My favorite quote comes from the Griffin Reborn - "From here, Jon Connington had ruled broad lands extending many leagues to the west, north, and south, just as his father and his father's father had before him. But his father and his father's father had never lost their lands. He had. I rose too high, loved too hard, dared too much. I tried to grasp a star, overreached, and fell."
The GOAT Quinn!
Our law boy Quinn represents
Jon Con definitely doesn’t have a “reach for the moon, and if you fail, you’ll land among the stars” motivational poster in his room
That man fell hard for Rhaegar.
"You have a great thirst for a small man."
"Oh, I think that Lord Tyrion is quite a large man," Maester Aemon said from the far end of the table. He spoke softly, yet the high officers of the Night's Watch all fell quiet, the better to hear what the ancient had to say. "I think he is a giant come among us, here at the end of the world."
Tyrion answered gently, "I've been called many things, my lord, but giant is seldom one of them."
"Nonetheless," Maester Aemon said as his clouded, milk-white eyes moved to Tyrion's face, "I think it is true."
For once, Tyrion Lannister found himself at a loss for words. He could only bow his head politely and say, "You are too kind, Maester Aemon."
I love this part. Everything Aemon says in the series is pure gold.
My favorite quote:
“I pity them because it will not last. Because these are the knights of summer, and winter is coming.” -Catylen
honestly anytime winter is used it's bone chilling, it's such good phrase
especially from catelyn, imo, because she wasn't born in the north
This Beric quote from Storm-
"Can I dwell on what I scarce remember?
SO SO GOOD
THE KING WHO CARED!!!
Stannis the mannis throwing truth-bombs. I love Stannis and Jon.
..wish the show had been able to depict their relationship correctly
War makes monsters of us all."
Thoros of Myr, AFfC
"The War of the Ninepenny Kings?" asked Hyle Hunt.
"So they called it, though I never saw a king, nor earned a penny. It was a war, though. That it was."
By far my favorite quote and speech from the books. Its a crime the show didn't included
That speech was one of the most profound things I've read, personally. Stuck with me since I read it.
Common Bookborn W putting Jamie as number one character. Legit one of the best characters in fiction.
All the more reason to not watch the show considering how they butchered his character development.
YES yesssss this is why jaime and brienne are such a good duo
My favorite quote is from Varys about Stannis: "There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man."
Favorite quote: "Once they figure a way to work a dead horse, we'll be next. Likely I'll be the first too. "Edd," they'd say, "dying's no excuse for laying down no more, so get on up and take this spear, you've got first watch tonight."
I died laughing the first time I read this. Dolorous Edd is the goat
"And for the first time in hundred of years, the night came alive with the music of dragons."
Have been tattoed in my heart since first time i read A Game of Thrones. What a fantastic line to end a book!!
And yes, Catelyn is my Favorite POV. George did such a wonderful job writing such a complex female character that is Catelyn Stark...
What a banger to close out the first book
One of my favourite quotes, and favourite characters too!
My mother was a big GRRM fan, and I used to call her Lady Catelyn or Mama Wolf as a joke. I even embroidered a bookmark in House Tully colours for her. She thought it was a high compliment, because Catelyn did everything for her children, and mum lived for her kids, and then her grandkids. Now that I think about the similarities between them, I'm having a visit from the Onion Ninjas...
Yes, Catelyn is maybe too real/too complex for some but the real ones get her 🤪
@@Bookborn Absolutely!
It has been a long time since last I wept."
the problem with top ten quotes from asoif is that every time someone puts down a quote I immediately want to add it to my top 10 list
@Bookborn Just shows the quality really. Even though my favourite quotes by count come from Feast, there are countless others in all books.
ASOIaF fans getting FED
I'm so happy! I just found this amazing creator like a week ago!
I am devouring the content!
Whatever we can get while waiting for TWOW release.
This really is the Feast for Crows.
For once in our lives 🙏
"I dreamed of you" are the first words Daeron says to Dunk in the Hedge Knight, Dunk and Brienne are kindred souls.
The first words said to Dunk was “I could. If I wanted” from Egg
@@SapphireSolstice67 fixed
Brienne's also a descendant of Dunk, so it fits perfectly.
Yeah i've been told they are relatives! That's another reason why I went so feral when she gets his shield painting
@@newpgaston6891 can’t argue with any of that! I like Stannis just fine, but there are so many people who REALY love him!
This is a shambolic ranking Stannis did not hold Storms End for a year, take Dragonstone, smash the Iron Fleet, batter Mance Rayder and make the hard march to Winterfell just to suffer this slight.
Can't wait for the inevitable theory iceberg. Two words. Jojen. Paste.

Such cruelty to bring that up -.-
my favorite theories have gotta be the joke one.
That Caetlyn quote about Ned as she dies is SO sad!
I still remember how I felt reading it which was a mixture of horror, confusion, and sadness.
it was a straight punch to the heart just hearing it in the video! like it literally needs to be preceded by its own content warning or something 😂
Correction: as she died “for the first time”
I think Theon's last line in ADWD was the most triumphant moment in the entire book, and as for my favorite quote, it's probably "Power is a mummer's trick, shadow on the wall, and even a small man can cast a very large shadow." It just shows the theme of perception and power so well, and especially the context of it being said to Tyrion and Varys, the Spider, who says it just so perfect.
What was Theon's line?
@@ranica47 "Theon, my name is Theon, you have to remember your name."
@@KaiHung-wv3ul Thank you.
It’s also how the glorification of military conflict is ultimately detrimental to the citizens who are by and large the ones who fight it
Robert, Jon thought for one mad moment, remembering poor Owen, but when the trumpets blew again and the knights charged, the name they cried was "Stannis! Stannis! STANNIS!"
The build up paragraph to it was amazing. His arrival shocked me so much in the show.
"I will have no burnings. Pray harder."
Feast and Jamie at the top, Brienne appreciation and a Catelyn defender... these are the best kind of ASOIAF fans :D
Loras Tyrell: "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it."
love this one so much
This and the Ned conversation w/ Bran “Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?” His father replies, “That is the only time a man can be brave.”
Off the top of my head w/o digging …3rd would be “ Dance w/ me then.
Damn, the asoiaf content lately has been top tier
I'm getting greedy
Amazing, isn't it?
Has had a really long time to improve...
I don't know what others say, but I love that you appreciate the beautiful hopeful moments in A Song of Ice and Fire.
Too much is made of its reputation as a gritty grimdark deconstruction when I find it to be a Romantic reconstruction of fantasy chivalry.
I don't know if this is cheating, but I'm going to paraphrase a quote from Dunk & Egg, which I believe in context is a summation of the hopeful light that GRRM writes so well amidst the dark:
"They are for me," he thought. "Why? Who am I to them?"
"A knight who kept his vows."
Love this quote🥲
I totally agree with you! I actually think there is a lot more hope in ASOIAF then people let on. There are people trying to do good in the series. Yes, they are failing often than not, but they are TRYING.
“Once at the Citadel,I came into an empty rom and saw an empty chair. Yet I knew a woman had been there, only a moment before.
By far, my favorite quote is
"The world was simpler in those days, Jaime thought, and men as well as swords were made of finer steel. Or was it only that he had been fifteen?" Such a great representation of the whole series.
Ugh sooooooo good
anytime dany thinks "If I look back I am lost" really hits me not sure why I guess its the persevearance and defiance against hardship.
It's much more chilling when you realize he wishes he had been more like Tywin Lannister.
"Words are arrows Arianne, once loosed you cannot call them back."
“Vengeance.” His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. “Justice.” Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, “Fire and blood.”
One of my favourite chapters in the series
"Only one living kraken has never known defeat. Only one has never bent his knee. Only one has sailed to Asshai by the Shadow, and seen wonders and terrors beyond imagining ..." - Euron Greyjoy
The power radiating from this quote and Euron's speech is just so great.
"When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king."
I only wish this video were longer instead. Thank you!
Feast is also my favorite of the series! Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.
My favorites burns are from Tyrion
1) (To Janos Slynth)I'm not questioning your honor, Lord Janos. I'm denying its existence.
2) (To Cersei)Who you lie with is no matter to me . . . although it doesn't seem quite just that you should open your legs for one brother and not the other."
But my favorite quote in general is from Doran. One to Sand Snakes the other to Arianne
1)“I am not blind, nor deaf. The question is, can I trust his daughters to serve me in his place?"
2) She narrowed her eyes. "What is our heart’s desire?"
"Vengeance." His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. "Justice." Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, "Fire and blood."
lol Wyman's quote about growing up to be a Frey is 100% the best quote in the whole series
Yes lol and some snowflakes rly tried to gaslight her into thinking she supports child ab*se
Great video! No Tyrion quotes? “A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.” It’s a classic because it’s so good!
That boy had wanted to be Ser Arthur Dayne, but someplace along the way he had become the Smiling Knight instead.”
obviously, it’s up to you, but I would love a video where you go through some popular a song of ice and fire theories and give your thoughts and if you believe them,
maybe you could even throw in some of the weird ones too like Tyrion being the traveling fetus of Danny 😂
"Tyrek Lannister is a horse" is also great xD
@@FlammewarBecause it's TRUE
One of my favorite quotes is when Tyrion arrives in Kings Landing to be Hand and Cersei says, how did you trick father into this? And he replies with "if I were capable of tricking father, I'd be emperor of the world by now."
You are the first person EVER I've ever see agree with me about this. Yes, AFFC is the best ASoIaF book and, for me, this is mainly because I like intrigue and pscychology much more than the magical stuff.

Varys smiled. “Here, then. Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.”
“So power is a mummer’s trick?”
“A shadow on the wall,” Varys murmured, “yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.”
„I take no joy in mead nor meat, and song and laughter have become suspicious strangers to me. I am a creature of grief and dust and bitter longings. There is an empty place within me where my heart was once.“ - Catelyn
honestly I still remember the intense emotions of grief when I first read this quote, gosh I can’t understand anyone who’s favorite character isn’t Cat
"I am not without mercy." said he who was notoriously without mercy.
My favourite line from the books is when Jaime rescues Brienne from Harrenhall and says “I dreamed of you”. Chills.
While reading and hearing about the top 10 quotes, I wasnt crying. YOU were crying.
Ned is still my favourite in both books and TV despite only 1 book / season. It’s his legacy that runs through both which is so good.
I do not agree, but he does have the best quotes.
@@Liilliithh I’m not sure what all the great quotes are., but okay. who are your favourite characters?
@@Old_Man_LoganIII Danny, Sansa, Jaime, Cait.
"When the sun has set, no candle can ever replace it."
Jaime and Jon are my two favorites. I love how similiar they are while still contrasting each other.
-Theyre both the son of a Warden.
-They both join a legendary military order only to realize said order has "fallen" and is just full of murderers and rapists.
-both recieve hand injuries
-both inherit a Valyrian sword from outside their family
-both turn down leaving their order to become heir of their family.
-they both become the Leader of their orders.
-they both have an illicit love affair
But when you contrast them
-jaime is the well loved first born golden child, Jon the despised bastard that is barely welcome
-the kingsgaurd is viewered as an honor, while the night's watch is a punishment
-jaime's sword is stolen while Jon's is earned.
-jaime is promoted through nepotism when his family fires the previous lord commander, Jon is chosen by his the men he leads.(Removed a show detail I slipped in by accident)
woahhh, i never put this together! 🤯
There's no way this isn't intentional. Not sure to what end, but they are clearly reflections of each other.
Holy finally someone who loves feast and Catelyn!!! Straight from the first cat chapter of her telling ned of Jon's death, you can feel the warmth of her character
Your book ranking is pretty much exactly on the spot.
“Ser Jaime?” Even in soiled pink satin and torn lace, Brienne looked more like a man in a gown than a proper woman. “I am grateful, but…you were well away. Why come back?”
A dozen quips came to mind, each crueler than the one before, but Jaime only shrugged. “I dreamed of you,” he said.
Jon has got to be my favorite character and my favorite quote from
him comes from the first book right after he leaves the Night’s Watch to try and help Robb after Ned is killed.
It was very cold." ~ ADWD
Hands down my favorite lines from the ASOIAF books.
Greatly appreciated your clarity on acknowledging some things are objectively better, while other things become our subjective favorites. Thumbs up!
What good are they, I ask you?”
I find myself using the quote "Words are Wind" and have adopted it when I feel someone is all talk and no action.
I think a lot of people have the wrong idea of this because Beric had a way different energy and he was brought back several times
As a longtime asoiaf fan, watching your journey through my favorite fantasy series has been an absolute delight; thanks for sharing it with us!
Lets pray george can finish the series so we can all.share and enjoy those books too
I agree 100% with your stance on Catelyn, and her being a phenomenal representation of motherhood!
Parenthood is an underrated thing in asoiaf for SURE, george really captures the complexity of it so well and provides so many different examples
Oh I loved your take- I find it so interesting how everyone's takes are so different. I hope the reread is as fun if not more then the first read!
"No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair." No matter how many times I re-read the series, that line wounds me like nothing else.
A ranking of quotes is a cool idea, haven't seen that before.
One of my favorite quotes in the series is this one: ''She could feel the snow on her lashes, taste it on her lips. It was the taste of Winterfell. The taste of innocence. The taste of dreams.''
It's from the last Sansa chapter in storm of swords. Every time I read it, that line makes me think of every tragedy that happens in this book, it makes me feel the weight of all that was lost.
I'm a huge sucker for the quotes from the Starklings where they find connection to Winterfell:
Bran:
"The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I’m not dead either.”
Arya:
"“It’s just a sword,” she said, aloud this time . . .but it wasn’t.
He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes."
Sansa:
"She wondered where this courage had come from, to speak to him so frankly. From Winterfell, she thought. I am stronger within the walls of Winterfell."
Crap, this made me actually tear up.
@@PhebusdesTours They just want home 😭❤️
The Jaime and Brienne chapters in AFFC are some of the best chapters in the whole series. I absolutely adore the way George takes a lot of medieval fantasy tropes and motifs and spins them on their heads with these two characters and in such a compelling way
3:45
George wrote dozens of science-fiction short stories in the 1970s and 80s all set in a shared universe called "The Thousand Worlds".
We have the same favourite! Feats for crows is the MOST underrated book I’m so glad you love it
You talked about George writing short stories but he also started his career as a TV screenwriter! And he was (is) very good at it. I think that’s why he’s so good at writing dialogues and individual scenes.
MORE. PLEASE DON’T STOP. WE NEED MORE
My top quote from the series is "In this light she could almost be a beauty…In this light, she could almost be a knight.” from ASOS.
I can't wait for the hate I get when I drop my catelyn defense video but I will defend her for LIFE
I feel like on my first read thru as a teen I definitely hated Catelyn but the reason George is a master is because of his excellent characterization and ability to instill empathy for any character as if they were a real person.
Great work, enjoyed your contemporaneous review - just realized I was rereading almost exact same time as your first read lol
Thank you!
Feast is my number 1 too! Especially upon rereads. The character development was perfection.
