  • Let's install a boost gauge in the 300D and see if the turbo is working correctly.

Its a turbo, not a supercharger. Turbos do not create boost unless under load.

Something you might want to check is the chain stretch on the timing chain as well as the injection timing. I just replace the chain on my 84 in between the 11 degrees of change stretch and the pump being off by about six degrees I used to have a very sluggish diesel that sounded very similar to yours now I can spend the tires off the line

i did check for slop in the chain when I adjusted the valves and it seemed tight, but I do need to check injection timing.

MJM’s Workshop chain stretch has to be measured using the mark on the back of the first cam tower in relation to the timing marks..Trust me, I thought I was within the 4 degree spec, nope 10 degrees of stretch. You can't see the stretch based on the way the tensioner is designed, it is a locking fail safe type. I also agree that the boost pressure is too low, I run 12psi intercooled or 14 non intercooled(depending on my project..). I have a garret on the bench, let me know if you want me to upload a video on how to adjust the gate on it specifically

I have the 1987 300d with 165k miles the first time I drove it I was surprised
How well it pulled. For a 3 litre turbo it has good power. With the air box and exhaust on these cars you cant hear the turbo at all. Im considering selling it
To buy a older benz. Iike the older body style much better. But hate to sell mine because its %100% rust free with nice body and everything works.
But i enjoy working on them. I restored cars for 30 years so I want to
Do a nice candy over flake paint job. Great hobby cars.

I am a puzzled on you comment about a "solenoid" protection valve on the boost circuit. To my knowledge the wastegate on the turbo is what opens by means of a spring and diaphragm to bleed off boost in excess of 12 or 13 psi. Ami I wrong on that? I put a brand new turbo on my 300D when I found the boost was 8 or 9. It is now 12 and has increased power. No wastegate problem. I love your install of the gauge and you should leave it!!

The waste gate is what limits the boost but There is a solenoid on the line going to the Alda, if boost exceeds 13pso then the solenoid opens bleeding off boost pressure to the Alda which will then cause the Alda to cut fuel.

Can you squeeze some more power out of the screw on top of the injector pump?

      A little bit.

To get real power out of the pump you need to adjust the limiter rack this will make it roll coal as well I wouldn’t start messing with any boost before doing that boost is nothing without the fuel

My 1987 300d om603 pulls 13 lbs. For a diesel it pulls pretty good

please take all those keys off your key ring. That is so much weight hanging on the ignition tumbler.

You dont build boost in park. Boost is under load in drive.
Also power brakeing that car is a guaranteed way to destroy a transmission and overstress the motor. These cars are not hot rods. They are designed to be luxury touring cars. You see so many of these cars on marketplace . craigslist or wrecking yard because no one would pay $500 for them as parts cars or fixer upper. with bad motors. Been overheated and blown head gasket or bad transmission. And most of them have missing alda. Missing overboost. And or hood stacked. There is a myth going around people saying they are million mile motors. Impossible to blow up
And capable of 500hp. All which are false. 99.9% of these motors will never see i million miles. So many people say my car has over 500k miles but no one prooves it. In my 30 years of owning. Restoring and repairing the brand i think i have seen a few cars that achieved 500k miles or more. All which are on their 2nd or 3rd transmission. And 2nd headgasket and these ard cars that were highly maintained. And spared no expense keeping them that way.
