    I wanted to commend you on this lovely presentation for the classic ProAc Response 1SC monitor speaker. Having owned this same pair since new; I've been mesmerized by the naturalness of these speakers since the first time I've heard them in 1997. My first experience hearing these was on a vinyl set up with a single ended triode integrated amplifier rated at a mere 13 watts per channel. Granted, these speakers have a mid to low level sensitivity at around 86 db but an 8 ohm impedance. Surprisingly, these speakers do rather well with low watt amp designs but the electronics have to be upper tier. This further reinforces your assessment on low level listening and clarity of tone, especially in the mid range. What really excited me about this review are the design details and specifications on the build. Primarily the cabinets. This speaker was designed like a Stradivari Vesuvius of Cremona, Italy! Your description of wall "thinness" was very informative and reveals the level of detail that Stewart Tyler paid to designing this gem of a speaker. I also appreciated your informed description of tweeter placement on x, y axis in relation to cabinet edge distance. I was always under the impression that the tweeter alignment had more to do with relation to sitting position. Traditionally, the speaker placement favors tweeters closer to the listening position (right speaker with tweeter on the left side of cabinet and left speaker with tweeter on the right side of cabinet.) A detail I was told many years ago about the 1SC was that the MDF was cut at varying angles in relation to the interior of the box to further refine the sound by eliminating parallel surfaces. About the drivers used on the 1SC's? Whilst in New York City I had asked the owner at Stereo Exchange about the manufacturing of the ProAc 1SC's and he told me that Stewart Tyler had mentioned to him that he uses Scan Speak drivers and has them modified under his specifications. Also I remember reading an article or two that confirmed this rumor about the Scan Speak drivers. Regardless, they are perhaps one of the most beautiful looking monitors I had ever seen with the transparent mid bass drivers and copper phase plugs which looks like a transparent window peering into the driver, exposing the voice coil's copper winding and metal basket. The 1SC's are a keeper! I, most likely, will be putting them in my will. And until then, I will continue to experiment with different electronics and discover what works best with these magical transducers...

    Pretty objective IMHO - the advantage of owning them for 22 years is you know their strengths and weaknesses inside out, and I think you got them across well.
    Thanks for explaining the offset tweeters! I often wondered.

    After listening to your channel, I pulled the trigger on a pair of ProAc Response D2s with the dome tweeter. I liked the fact they were a little more forgiving with seating position. I am extremely happy with these speakers. I drive them with a McIntosh 5300...play my vinyl with a Rega Planar 6. Thanks so much! Perfect speaker for my room, and music I prefer!

      That is great Paul. My initial impression is that I preferred the soft dome to the ribbon tweeter as well. Would love to get them home to find out for sure. The ProAc D2 and the ATC SCM19 would be my go to recommendations at their price point. I hope your D2s provide you with as much satisfaction as my 1SCs have over the years 😊👍

    Thanks for the review of your own speakers, the ProAc Response 1SC. I have had a number of small bookshelf speakers myself (Dali, Penaudio, JPW, Mission, Spendor etc.), all of them with their own character. I guess the thing is to find good speakers and enjoy them with flaws and all. Just bought a pair of used Tablette 2 and beginning to understand why so many like the ProAc's. The challenge is to see how much good sound you can squeeze out of a small box and here is where I think the little ProAcs succeed. Hard to find them used to a (for me) realistic price though. Keep ut the good work (sound)!

    One of the best auditions I've had during my journey was a pair of ProAc floorstanders (can't remember the model now but it was a a 2 way design) with Prima Luna integrated amp. The bass output and it's tonality/texture was super engaging! The rest of the frequency range was uber sweet and revealing without any fatigue, which is something that I feel a lot of speakers have a hard time getting. Thanks for talking more about ProAc. I've barely seen them at shows in the last 10 years, which is a bit of a shame!

      Hi James, I always get a little more excited than normal whenever I have an opportunity to listen to a new pair of Proacs. There are very few brands that make me feel that way, ATC and Dynaudio being amongst the others. I think you are spot on with your observations with the Proacs and I bet they sound great with the Prima Luna. Thank you for watching and sharing.

    I really like your videos, you do a great job. I had a pair of Proac Response 2.5 and bought them in 1998. Proac's are midrange kings, they just have that midrange magic. Full bodied with very little bloating. They are very well built speakers and are made to last. My 2.5 were getting a little long in the tooth ( I was worried about the surrounds needing to be replaced) so I traded them in on a new pair of Audio Physics Tempo Plus. Proac's are hard to get in the states these days but I would've loved to try out the D20s. If I can get 20+ years out of the AP like I did with the Proac's, I'll be a very happy guy.

    After listening to quite a few of your videos I must say I am impressed. It seems like you are very well prepared and that you know exactly how to present the message that you like to put forward. I really like your Hifi didactic - so to speak - and watch your videos with great joy. I own a pair of Proac response 2s that I think I appreciate as much as you do with your 1sc'. Very fair review in my humble opinion. Proac owes maybe a little of its fame to Scanspeak and as a Dane that is not bad either.

    Very fair review of the 1SC! I just recently sold mine but it was great listening for the 3 years I had it. I found it quite fussy with amplification, but there is a bit of magic with the midrange clarity. I have the S400 as you do now and cannot wait for your review and comparison. @@abritishaudiophile7314 Just a word of warning. The S400 took forever to burn in. Definitely the 300 hours people suggest. Also, due to the wave guide, please play with the toe in. In my setup, depending on toe in, it can vary from too bright to downright dull. It should be neither. From dispersed sound to fairly focussed. I've never had a bookshelf so fussy with toe in and placement - but in the end prefer it more than any bookshelf I've had or auditioned so far. Enjoy, and would love to hear your take on it! Well done Tarun, a very fair and balanced review. I can vouch for this because i too had a pair of Response 1 for a very long time. Every comment is fair.
    I too helped the lower register with a KEF subwoofer as i missed something in the bass register after selling the KEF 107 reference monitors.
    My previous system front was Linn, Musical Fidelity Pre Amp, Quad 606 power amp.
    I sold everything but the Proacs when i emmigrated and for simple convenience drove them from a Uniti Atom streaming player.
    In short, those Proacs have given me immense pleasure for 30 years.

    Just discovered you this morning. Subscribed immediately. I like your low key approach. You're in the same league as Ron from New Record Day, Sean from Zero Fidelity and Thomas from Thomas Stereo.
    I loved your video on the The Top Five Inexpensive "Housekeeping" Audio Tips. Very interesting, so a big thank you for posting that one. I'm almost 70 so it is never too late to learn.
    I am in the hunt for new speakers. I love Harbeth but they do command a hefty price (here in Canada) for the 30.1.
    In any case, the Buchardt 400's I see behind you, have really peaked my interest. I hear they are decent in the mid-range? (remember I love Harbeths). I eagerly await your review.

There is a review of the Buchardt S400 pending so I don’t want to give too much away but they do have an excellent midrange and a rolled off high frequency response which in some ways is reminiscent of the Harbeth sound. Those 1SC are such lovely looking speakers. Timeless aesthetics (and sound, given what you say). After going through a lot of speakers, both demoed or owned, I've recently settled on some Proac D2R, which are just wonderful. Run in a 12ft x 14ft room, by an Arcam SA30. I realise they'll scale with better amps (by all accounts, Sugden or tubes are well suited).
    The Proacs have a slightly more revealing / detailed presentation of highs than I'm used to (Spendor Classic 3/1, which had too much bass for my room). And it took a day or two of demoing for me to 'get them', after coming from such warm, forgiving and silky smooth speakers. But it's such a liquid, insightful treble, blended seamlessly by the smooth, fluid midrange. Good recordings sound wonderful, great recordings can be staggering. And underpinning that, is a decently tight (but not uptight) bass, that's both warm, fun, and flowing.
    They're a really addictive, involving speaker to listen to. Real all rounders, with a superbly judged presentation in my opinion.
    Would be great to see a review if the D2 or D2R on your channel at some point, subject to you being able to secure a pair.

    Tarun, thanks for you review of your Proac's, but mostly for explaining the steps taken to deal with edge diffraction, by offsetting the tweeter in both horizontal and vertical planes. I'll be borrowing this technique when I install a set of ADS 320i speakers into 1/2" thick Bamboo enclosures (I'll take into account the crossover frequency to compute wavelengths to the cabinet edges). Will make mirrored pairs as well. Considering the 22+ years you've had them speaks volumes. I feel you've presented an unbiased assessment, using multiple amplifiers to convey that quality counts.

      @@abritishaudiophile7314 I think it would be a interesting comparison with the newer models. I have been close to getting a t5i or a t7i multiple times. I have heard some good things about John hunter at rel over the years. It would also be interesting to try a pair of smaller models vs one in a stereo setup to contrast the performance difference. Some say 2 are better than one. In a small room perhaps even their newer t zero models would work. I believe rel as a company has been through some changes and maybe bought by someone else along the way since if I'm not mistaken? So should be interesting to contrast newer stuff with their older classics. Thanks!

    Excellent review and I owned the Proac 1sc's for 14 year's and agree with your notes that their strength is the mid-range and pinpoint accuracy (classic status). After eventually selling them in search of a fuller and perhaps more dynamic and extended sound, I dabbled with other brands but never truly satisfied. I have returned to Proac and now own the Proac SM100. They retain the excellent midrange (close to 1SC), with a better bass response and slightly sweeter top. Its another option and its a speaker Stewart Tyler worked very hard on to replace the Studio 100.

    Tarun, was wondering if you’d ever review the vintage Proacs. I’m glad you did because I’ve had my 1SC for 22 years also. Your review was honest and educational. The audible limitations are obvious for such a small box so there’s no need to deny their existence. But as you said, given the right source and expectation, these miniature monitors can become small wonders to listen to.
    What I really like about them is they can grow with whatever my budget allows for upstream components. They just sound better and better as I compliment them with better amp, digital and analog components, interconnects and cables.
    The classic design of the simple box with diminutive proportions makes them easy to fit into ever changing room decor also, from traditional to transitional.
    Sometimes the warm British house sound can sound out of date, or too rounded and laid back for contemporary music. But I find the Proac’s fast and slightly forward top end lets it sound fresh and “digital” if you allow it, depending on your upstream gear couplings.
    My PrimaLuna tube integrated gives me a choice of triode or ultralinear mode, the latter will let Proac sing it’s full song, wide open. If the recording is too bright, I’ll use triode mode to tame it down, which is especially useful for late night listening.
    The last piece of gear that I found made a world of differences for the 1SC is speaker cables. Through the years, I’ve fed it fat monster cables, skinny twisted pairs and flat ribbon cables like Nordost. The Proac top end was always a bit to bright and harsh with some less than ideal recordings, and of course the bottom always rolled off a little too early. But when I upgraded the Nordost to their Frey 2 speaker cables, the brightness was polished off, and the bottom became much more authoritative even when the REL SHO/3 is off. The Frey 2 cost as much as the speakers when new so it just goes to show how the 1SC can continue to shine with the right up market gear.
    I’m listening to Sonny Rollins’ Way Out West as I’m writing this :)
    Cheers from California!
    Stay COVID-19 free everyone. It’s definitely NOT a HOAX!

      Hi cj996twins, fascinating to hear your experiences with this speaker and I have to say IMHO your insights are spot on! Your comments remind me of the phrase, “everything matters but not to the same extent.”
      I would love to pick your brain about cables. Have you ever played around with pro interconnects from companies such as Belden, Van Damme, etc.. I recently played with a £50 single ended Van Damme interconnect with Switchcraft connectors and was genuinely surprised as to how close the performance was to my £800 Chord Signature interconnects. I may do a Myths and Misconceptions video on cables if I am feeling brave.

    • @cjpriustt

      Tarun A British Audiophile No I haven’t played with those. I standardized all my preamp to amp interconnects with Acoustic Zen, Audience AU24 for phono cable, Cardas Clear USB, and Creative Coax cable for CD transport to DAC.
      I’ve always wondered if it’s better to standardize on one brand of cables for one “house sound” across all components or not. It’s an expensive and time consuming hobby to find the right mix of cables to use. Too many variables and the rewards aren’t always there or noticeable.
      The most notable difference was when I upgraded to the Acoustic Zen and the Nordost Frey 2, because even my wife with tin ears heard it through blind test repeatedly. That was a way to convince her it’s money well spent. Haha.

    You were admirably careful in your effort not to unduly raise people’s expectations and everything you said is true. Yet I think you have somewhat underrated these speakers though I find it difficult to say why, exactly. I had a pair of these and using Audio Research tube amplification in a fairly spacious medium sized room, they slayed everything else I tried to do for much more money, up to and including ProAc Response 5’s. With the right amplification they become invisible and throw an enormous soundstage with a natural midrange. Within their capability they rock harder than bigger, slower speakers. I look forward to your future reviews.

      Hi Andrew, you are absolutely right. These are incredible speakers. I didn’t want to over do it in my praise as it would just come across as self serving and biased. If you can live without the bass extension or are prepared to use them with a subwoofer and don’t want to play at concert levels, in 20 years I have yet to hear anything that comes close at near their price point! 👌

    • @andrewweis5857
      @andrewweis5857 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are in a unique position, if you are interested, to see if there are any mini monitors that can knock the Response 1’s off their pedestal. It’s been some time now since they were in production. The thing is, we could probably find speakers that might excel in one or two ways vs the Response 1’s, but I will bet very few will rock as hard. It’s not that they go low, it’s that they go fast. That’s why they’re better than the Response 2’s of their day. Not many people know about this, even some ProAc dealers think the Tablettes are the stars. I think not. I hope this is a challenge that interests you - mini monitors that rock as hard but cede nothing else to the mighty Response 1’s.

Great that you have not seen the need to change for so many years, particularly as hifi as a "hobby" is so fashion orientated these days, what with this years version of a product always "light years ahead" of last years etc. I've had the D18 for a number of years, which, if I remember correctly are similar to the DB1s with an extra bottom bit of cabinet to make them floorstanders (different woofer too). Enjoying your content!

Often it sound louder on the left or sometimes on the right. Am I being too fussy? does spotify for example always deliver a centred image?

    I would be interested in hearing about why speakers aren’t built like studio monitors with “faithful” reproduction of music. Preference for a different sound could be adjusted by the listener with tone controls or DSP to suit their tastes, or compensate for their room acoustics. Begs the question why basic amps don’t provide more control in this regard.

    Tarun - just come across this video and it was very informative, albeit some 3 years old now. I'm considering the up to date equivalent of your setup as my listening room is very similar to yours, namely the Exposure 5010 pre and monoblock power amps. So in regard to the speakers - you do mention a newer Proac model in the video, but I'm conscious things have moved on again, even in 3 years. What Proac would you now go for now (if it is still a Proac of course!) ... Keep up the great work ...

    Tarun, because of you, I snagged a brand new pair of 1SC's today. Yes, brand new - New Old Stock and a rarity. I can tell that you love your speakers. And when you said that music for you, was all about the midrange, I was pleasantly surprised because that is what I used to say about the Spendors [read on]. The box was unsealed in my presence and the packing inside was pristine - like it had been kept in some sort of a time capsule from the time it was made. Question - what speaker stands would you recommend with these speakers? Before my current pair of speakers, I had the Spendor s3/5's for about 20 years, perched on Atacamas filled with atabites and sand. An itch got me to sell the speakers and the stands for the Wharfedale Lintons - nice speakers but after 20 years with the Spendors, it wasn't the same. The magic is in the details and I was missing that. I had both seller's and buyer's remorse. I have a very good vibe about the 1SC though. Thank you for your very thoughtful and fair assessment of the 1SC.

    Hey Tarun you mentioned in my last comment yesterday on the ATC19 that they weren’t the best for low listening. Is this then the best that you’ve experienced for low listening? Honestly I don’t know much about Proac. From seeing your videos I think I remember you saying that proac doesn’t really lend you their speakers but is the response DB1 the replacement to your 1SC and if so would you say it’s a possible step down from your model or on the same level? Depending on the era sometimes products either get better or worse that’s why I’m asking this question. I’m seriously considering the ATC 11 or 19 and now I’m considering the Proac replacement to your model whichever unit that is of course. I’m going to go to a Proac dealer an hour away tomorrow in Dallas TX to see if they have any on demo. Thanks for your help!

      @@abritishaudiophile7314 thanks so much for your answer! I have used some old, made in England, KEF floorstanders that have 91db of sensitivity, with a drop at 3.2 ohms that generate a very good sound pressure, with very tight, defined and extensive low frequencies. Recently some Zu Omen, which are practically a single driver with a tweeter to extend the high frequencies up to 25 kHz, with only a capacitor between them. They sound delicate, although the low frequencies are not as tight and punchier as the kef. But now I have more limited space and would prefer to have a good quality stand mount speakers. SET amps cheat a bit about the ability to deliver sound pressure. With only 8 watts, depending on the efficiency, they can achieve quite a high level.

I have 2 pairs of Proac Response 3.8s they are brilliant and I love them. However, I heard the 1SC paired with two REL S3-SHO aboutva year ago and was blown away by the integration and extension, using theses subs if anything allowed the main speakers to just take their strengths out to another level. I can fully understand why you have kept them all these years. Stewart Tyler is a magician in the way he voices Proacs. I know my main drivers were designed to a Tyler spec and built by SEAS uniquely for Proac. Not sure about the sift dome tweeter though. In some of the big older D 100 Range and some of the new K range use ATC mid drivers but not sure what bass and mid bass. Hi, Tarun my radar quite aimed lately on the tablet 10 signature model of proacs. Do you have any idea on sound signature between the 2? my room is 11.5ft x13.5 ft. Quite small. I'm using a schiit aegir and saga + combo. I know that Tab 10s are rated in 10ohms and I will be fine in driving the speakers. I really like the class A design sound character of the Aegir. Your info will be much appreciated. Keep up your channel very helpful to us audiophiles.

    Always liked the ProAc sound. It’s all about what each listener is tuned to. My experience with ProAc has been with the Tablets and the ones I own which are the ProAc EBT, extended bass tablets. These are very fast, transparent and unforgiving of mediocre equipment in any system I have tried them in. They reveal flaws in the recordings, so unforgiving! It can be a curse which is why I am very careful about what gear I use with them. Tarun, you spoke about defraction effects and this can be dampened by using what I’d called a defraction blanket that is custom fit to the cabinet proper. It takes time and patience to fabricate them, but they do work and I have made them. They are not a cure for poor speaker design or execution of that design. Most bookshelf speakers need a substantial metal tube stand which has been spiked and terminates into a sand trap. Further aid comes in a sand trap that rests upon the top of the speaker. The top trap is spiked to the top of the speaker and enhances the deadening of the speaker’s cabinet. The stands are filled with playground sand which is completely filled into the empty tubes of the stand and followed with casting resin which fills the voids and makes the stand as dead as possible. The bottom trap is used for wood floors and absorbs the energy generated by the speaker’s cabinet. This inerts the cabinet and allows the speaker to voice itself as intended. It will shine or fall short, but it won’t be due to poor stand design or build. Speakers can be problematic if not treated. A speaker is an energy transmitter and as such, needs help to dissipate and drain that excess energy off so the speaker can be truly heard. There are other things to address, but addressing the common problems bookshelf speakers have allows the user the ability to truly hear their speakers and not their speaker’s problems. It also will reveal how well they actually do sound. One problem at a time is how we learn where problems are and how each must be addressed. The stands I use have a four inch square steel column, 10 gauge thickness and have 1/4” thick top and bottom plates. The plates are dampened with a thick pad of material that I cannot reveal, but that’s why it is called proprietary.

      @abritishaudiophile7314  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting as always Mark. Thank you for sharing this for other to learn from. I have never heard of a diffraction blanket. Is it like a sock that fits around the speakers. I would be curious to learn how it works. I will try and look it up. Great to hear from you my friend. Stay safe. 😉👍

    • @markphilpot4981
      @markphilpot4981 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A British Audiophile, the defraction blanket is made from foam that has bumps on it’s surface. It has to be cut at the edges to fit the speakers sides and top and bottom. Three Velcro strips hold it in place. They are not hard to make. They may not be attractive to some, but it is about performance, not appearance. The foam extends 3/8” beyond the front and back of the speaker. This is supposed to cut the edge diffraction. Still experimenting with the final design. It is for bookshelf speakers as for now.

    If the mid/bass cone is transparent it’s more likely a material called TPX rather than polypropylene. The copper phase plug strongly suggests an SEAS design and the tweeter also looks like one of theirs.

    • @abritishaudiophile7314
      @abritishaudiophile7314  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank AudioFlat, I think you are right the consensus is that it is a SEAS mid-woofer. I think the phone used Peerless for woofers on larger models in the Response range at the time but they ate never forthcoming in confirming these things. I am almost certain that the tweeter is a Scanspeak D2010. Thank you for watching and sharing 😉

    • @AudioFlat
      @AudioFlat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, on further investigation, I’m sure you are correct about the tweeter. I was wrong about the cone material, not TPX but TXP and SEAS also did just such a driver with a copper phase plug and the same shape basket surround - so I’m pretty confident it is an SEAS design.

    Thanks for the great review, and also your video of what's inside. I have also had my pair since new almost 20 years ago. They are powered by a Creek 5350SE, through some pretty high level Wireworld cables (and the rest of the setup has silver Wireworld connects). I have always loved the sound. In a previous flat I had an electrician install several dedicated AC lines, which really helped the dynamics. The sound has always been natural and very pleasing even though I find them to be revealing (not as much as electrostats surely, but still good).
    Now I have moved to a larger flat (the livingroom is about 40-50 square metres, with lots of angles (converted attic). Now the sound is still good, but lack somewhat. I experiment with placement and such. I have never been a fan of subwoofers, but have started thinking about maybe adding it.
    If you don't mind I have a couple of questions:
    - Given the age of the ProAcs, is there a need to have somebody upgrade/change some parts in them?
    - Would a new/larger set of ProAcs be better suited for a larger space, and if so what would be the sweet spot in terms of pricepoint?
    - Should I keep my Creek, or go with something new (and hopefully better)?
    Thanks in advance

      Thor Bostad I would consider changing the capacitors in your crossovers. The crossover caps used were not as good as what is available now.There is a plethora of really high end caps available these days. I recently upgraded some fairly new Solen pb series to Solen Silver Series and the difference was well worth the money. I was previously skeptical that it would be worth it. The improvement in micro detail and naturalness of voices was significant compared to much more costly improvements that I have done. There is a site "humble Hifi capacitor ratings" and a review of caps. Tony has done reviews on many caps and it will give you an idea of what different caps will reveal. Any cap rated 9 or above on his chart is a very good cap in my opinion. A cap upgrade will be much less money with a bigger reward (for the money) than changing your amp. Even if you decide to change amps, having better caps will be required to fully appreciate it. Good luck !
      Edit: You only need to change the caps that are in circuit with your tweeter. The bypass caps for the low pass (woofer section) will not require changing. This is easy to do yourself. Just replace the caps with the same value as you already have.

I think for the money as long as you have reasonable expectations you are unlikely to be disappointed. Active is definitely they way to go to get the biggest bang for buck.
      Thank you for watching and supporting the channel, I really appreciate it!
