I worked in a Japanese factory in America for a while and one of the warning signs on the machine said, "Please put fingers here! Pinch Point!" It did have all the appropriate pictures telling me not to do that, but I had a laugh every day at it.
Trust me...if using Japanese Kana and Kanji were an advertising thing in the West on the same level it would be FAR worse and even funnier. No worries.
As long I can understand what the product is, I literally don't care. My local Asian store uses "crap" instead of "crab" on ALL of their signs (for example "crap meat" or "crap flavour") and it's hilarious. They have been doing it for at least 10 years now, and apparently nobody has told them and I doubt some ever will.
Please don’t be embarrassed by “decoration English “ the USA is guilty of decoration, Japanese, Korean and Chinese and for the most part we don’t even know what it says. I actually feel better knowing that other countries do this too, we can share the shame.

As a native English speaker, I find "bad English" hilarious, but in a charming way. You should NOT feel embarrassed. Even if people laugh it's in good humor 99% of the time. And frankly who cares about the 1% or jerks. I speak some German, Japanese, Mandarin, and a tiny bit of Cantonese... Imagine the mistakes I make... Yep... It's not pretty.
The more languages you speak, the more you can mix up. I speak several languages myself, and I sometimes don't even realise I mix up words or even completely switch to a different language. And I sometimes get wierd looks when people realise I can read not just the alphabet, but several other writing systems too, and still mess up every single one of them...

I would be having a conversation with him, and workers would be passing by, and he could switch between English and Spanish instantly! I asked him what went on in his mind as he switched languages so instantly, and he said he didn’t realize he was doing it, it just happened. Which I thought was amazing!

I struggle with Polish and Spanish, so I can't hold a conversation in those languages easily, otherwise I'd be switching even more.

Pastoral imagery is common in marketing for food, but I think people tend to assume that anything written on packaging which isn't strictly informational is a lie or exaggeration, so brands don't bother with long-winded descriptions of how nice the farm it came from is unless the product is some kind of organic health food thing.

I’ve had a few friends that aren’t from the United States and they didn’t understand our humor at all. They too didn’t really understand the sarcasm, and how sarcasm can be used to insult someone or used to make jokes. Here in Ireland I've noticed that the Irish really love to use sarcasm, but sometimes they get confused when it's used against them. Kinda glass cannon type of thing.
Had a friend in the military that was stationed in Japan and got a tattoo in Japanese that said stupid foreigner. Absolutely did it on purpose. Used it to make the local girls laugh and try and score. It actually worked a few times I'm told.

My first time visiting japan I saw a hair salon that was named 'Hair make lovely' I thought it was absolutely amazing. It made sense but was also humorous in its delivery. I can't remember the location. I think it may have been niiza-shi in the saitama prefecture but I'm not 100% sure.

“Engrish” in Japan is no different than people in America getting Chinese tattoos that they can’t actually read. I once met a overweight girl who had a tattoo which she claimed read “old soul”, my friend, who knows mandarin, was trying hard not to laugh until she walked away. I asked him what was so funny? He then told me that the tattoo didn’t say “old soul”, it actually said “hippopotamus”. Obviously the tattoo artist who did that was wrong, but I’ll be honest, I nearly threw up laughing.

Honestly the Engrish isone of the most entertaining forms of English I have ever seen after Chinese English. It is absolutely hilarious. Me and my friends almost died from laughter once when we travelled to Fukuoka, Hakata City. The main page of the Hakata AMU Plaza was trasnslated to English and it was impossible to stop laughing at some shop descriptions such as "If you are rich, please come to this store." or "Please enjoy one dish of the chef whole body".
Well, I never ! I won't step foot in such an establishment, until I win the lottery, that is ! And, no thank you, I won' t be partaking of any chef's body dish. Cannibalism just isn't my thing. Ha ha ! Just luv some Engrish to liven up a dull existence.

Jindiana Jones is a parody. the guy on the poster is comedian Jin Katagiri. it even says the same name written in Japanese. it's not a problem with translations at all, just a parody.
In English there are three different ways to us the word “to” in the video it meant “two” as in the number. Therd is also “too” meaning as well, and “to” which is more complex since it is used as a preposition and adverb and and infinitive marker. That’s not the only word that is like that in English, honestly it’s one of the easier ones to understand.
I'm impressed with the attempt that is made to provide english translations for visitors. Some of the results are helarious, but as an American that is fluent in only one language I make no judgements on those responsible. I just look at it as happy accidents. Thank you for sharing.

But I can understand why some non-English speakers get confused as they all sound the same. English has a lot of common words that sound the same but mean something different.

There are cultures here in America that prefer "Organic" which means no chemicals were used growing it. Others will list what group of farms the food comes from. I have had family and friends that had a farm so I have seen how a lot of it works
So, in the off chance someone hasn't had the guts to explain it yet: Business Boy is not a term I've ever actually heard used, but it sounds like something that could be a euphemism for a male prostitute. Businessman is the word they're going for - a respectable person who works in an office, typically in a higher level position. In general, English tends to use younger terms for people when it's being used in a romantic or sexual way....which now that I've recognized this on a conscious level is incredibly uncomfortable. Even for more respectable relationships - boyfriend and girlfriend, for instance. Another prostitution euphemism is "call girl" - which to the innocent could mean a person who works in a call centre doing telemarketing. Business boy feels like the same sort of euphemism - some term that relates to the fact that it's work combined with boy instead of man. As far as I know, it's not an established term at all. (Indeed, as far as I know there's less terms for male prostitutes here, and most of what I've heard has just been a term used for female prostitutes but with one of "male" "man" or "boy" tacked on before or after it.) But it's off from "businessman" just enough and in just the right way to lead one to think along those lines. At least, if you're the kind of person who sees "nicestick" as "nicedick." My grandmother probably wouldn't have noticed that angle on either of those terms.
Japan loves tresuring their cultural heritage, which includes age-old producers and craftsmen, quite alot. Abit too much sometimes if you ask me since it can be so fucking expensive, as I hear depending on where it comes from in Japan, to buy even basics at times.

Japan is famous for Engrish but as a German, I've laughed and felt a bit ashamed (well, not personally but for them, we have a word for it in German) about numerous German Denglish product and marketing terms. The amount of (often bad) English by media has increased a lot over the last decade or so. The funniest was a major fashion label releasing the "body bag" not knowing what it actually means in English. Japanese is also very different from English. I think there are different versions of Engrish. The total random stuff, things that are supposed to sound poetic/dramatic and also puns such as the famous ancient meme Michaelsoft Binbows or the Jindiana Jones one here. And of course just bad translations due to language difference. The relationship between English pronunciation and English spelling is almost non-existant unless you know into how English developed over many centuries. Anyways, we should not take these things too seriously and have fun with cross cultural miscommunication and humerous banter between nations. I find Engrish rather endearing.
"Weird Engrish" is actually an art form requiring many months/years of study to master. I hope it never dies out. Ken Shimura provided an excellent lecture on this topic about 10 years ago on his TV show. You will realize that the Japanese have their own version of British-style, ironic/sarcastic humor. For example, when a student reads aloud the phrase "Who's this?" -- the professor quickly corrects him: "Hoojoo Dishoo!"
I feel just like how 'Westerns' get tattoo's or try to talk in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc, Us Westerns get Eastern things wrong too. Which is why we ALL need to 'Super Check' before saying, doing or 'ESPECIALLY' tattooing anything!! And DON'T FEEL AT ALL EMBARRASSED about your native country trying to use and understand English. I am a native speaker of the US and it is a very difficult language to learn as a non-english speaking person. We do have a very crazy/tricky language.
i think it's so hard to learn because it quite a lot of exceptions. like since i'm a native english speaker i know how to formulate natural sounding sentences and i can tell if a word is misspelled by instinct even if i don't use it often, but stuff like that can be very difficult for a english learner especially if they try to get ahold of every part of the language. imo i think people shouldn't try to get it perfect, as long as you can understand what others say and others can understand what you say i think it's fine. and if you spend time surrounded by english content you'll start to get a better hold of the language simply by hearing and reading what people say, even if it's entertainment.

I’ve had a few friends that aren’t from the United States and they didn’t understand our humor at all. They too didn’t really understand the sarcasm, and how sarcasm can be used to insult someone or used to make jokes. It’s completely understandable that it can be confusing to others who aren’t used to hearing or using sarcasm :) really liked this video! Defiantly subscribing to see more content :)
Here in Ireland I've noticed that the Irish really love to use sarcasm, but sometimes they get confused when it's used against them. Kinda glass cannon type of thing.

Had a friend in the military that was stationed in Japan and got a tattoo in Japanese that said stupid foreigner. Absolutely did it on purpose. Used it to make the local girls laugh and try and score. It actually worked a few times I'm told.
I love Chris' videos and it was nice to see a Japanese person react to one of them. You clearly understood his sarcasm and irony, which is often at the heart of our British humour...and is certainly at the centre of all of Chris' videos! He really is 30 and is single too! My first time visiting japan I saw a hair salon that was named 'Hair make lovely' I thought it was absolutely amazing. It made sense but was also humorous in its delivery. I can't remember the location. I think it may have been niiza-shi in the saitama prefecture but I'm not 100% sure.

“Engrish” in Japan is no different than people in America getting Chinese tattoos that they can’t actually read. I once met a overweight girl who had a tattoo which she claimed read “old soul”, my friend, who knows mandarin, was trying hard not to laugh until she walked away. I asked him what was so funny? He then told me that the tattoo didn’t say “old soul”, it actually said “hippopotamus”. Obviously the tattoo artist who did that was wrong, but I’ll be honest, I nearly threw up laughing.

Honestly the Engrish isone of the most entertaining forms of English I have ever seen after Chinese English. It is absolutely hilarious. Me and my friends almost died from laughter once when we travelled to Fukuoka, Hakata City. The main page of the Hakata AMU Plaza was trasnslated to English and it was impossible to stop laughing at some shop descriptions such as "If you are rich, please come to this store." or "Please enjoy one dish of the chef whole body".
Well, I never ! I won't step foot in such an establishment, until I win the lottery, that is ! And, no thank you, I won' t be partaking of any chef's body dish. Cannibalism just isn't my thing. Ha ha ! Just luv some Engrish to liven up a dull existence.

Yep. A Brazilian who lived in Japan said that his city's garbage bag was written in Japanese, English and Portuguese, since a lot of us (BR) lived there to work in the factories.

Try looking at instruction manuals for toys and tools written by Chinese manufacturers. Lots of odd writings in there.
Amazon Japan: Sells tons of Chinese Camera Security Systems - dirt cheap. Some of that Chinese Engrish is right in the Software, too. "Flakey Camera Setting" "Pro Tube Crime Uploading" (for instant record and upload real time motion detection to youtube, etc). "WARN: Always rewind the drive User" - I got what I paid for.
My sister got some sort of cream product from a foreign country (forget which one). The directions started out just fine, but then quickly devolved into some of the strongest Engrish I've ever read. And that was over the course of, like, five sentences.
My favorite was on the instructions for the original Dance Dance Revolution video game. It said "Do not wear sharp shoes while playing"

Jindiana Jones is a parody. the guy on the poster is comedian Jin Katagiri. it even says the same name written in Japanese. it's not a problem with translations at all, just a parody.
In English there are three different ways to us the word “to” in the video it meant “two” as in the number. Therd is also “too” meaning as well, and “to” which is more complex since it is used as a preposition and adverb and and infinitive marker. That’s not the only word that is like that in English, honestly it’s one of the easier ones to understand.
I'm impressed with the attempt that is made to provide english translations for visitors. Some of the results are helarious, but as an American that is fluent in only one language I make no judgements on those responsible. I just look at it as happy accidents.

I love seeing this kind of English in Japan. It makes me laugh. I'm not laughing at the people who wrote it for making mistakes, it's funny because it is so completely different from what I expect. That's what makes things funny. I would be sad if this kind of English went away. Japanese people should not apologize or be embarrassed. This kind of English is fun and awesome and native English speakers like me love it.

There are cultures here in America that prefer "Organic" which means no chemicals were used growing it. Others will list what group of farms the food comes from. I have had family and friends that had a farm so I have seen how a lot of it works

So, in the off chance someone hasn't had the guts to explain it yet: Business Boy is not a term I've ever actually heard used, but it sounds like something that could be a euphemism for a male prostitute. Businessman is the word they're going for - a respectable person who works in an office, typically in a higher level position.
In general, English tends to use younger terms for people when it's being used in a romantic or sexual way....which now that I've recognized this on a conscious level is incredibly uncomfortable. Even for more respectable relationships - boyfriend and girlfriend, for instance. Another prostitution euphemism is "call girl" - which to the innocent could mean a person who works in a call centre doing telemarketing. Business boy feels like the same sort of euphemism - some term that relates to the fact that it's work combined with boy instead of man.
As far as I know, it's not an established term at all. (Indeed, as far as I know there's less terms for male prostitutes here, and most of what I've heard has just been a term used for female prostitutes but with one of "male" "man" or "boy" tacked on before or after it.) But it's off from "businessman" just enough and in just the right way to lead one to think along those lines. At least, if you're the kind of person who sees "nicestick" as "nicedick." My grandmother probably wouldn't have noticed that angle on either of those terms.

Japan loves tresuring their cultural heritage, which includes age-old producers and craftsmen, quite alot. Abit too much sometimes if you ask me since it can be so fucking expensive, as I hear depending on where it comes from in Japan, to buy even basics at times.

Japan is famous for Engrish but as a German, I've laughed and felt a bit ashamed (well, not personally but for them, we have a word for it in German) about numerous German Denglish product and marketing terms. The amount of (often bad) English by media has increased a lot over the last decade or so. The funniest was a major fashion label releasing the "body bag" not knowing what it actually means in English. Japanese is also very different from English.
I think there are different versions of Engrish. The total random stuff, things that are supposed to sound poetic/dramatic and also puns such as the famous ancient meme Michaelsoft Binbows or the Jindiana Jones one here. And of course just bad translations due to language difference. The relationship between English pronunciation and English spelling is almost non-existant unless you know into how English developed over many centuries.
Anyways, we should not take these things too seriously and have fun with cross cultural miscommunication and humerous banter between nations. I find Engrish rather endearing.
"Weird Engrish" is actually an art form requiring many months/years of study to master. I hope it never dies out. Ken Shimura provided an excellent lecture on this topic about 10 years ago on his TV show. You will realize that the Japanese have their own version of British-style, ironic/sarcastic humor. For example, when a student reads aloud the phrase "Who's this?" -- the professor quickly corrects him: "Hoojoo Dishoo!"

I feel just like how 'Westerns' get tattoo's or try to talk in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc, Us Westerns get Eastern things wrong too. Which is why we ALL need to 'Super Check' before saying, doing or 'ESPECIALLY' tattooing anything!! And DON'T FEEL AT ALL EMBARRASSED about your native country trying to use and understand English. I am a native speaker of the US and it is a very difficult language to learn as a non-english speaking person. We do have a very crazy/tricky language.
i think it's so hard to learn because it quite a lot of exceptions. like since i'm a native english speaker i know how to formulate natural sounding sentences and i can tell if a word is misspelled by instinct even if i don't use it often, but stuff like that can be very difficult for a english learner especially if they try to get ahold of every part of the language. imo i think people shouldn't try to get it perfect, as long as you can understand what others say and others can understand what you say i think it's fine. and if you spend time surrounded by english content you'll start to get a better hold of the language simply by hearing and reading what people say, even if it's entertainment.
