Why did I *now* only realize when Tiresias says that it isn’t Odysseus returning home he’s referring to the fact that it’s not the Odysseus we started out with and/or the disguise he wears while he’s hiding?🥲
Knowing mythology and prophecies, he's referring to both most likely. Sometimes prophecies will have multiple readings as a distraction and sometimes multiple readings that all come true.
That's the big theme of the Odyssey and why I love it so much, that the journey to get home changes Odysseus so much that he's succeeded... But it's not him anymore. Eee, it gives me chills every time I think about it. ❤
I don't think it's that literal personally. An Odysseus in disguise is still Odysseus, just in different clothes. My personal take is that the only version of Odysseus who can make it back alive is one who changes and becomes willing to sacrifice everything to get back. The one standing before him isn't ready to do that yet, so he needs to change and become that type of man.
I'm pretty sure, considering the song that comes after this one, it's saying that he has to embrace ruthlessness and becoming a monster to get home and is therefore not the same man as before. (Listen to monster for this to make more sense)
Listing all the details I love: Scylla being the sacrifice of man Eurolychus betraying and standing against Odysseus, and now I am realizing the man being no longer him is a reference to him being a monster.
I love how he portrays the Odysseus arriving back home as a completely different person, as in reality it's Odysseus but he had completely changed because of war and wasn't the same so they took as a completely different person
It's funny, it wasn't even war that changed him, it was the trip home. The war itself was a great success and the only downside was what he needed to do to the baby.
@@somedudewatchintv5297 A great success is relative if you consider how long it took them to siege and sack troy. 10 years of siege should be enough to change a person. Apparently enough to murder a baby. There is not much room left for becoming more monstrous after that.
Athena actually disguised him as an old poor man so the suitors wouldn't know it was him when he arrived home and that spell left when he started killing them. And I just now realised that this analogy of Odysseus' character development was also in the original by Homer! Omg!
I think the whole animantic ENHANCES the song. It already feels a lot like something that would be played during a waltz, and the animation makes the feeling stronger
I love the fact he says he sees the future and past. And his warning can also be taken as stuff that has happen and will happen again, like sacrifice of man could be the infant, or the betrayal could be losing Athena’s support.
I'm going to try this for the others Song of past romance: the mention of Penelope in TBATI Brother's final stand: Ody arguing against killing the baby I don't have anything for the last 3

Well this animatic is more a mythology accurate version of Tiresias. Tiresias isn't actually a young guy in mythology, it's just that a young guy voices him for EPIC (besides it's not like EPIC is accurate anyway) and animators follow that (because well they're making an EPIC animatic)
@@iliketea1427That's what I'm talking about. Before Mason was casted, the animatics for No Longer You had a more mythology-accurate looking for Tiresias
oh my god this is so well animated!! i swear you never fail to portray odysseus and what he's been through so nicely and this animatic proves just that :0

Literally last night i was wondering when you would make another epic animatic and you delivered! Also I love how you included the disguised Odysseus. Also love how you included Euryloclus for the betrayal part. All the foreshadowing! Context if you wanna know more about Eurlyochus part (contains spoliers to the Odyssey and Epic): Odysseus and his crew are trapped on a island (thanks to Zeus) that contains Helios' sacred cows. Tireases (from this video) had previously warned Odysseus and his crew that as long as they didn't kill/eat the cows they would make it home alive. But they got stuck on the island for a while and they start running low on food. So the one time Odysseus isn't there, a fed up Eurylochus proposes to the rest of the crew that they sacrifice and then eat the cows. Angering Odysseus and also Zeus. So when they finally get to leave, Zeus sends a storm after them and kills everyone but Odysseus. If Eurylochus hadn't bretrayed Odysseus' trust everyone could've come home alive.
Can we all just take a second to truly appreciate this animation? Like, the design for Tiresias and Odysseus but also just the way the light moves and the transitions that are happening? It's all so beautiful
Like a few others this animatic made It hit me that the “no longer you” line means that he has to change who he is to get home this animatic is awesome at conveying clearly what like lines of the song mean amazing work
I’m so excited to see the final version of this. The dreamy feeling of the future/past/present is so powerful. I hope the voice they choose can capture that.
Maybe it's the beard/hood/staff combo, but I get serious Merlin vibes from the animatics of this song, especially the lines "I am the prophet with the answers you seek / Time, I've unlocked it / I see past and future running free"... Like a sort of combo of the idea of Merlin living through time backwards, and what you'd find if you spoke to him from his prison (cave/tree/glass tower/whatever) for a divination. Also, I know the line "But that's not a world I know" has deeper references to Odysseus' altered identity (internal or external) in getting home (as well as the fact that this entire musical -like all variations - is arguably a sort of AU from the original Homeric Odyssey), but also... Well, yes, Tiresias. That would be at least partly because you are *dead* and you can no longer 'know' the living world as it goes on.
i like this tireseas! hes a gaunt old man, sitting down. he's not quite tired, not quite serene. just really detached, bc of course he is, he's dead. theres nothing left for him to fuss about. so it gives a quieter kind of edge to the song, that tireseas is just delivering what was asked of him, no own agenda. but prophesys are never easy to interpret, huh?
Been getting into these lately, holy shit thank you so much for hinting at the correct "Sacrifice of man" there are so many animatics that just use Polites for some reason even though it's a prophecy and everything said takes place after this point.

YES, OF COURSE I'LL LISTEN TO ALL THIS ON REPEAT AND LEARN IT WORD FOR WORD, BUT MY GOD MY HEART WON'T MAKE IT OUT ALIVE EITHER
OHHH THATS WHY HE SAYS "I see a man who gets to make it home alive, but its no longer you." In the song Dangerous, Hermes says to Odysseus, says in order to get home "You'll need a mindset change for this my friend" so its no longer him!!! (psychologically) (this is just a theory)
I desperate hope this song involves Odysseus and Tiresias singing in canon. Like they’re singing the same melody, but out of synch and different lyrics. Or maybe different melodies and lyrics altogether overlapping each other. It will really add to the sort of ethereal and dream-like effect.
Even coming back to this now (with the Vengence Saga released) there's still stuff the Prophet's referencing. "I see you draw your final breath" can be referenced to both Odysseus at the end of the Thunder Saga and the end of "Get in the Water"
Prophecy meaning mainly using the actual Odyssey. I'm a classics student. I have to do this somewhere: A Song of Past Romance: Most likely Penelope though, from the order, it could also be Circe since some legends say Circe and Odysseus' had a son that goes on to accidentally kill him when he's of age and goes to try and find him. Sacrifice of man: At this point, it's totally Scylla since he has to sacrifice I think 5 men to get through there or risk his entire crew going through Charybdis Portrayals of Betrayal: Odysseus' crew disobeys him when he preys to the gods and eats Helios' cattle, which is why Zeus attacks them in the first place. A Brother's Final Stand: I know there's a mutiny in the play. In the book, I think Eurylochus is the one who leads them into eating Helios Cattle but I don't think he's openly mutinous at least not to Odysseus' face. On the Brink of Death: After Zeus sinks his ship and he has to escape Charybdis, washing ashore half drowned on Calypso's island. Draw your Final Breath: Don't we all? I'm not actually sure if this happens in the book unless he dies briefly and Calypso magics the water out of his lungs or something since mouth to mouth wasn't a thing back then. How Odysseus dies is actually up in the air. Some say Circe's son does it. Some say Athena turns him into a horse. Some say Poseidon drowns him the next time he tries to go out to sea. Others say he just dies of old age in Ithaca. Make it Home Alive: Obviously, this happens though the play cuts out his visit to another kingdom where Odysseus tells his story in return for a boat home but Poseidon destroys the kingdom after Odysseus leaves out of anger they helped him. But It's No Longer You: When Odysseus first returns home to his palace, Athena disguises him as a beggar which he actually did once to get inside of Troy just without Athena's help.
I think Final Breath and No Longer You parts are being metaphorical rather than textual. They refer to the man at the beginning of the play. The man who begged Zeus to be allowed to be merciful to Hector's son and who spared the cyclops. By the end of the play that man is dead, and the one who gets to go home is a ruthless one.
