  • Do South Indian Christians and Muslims have Middle Eastern ancestry? Politics and society in South India and Sri Lanka have long been characterized under racial, ethnic and religious division, and today, we're going to be discussing some of the various ethnoreligious groups of Southern South Asia, such as the Saint Thomas Christians, Sri Lankan Moors, Burghers and others!
These are going to be some sensitive subjects we're going to cover today, so I'm going to be as objective and non-biased as possible. Let me know your thoughts on these South Asian ethnic groups in the comments below! Thanks for watching!

Syrians Christians and Jews were massacred when Portuguese started colonization of Southern India. Syrian Christians split into two Catholic faction which owned alligience to Roman Pope while the other group owned alligience to Syrian patriarch with keeping their independent Indian identity.
I'm a Syrian Christian, we are Malayalis and Indians.

kmajinad That is what European colonialist arrogance is like. They insult the Indian with trinkets for trade and prove one more time that the church in Rome is even more dangerous than the empire that preceded it. The St.Thomas Christian's have a much more authentic Christianity than the hedonistic, romanized european version.

@thomas samson You're humble? Claiming to speak for Jesus? Don't bother with me unless you do more than just attack. I actually stated historical documents. If this was court you would loose big. Not once did I speak on individual salvation or character unlike you. Your inclination towards personal attacks as opposed to making statements that are in anyway rooted in reality is clear. I know and read history and not just one side. Based on your response you react based on ego and ego alone. Good luck with that and trying to get past those pearly gates. If you're mad because you didn't like me stating that Rome has rewritten history then stick to that not attacking personal character. Jesus is not you or me so don't act like everything that comes out of your mouth is from God Himself. Show some humility. You're the only one doing any castigating. I've read the good book and I know I'm flawed. I don't get that from your ego driven emotionally charged and thoroughly lacking in tact and any semblance of fact answer. Do yourself a favour and don't assume God's favour. St. Thomas along with the promised Comforter and no other was responsible for Christianity in India and no other institution. That statement should not upset any Christian unless they care more about their church than the Gospel of Jesus itself. God bless you but do not bother with me unless you show more tact, humility and love.

@thomas samson Sounds like the only hatred here is from you. Remember they called the apostles all kinds of names for stating facts. Your attempt at character assassination is going no where with me. I welcome God's judgement over your blind hatred any day. The difference between you and me is you assume you speak for God and I don't. I asked you not to bother with me if you can't be Christ like and not only did you ignore that but as anyone who lacks truth you attack my personal relationship with God Himself thinking you will be with such arrogance. God is love so love don't assume your status with Him is more than it is.

I mean there were so many trade routes in that southern region of India. In ancient times, India had so many trade relations with Jews, Arabs, Syrians, Chinese, Greeks etc.
The first Muslim mosque built in India was in Kerala in the 7th century.
The first European to discover India, was when he arrived at the shores of Kerala.
Portugues Christian missionaries arrived in Kerala and Goa.

Then they got evolved to indian tradition. After many years then came influence from chaldean church and then came east syriac (aramaic ) litergy.
At present this caste is splitted into many churches

I'm a Indian Hindu, I grew up in Eastern India kolkata, I saw so many European nuns coming to churches nearby every year,
They were really sweet and friendly, I was a child, didn't used to speak English then,
Though i could understand them by their smile and fond gestures. They used to come to the churches for any reason.
I grew up in a orthodox Hindu family, we have a temple in the house its like having a private church in your backyard
The wonderful thing was, my parents never asked me to stay away or not to talk with those nuns, they never restricted me from going inside the church with them, I was a child and never really had any love for any Jesus or shiva but I treasured those cookies they used to give from church for free, for whatever reason it was Really beautiful memory I just remembered watching this video.

@@Dragon_Ball_Z70 I'm familiar with the indian church they are our sister churches and I've revived quarban there. One thing to keep in mind is the history of why some people are saying "christianity is the white man's religion " although I know it isn't. I as a foundational black American can't ignore the reason many of my back ground believe that . It's the way the religion had been twisted and how white supremacist used to dominate, enslave, subjugate and pacify many black people with their devilish white superiority complex intentions. Unfortunately the western church was in lock step with it . We as orthodox Christians know that our tradition had nothing to do with that - especially us afro asian rooted churches. But what was done in the name of our faith has had a ripple effect that even lasts till this day and age. We have to dismantle such a demonic ideology as white supremacy expose and do away with it. And not ignore the effects its had. The earlier Christians were the ancient examples of how we should live . If you have any questions about this let me know. The propaganda isnt our fault Christianity didnt start as "white dominsted " to begin with

An underappreciated truth; the original Christian peoples came out of the Middle East and North Africa long before it even got a solid foothold let alone becoming the dominant religion in Europe. When Christianity was dominant and spreading in the Middle East and North Africa (up until the rise of Islam), most ethno-European cultures were still practicing paganism.

Why didn't "muh ancestors" preserve their culture even though India did through a nationwide Muslim occupation (Mughal) and then a Christian one (British)? Not that it fucking matters, go worship some tree spirit goddess you racist fuck

This is not "truth." The first Christians were NOT Arab, they were Levantine, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, and Anatolian. Some of these peoples are "European" while others are mostly West Asian (genetically). Whether or not these people are "brown" depends on who you ask. Ask a northern European, then yes they are "brown." Ask someone from India or Arabia, and most of these people are "white."
"Brown people" is a mostly-arbitrary and ridiculously stupid qualification. Many southern Europeans are more "brown" than West Asians, especially before Islam. By the time these people became "Arab" (as in their first language was Arabic), they were no longer Christians.

    • @sim3onbk2
      @sim3onbk2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Sorry, it just bothers me when people claim that pre-Islamic Levantine and Mesopotamian people were Arab. Arabs heavily erased their identities, with a relatively small number of Assyrians/Chaldeans, Mandeans, Arameans, Copts, Maronite/Phoenicians, and Samaritans left. Then, of course, there's the Jews, but that's a different discussion because Jews moved around so much.
Whenever people say "Jesus was an Arab," I get it that they're saying he wasn't European (which is of course true), but what they're saying is blatantly false. He was an Aramaic-speaking Jew (as in genetically/ethnically Levantine). He had almost nothing to do with the people of Arabia, who took over the region 600 years later, mixed with the existing population, and imposed their language/religion on the locals.

Many of these Kerala Christians (and some Hindus) moved to the Fort Worth/Dallas area, and I became acquainted with them at the Boeing plant in Irving. Their surnames were commonly adapted to the English variant (Thomas, Abraham, James, etc.), not uncommon for any immigrant group. Some in Kerala still "practice caste" among themselves.
They refer to the Nestorian church they are associated with as "The Church of the East"; not sure if it is the same as the Mar Toma Syrian Church. The appearance of them and others from Kerala seems quite different from other Dravidians, probably from the thousands of years of contact with the Middle East. Some have claimed that the words for ivory, apes, and peacocks in the Biblical passage about Ophir are the same in Hebrew and Malayalam, but has that been verified? Apparently, the ancient traders used seasonal winds when sailing between Kerala and he Middle East.

Kikuyu Kiiru That's if you're using the broad "racial" categories of Black, white, east Asian, etc. I'm using it in the same way Masaman does, to refer to more narrow populations, i.e. ethnic groups. Most White Americans are entirely white, sure, but they tend to be a mix of European ethnic groups. White Europeans, meanwhile, tend to have a little admixture from each of their neighbors, as do most African and Asian populations.

I'm a Syro-Malabar Catholic and the history roughly goes like this:
St.Thomas came to Kerala by sea in A.D 52 and established the "7 and a half churches".
The Church came in contact with East Syriac bishops and adopted the East Syriac liturgy.
The Portuguese, visited India, colonized Goa and tried to bring the Church to Catholic Church and still retaining the liturgy which was opposed by the minority and the Church was split for the first time at Coonan Cross Oath in 1653.
The majority 'Pazhayakoor' went on to make communion with the catholic church and the other side 'Puthenkoor' went to be with the Church of the East and that faction, after 10 years adopted West Syriac liturgy and went on to become the Malankara churches.
The Pazhayakoor faction is still in communion with the Catholic church (The sui iuri church called Syro-Malabar Catholic Church) but a small group in the city of Thrissur went back to the Church of the East(Assyrian Church).
Currently, Malankara churches use the West Syriac liturgy while Syro-Malabar Church and the Assyrian church(Church of the East) use East Syriac liturgy.

A small correction! There was no language called Malayalam in 52AD. It was branched off from Tamil only around 7-8th century AD.

In Old Malayalam, we find words such as Irunnu, Vannu etc and the similar use of the consonant 'Nja' as in Modern Malayalam. Proto-Malayalam is indeed the right word and NOT Tamil as known by all linguists.

Myself iam a Syriac Orthodox Christian from malakara(kerala). Most of our rites and rituals are a mixture of middle eastern Christian , native hindu and some Jewish traditions. Syriac is used along with native tongue in prayers and chants. There is a saying that "Marthoma Christians are Christians by religion and Hindus by rituals". It's so evident in marriages and other celebrations. Iam proud of that history and heritage we inherited and saddened that most of it is getting drained away due to Western/ Latin inflence. The uniqueness and beauty of Syrian rite should be preserved. The community is definitely one of oldest in the world of christiandom . And as far as the genetics is concerned it is definitely a mixture of Dravidian, Indo-aryan and middle eastern ancestry taking into consideration the amount of trade relations, conversations and successive migrations the land have witnessed.

    • @Geevpaul

King Kong Hinduism as we know today was different from the indigenous Indian religion before the Aryan migration to the sub - continent. The deities and rituals differ all across India even in the lines of cast!! But it's collectively called Hinduism (I don't know how apt the term really is). So you can call it by that name I guess.
