  • Tamiya's new tooled 1/72nd scale F-35A is here - can it compete against all the original tooled F-35 kits available in 1/72nd scale head-to-head to knock the prior champion - the Academy F-35B - from its pedestal?

    What do you think of the Tamiya F-35A? Do you think it's worth paying more than the Academy or Hasegawa kits? Let me know in the comments below....

    The Tamiya comes with masking for the canopy and smallparts under the nose that alone for me brings it up a few notches over the academy kit, which you need to find and spend a little extra for a 3rd party masking kit. Since i am Japan based Tamiya items are cheaper so thats also a bonus for Japan based modelers.

    Excellent video. I've built several Academy and Hasegawa F-35s, as well as the rather crude Airfix. I'll probably get the Tamiya, if only to encourage manufacturers who include pilot figures! (I build all my aircraft in-flight.)
    Would it be useful to restore your table using the Academy F-35A "Seven Nations" offering (ACA12561)? I found this decal sheet very satisfying, and completed the model in Royal Norwegian AF colours. Hopefully Academy will do a similar F-35B reboxing with US, British, Italian and Japanese markings.

      Love that a pilot has been included but wondering if it’s easy / possible to build the model with the wheels up?

    • @GeoffArnold1
      @GeoffArnold1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'll let you know here, after I build one. For the Academy F-35s, I fabricated a stand using acrylic rod fitted into the exhaust. Hopefully the same will work for the Tamiya. (I'm actually thinking of trying the same trick with a 1/48 F-35.) @@ronaldbyrne3320

    OUTSTANDING!!!
    This is the kind of "Kit Review" that I REALLY Enjoyed. A Superb description of All of the F-35s of different brands. Although, I think that you could have ( who am I to criticize, this being my first comments on this extraordinary Channel ) to stick with just one (1) type of F-35 (A,B, or C-types)...But hey its your Channel!
    Seriously, I found your Review Very well rounded including the price, dimensions, clarity of parts, but Also the Extra...decals, weapons, and interior w/o the Extra Accessories from like 'Eduards' or 'Quinta Studios', but Masks for the kit...What a PLUS (+)!!
    Just curious if you do this often....or was this just a one timer because of ALL of the Major brands you would need to buy!
    Thanks for the posting!!

    I really can't believe how you only gave a 5 for Tamiya's instructions. Then you described their instructions as average? To me, Tamiya instructions are some of the best you can get. They always tell you what colours to paint lots of the detail parts etc. A lot of manufacturers will not tell you paint call outs etc. They are clearly laid out and easy to follow. OK they only provide paint references for Tamiya paints, but a lot of other kit manufacturers will also only provide 1 paint manufacturer. Its easy enough to cross reference the paint call outs with online paint charts etc. Perhaps it is wrong to group models of F35-A's with F35-B's. Maybe a comparison of just F35-A kits would have been better. After all, in effect, they are completely different aircraft.

    • @MannsModelMoments
      @MannsModelMoments  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Clearly you've not seen the original video which shows the other instructions, and shows how much better they are than Tamiyas. - so yes, they're in the middle of those reviewed. Also the F-35A/B/C are not "completely different aircraft", so its absolutely fair to judge them together.

    • @Andy.Gledhill.Models.
      @Andy.Gledhill.Models. 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MannsModelMoments I have seen the other video, but it was a while back and I can't remember the other instructions. I was on about Tamiya instructions generally, compared to some other kit manufacturers. Plus, I would definitely class them as different aircraft. One is a vertical take off and landing. The other is not.

    • @MannsModelMoments
      @MannsModelMoments  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Andy.Gledhill.Models. Tamiya instructions are generally good, but they're not as good as current Airfix, Revell, ICM, Italeri etc.
      As for the different aircraft point, one being STOVL is not the issue - it's a common airframe that was planned to have different modes from the outset, so I really wouldn't say they are. If the STOVL version was a later development, maybe, but it was always designed that way.

    • @Andy.Gledhill.Models.
      @Andy.Gledhill.Models. 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MannsModelMoments LOL I wouldn't put any Revell kits instructions above a Tamiya kits instructions. But they are better than the likes of Takom, Das Werk and Border Model. At least they tell you what colours to paint stuff. Takom are well known for telling you nothing.

    • @MannsModelMoments
      @MannsModelMoments  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Andy.Gledhill.Models. Have you seen modern Revell instructions? Revell used to be pretty rubbish, but ones from the last 10 years are definitely better than standard Tamiya instructions
