I ordered the 36 single row palette from Robax. I'm thrilled Robert has engineered pans that fit in the areas of the palette, as you show in this video. That makes it easy to add and move pans. I'm also thrilled he now has a ceramic center mixing area.
@@ALittleCreative I've been playing with the palette and love many things about it! The turntable is indeed wonderful. Robert is absolutely wonderful to work with. Having an engineer who is also an artist is so helpful! He's always looking to incorporate new ideas too. I was also impressed with his PaletBoard that he designed, it was VERY interesting and will be a future purchase. I set my palette up using Jane Blundell's color wheel of 24 single pigment colors and added 12 other single pigment colors to fill in, but was determined to keep the neutralizing colors across from each other AND the triads in place. That gave me at least one cool and warm option in each color. I'm setting up the center palette with my convenience colors and personally mixed skin tones. The center ceramic mixing area is a Corelle 8 1/2" divided plate and I discovered I have 8 1/4" porcelain salad plates I never use that will be PERFECT for inserting in the center as a mixing surface too. Although I like the original plastic mixing centers the palette came with, I prefer the Corelle because it doesn't stain and is so much easier to clean. Realistically, it is an expensive palette but you don't have to purchase everything at once. The fact you can add on is a wonderful feature. It sits up off the table a bit when incorporating the turntable (which is so wonderful) at 2 1/8", however, that isn't a deal breaker either AND may even be better for keeping my brush angle correct. Are there a few changes I'd make for it to be the ideal palette, sure, but this is as close to perfection as I've seen anywhere!
Thank you for this fantastic video/review! 💫 You are so generous to include the opportunity to download your color name spreadsheet. Extremely grateful! 💕 Your demonstration using the D.S. Half Pans is genius! I know that one receives an empty 24 half-pan metal palette when they purchase the 24-color half-pan set. However, might you know if it is possible to purchase just D.S. empty half pans on their own? Thank you again!💗🌷
🤩 Amazing palette!! 🤔 Another possibility for singling out your limited palette color choices could be to take out those specific pans and put them in one of the top thirds of the mixing well space, or group them together in one line in the blank area of wells. Thanks for sharing!! 😄👍
Thanks for the info! It's always good to see a product "in action" that I might be interested in. I worry about my good sable brushes digging into a little half pan and ruining their fine points, so I'd probably go with Robax's pans. Do you get overwhelmed with so many colors? I have (*cough*) 43 colors, many of which are just 5 ml tubes that I got to just try, or were on a from an artist's dvd or book.
So far, I don't, but I am not a serious artist, I just love playing in paint. That said, I think for a balanced painting, you would need to limit the number of colors you use. That is why I use the little clips to mark the ones I'm using at a given time. Danielle Donaldson covers color mixing, etc. in her class. I highly recommend it. I have a few sable brushes, but all of my palettes use half pans. The Robax pans are much larger, and there would be less concern over it I"m sure. I find that I prefer my good synthetics over the sables. I don't know if it is because I worry less with them or what. Sometimes I struggle to use "precious" things if that makes sense.
Oh…, this is an older video😢, but maybe someone can help me… . She mentioned that the Schmincke pans do not fit and she transferred them to other pans. I own a lot of Schmincke half pans, but I really like this palette. So how do you transfer the colours from one pan into another? Many thanks for all the assistance you may offer.
With a sharp but sturdy knife cut around the pan where the paint is. After that just pull it out, the paint usually brakes, if little bits left in the pan just soak it with water and transfer it. Buy larger wells not the half pans. And definitely get liners. When the paint dries into the liner you can keep them in the larger portion and what you actually using just lift out and put into the middle wheel. Or you can designate a number to keep it empty in the outer portion to put the paint you are using there. Much easier to paint this way. The 64 outer wheel plus 41 inner wheel are good option and the well is gentle on expensive brushes because it is larger. No one uses that many colors in one painting. If not enough just get more liners, put the paint in them and dry them. Put the extras in a box. Robax palette best used as a working palette with large enough wells for your style. Just switch out the paints before you start painting. This way you will have clarity about your paints. I keep the paints I ALWAYS use in the wheel and the rest in liners. So I just grab the extras and put it in the wheel as I need it. Get the inner wells too, preferably with the same size liners. It is excellent for travel or outside. Don't get the 18 inch one, it is enormous. Hard to reach into it. 15 or 12 inches the best option with lots of liners.
@@LightshamanaQiarra oh, that’s a kind and detailed explanation…, thank you. I hope to be able to travel to the USA next month🙏. Then I will buy according to your explanation. In the meantime I can try to loosen the paints with the sturdy knife. I hope it will work! It’s funny that you answered my question today as exactly today all my open pages in Safari got closed and I couldn’t remember the name of the palette. I therefore had left the page open but -as I have just said, they all disappeared during this afternoon. And now there is your answer on TH-cam, many many thanks!!!! Also for the recommendations about the size…., I assume I would have bought the biggest, but your words showed me that that would be a mistake. Have a great day🙋🏽♀️
I went all over Tucson AZ today looking for a place which could print the template of my Robax palette and no printer could take a sheet of 140lb watercolor paper. I hope you see my comment and if you don’t mind could you tell me what kind of printer did u use for your template? Thanks.
I just received my 85 well colour palette and I am so excited to get it organized! I would appreciate a copy of the spread sheet for labels that you created!
carole villeneuve I was thinking the exact same thing. The whole point of using the larger Robax pan inserts is it’s so much better for your brushes...you can easily fit a larger brush in each well without having to dig into the tiny half-pan.
Awesome helpful video. Have been wanting one of these, but don't want to waste my money if it doesn't work as I imagine. Very helpful! Would love a copy of the spreadsheet. Thanks
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. I am really happy it was helpful. I have included a link to the Daniel Smith spreadsheet in the description above.
Could you please tell me the product number that you are showing here? I've been looking at these and I really love them but I'm not so sure I want to pay 21.00 for shipping from FL!!!
Sure. The palette is: PL85S, the carousel is PL03. You might reach out to the company re: shipping. They refunded any shipping overages I had with them, but it did cost over $17 (back 3 years ago) just for the actual shipping as it is a pretty big box with the palettes and packing materials. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
I just found your utube on the Robax! Thanks for guiding us through it! I will be purchasing one and would love a copy of the color chart! Is it possible to also get a copy of the DS labels? Thanks again!
Gosh, I'm sorry for the delay. You can find the spreadsheet here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Dhec0e4gJKgQpDzVUXeq68GPO2tpk9vKAia5cpZxMFo/edit?usp=sharing
How did you decide how many slots to use and how many places to save between one color and another. Using your list I will have to order the center two rows as you did.
I used the Daniel Smith dot chart to decide what I wanted to purchase in the future, and put them in order. Thanks so much for watching. Let me know if you have other questions.
I'm going to get this but I'm wondering what brand of half pans you used ,I like the idea of taking them out and putting then in my watercolour tins for plein air painting, It would really help me out if you can
I usually order my half pans from Jackson's Art in UK. Those work well, as well as half pans from Jerry's Artarama. It will seem like they won't work, but you have to use excessive force, and they will pop in. I also just ordered some half pans from Amazon, and it seems like they will work as well. The transparent half pans from Cheap Joes do not work, and the Schmincke half pans aren't ideal either. I hope this helps.
Yes this helps a lot! I found a sale on Jackson's art supply in the UK It's the 98 tube wood box set of sennlier watercolours , my price in Canadian dollars came out to $292.01 and that includes shipping! so I could not pass that up,it actually has 100 tubes in the case and it works out to $2.00 per tube! sorry for the long reply ,I'm just really happy with the price 😉 now to order the pallet and pans so thankyou again
Wow! Congratulations! That is a fantastic deal! I got in on the Sennelier sale as well, and got a 48 pan set with palette. I am just swatching it out today. I love the Sennelier paints as well, but they are very different from Daniel Smith. I found them to be generally low staining and great for glazing. I love the pans from Jackson's and the price is hard to beat.
Would love a copy of the spreadsheet...thanks for the useful video as I want to get my robax palette set up. I ordered their wells and did not like them, so I appreciate the info on which half pans worked 😊

Thank you for sharing. Am considering purchasing this amazing palette. Please email me daniel smith list. I have about 60 daniel smith, 108 hoblein, and a few m graham, sennelier, winsor newton, and van gogh. Plus about 36 - 48 pearl and metallic off brand colors. I need to be able to label them so this will work out great.

Are the wells good for color mixing?
The wells on the insert work well for mixing. I prefer to mix on the ceramic plate.
What do you mean when you say you "ran it through a sticker maker"?
I used a xyron sticker maker and followed those directions.
Very clever tips!
