  • According to the plot, in the near future there is a special technology that allows both partners to give birth to a child with the help of an artificial womb attached to the body. Rachel and Alvy decide to experience the newfangled procedure for themselves. This step will be the beginning of a big test and a potential crisis in their relationship.

One of the drawbacks I can see to this is that its all being done to keep the productivity of the parents intact and not disrupt the corporate work environment. There are some benefits to the parents but the technology was developed to benefit the corporations that care more about the productivity of their employees than children.

Yes! It really bothers me that so many people in the comments think a pod is a good idea. Pregnancy and birth are way more complicated than they are assuming. I am certain that raising a baby in a pod would seriously inhibit its mental growth. Bonding with the baby needs the chemical processes and proximity that in utero provides. And to go back to the productivity thing---older children would still disrupt that. If the parents cared for their kids, they would call in to work to when dealing with a sick child or a disciplinary issue that cannot wait. In the movie, these kids are being raised by robots. They would be mentally and emotionally incompetent because of the lack of human feedback and love. Actual love. Love is important.
Also, positive human population growth requires a cultural shift towards pregnancy and child-rearing being viewed positively. This movie shows the opposite---most people can't even be bothered to have a baby naturally, or do anything with it.
Ultimately, this movie is a dark satirical warning and the majority of the commenters seem to have utterly missed that, which is quite disturbing.

you both are missing the part where male emperor penguins hatch the egg, while the mother goes on a long journey to acquire fish for both husband and chick. And these aquatic birds seem to be fine and very bonded with their chicks, as most avian species are. It comes down to the involvement of the parents to incubating, turning, and nurturing the embryo chick.
Also, this is just a movie which explores a complex question regarding corporate predation and societies shifting culture to productivity above living. The mother and father endure a flurry of emotions during the incubation pod - from rejection, to jealousy, fear, elation. At the end both parents come to the terms with their partner, they bond over this new process, they learn more about the other person and engage with the others interests. This is how relationships are supposed to work, to cohabitate and come to terms within reasonable means. And it is okay to disagree with some of the arguments the film has made or the parts of the narrative, but its not about making you think a certain way, it's about perceiving what we have in our current culture. Both characters had a lot of growth and they became closer through this process.

It would be much better to not let Marxism off the hook by blaming corporations and recognizing it's feminism. The mother wants to maintain her productivity to the likely detriment of the child. Children are already being viewed as commodities whose status as human is solely dependent on the female's will. Corporations have nothing to do with that.

Pregnancy and birth are massive shocks to a body. There are so many health issues that even a normal pregnancy can inflict on a person that last the rest of their lives, that having a pod to take over would improve people's lives greatly. Just because it was made by a corporation doesn't mean anything in itself; many of the greatest things we have were built by corporations purely for extra profit. Did you know that the coffee break was only allowed because it improved worker's energy?

Prospective scientist here, these pods are actually a great development, and scientists in the real world are actually working on functioning artificial wombs. Pregnancy and childbirth are incredibly strenuous on the body and can cause considerable damage. So much so that they were the a leading cause of death in women for most of our history. And an artificial womb or a pod like this could also go a long ways in preventing preterm labor, and early accurate detection, and probably treatment, of birth defects and the like. These pods would/will be a good thing, for both the mother's and baby's health. And with any luck the first prototypes will become available within the next couple of decades.

No acrimony whatsoever, but wait to work a bit in the field before swaing into the validity of the concept.
This topic has been thought for centuries, and its been under development for decades in some companies.
(IE: Juno womb, wombath, among others, merely talking from some experiences I've had in Eindhoven).
Its promising as a concept, specially for the thousands of monthly cases worldwide, where the child is unable to develop, leading to unnecesary premature deaths.
Preserving the mother's health, and removing childbirth risks, its another GREAT plus. But can't state bluntly the whole process is / will be a good thing.
The system comes with a lot of downsides, and currently a lot of unknowns to determine the feasibility.
1- Its not just a single project, its several multidisciplinary projects mashed into one. Being few steps before being able to produce "synthetic" life forms, it comes with all the ethics, and complexities of it which are currently not being addressed (Its noted, but not being developed upon in Europe. The FDA just took action a few months back but they're not working on it atm either, this will take several decades to settle...).
2- We haven't achieved hormonal balancing. Its good enough to treat some cases and even perform transitions. But its nowhere near the capacity to sustain the development of a human being.
3-Collaterals and other future known yet indeterminate problems, which will arise during the implementing this approach. Replacing birth for a share of the population is not risk free; new diseases, birth defects among others. It adds another field of liabilities which is not defined and not many people will be willing to sign for.
It does have some benefits, but currently the scale is tilting towards the field of uncertainties which could yield very detrimental consequences.
Its a field that still needs a lot more digging in the jurisdictional aspect, social and ethical. But its refreshing to see people with motivation to develop the field further! At least we got some coverage for the science bits :)
      Success met de studie!

Sure but Fathers have experienced the development of their children this way and still maintain great bonds with their children. (Speaking as a Daddy’s girl)
Speaking as a mother, those little flutters you feel are cute at first, but I almost died having my kid in the third trimester…so I’m all for a capsule.

Oh well when you put it that way it's totally worth endangering your wife's health for the novelties of pregnancy.
Listen I get that it's fascinating and cool to see, but it's also extremely risky to undergo. Any technology that reduces risk and suffering should be on the table, and a pod is one hell of an excellent way to do that.

If I can have the pod....I would love it ! I take daily medications that I cannot take while I am pregnant. Surrogacy would be the only route for me to have a child which is fairy expensive. If I had a pod..I would do it in a heart beat. This pod would help women that want children that are over 40 as well.

The capsule sounds like a great idea really. Unplanned pregnancies would go down so less unwanted kids in the welfare system. Also, anybody with the money could have a safe way to have a child and gender of the parents doesn't matter. I'm sure they also screen for genetic problems so like harlequin babies don't happen.

I could see the capsule idea proposed as a response to the abortion debate, particularly if they figure out how to transfer a fetus/unborn baby from a womb to a capsule.

    • @tablescissors67
      @tablescissors67 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

No. We already have adoption as an alternative to that, women who abort do not want a child with a genetic connection to themselves or the male whom impregnated them to exist in many cases (for various reasons) and not exclusively bc they do not wish to give birth.
Furthermore, your governments want the free fetal tissue that comes with abortion, so they have no interest in dissuading people from aborting their fetus.

How much more devastating would it be not connected to the mother physically ever? What are the psychological implications of the womb experience? Just becuse we don't remember it doesn't diminish the significance.

Honestly the pod idea is great. Ik now we all like to make everything natural but aren't ya'll using a phone to watch this ? If there's some technology to make your life easier then why not take it. And for your argument "but women have been doing this for centuries", yes your ancestors sh** in open space cuz they didn't have sanitary washrooms, they didn't have fridges but you use them, they didn't have electricity, fans, ac, elevator, light, tv, phone. If you're so natural why not live in cave and haunt animals with bows and arrows, oh wait but bows and arrows are also technology. See, the thing is humans always been using tools and creating tools, it is a part of oyr nature, it is natural. The pod is amazing. It saves eomen from pain and discomfort of caring a baby, gibes her more time and energy to engage in other works, opportunity for dad or other family members to spend time with the pod snd finally ensuring the safety of the baby.
