Five Guys chain restaurant has the old classic malt flavor milkshake which is good. Although not on the menu they can add bacon to it which in my opinion is a good combination
Elvis must have loved the convenience of having the drive-in food right across the street from his home! Just like Elvis to mingle among the common people even though he was a star by then. He was so down to earth and humble. Elvis never forgot his beginnings and they remained a part of him. Sorry to see the polar bears go!
Elvis used to occasionally rent out the entire fairgrounds amusement park and invite members of the "Tankers" which was a local fan club that was organized by Gary Pepper of WHBQ. I was amember of this club but never got to go to one of these events. A friend of mine did and said Elvis was a great host. I still have some of the papers from this time. When Elvis was in the Army, he was in a group that operated tanks, so that is where the name came from.
That’s so cool you were a member! I’ve created six videos so far about Elvis & Gary Pepper’s friendship and Gary’s contribution to fans. Here are those videos if you’re interested: th-cam.com/play/PLpbgiT3hsfNbYyeqaWK8Gl9o4D2VFNVM8.html
I decided to re-read the book Ginger Alden wrote. I stopped by to see the Polar Bear custard shop she referred to when she met Elvis at 5 years old in the early 1960s! ❤️
It's a shame the original business wasn't preserved. Historic businesses that are well maintained and continue in business add so much to the richness and culture of a community.
Thanks for the memories Ashley. It's bittersweet when you think of these places are slowly fading into memories. I want to thank you for being my eyes and ears in Memphis for a while now and surprisingly it has now become several years since I first become a member of your channel. Appreciate your work and help for keep the Elvis legacy alive! ⚡
Sort of sad to see such legendary places fade into the history books. I think the saddest part is seeing the downward spiral of a once vibrant area of Memphis. Thanks for all you do Ashley! You hard work is much appreciated. Hope you are feeling better.
I remember that Custard place it was across from the Midsouth Fair Grounds (before it was called liberty land ) I was about 5yrs old and every time We passed by my parents would stop and get us ice cream, my favorite was lemon Custard. Now when we have ice cream Sundays at Church I make Custard. Ashley thanks for the memories of this place.
Ashley, I grew up in Whitehaven Tn. Within walking distance of Graceland. We saw Elvis and his guys on motorcycles riding up and down Hwy 51 ( Elvis Presley Blvd) we would wave and he would wave back. My friends and me were into the Beatles then. We would be on our way downtown Memphis to dance at a teenage nightclub. I moved up to the farm in 1967 Memphis was getting to bad. I love Elvis’s singing now. That is all i listen to in my car Sirius XM.
I love these videos. It's sad that when you think of it, most of these places Elvis would visit are slowly fading into memories. Thank you over and over again for bringing these hidden gems to us.
Aww thank you my friend. It's weird seeing it boarded up and the polar bears just cut off. I wonder if they still exist somewhere. Thanks for tuning in, Jason!
It's so sad to see these Elvis places go to the wayside like this. I understand that things change, but would it be nice if the Elvis places didn't change? In a perfect world I guess, Elvis and Lisa Marie would still be here. I loved this story and remember reading it in Ginger's book. I love that you went there Ashley and filmed the location and I totally loved the old pictures of the Polar Bear Custard shop! So cool to see what it looked like. Loved the polar bears. Thanks for all you do in the Elvis world Ashely, you are amazing!
Had to google frozen custard. It’s ice cream with eggs. I assume it’s one of those old American food items that went out of style. Very rare to find these days in the mainstream. I need to try it.
@paulgwyn7836Paul, I didn’t even realize custard was available in the South. I thought it was just a Northern thing. I know it’s huge in Wisconsin. Frozen custard is bigger than ice cream there. The biggest frozen custard stand in the world (at least by claim) is in Milwaukee and was what Arnold’s on Happy Days was based on.
It's sad the historic drive in wasn't preserved and maintained in business. I wish Liberty Land would have been continued as well.. I think it was an important part of Memphis' community and the city should have tried whatever it could to see that it continued. I would love to see both restored in business and to be as true as possible to their historic significance. It's sad these parts of Memphis history were allowed to deteriorate and closed. The community needs to get together and try to renew and maintain it's historic businesses as much as possible. Elvis fans could play an important part in preserving Memphis history and restoring what has been lost to time and neglect.
It makes me sad that all this history part of my life is fading away but as is everything in life theres a. Beginning and an end time goes by so fast enjoy it while you can guys
Back in the late 80s, there was a guy who lived next door to my friend, his name was Allen, he would tell stories about knowing Elvis and we never knew whether to believe him or not.. does the name Allen Fortas come up in any Presley lore???
I’m a huge fan of elvis Presley’s I love 💕 elviss music and flims too elvis will always be the king 👑 of rock and roll 🎸 my dream is to visit Graceland and communicate with elvis and his family and friends too 1:36pm the milk shake I would get is vanilla
I went to Graceland about 12 years ago and of course, it was great. I have to say however most of what I saw of Memphis was pretty rough. There were some nice Barbeque restaurants but other than that it was kinda depressing. Maybe I just didn't see the right areas.
I get that. If you're looking for vacation sites, then yes it would be a let down. But if you're looking For Elvis sites, they're all over and pretty valuable to his story regardless of how they look today
