    Don't know if you fixed it, I just came across your video, thought I might help, had the same problem with my R6 2006, and the problem was all the hoses and connection especially to the sensors, my mechanic changed them all to newer and more hard material so that they are not as susceptible to heat and wear. It took us around 3 months to figure it out and it was by fluke, as my mechanic was fiddling around he noticed that touching some sensor housing (I thing the worst was the atmospheric, could be wrong, I know he changed them all) the idle would play around to the point of the bike stalling. It has been more than 6 years now never again did I have the same issue.

    Nice R1! I have a 13. Hard cold starts are common on the 14b due weak starters. Rebuild your starter or throw a new one in and you'll be good to go 👍9/10 starters the issue could be your valves aswell but swapping the starter should be an easier place to start.

    • @JT2JZ
      @JT2JZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip man. I’ll definitely look into it a little more. Have you or any of your friends done the starter on your bike? What were the symptoms like? Slow crank, crank will time out before it should maybe?
      I feel like I might have multiple issues to be honest. My bike seems to crank ok at first when the battery is charged but starts slowing down and backfiring very quickly. The backfiring through the intake was what made me think valve adjustment is to tight or low compression issue.
      I tested my compression last night and it seemed a bit on the low side. 170psi ( cold )
      But I’m no bike expert. I always appreciate other people’s input and experience.

      @@JT2JZ No problem. I have known a few people with the cold start issue. Bike would slow crank and then just stop like a dead battery but the battery is fine. Anothers would continuously try and turn over but would not fire very similar to yours with the momentary back fire. Both started fine throughout the day when warm but back to hatd start the next. New starter / rebuilt original with new internals fixed both.

      Update. Just checked the valve lash tonight. They are all in spec. Looks like your starter suggestion may be right. The more I think about it the more I bet the starter has high draw. I don’t think a new battery should die after 20-30 seconds of cranking when it was fully charged. I did get the starter to stumble on me once as well.

    Had similar problems with my 2010. Put a lithium ion fixed the issue. The problem with the crossplane engine is that it requires a lot of charge to crank over. Also check your charging system because it can be draining any battery you put in there

    • @JT2JZ
      @JT2JZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya it seems like a lot of people run into similar issues with these bikes. A battery upgrade would definitely be worth it. Thanks for the advice.

    • @crisnmaryfam7344
      @crisnmaryfam7344 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont think its the "cross plane" doing that. Improper care of the battery or Just a really poor quality battery/starter.. and a possible issue with the stator and the magnets that like to fall off down into the engine, are more likely to be the culprit (or was this issue addressed in the 09+?). The starter is the one exerting the "charge" you are referring to. IF the charge system is working properly and the battery is proper spec, it should have no issue turning the engine over. Ive personally worked on high compression "SBC" 350ci builds, where we have to jump the starter up to a higher torque 454 starter, the battery never "needs" upgraded to achieve easy engine rotation. Though I wont discount the numerous other benefits of an upgraded battery.

    • @JT2JZ
      @JT2JZ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did the same. Bought a Lipo Antigravity brand 2.5 lb 360 cold cranking amp battery, and now my bike fires up instantly, even after I've been riding for a while. Love the black R1. I have a 12 and I was having the same issues with the cold start. Replaced the spark plugs and the battery. Still the same issue. What fixed my issue was I turn the key let the fuel pump run, hit the on switch then crank the bike for 2-3 seconds. Shut it down completely then repeat the process again. Mine typically starts on the 2nd-3rd try. I did the same thing you were doing letting it crank to see if it will start but that ended up killing my battery every time. Hopefully this helps.

    • @JT2JZ
      @JT2JZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine was very similar to yours. Would always start 2-3 attempt. I now think that my starter has been weak the entire time. It has completely failed on me now and my bike no longer cranks at all. I also put in a large lithium ion battery and I think that’s what finally killed it. I could smell a slight burning odour the last time it cranked over slow and then died completely.
      My starter shows up in two weeks. I’ll let you know if that was the root cause and will likely make a video tearing down the old starter and checking for damage.

    I'm guessing you're at 25,925 and not 35,925km? Either way still fairly low. Crank-no-start issues always suck. My Ducati 999 had an issue with the sprag clutch going out after I did everything you would check. New battery, new plugs, new filters (tested with no filters too), etc... Still was hard to start, backfired through the intake and afterfired through the exhaust. Ran a compression test on one cylinder and got good numbers, ran it on the second cylinder and it was 25% lower, and immediately destroyed the sprag clutch afterwards.
    I would be of the opinion that it's not valve related with it being that low in miles, but like you said depending on previous owners and their riding, YMMV. I would check compressions first, then fuel pressure coming out of the pump (as well as any fuel filters). Check your grounds too and clean them up if needed.
    Also, when was the last time you changed your brake fluid? Is it just my eyes or does it look almost black?
    edit: your starter sounds exactly the same as my '09, and the only issue that bike has is the CCT being loose on startup making the slapping noise. I have a shorai battery in mine however unlike your AGM, and I believe it has much much higher CCA's too.
    edit2: Read the solenoid contacts needed cleaning... Hope your issue stays resolved.
    edit3: also just noticed you're the same guy who compared the R6 to R1 seat. Have to say your video definitely made me finally decide to get the R1. I had started on an R6, then went to the Duc, and then back on the R1. Been a blast so far.

      I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a valve lash issue the more I think about it. If the valve lash is to tight when the bike is cold it could potentially have a valve or two that are not fully closing / sealing causing a low compression condition. Makes scenes to me why I had it backfire through the intake as well.

      I ended up finding corrosion in a connector for the starter solenoid.
      Bike is starting normal again after I cleaned the connector out. Time will tell if that repair lasts. Its only been a week but so far so good.

    Dude, story of my life w my 09R1. Like that sound yours makes trying to start, the little blip backfire, all that shit. Every fkn time I try to start mine. Replaced the battery twice, cleaned the filter, replaced the coil, replaced the starter, replaced the starter relay....same shit. I've taken it to 3 different shops. They have no answers accept, this bike does this...Not cool when I'm at the gas station or grocery store cranking it like a dumbass over and over so I can get back home....wtf

      Ya that’s my biggest complaint as well. The firing order of these engines is goofy and they are a really hard engine to start. If it’s around 0C* outside it struggles with cold starts even worse!
      A new starter did help my bike out a lot. Lithium ion battery helped as well. Still not perfect though like a flat plane bike..

    Unless plugs are older than 5 yrs or have more than 25k on them. Just take a wire brush and little kerosene, wipe them off and good as new.

      @@JT2JZ Funnily enough I had the same issue a year ago. To buy a new starter here in the UK was £600, genuine Yamaha part. I bought a Chinese starter for £70 and it's still going strong, My starter progressively got weaker and when I pulled it you could smell it had burnt out. I think they're a weak point on these

      I tried giving throttle when starting as well but didn’t make a difference for me. I ended up finding corrosion in the main starter solenoid connection. Cleaned it out and the bike has been pretty good ever since.
