Funny thing MTV loved him. He was one of their very first artists played with the trio of videos “In The Dark”, “The Stroke”, and “My Kinda Lover”. By the time “Rock Me Tonight” came out, they did a world premiere of the video and played it in heavy rotation. They was detrimental to his career.
Actually, the ones detrimental to Billy’s career in 1984 was his label at the time, Capitol. Billy wanted to reshoot the Rock Me Tonite Video, only to be told by Capitol that there wasn’t time and he’d have to pay for it.
KILLING IT! Which is apropos seeing how apparently they were playing for a bunch of cadavers. Billy Squier should most definitely, positively be in the rock hall of fame. There are acts in there that don’t have the talent to even open up for him. The man can sing and play with the best.
Hahahahaaaa! "Cadavers" is right. Said the same thing the moment I saw the motionless statues just standing there during an absolute rocker like In The Dark.
Saw Billy with Def Leppard at The Omni in Atlanta 1982 March 18 on a Friday !!! Still remember outside hearing Def Leppard warming up with Rock Rock Till You Drop !!! No screens or back drops just a stage , platform above the drums !!! It was an AWESOME SHOW !!! Love Billy Squier no matter what anyone else thinks or says !!! Saw him first on American Band Stand !!! He played My Kinda Lover !!! I thought who the HECK IS THIS !!!! Loved him ever since !!!! Rock Rock Till You Drop Billy Freakin Squier !!!!!!!!!!!!
Billy Squire got slammed for one video of a great song. It's absolutely ridiculous how he got slammed. He is such an amazing song writer his band was fantastic as well. I wish I had seen him back then. I always had something I couldn't get out of when he came to Toronto. Thanks for posting these shows.
Did an opening gig with Billy and his band including his long time drummer (since the Piper days) Bobby...they were so cool and treated us like family. It wasawesome to watch him from the side of the stage. Sharly's Panama City Beach August 1991
Hearing and watching Bobby play makes my big toe shoot straight up in my boot, which is what Little Richard said about seeing Elvis for the first time!!
This was great! Billy Squier was my first concert in 1984. I still love him. I should say them! Alan, Bobby, and Jeff too! Its sad that they will never play as an entire band. Thank you for sharing this! ❤️
I saw Billy open for Pat Benatar, Foreigner, and Queen in a 15-month span in 1981-82. Killed each time. Keyboardist Alan St. Jon played for Who bassist John Entwistle’s solo band in the mid-90s.
Billy squier has 3 to 4 solid rock songs that have proven longevity “stroke lonely is the night ‘in the dark and you have your choice of many more plus a legendary Christmas rock tune that has been played on fm since early 80’s
♥️I can’t get it out of my head since I listen to it last night it takes me back to the days that we all hung out. How lucky I truly was thank you TP his buddy and sidekick❣️
The audience isn't necessarily rock fans. The same can be seen in the Beat Club broadcasts of Iron Maiden or Saxon in 1981. Older people or disco fans can even be seen.@@imarriedabrkfsttaco3737
Kate wilson, THANK YOU AGAIN for sharing your Billy Squier collection with us... I just watched your upload of his 1982 Detroit concert twice in 2 days and then came here hungry for more. I'll DEFINITELY be purchasing some of his music now... you helped create a new Billy Squier fan with your FANTASTIC uploads. 🤩
Thank you so much. It’s funny, I uploaded this so I could listen when I ran or went on walks. I never thought anyone would find it or care that much. Lol. I can’t get the video and audio to sync. I tried several times but then gave up because I just liked listening anyway and this was the easiest way to do it. He was so good live. It was so different back then seeing a concert. Just music. Not much flash. Just his guitar, band and his interaction with fans and music. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Truth be told, I'm only listening to your uploads too, on Bluetooth earmuff style headphones... so I TOTALLY relate to your original need for the exercise music. I'm certain that I have lost a couple of pounds listening to him both yesterday and today, for real. Yay for Billy Squier!!😎👍

Billy Squier was my first concert, with Def Leppard the opening act, about two years after this club show, wherein kids are sitting on the FLOOR five feet from the stage... props to the guys for performing as if in an arena. I love Bobby's huge Paiste crashes! But I wish Squier wouldn't change the delivery of almost every line of lyrics (ala John Arch [Fates Warning]).
This guy was really good, great songwriter, killer voice. When I saw the video for Rock Me Tonight, I thought for sure he was gay, which didn't alter how much I enjoyed his music but I think for the time, that might have been detrimental to his success. Still a big fan regardless
All his moves on stage are the same as in the infamous Rock Me Tonight vid but somehow it just didn’t work in that context. Squire’s career is an interesting musical bridge between the 70’s and 80’s.
Great songwriter, singer, guitarist. He could get away with the moves while the guitar was strapped to him. Without the guitar, I think he just didn't know what to do with himself. Super talented guy though.
There’s a video on you tube with Billy talking about what happened. He hated that video but was pressured to release it for MTV. It played in heavy rotation and the response was immediate. They quickly put out All Night Long video two weeks later but the damage was done. Billy dancing around in pink with those moves didn’t resonate with his guitar hero fans. Amazing the damage that one video caused to his career.
Absolutely. He had been doing those awkward moves years before. Luckily to him there was not much footage back in the day. Very easy to blame the director of Rock me Tonight.
The graphic listing the band member's names was incorrect. Kenny Aaronson is on Bass and the Guitarist backing Billy is Jeff Golub. The graphic incorrectly listed Mark Clarke on G, although he did record albums with Billy and did tour with him at times.
Its too bad his career kind of took a nose dive after 1985.The guy had guitar chops,an excellent band, and a perfect voice for that era.The only thing he had working against him was his awkward stage presence.
@Thomas Swan Billy told the “Rock Me Tonight” story on an interview how the director of that video encouraged him to use his moves on stage in that video. Just bad direction.
Wait, let me get this straight. Squier's top billing career was derailed bc he was gay... or appeared to be gay? WTF? There has to be more to that story.
Wow. How great is this? Real bands playing live. Billy was always badass
This is gold! Amazing! Take notice kids this is how it is done. MTV and the world owes you an apology Billy.

Love the HAAS supergroup...only one album recorded live but amazing!
