      I like the bold graphics, the Andy Warhol like pictures, the pink pillows on the couch. I had my first apartment in 1977 and obviously, it was fairly modern in style. Parson table, bentwood rocker, lots of plants. I even made a 3 foot plant holder by using an empty cylinder that had been used to hold upholstery fabric and cover it with silver, mirror shelf lining paper. Ha ha! I still have the baskets that I grouped together on the wall and actually, I found almost all of them and about six months ago, hung them up in my living room! I love it.

    Being old enough to remember the period, normal everyday people didn't have all that crazy art on their walls, only the teenagers did. Most only had one weird thing in their house and stayed pretty normal. they did the color thing with throws and furniture covers, but kept the basics. Some lamps would be popular, but most of this furniture you either saw in the movies or in the "pads" of the upper class in magazines.

      My parents had danish modern furniture and very groovy lighting. Also Marimekko fabric stretched onto large panels instead of art. I think it really depends on exactly when people set up their homes. My aunt and uncle who were only a few years older had the colonial stuff and the wood paneling instead.

      I don’t won’t to offend anyone. That furniture is very very uncomfortable. I couldn’t stand living with any of it. I didn’t like the lamps and light fixtures either. I felt much more comfortable when I visited my Grandparents house.

    I’d love a fileting about how the various midcentury modern flavours ties into Scandi.
    Bc (speaking as a Swede) early midcentury pretty much jives w Scandi in shape (but stronger colours) but once you’re into sunken pits, weird colours and hippie fonts it seriously feels like the connection is gone

    • @freedomthroughspirit
      @freedomthroughspirit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      EXACTLY what I was going to ask in a comment! I thought I knew was MCM was; now I'm wondering if I'm more Scandi. 👏👏👏

    • @Heyu7her3
      @Heyu7her3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even though it emerged in the mid-1900s, Scandinavian design would be considered just "modern". I think these days, Scandi designs will incorporate a few pieces or elements from other design styles, but yeah, Ikea aesthetic wouldn't be considered mid-century modern.

    Thanks Lisa!! This is so helpful!! We live in a 1958 ranch and want to preserve the great lines and quality construction while bringing in modern functionality. You’ve really helped me see that the 50’s atomic age is where our home shines so we can craft a more cohesive design style through the house. Thanks🙏🏼😊

    I just remembered how much I loved the office interiors at the beginning of the Madmen series and also how much I loved the living room when they moved into their new home that was French inspired with that amazing chaise. I think my favorite point of the mid-century modern era must be when they were transitioning between the late 50s and early 60s. Something about open concept spaces, natural elements, an abundance of light, and luxe statement pieces. Thank you for covering this!!

    We retired a few years ago and bought a RV to travel full time. Out went the beige and brown decor and in came tulip chairs.... orange, gold and aqua colors...a couple atomic age art pieces, tiered lamps and accessories. We have lots of cherry wood cabinets which look fantastic with the bright colors now. I smile with delight when people compliment our happy decor. You can make MCM happen in any kind of space if you follow great advise like you provide. Loved this video. 💫

    I love mid century modern. I inherited my childhood home and it is filled with late mid century modern mixed with traditional mahogany furniture. Somehow it works. I adore the mix. I always wanted Barcelona chairs but they are so expensive. A few years ago I found a pair with one ottoman at an estate sale for $350 total! Oh yes! A dream come true. So I added those into the mix . They make me happy. I don't like living with loud colors so various rooms are painted soft blue, soft green, and ivory. The art work is soft colors too. Not pastel. Somehow it all looks beautiful together. So even though I have a lot of mid century modern furniture I would describe my "style " as eclectic. Not sure if that is a style but it suits me. Fun video.

  • @bricksloth6920
    @bricksloth6920 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You can mix these. Because thinking back to the actual time period, most people didn't replace all their furniture and decor. A lot of the big pieces would be older, with paint and smaller decor updated.

    I LOVE MCM design because it seems to offer more floor space with the less is more idea. Even smaller rooms feel bigger, neater and intentional. Also the history of it and the memories, refections as a little girl. MCM has class without being snobby. LOL! I enjoy it best with a TIKI cocktail drink and listening to Dean Martain on the HI-FI. I had that black and white herringbone dress! OMG, I feel so old! I'm a minimalistic kind of person. Clean lines, simple but elegant and comfortable furniture is what I love. Loved this video and I've lived through the mid-century modern era. My personal tastes lean more toward a less is more classic modern with a splash of simple elegance. Barcelona chairs (I have two originals in chocolate brown) and a Saarinen Dining Table, (round with marble top) are my base pieces. Don't go crazy on me when I tell you that I've paired the dining table with charcoal grey Emeco Navy repurposed plastic chairs. I know, what was I thinking, but I do believe in doing my part in a small way to be eco-friendly. The chairs are amazingly comfortable and don't take up very much room. If you haven't seen them in the plastic form (Emeco in partnership with Coca-Cola), check them out, you will be surprised how durable and good they look. I also have a custom made charcoal grey tuxedo tight back sofa.. The tricky part is to not mix too much in my space to lose the individual beauty of each piece and yet have a cohesive look. I'm considering adding either a bent glass or Noguchi coffee table into my open concept living/dining room. Too much? I'm also trying to figure out a light fixture over the dining table. I'm moving so I'm rethinking how to best use the pieces I have and what would be good additions or deletions. My husband is always in fear that I will sell or give away pieces as he loves to hang on to things and I am the exact opposite.

    This is great. Mid-century Modern is often weird, sometimes ugly, and frequently surprising. I love being able to see what people can do with it that is pleasing without looking like they are living in "The Jetsons." Going through this with you, I realize how depressing I find the early part of the era, how silly I find the middle portion, and the latter years of it are pleasing to the eye in many ways, but too much like movie sets that one would not wish to live in. Sort of the latter part of the epoch is a place that would be fun to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. I must say, when you started showing us current rooms done in the style and breaking it down for us, I found most of them to be aesthetically pleasing in many ways. It may be that as reinterpretations with modern materials, they dispensed with extremes and some of the kitsch. The green room you showed was doable thanks to natural light and the artificial lighting chosen. This was fun and made it seem possible to live with this stuff. LOL.

    You look great - as always 🤩. When I was able to afford the Eames Lounge Chair, I was completely over the moon for a few days. My grandma gave me the Knoll sofa shortly before. It has since been reupholstered but is still one of my favorite pieces. The thing about midcentury pieces, though, is that good design pieces and excellent quality are outrageously expensive. My style is also more transitional, especially after the great Biedermeier furniture has fallen in price and the clear lines can be combined well.

    I have a late 1950’s mid century ranch and have been scouring the internet for inspiration and education. I’m originally from Palm Springs, and that PS look is my favorite, but our ranch is going to remain aesthetic. We even still have the inhome and outdoor speakers. They’re non working but in hopes of bringing him back to life in some fashion. Love everything you do! Love this episode. (We bought this ranch earlier this year and live in Knoxville)
    Just got done watching your tiny bathroom episode. We are not changing the bones of the house, we are keeping it original and I’m learning to love my tiny master bathroom. We just moved from a 3300 square-foot home where I had a bathroom the size of a kids bedroom, so this has been an adjustment. 🤣It’s a wonderful adjustment, but I’m learning to utilize my space much better.

    Just like Lisa states, there is no chance to fail with some classic pieces, like the Wishbone Chair (Wegner), the Tulip Table (Saarinen) or the Barcelona Chair (van er Rohe). They don't have to be the original ones, often quite expensive, but well crafted, with care. Manhattan Home Design is a good place to look for.

    As a baby boomer born in the 1950s this is dazzling. One thing, you're leaving out a movie that zooms in on design features of the 50, in a very specific way. The movie is "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" (NOT the tv series) Check it out. It's one of my favorite movies.

    Ooo . . . MCM is a style I struggle with. I love the occasional oddly shaped piece mixed in with other styles, but the full-on treatment is a no for me. Maybe because I remember when it got super mainstream back in the late 60s. The great thing about it is it wears like iron, so you can get great value for thrift store prices . . . you know, if it's your thing.

    My neighborhood in NorCal, has a couple mid Century modern homes. I grew up in this neighborhood and my good friend, parents had a large 50s MCM custom home about 2100 sq ft, ( not big by today's standards) and even though the house has some MCM architecture, his Mom had the whole inside furnished in good traditional early American furniture, and it actually worked, made what could have been cold , warm and cozy, it was honestly very nice

      @@LisaHoltDesign it was one of my favorite neighborhood houses, had a floor plan with a large center kitchen, great open floor plan for a 1955 house. Someone bought it in 1973 and gave it a Spanish facade and the front of the house actually looks better. Some of those mid 50s MCM architecture did function over appearance which was the case with this house

    I did mid century before it was cool. Chrome dinette in the kitchen with a red and white Formica top. Starburst design. Got atomicware dishes. I also have a small kitch collection of cats and pixies in my mom's China cabinet as well as some fabulous Carlos Moretti goblets. All found thrifting along with stretch glass vases. I love having the real stuff. I do mix it with new furniture. My family thinks I'm crazy until they see it together. I live in a small community. Everybody has the same things usually. I find it comfortable without looking too sterile like minimal styles.

    I’m not sure how TH-cam works and if you will ever see this, seeing as the video is from 9 months ago, however, I have a question. We have a very expensive mistake in our house. I chose a teal blue leather sofa a couple of years ago which I am finding hard to paint/decorate around now. I am trying to choose paint colours for the main floor that has light hardwood floors and to be determined kitchen & entryway flooring. I feel like white is my only option. I realize that I am likely not giving you enough information but do you have any suggestions?

    We must have very different definitons of Mid-Century Modern. For me, most of what you showed was indeed mid-century, but not modern. The modern part refers to the modernist movement, as in Eames, Jacobsen, Bertoia, Niemeyer, Erskine, Le Corbusier and so on, which built on Bauhaus principles. The Jetsons and atomic age trends etc happened around the same time but were completely different things.
