What it was like back in 1977 when you’d seen all the hype and heard all the talk and then finally you sat in the theatre to witness this opening scene. What an experience.

And add to it my first date. Age 15, life was good. Well for a few hours.
It was mind blowing to my little ten year old mind. Especially the camera shot underneath the star destroyer.

First, one has to appreciate that you weren't seeing this on your 70" flat-screen or even your home theater. No, you were sitting in a dark cinema, (no cell phones), popcorn in hand with 700 other people, with a great, big, glorious W-I-D-E-S-C-R-E-E-N projection in front of you. Plus, absolutely NOTHING like Star Wars had ever been seen before: The HUUUUGE ships, dazzling FX, characters, story, music, imagination, ALL of it a perfect storm of movie making. First, the opening "crawl", set to John William's rousing score, then we look down to see planets in front of us. Suddenly, the first ship zooms overhead, laser bolts flying back and forth. You knew they were running from something but . . . HOLY SMOKES!! The ginourmous star destroyer, its rumbling engines rattling your teeth, glides into view from somewhere behind you, so close you want to duck and look back over your shoulder. And then it just keeps on coming and there's just more, . . . and more . . . and MORE, almost as if there would be no end.
And in that moment, you and the 700 other people all KNEW the next two hours were going to be pure magic!
And they were. :oD
And the Dolby Sound System made it seem like you were part of the action onscreen!

A great movie, watched it twice in one week, when it was distributed in 1977, to me the first three were the best.

I was born 1991 my father who saw it in theaters introduced me to this film i was memorized he explained the whole series ill never forget it and then when i was old enough to understand the themes and story the phantom menace came out saw that in theaters il never forget the scene with darth maul was so frikkin badass but what really makes me cherish the original trilogy is well my uncles and my dad they were all about hunting and using firearms whenever i think of my uncle Todd i think of Han Solo when he shot greedo they were all vigilant badasses and 2 of my uncles were in the military my uncle todd the army my other uncle Scott was in the Navy and plus my grandpa in the army served in Korea he got 2 purple hearts from combat and then i tried to somewhat be like them by joining the marines in 2011 finished my tour in 2015 ill never forget this movie it reminds me of my family and how lucky i am to have such a great family may the force be with us all
See, what I like about this scene is that it's bright. I can SEE what's happening. And it makes complete sense that a space ship would be white, to make it easier to clean and also to use a minimum of energy to have good vision in the corridors. I don't have to suspend my disbelief, because everything is really there. No wonder it works so much better than the newer movies.
All Space ships seem to have a lot of corridors. Star Wars set the standard. I would design an open living area with rooms off the main room or there is too much inefficiency. We all know how much the Space Station costs and wasting space on thoroughfares isn't smart. I would have thought all doors would close air tight on a space ship too. Why only the main entrance? That was the only door it took to get in. And if insisting on corridors at least have them lined with munitions. Even in Indiana Jones when he went in the tunnel at the start of Raiders arrows and sh!t were firing at him. And the good guys seem to sneak around these corridors on bad guys ships while avoiding marching troops in any space franchise. Another Star Wars staple. Why not just have CCTV? Just saying. Bye the way. Best opening to any movie in history. Love it.

What a film! I was 22, and a freshly-minted college graduate when I saw this film, in the very first week it opened. I spent my graduation weekend telling people about it, that whole summer telling people about it. Thanks for reminding me what a fine film George Lucas gave us.

The scene that started it all
Man, I feel sorry for anyone liking Star Wars that did not see this in 1977. There had been literally nothing like it. 2001 did a good job with the shuttle docking at the space station and the passenger pod docking on the Moon, but the movie had already started.
This was a special effects laden battle scene with a John Williams soundtrack. It really was astounding on the big screen in 1977.

I was about 5 at the time so it's surprising I can still recall this but I remember my dad being excited about the movie. Him saying that the effects were so good that the spaceships looked real and not like they were on strings. I remember being in very long queues to get into the cinema. That they projected lights onto the walls of the theatre that looked like stars before the movie started. That we went back more than twice to see the movie again.
Only now do I realize how weird it is to see Darth Vader enter a scene without the Imperial March playing in the background.

Originally this film was to be a stand alone film hence why it was simply known as Star Wars back in 1977.
George Lucas strongly felt the film was destined to flop which was why he didn't attend the film premiere.
But because the film on the contrary became a global phenomenon, Lucas decided to expand this into two more blockbusters giving birth the original trilogy.
In fact Darth Vader was never meant to be the father of Luke and Leia nor were the two heros meant to be siblings.
However Lucas did consider making it a franchise if the original film was a success. If it hadn't we wouldn't have the Star Wars we know and love.
He actually had the entire original trilogy, and the bare bone basics of the prequels, scripted and in mind when he wrote the film. He only made the original trilogy into a Trilogy because he knew he couldn't have enough money and time to do the whole thing in one shot. Which is why he made the first part into a movie and made it as stand alone as possible just in case it would not be successful to warrant the creation of parts 2 and 3.
This movie is timeless..it will still be talked about in 2077. Way ahead of it's time.

Why does a movie from 1977 still look more realistic and vibrant than movies made in 2023? Seriously, look how bright and eye-popping and sharp this movie looks compared to the visual mess that movies are today.
Today's movies have so much access to CGI that the studios tend to use it to cut corners. It's why so many recent movies look like soupy messes.

I watched Shazam and Isis, the Superfreinds, Worlds Greatest Superfreinds, Black Star, Thundar the Barbarian, Why? Because at the end of those shows they taught life lessons and morals.

If you weren’t there, you cannot even imagine what it was like seeing this in a theater the first time.
ALL of this was new. The fx, the sounds the music. And seeing all of these beloved characters for the first time. Images that would be burned in our minds for the rest of our lives!! I had almost every moment of this clip, in Star Wars Trading cards. Even when the escape pod launches.

I hear people today complain about this movie, saying it is SLOW PACED. DUDE! As a kid, I was completely out of breath, until they landed on Tattooine.
I would’ve screamed “What the fuck?” When the ship flew over….we didn’t know they were called Star Destroyers then…. But I was too young to even say “Fuck”. In fact, back then , nobody ever said that.

I grew up in a tiny, one screen theater town. We didn’t get this movie until weeks later. A friend who had been out of town and saw it, told us of this amazing movie, with characters like Freekio, and sandtroopers. He wasn’t our smartest friend, but when it finally came to our town, we were blown away.
It would be great to see the period between Anakin becoming Darth Vader and this movie
There’s a couple different versions I believe. There’s the canon version “Star Wars rebels” then there’s the legends version “the force unleashed” I’m not sure if I have it correct but both tatie place before the events of this movie and after ep 3.

My mum and dad were 27 years old when they saw A New Hope in the cinema for the first time in 1977. She said it was an absolutely mind blowing to experience and everyone was in awe when they left the theatre afterwards. They went back a few days later to watch it again. Dad passed away many years ago but I am still so grateful that they introduced me to a series of films that influenced my life so much growing up. 🤍

So, Vader says, "Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by rebel spies." Yet at the end of Rogue 1, the plans were handed off by one rebel soldier to another. Did the writers of the movies of today even WATCH this movie before writing a prequel?
