      @LandvaettrsLair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@skullLOVERGamez very well, but I must confess I didnt get to use it remotely as much as I wanted to...it is curently stored in a dry box and preserved from heat or cold. Then again the legos tecnics ball and sockets joints that me and my brother used as kids are still in a good shape and they did sustain quite a bit of abuse back then.

    I've wanted to make a stop motion animation for so long but I didn't know how to make it movable, I had lots of problems with the skeleton and the materials I would put on top but now I think I have a better idea of what to do! Thank you!

    Very cool.
    For those just getting started, I found that using 3-inch skeletons as a base helped me with getting proportions right. There are a plethora of action figure weapons that fit with them and inuse aluminum foil to build them up so that if a wire breaks, there is still some poseability to the puppet.
    I hope to be able to get this detailed one day.

    Very inspiring. I've been animating miniature poseable skeletons lately and they are almost impossible to work with for a variety of reasons. Your video has got me thinking about the possibility of making my own characters. Thanks! It's also good to see how much trial and error you had to go through; I don't feel like such a dunce now, given all me tries and retries!

    That is so cool! Years ago I made a puppet to use to make a children’s book I used the aluminum wire and a foam sculpting medium for the body. I remember making shoes from leather and got my mother to sew the dress. I had issues with flexibility. I only had to do a dozen position. I love the LEGO idea. It is brilliant! I wish I thought of that back then.

    • @LandvaettrsLair

    That's cool! Thank you for showing the whole process, mistakes and all, that is very helpful :)
    About making clothing - I saw a good method to make doll clothes. You wrap a doll in some plastic wrap and then put paper tape (like a masking tape) on it. Then you design shape of your clothes on top of the tape and carefully cut and remove tape from the doll. It gives you very accurate template. Hope it's usefull :D

      @LandvaettrsLair  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback! Sure, mistakes can be frustrating but are a necessary pain to learn, needed to show the process as it was. Thanks for the tip! actually knew about the technique applied for actual tailored clothing but for some reason never thought of using it in puppet making lol (than again I am novice in puppetmaking ). Thanks!

      Hey Chris, thanks for your longtime support. I haven't been very productive uploading content on the channel lately so it defenelty doesn't help the channel grow. But the slow growth its probably because I disabled the ads on the vids when I made the channel (my content is free and I wanted the tutorials to be accessible without ads hindering the viewer experience ;) ), but it turns out the TH-cam algorithm doesn't reference the content very well when you don't enable ads...I've just very recently enabled them maybe it'll boost the visibility a little bit... Thank you for sharing your experiments, I learned a lot from them. What I have learn about wires is that even aluminium wire can break easily if you don't chose the right one. It as to be as pure as possible, meaning no treatment of any kind. So hardware store aluminium wire is not the ideal one. You have to purchase them somewhere or on some website that is clearly marked "aluminium stop motion wire". Also, Edu Puertas made some tests about twisting wires and it turns out that the wires that lasted the longest are the wires that was twisted a maximum of 5 times.

    you done quite well with your puppet development.. I can so relate to the frustrations that your trying to resolve and come up with a puppet that works well enough.. I'm at a stage now where I'm considering learning to make mods and cast in silicone resin from sculpts, but it's a mind field of info to get through.. I'm just watching the pros working on Stan Winston School of Arts, there's a 7 day free trial.. they have hundreds of vids on there you can watch.. I never considered lego parts.. I wouldn't have thought that would work, especially the more weight you add to the frame of the puppet, it all affects the way the armature moves.. and rigging issues etc.. and with the plastic lego joints you ended up using, did you have any issues the more you used it, I recal buying one of those neca toys off eBay of Coraline doll and after a while the joints don't stay rigid, they lose strength, so I don't think it's going to be a long term solution.. but we can only learn and develop by going through the creative process of building and testing... no matter which creative choices we make, there's going to be ongoing technical issues right.. so good luck with this one.. even if you only get so much performance out of the little fellow, that's good, I can relate on the wire always breaking though.. I'm getting fed up with putting so much work into building a puppet with skin and clothes and then the ankle or the shoulder or the hip breaks and it's so hard to repair because we've covered everything over. unless you design your armatures with replaceable joints, so it would be easier to replace parts if / when they break...

    great video. you're very talented. I think the lego armature idea is way out of my league on a technical level...but I'm going to give it a go. I have just started getting into this hobby, but it's kind of amazing that so many people on TH-cam talk about wire armatures instead of building with individual lego pieces like you did. Did you buy those individually?

      @LandvaettrsLair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah i ordered the parts i needed on a site called "brick and go" but you can find various other furnishers. Wire armature is a good option to go faster provided the wires are numerous enough and joints long enough to sustain bending ( best for bigger puppets) but if your scale is a little bigger you Can also consider bionicles, you shouldnt have to fiddle as much with separte parts....

  •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Liked your video a lot! I have a few questions though: I saw you were experimenting with Modibot, how was your experience with that? Did you know you can buy just the ball joints from them (they have a pack of ball joints in their product section) and that way, save a little pain while putting the armature together. Additionally for more sturdiness, you could have used metal balls and rods, and make the joints yourself. Working with latex is not practical at all, why didn't you cast the body on a soft silicone rubber like Smooth'on s' Dragon Skin. This would have helped a lot in your character, because the result is pretty much like human skin, so soft and malleable. Thanks for the video.

    • @LandvaettrsLair
      @LandvaettrsLair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your feedback, glad you liked the vid! The modibot is great just not large enough for the character I wanted to build and I found the articulations a bit too thick, but i'm defenetly gonna use him to make another pupper of some tiny forest folk. The modibot was actually a gift from my gf when she saw I was having a hard time with my wires haha...I don't remember if I looked at the separate parts but I think I discarded the option because of the articulations width...I'll check it out again for larger puppet tho so thanks for the reminder. I know you can user silicone but in most tutorials I saw the animators used latex so I went with that. Also this was my first attempt and I just didn't wanna cast just yet, I still wasn't too confident with the armature and figured I would handle breakage/replacement better with a puppet mainly constituted of wrapings! I'll defernetly experiment with casting at somepoint! Cheers !

      Hi Thierry I use part of an old metal stand tool coupled with a bit of strong eletrical cable, you can see it at the end during the little animation tryouts. I used a strong magnet and a metal plate on his back (under the clothes) to Keep Bjorn airborne. Works good with me but it can become tricky in mid air and the Puppet does come undone sometimes during handling. For more reliablity I suppose its better to use square tubing fixations. Go check the links in the video description, especially Edu Puertas he's a professional and has great vids on rigs and fixations.

However keep in mind lick flickers are the enemy of the stop motion-er, be sure to use good quality DC powered lights and dont move your lamps while animating your Stop motion quality will greatly improve! i used to make stop motion with actual lego figures but i've never thought of using ball joints, maybe Bionicle ball joints could work too? • @LandvaettrsLair
      @LandvaettrsLair  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rossella! Hands are tricky. The "fastest" and easiest way I know is using several thin and souple wires (think aluminium or copper) twisted together at the wrist and separating at the palm. (Either twist them manually or Maybe you Can come up upon electric wires that are already made of smaller intertwined wires inside the insulation shaft.) I advice you to seal the wires inside the palm of the hand (i used époxy, other hardening pastes could do the trick provided they are reliable). I than rolled some thread around the fingers to bulk them up before I added the latex. In any case I suggest you do a bunch of spares because because the thin wirering make them notoriously fragile. Hope this explanation was somewhat helpful! Happy crafting to you!

    What you could have done is instead of letting the clay dry, you could have made a very neutral looking face but you would have sculpted different parts of that's still wet clay animated More expressive that way. You would have still have the same shape of the head but you would have different expressions to go along with it.

    • @LandvaettrsLair
      @LandvaettrsLair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i'm defenelty going to redo the head with a more neutral expression and find a way to make the mouths. The idea of the wet clay is interesting but would take too trouble and much time to animate for what im looking for, however i'm gonna experiment this non drying clay for muscles and other softer parts, under a latex skin for future puppets. hopefully it'll give a more natural bend for muscles/exposed limbs/extruding bodyfat.

    Did you try to use Fimo clay to make the different mousses ? Maybe should be good after to bake it and easier to sculpt it than epoxy (it's not sticky).

    • @LandvaettrsLair

      Salut Alison. Oui, faire l'armature en Lego prends du temps mais le personnage est très mobile et les articulations sont suffisamment jointives pour bien tenir lors de l'animation du personnage. Ce qui est également bien pratique c'est que sous stess les articulations se deboitent au lieu de se briser et il est très facile de les remboiter. Pour les bouches amovibles j'ai opté pour l'epoxy pour sa vitesse de séchage, et dans le mesure où je ne pouvais pas passer la tête du personnage au micro-ondes mon choix s'est vite porté sur l'epoxy (une fois humectée elle colle moins est très facile à sculpter). La pâte Fimo est probablement une bonne idée si le support sur lesquel tu les sculptés passe au micro-ondes!

      J'imagine que je n'ai plus qu'à essayer l'armature en Lego du coup 😁. Concernant la pâte fimo elle passe au four. Cela dit je fais les bouches et les paupières en plastiline car pour un sourire par exemple, cela permet de l'agrandir en le sculptant petit à petit directement sur le visage et ça permet aussi de lisser les jointures. Le restant de la tête est en latex. Cela dit toutes les techniques et conseils sont bons à expérimenter et donc merci encore !
